    Hi Renee, I just came upon your channel and boy I'm sure grateful I did! I've been making bags just for family and friends for the last 5 years. I've watched Utube channel after utube channel. I love them but I've never seen anybody closer to my age to learn from then I found you. Your bags are absolutely gorgeous. I recently made the decision to sell the bags I make to at least pay for my expensive habit. I've been a mom, grandma, and wife for 45 years, I got married at 10 ;). I decided to start a new chapter in my life at the age of 60. You even seem to have the same chipper attitude as me. You are younger than me but not 30 yrs younger. You've taught me a great deal already so thank you so very much for doing what you do and sharing your amazing talents with all of us. Keep up the great work!!

      Rona! I've been sewing for 50 years...but ..cough..I'm 64! haha! I so wish I was younger than you! I'm also a grandma! Please let me know if there are any techniques you would love for me to share! You absolutely can sell your bags! If you like I can do a video on how I do this effectively! Most of my bags sell within the first 15 minutes of posting them. Your message absolutely made my day!!!! Thank you so much! Have you visited my Facebook handbag page yet?

      @@SandcastleDesigns Good snowy morning!!! We woke up to about a foot of snow this morning, so looks like a good day to sew! I've been watching all your videos and really appreciate your straightforward, informative way of teaching. Like you, I've been sewing for over 50 years and it has gotten me through good and not so good times. Only making purses for about 6 years, but I'm totally addicted. I did weddings, couture sewing and making tons of Halloween costumes for friends and family, but with making bags there is NO fitting involved!!! I would love to see a video of how you market and sell your bags. I sell most of mine by word of mouth and last year I started doing some craft fairs which were very lucrative with the less expensive items, but the high end didn't sell very well. Thank you for all your well made videos. So sorry about your husband. Will remember him in my prayers. I lost my daughter to cancer and three years ago my husband had a stroke which left him handicapped, so sewing really is my escape door!!! Keep up the good work.

    Thank you so much for this video! I just finished a tote bag and used your drop in lining technique! Love it!! I also used your recessed zipper video. I am kind of new-ish to bag making but not new to sewing. This was a test run on new techniques (for me) and to see if my new Janome HD-9 could handle it.. we both passed the test and you were a big part. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.

      Fantastic Trudy! This is great news! I have to say that it took me some time to get better at drop in linings! I still love to practice them! At first I avoided them altogether! Any problems with the basting tape ever as far as tension issues due to needle going through the tape?
    I have a juki 1508 and I’m sure it’s not that the machine has problems.
    But I always have thread tension problems if I sew through the tape.tends to break the top thread most often.
    Sailrite seamstick tape by the way.

      I try to keep the DST out of the seam allowance. If I do have to run over it, I use a drop of oil on the needle to keep the glue off the needle. I have not seen tension issues on either of my industrial machines.

    • @SandcastleDesigns
      @SandcastleDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      Once you master a drop in lining...they are so much easier! The trick is getting the interior and exterior matched up properly. What I didn't show here was knotting off the thread. Most of the time we knot it by taking a needle and threading the threads through the seam allowance and knot it hidden. It's a bit tough to do with all the DST. I've even done a backstitch with one stitch that is barely noticeable on the side seam towards the back.

    What a BEAUTIFUL Bag!!!! Do you need to find patterns with drop in linings or do you just modify so you have enough to fold over at the top?

    • @SandcastleDesigns
      @SandcastleDesigns  3 роки тому +3

      All patterns can be a drop in lining really! If the seam allowance is 1/4" you can just add another 1/4" to keep it at 1/2". It really doesn't make a huge difference except in the placement of your strap connectors.

    • @jessicaharris1375
      @jessicaharris1375 3 роки тому

      @@SandcastleDesigns wow what a cool concept! I am following a pattern that wants you to turn the bag right side out to attach the straps and then turn it back inside out to sew in the lining and then you birth the bag. Just watched your video about bag prepping and your methods make sense! Its easier to follow a pattern at first but then it also makes sense to think about how many times your birthing/turning the bag and try to figure out another way. I also decided to use decovil light for the first time ever and it didn’t really adhere very well so when I turned it right side out the first time some of it is not attached anymore and making wrinkles. BUT what I love about your channel is that you really remind us that we are always learning and getting better each time! I put the bag down for a couple weeks but I think I’m ready to pick it back up and try to finish it! I’m so glad I found your channel!!

    • @SandcastleDesigns
      @SandcastleDesigns  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Julia! I can sew interfaced cotton on it, but I don't do that often. My cylinder arm really doesn't differ too much from my 1541 however they are different brands so there are some differences in the tension and the way they thread. Changing the flatbed on my cylinder arm is something I just don't do and I use it primarily for topstitching and bag openings. There is a gal on Etsy however that sells custom flatbeds that can easily be installed and removed for your cylinder arm.

    • @SandcastleDesigns

      I have installed a different color lining which forces the thread to be a different color. I stitch the lining in the matching color. I love to use a contrasting color for topstitching.
