- I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown today. This is the Kilkerran 8 Cask Strength Sherry Cask Matured. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

So this review immediately solves the availability issue we have with Kilkerran some markets. Now the issue is gone ... as there is no availability anymore.
Regarding the stuff itself, sign me up for the bourbon matured. Happy to leave the sherry matured expression to others ... and if it's gone: head for Benromach or Arnamurchan. But please leave the bourbon matured whiskies on the shelves.

Nah Bud…the 12&16 is easy to get but these cask strength ones are rare. Got this and the bourbin cask matured for 50€ each. Great review cheers.👊🏼🥃

Most definitely review Springbank releases… 10 and 15 are can certainly be found in US. 12 I’ve never seen on a shelf, have tried it… and agree it’s more rounder over K8 sherry…. But it’ll be great to see your nose and palette notes on SB!!!

G, great once again! If you can find this here in the States it is easily 295! No chance! Just found a sherried SB12CS for 149! Great price for here! The 10 is selling for 139. SB and it’s associates are insanely overpriced in the States! 😊

Geoff I'd love to see you review Springbank 12. For his 1000th review Ralfy is doing a 5 part series on Springbank. I know it's a bottle that I can't taste but I'd still like to experience it through you the same way I am through Ralfy. Thanks for the great Kilkerran review. That's as rare are Springbank in the New York area. I have though been able to get the 12 and the Heavily Peated for around 100 US.
We can get neither Springbank nor Kilkerran in our market. I take that back, I did see the Kilkerran 12 once but it was fine before I got the notice it was in stock. That was over a year ago.
Sorry to hear that. Generally Kilkerran 12 is much easier to come across than SB in most markets, though. Hopefully some stock makes it into your market at some point. 🥃
Review the Springbanks, the IBs and whatever else you got, I say. As a channel viewer, I figure it's my job to calibrate the reviewers' takes on bottles I can't find to help me buy bottles I can find ... plus, I just find it interesting. All of it. Cheers!

On the Swedish market, it's like a lottery with both Kilkerran and Springbank. When they are released, it takes about 2-5 seconds, then all bottles are gone. Sometimes one gets lucky, sometimes not. I got lucky with both of the Kilkerran 8 when they were released, for around €75....and both are great

I've had my bottle for over six months. It's almost gone and I'm starting to panic. Each poor gets better and better as the bottle get some more empty. I like the funky characteristic of it. I'm also getting Coco notes which you did not mention. Although you didn't mention black forest cake. Good stuff. Good review.
Good and entertaining review (as always) Geoff. I agree on your description on the two. Springbank lighter and sweeter. Kilkerran much richer dark fruit. Dirty! I however prefer the latter (as you know). Cheers!
Even though I live in a country that whisky in general is really unavaible and inaccessible (Brazil), I really would find interesting seeing reviews of diferent and kind of rare/ inaccessible stuff
I finally found a liquor store that had Kilkerran 8 Heavily Peated and Kilkerran 12, both were $100. Unfortunately for Kilkerran, that store also had SprinkBank 10 750ml bottles for $100... so I bought 3x of those.

Both Springbank and Kilkerran have got absolutely crazy price tags, and not only in terms of being expensive, but also the crazy difference from one shop to another. In France we've got a shop where this Kilkerran 8 is priced at 290 Euro. And here's even crazier thing. We've got Springbank local barley, 11YO, at... Dramatic pause... 799 euro! Absolutely ridiculous. I've seen Springbank 15 in one shop 100 euro, in another, 250. So retailers write watever price they want, with no relation to logic.

Just did a blind yesterday with these exact two. Your comparison was spot on!!!!
Strange though, everyone says by the still design of sb vs kk, springbank should be funkier.
Although when I was on site, KK has the most crazily funky smell!!! SB site smelled a lot more malty and clean❤
I got lucky and picked up the 8 yr Bourbon (good) and 8 Port (amazing!) matured variants this year but finding them at a fair market price is extremely difficult here in the US. I also love the Heavily Peated range and I prefer Kilkerran in general over Springbank since the former is much easier to find for a good price than the latter for me. The Sherry 8 yr seems to garner the highest price so it remains a unicorn for me but really appreciate your time and review of it.

Since few Years i dont look for alternative Springbanks anymore.
I just look for good Whisky. Sometimes a little Gem comes across and enlightens my Dram evening. Sometimes its just really bad Whisky with very good Marketing😅.

Thank you Geoff for the review. When it comes to Kilkerran and Springbank, Sweden isn't the best country for them. They comes and goes, and some offerings are web releases, wich is like a lottery. I've never bothered at those, because nearly all of them are too expensive. There are some older Springbank bottles available for up to $3200 USD, so I'll have a few of those then 😂
Ive seen the regular 12yo Springbank and the 10yo CS for a decent amount of money a couple of times, but I usually see them when they've sold out 🙃

I won a Sherry cask bottle in an SAQ lottery last spring. Incredible stuff for 100$ CAD.
Sadly, like the Springbank 12, it is almost impossible to find it in Canada.
For CAD $100 that's a great deal. And yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath for SB12. Tough to find pretty much anywhere nowadays. 🥃

I had batch 4 and 5 of the Kilkerran 8 y/o. Both were appr. 65-69 euro's at that time.
Already emptied batch 4 and found it very enjoyable. Batch 5 is still waiting patiently on its turn to be opened.
But agree with your opinion on the Springbank 12 y/o CS, those are of a different league.
And comparing that batch 4 against the Glen Garioch 15 y/o Sherry cask matured, I found the Glen Garioch way better. But that one is almost double the age.
So maybe not completely fair to the Kilkerran. But overall those Kilkerran 8 y/o are the better ones in the Kilkerran range imho.
Well as far as value goes, you're getting much of that SB "magic" without the cost, provided you aren't overcharged, But yes, perhaps not the most fair comparison. Really wish that Garioch 15 was still around in Taiwan. Haven't seen it for years, but I loved it. 🥃
Springbank 10 is pretty easy to find in my market at around $110 but I actually prefer the Kilkerran style to Springbank. Especially the Kilkerran 16 and the all the 8s. I will pretty much buy whenever I see them.
Kilkerran is every bit as good as SB in my opinion. Both brands vary in quality depending on the bottle, but they both maintain an excellent level of quality. Cheers! 🥃

The “Campbeltown Premium” is a real thing, sadly. Never had the K8 Sherry, but loved the standard bourbon cask edition. Magical stuff.
I feel like I'm missing something with Kilkerran. I've never connected with any of their expressions I tried even though I love Springbank and Longrow. Oh well plenty of good drams out there that I can actually get my hands on :) Cheers Geoff!

I suppose it can be compared to Springbank 12 in as much as it's impossible to buy. When it was first released I picked up two bottles for about £50 each and I've got one left. Unless you are a pal of the retailer that sells it it's practically impossible to buy. Kilkerran have gone the way of Springbank. The bottle I drank was the first batch and I loved it. Some doughnut would probably pay me £500 for the other bottle I have. Please, for the love of God, don't get a sponsor. WT
Please have a monthly show for enthusiasts with the IBs and harder to find bottles. Enjoy your humor.
Anything around 10 YO and cask strength from Ben Nevis (to lesser extent HP) could deliver you almost similar experience as SB 12 CS (or KK8 CS). KK8 CS has similar Campbeltown funk and dirtiness as SB 12 CS but they cover different ground. In fact if you can get KK Heavily Peated, that one will give you maximum SB dirtiness plus good amount of funk. Btw, SB12 CS 100% bourbon matured could be a disappointment especially to Asian connoisseurs. Probably enough time given it could turn into miracle. Generally, anything coming out from SB or Glengyle will need to go through enough “bottle maturation” to get your buck worthwhile, their neck pour seldom inspired.
Might as well be 50yo Macallan for as much as most of us see it XD Good on you for getting one =D

On a more serious note doh.. I came a cross blackadder raw cask Bunnahabhain 6yo. Peaty sherry dram. Shit i loved it. It was like dirty intense sherr peat. Any suggestion on similar drams?
Independent bottlings of Islay whisky under 10 years old can be really good. Keep an eye out for Williamson (Laphroaig with a drop of something else in it). They do sherry peat bombs. Smokehead do that stuff too. Got to give a shout out to Kilchoman as well.
I actually prefer the kilkerran 8 over springbank 12. Primarily because of the dirty sherry style(yumzies) and it is about 2k nt cheaper!

K12 still offers a great experience at a lower price… yet both are starting to linger on shelves because of the premiums.

@@rupertansell4662If you have an online auction house close to you (particularly one you can collect from so as not to incur the shipping costs) that would be your best bet. They don’t go for high prices and in the months after release there are dozens for sale at auction, which is why most people can’t buy at retail. Added bonus if buying in this way is that the flipper may only be breaking even or even making a loss😀. As an example I picked up 2 bottles of the last KK Bourbon release for £40-45 per bottle not so long ago.
@@rupertansell4662 It does hit the market at that price but you have to be on the ball or really lucky. When it hits the websites you have a couple of hours before it's all gone. I bought a Kilkerran 16 for £70 this morning (the 8 sherry had already gone) and I just checked again but it's sold out. I love the KK 16 but I just got lucky. The site was Royal Mile. I tend to find my Springbanks, if I find them at all these days, in smaller outlets that sell wine and have a limited whisky selection. They have small allocations but tend to hang around for a day or two. I got lucky with the Kilkerran because it's my day off. It's luck or contacts. WT

Ah, the Ficus Tree, the omnipresent apartment decor, aka the Weeping Fig. And you're right, they make awful secretaries. But if you cut them down and use the wood, they make decent butt plugs. (That's why the figs are weeping).
