🕯Rest in peace, Mel.🕯 You made a musical impression on our age. Tough to do, in a fickle industry where women were stigmatized & often dismissed. Thanks for songs that will always remind us all of what seemed like simpler times. ♡
An interpretation that goes straight to your heart. I would have given anything to see Melanie live. I think the people in the audience often had goosebumps. Her voice moves me every time, through her sensitivity and charisma, giving me a state of inner peace. She really inspired me.
It is the mere simplicity that makes this so great. No screaming and whooping, no flashing lights and strobes. No need, just Melanie and her guitar, let it wash over you.
When Melanie sang it was like she demanded your attention, I've never seen such a incredible mesmerizing singer like sweet Melanie. Love you so much Melanie
God... Melanie's songs have stuck with me from my childhood on... it's incredible how some artists music just stays with you your whole life & still sounds just as good now as it did when you first heard it...
No category could adequately describe her music. Truly one of a kind. Fearlessly authentic. Always with something to say that is compelling and timeless. I always feel more enlightened after listening to a Melanie song.
I have recently discovered Melanie, I am truly Blown Away. I am genuinely touched on a level, of which i never knew existed! Connects with me in a way not many artist can. Melanie is surely up there with Dylan.
"everyone tear down your own little wall that keeps us apart from being apart of it all" is literally my thoughts every time I walk into a room at my University, break room, bus, everywhere and everyone is looking at their phone and no one is talking to anyone.
When watching Don Draper of Mad Men I am reminded of this great song: “Madison Avenue pink dream makers, They try to escape from it all, But instead they build walls, that`s all But they wanna be close to it all.” Melanie you are a great observer of the human condition.
You have been part of my life ever since I first heard "I'm back in town". And with some others you have surely become one of the stones, I have build my poetry on. Thank you.
Hi Melanie, your songs are woven into happy memories of my teenage days. Just wanted to say thanks so much for the dreams and hopes your music instilled me with. Play on!
Hey Melanie......been listening to your stuff for years...in the early 80s I introduced a house full of males to your music, at first they shrugged...2-3months later it was all they played........your a legend mel....rod
I'm in shock - I heard this song on a Dion DiMucci album from the early '70s (during his folksinger period), and absolutely *loved* it, but never realized until today that you had written it! Time to get your recording…
I bought the first Melanie album( and then the 2nd) when they first came out thanks to a woman I met at uni who was very special. I played the two LPs just the other day and they had the same force and meaning as when I was an impressionable 19 year old. This song has if anything more relevance than ever.
in summer of 1990 I was 15 and had an ex hippie neighbor me and my close friends would get high in her den with her and listen to old records. one night she put this on and I was very impressed. haven't heard the song since and just looked it up and bam here it is. I don't know how I remembered the title as we were always so high there but I found it. 🙂
“Close to it All” Melanie Safka While walking through life I would never fall If I could be close to it all and all, If I could be close to it all. If I had my dream it would not fall down If I could live high on the ground, The sound of high is a good one to many around When they want to be close to it all, And I want to be close to it all and all, I want to be close to it all. The village sugar takers, Madison Avenue pink dream makers, They try to escape from it all, But instead they build walls, that's all But they want to be close to it all. If I had my dream I would fill a hall And tell all the people tear down the wall That keeps them from being a part of it all 'Cause they gotta get close to it all. The village sugar takers, Madison Avenue pink dream makers, They try to escape from it all, But instead they build walls, that's all But they want to be close to it all. There's just one more thing that I want to say: Everyone has got their own special way That keeps them from getting too close to the day, Accept and be part of it all and all; Everyone tear down your own little wall That keeps you from being a part of it all 'Cause you gotta be one with the one and all, And everyone tear down your own little wall That keeps you from being a part of it all 'Cause you gotta be one with the one and all, You gotta be close to it all.
Is this footage from the "Leftover Wine" live album? What a memorable concert,. I was just born that very same year, but it's one of my favourite live records of all times. Your interaction with the audience in this recording was memorable.
@Rodrigo González This was actually from a concert for the BBC in England the following year but I'm so happy that you love that recording from Carnegie Hall so much. :)
Während ich durchs Leben ging, würde ich niemals fallen While walking through life I would never fall Wenn ich dem Ganzen nahe sein könnte, If I could be close to it all and all, Wenn ich nah dran sein könnte. If I could be close to it all. Wenn ich meinen Traum hätte, würde er nicht fallen If I had my dream it would not fall down Wenn ich hoch oben auf dem Boden leben könnte, If I could live high on the ground, Der Klang der hohen Töne ist für viele gut The sound of high is a good one to many around Wenn sie ganz nah dran sein wollen, When they want to be close to it all, Und ich möchte dem Ganzen nahe sein, And I want to be close to it all and all, Ich möchte nah dran sein. I want to be close to it all. Die Dorfzuckernehmer, The village sugar takers, Madison Avenue, rosa Traummacher, Madison Avenue pink dream makers, Sie versuchen, dem Ganzen zu entkommen, They try to escape from it all, Aber stattdessen bauen sie Mauern, das ist alles But instead they build walls, that's all Aber sie wollen nah dran sein. But they want to be close to it all. Wenn ich meinen Traum hätte, würde ich eine Halle füllen If I had my dream I would fill a hall Und sagen Sie allen, dass die Mauer niedergerissen werden soll And tell all the people tear down the wall Das hält sie davon ab, Teil des Ganzen zu sein That keeps them from being a part of it all Denn sie müssen nah dran sein. 'Cause they gotta get close to it all. Die Dorfzuckernehmer, The village sugar takers, Madison Avenue, rosa Traummacher, Madison Avenue pink dream makers, Sie versuchen, dem Ganzen zu entkommen, They try to escape from it all, Aber stattdessen bauen sie Mauern, das ist alles But instead they build walls, that's all Aber sie wollen nah dran sein. You gotta be close to it all.
The first years she was at her best. Later she began to sing in a more artificial way (from about 1973), which diminished the power of her natural voice.
Melanie, you were singing into the wind. May angels comport you.
My favourite performance of this wonderful song by Melanie. Rest In Peace, Melanie Safka.
This song was a favorite of Allison Krause, killed in the May 4, 1970 Kent State massacre. Thank you Melanie for this special song.
Melanie and a guitar. Perfection.
🕯Rest in peace, Mel.🕯

Can't have heard this for 50 years yet instantly remembered, bringing back many memories. Wonderful song and performance. Thank you, Melanie.
Rip melanie heaven has regained a lost angel first girl I ever fell in love with in the late 60s.
One of the most perfect expressions of femininity I have ever seen. xx
It is the mere simplicity that makes this so great. No screaming and whooping, no flashing lights and strobes. No need, just Melanie and her guitar, let it wash over you.
I love this woman. What a beautiful voice!
Remember watching you sing this as the sun came up over Glastonbury on the solstice. Same year as this recording.
Pure and Sincere......Rest In Peace......
When Melanie sang it was like she demanded your attention, I've never seen such a incredible mesmerizing singer like sweet Melanie.
Love you so much Melanie

yeah but dylan sold his soul. Melanie didn't
"everyone tear down your own little wall that keeps us apart from being apart of it all" is literally my thoughts every time I walk into a room at my University, break room, bus, everywhere and everyone is looking at their phone and no one is talking to anyone.
Very true and it's quite sad really.

Each new Melanie song I find is completely amazing. Melanie, your music fills a hole I didn't know was there.
Wow I heard some of your music as a child and teen. Now listening to all of it and I am so amazed! I love all of it and you too.
Hi Melanie, a great song, like so many songs you sing! You're such a great musician!
Blessings to the sweetheart of the universe.....Melanie
Bob Dylan can only stand by and envy this talent.
When watching Don Draper of Mad Men I am reminded of this great song: “Madison Avenue pink dream makers, They try to escape from it all, But instead they build walls, that`s all But they wanna be close to it all.” Melanie you are a great observer of the human condition.

“Close to it All” Melanie Safka
While walking through life I would never fall
If I could be close to it all and all,
If I could be close to it all.
If I had my dream it would not fall down
If I could live high on the ground,
The sound of high is a good one to many around
When they want to be close to it all,
And I want to be close to it all and all,
I want to be close to it all.
The village sugar takers,
Madison Avenue pink dream makers,
They try to escape from it all,
But instead they build walls, that's all
But they want to be close to it all.
If I had my dream I would fill a hall
And tell all the people tear down the wall
That keeps them from being a part of it all
'Cause they gotta get close to it all.
The village sugar takers,
Madison Avenue pink dream makers,
They try to escape from it all,
But instead they build walls, that's all
But they want to be close to it all.
There's just one more thing that I want to say:
Everyone has got their own special way
That keeps them from getting too close to the day,
Accept and be part of it all and all;
Everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
'Cause you gotta be one with the one and all,
And everyone tear down your own little wall
That keeps you from being a part of it all
'Cause you gotta be one with the one and all,
You gotta be close to it all.

I'm trying to understand why this person is acclaimed to any degree. Her singing skills are nothing to write home about.
