She used to play on the steps of Low Library. We never had any idea that she would be, or wanted to be, a known singer. We thought she'd be another David Peel, a local (and sometimes neighborhood....) performer. Boy, were we wrong. And when she did "Candle In The Rain", wow. Huge hit internationally. We were all really proud of her. Those were very, very different times. Anybody today know of a hit-making performer who has played themselves from the streets to international fame? Without any media boosting TV show behind them? Didn't think so.
My Mom played guitar and sang to me all my life, last year of her life we sang together. We sang "there will never be another you" at her nursing home, first time she played for years! (She died the next year) I am sharing this, because she was a fan of Melanie, of course she was, and I was born March 30, 1975, Melanie had a little girl March 27th. Melanie was in the next room of my Mother, Melanie stopped by her room and said , well hello little easter bunny (to me, it was Easter Sunday) My Mom LOVED telling me all about that story my whole life. For some reason, I just fell into watching Melanie today. Her songs were taught to me by my mother and her guitar.

Put Melanie in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously. It's an unbelievable shame that she wasn't inducted in her lifetime. Such a generational icon and talent! RIP beautiful soul. Cheers\=/\=/
What a face; what a spirit!! OMGosh, just an absolute one-off. I had such a crush on her back in the day-I was 12 when Woodstock happened, and I became aware of her around that time. Lay Down always brings tears to my eyes. So much has been lost, so it’s real soul medicine to be able to see these videos.❤❤
As a musician I grew up listening to her music, i was around 17 years old, man o man when you said “what a face” LOL my friends and I would go to the music store so we could get a good look at her on her albums.
It was quite some time before I knew what she looked like. There was no such thing as music videos, and I didn't spend much time in record stores, so I didn't see an image of her for I don't know how long. But I loved her voice, and her persona, which came through so strong in her songs. @@truthserum9157
When I was 19 in 1970 I had a HUGE CRUSH on Melanie. I pictured the two of us sitting around a campfire and talking about life. Then in August of 1994 I drove up to the original site of the Woodstock Festival on the 25th anniversary. This was totally amazing. Melanie was performing with her daughter and son. After her set she mingled with us. I introduced myself to her. She was so nice and friendly. Then I told her of my huge crush I had when I was 19. She liked that. Luckily I brought my camera with me. I have this great picture of the two of us together. Beautiful People is my favorite song by her. MAY YOU RIP BEAUTIFUL MELANIE.
🕯Rest in peace, Mel.🕯 You made a musical impression on our age. Tough to do, in a fickle industry where women were stigmatized & often dismissed. Thanks for songs that will always remind us all of what seemed like simpler times. ♡
Her face, her smile, her voice! Those were the reasons why I had a crush on her back in the 70`s. Even after so many years there's still something I feel I can't explain.
She's an angelic soul with a gift to lure you to those beautiful eyes, to her cherubic smile, to the magic in her music, to the young innocence in her heart and soul. She is the sweetness of life that we all long for, gathered into a lovely combination of Bedouin gowns and alluring femininity. Yes... I love her, too!
Saw her live in Bournemouth UK in the mid seventies. Just her and her guitar. Lovely evening and she finished with this song.. Yes, you were a beautiful person, and the sun is now setting on that wonderful generation of artists some of us were so lucky to see and hear.
I think she is the queen of the beautiful people you never hear this song, such a shame a wonderful sentiment can't seem to be achieved except very rarely
"Beautiful people..., we got so much in common, I go the same direction that you do". Yes Melanie, you did but you lead the way and we are all grateful for that. You were and have always been a pure, inspirational, straight from the heart musician and that my girl is as good as it gets.

My mother "discovered" Melanie and this song on WNEW Radio in NYC, on either Allison or Scott Muni. when I couldn't have been more than 14. She loved the song and bought the album, and by 1970, well Melanie's fame, deservedly, had grown world wide. What a song is this "Beautiful People." And memories of Mom, long gone now.
Pete Townsend wrote movingly about this phenomenon in his '67 song "Pictures of Lily", but I believe we luckily still have Melanie in the flesh, residing in TN. You go, girl!
Hello Melanie, i rediscovered you and your beautiful songs. I love specially that say i dont eat animals. Im vegetarian and i love animals too, of course. I think ive heard once this song many many years ago. I found it again i wanna know more from your life, thank u so much for loving animals...😢
I love this beautiful soul! She is the " salt of the earth"...she never became egotistical or shameful. I bought he " 45" witch had the hit " Brand New Key"..It was around 1974 , I was 12.:) 🙂🙂🙂Have a Nice Day Melanie.
I love the strings behind the vocals she is indeed a treasure in the times that were simple and love was less complicated.. Woodstock a chance a farmer gave for peace beautiful gift of land 4 a cause peace love ☮ and hope. ❤💙💜.
From the very first moment I heard her voice, I fell in Love. Then I saw her on Granada tv and knew she was beyond special. I also knew I did Love her. Yet, we were never to meet. Even if so, we were so different, as to never evolve into more, should we ever meet. Her eyes, her smile, her energy, her simple sincerity, down to earth and yet beyond. This video captures the real Melanie. True. Honest. And expressing her feelings, her way of seeing life, and wanting it all to be unblemished. Her. And her alone, yet with her audience. With all my heart I wish I could have told her I Love You. And always will. I heard of her passing last night while at work. This morning I lit a candle, It has burned all day. As will her legacy burn beyond her passing. My daughter heard me playing Melanie songs. She watched and listened as Lay Down Candles in the wind played. She asked how come nobody today comes across like Melanie. To which I replied, Once God creates perfection, He breaks the mold. RIP Melanie. RIP.
RIP Melanie, you will be greatly missed. Thank you for all the beautiful music you gave us

I first heard Melanie when the Woodstock triple album was released and have loved her since.
What a nice take ! An unique voice.
Pete Townsend wrote movingly about this phenomenon in his '67 song "Pictures of Lily", but I believe we luckily still have Melanie in the flesh, residing in TN. You go, girl!

Possibly the only singing voice ever that has literally given me physically tingles down my spine
4 years old, couldn't hear it enough. The first Voice I heard as an instrument.

To which I replied,
Once God creates perfection, He breaks the mold.
RIP Melanie. RIP.
