15 years ago I So wanted to do this! Had the money and heath to do it but my Family fought me at every step so gave up😔. Now at 70 and health not so good have decided even if it kills me at least I will be happy! Starting a small container garden this spring and looking for a van to turn into a place to live and travel to look for a place to live in the country. Praying for you and ask for your prayers also!
You go woman!!!! I am assuming, just can't see a man deciding to plant a container garden. I'm much like you. I wanted to homestead 42yrs ago. Nobody was doing it. Seems to me it is becoming THE WAY to do life these days. I'm thrilled. I'll keep doing what I do gardening, preserving food, fresh eggs. So help me. We have killed our chickens. Even when my mother and husband did it all, I washed & bagged for freezer. I still knew who was who without feathers and I just couldn't eat them. Rabbit is yummy and so easy. I want to try that rout.
Blessings to you and your container garden. Prayers for your health as well.... we ARE a lot a like.
Good for you!
Come on up to Maine and chesk it out.
Wonderful! You deserve this excitement and happiness Yvonne. Go for it. Best wishes from Newcastle, Australia. Kiri x
god bless you, that's a big journey ahead, you will be in mine.
My friends have a Great Pyrenees, and has a warm barn to sleep in, but he chooses to sleep out on the snow with his tail over his nose! Respecting the breed isn't cruel, and Gabriel has his herd to keep him warm! We have snow, getting more, and ice mix. It is beautiful, but I will so appreciate Spring! Be blessed and warm!
Jess, when you were talking about the resurgence of homesteading it occurred to me that everything you said about homesteads was being practiced in North America many years ago, by the indigenous people...and we as new comers would have learned a lot if we hadn’t let our ego get in the way, and had learned from their ways.. their treatment of the earth, the waters, the animals, the importance of the “Great Spirit”
Could we get more videos about how you trained your dogs? I haven't owned dogs and I think it would be really interesting to learn about because you made the dynamics sound super cool. I think I would like to learn how you raised your dogs because I really appreciate the genuine respect and caretaker vibe you had when you talked about them.
I watched Justin's show last week that you were on, it was fun seeing you there. You and he are my favorite homesteaders. I'm too old and sick for that now, I'm born and bread a city girl, we moved to the country in 2003 and raised, Steers, rabbits, goats, chickens on 2 acres, and I didn't grow a food garden then because I worked so many hours at my job. In 2005 I started getting sick, we kept the goats and chickens until 2012 and in 2014 I could no longer work. I'm in a wheel chair now and we still have chickens and get our own eggs, my husband grudgingly does the chores and gathers the eggs. In the winter time I can not go outside in my powerchair. In summer I am out there every day even though the heat will oft times make me sick. I love being in my raised bed gardens. My only regret is that we couldn't afford to do the move sooner when I was younger. I would have loved more property than what we have now, and I would have loved to do it full time. Keep up the great job, encouraging someone like me, but also the younger generation, we have forgotten where our food comes from and shows like yours and Justin's puts it in perspective. Thank you for bringing this too us.
Thank you for pointing out Gabe's job and his nature to your audience. So many people think all dogs are the same and all dogs are indoor pets. Letting Gabe do his job is the best kind of love and appreciation from you for his nature.
Also, he's always happy, smiley and wagging whenever anyone comes up to the fence. That tells me he's a happy boy. He's not depressed and deprived. He's happy to do his job.
I am so glad you provided that statement about your guardian dog. I have the conversation with a lot of people all winter. Every winter. Those dogs are just breed for being outdoors and fulfilling there duty as a working dog. They make a fantastic family dog.
OMG!! Miah...I say "That'll do, pig. That'll do!" to everything and everyone!! My co-workers don't look at me funny any more!
A man who keeps the fire ready for you is worth his weight in gold! (Or seeds😂) my husband does the same thing, and it's such a sweet thing! That's my love language 😍💗
Oh my goodness!!!
Your natural conversion with us about your life, the animals, their jobs and cycles of nature's lives is amazing!!
You remind me so very much of my Mother in Law!!! That is a good thing!!!! A very good thing!!!
She taught this city boy a ton about being a steward of the land, how to care for the critters, garden and how to, over the phone, help birth a goat kid in breach.
I miss that sweet lady!! I miss her knowledge and strength of character!! But, I see all that in you!!!
Thank you, so very much!!
This episode cemented the feeling that I must get back to the land. Not to the extent that you are, for sure, but get back to a semblance of what I once experienced.
Thank you!!!!!!!
Oh, Pocket omelette!!! Belly laugh time!!! Been there, done that, just didn't have a term for it. Glorious!!!!
Snow will make a junk yard beautiful!
Gabe also has the coat for the kind of cold you have. Just like huskies and malamutes they have the double coat that protects them. Plus you also have a barn that all the animals can go to if they choose.
Also! I hear you talking about Gabe a lot and explaining yourself this season..I love hearing you talk about anything but imma tell you girl, you don’t need to explain yourself! Bless y’all
Show us some seeds instead! Lololol just playing but foreal!
she's probably just running out of things to talk about
@@mimosveta trust me she has plenty to talk about. people are always asking about gabriel that’s why she’s always explaining the situation!
I agree.
I love hearing about Gabe. Im a dog groomer. My dad bred German Shepherds when I was a little girl and im planning to do the same. I want to breed them as farm dogs so it was nice hearing Jess talk anout this aspect.
Perfect explanation of Gabriel’s job on the farm!! 🙂
Have you tried using your freeze dryer for the goat milk? Powder the milk after freezing and keeping it on hand for the baby goats that may need a little extra nourishment. The colostrum milk would have been wonderful for those little twins.
Wow this is a FANTASTIC idea! I cant believe I didnt think of it!

What Justin is doing is way better and more real than all those Hollywood people who think they are so important kinda like the Athletes and how important they think they are when in all actuality there nobody’s doing nothing. Where Justin Rhodes is showing one 73 million of us wanted to see real life experiences.
"Chivalry is not dead."
It's lovely to see, and to know that boys are growing up with such a great example of how a man takes care of his wife and family.
I am a small scale homesteader from Finland. And I love the way you present the homestead life and the way you speak about it❤
Jonahs intro is beautiful. I watched on Justin’s page yesterday.
My favorite part too.
How do I find it?
I live in MT, it got to -62 degrees and my sheep and barn cats are still alive and doing fine.
😱 thanks for sharing! Here in North Texas we're facing potential -25 windchill tonight and tomorrow which is unprecedented for us. I've been working my butt off the last few days to prepare everything for my animals to survive and I've honestly been so concerned. Our winter weather rarely gets below freezing for more than a few hours and only occasionally dip down into the 20's so out animals are very much not used to this weather.
@@lmd2454 I deal with these temperature every year I provide shelter, food and clean water every day and I have not lost one animal to the extreme temperature. Some have gotten frost bite and lost parts of ears. One cat disappeared for about 9 months during a strom but she's still here. I have actually had three to five more cats join my farm not sure where they came from since I'm at least 15 minutes or better from a town or neighbor. I have chickens, cows and sheep. All is good. Don't over think it.
I love Gabriel! He always seems to want attention so badly and Im always so happy to see him get some love ❤ Guardian breeds are so special! 😊 I love your explanation of everything! 😊 Love the chickens response too 🤣😂
Gabe smooshing his face up against the fence 😂😂 we will be adding a great pyranees to our farm in June and we are so excited!
Being pretty new to the whole Homesteading thing (we're starting our 2nd year), just wanted to say thank you, thank you for all the knowledge we've learned from you over the years before we started this, and helping us know that its not rocket science, we can do this, we can be healthier, and thanks to you we're doing it! We've been "egg" independent for a year now, this year we'll be "Chicken" independent (raising our own), and each year we're growing more, raising more, and going to the grocery store less and less. Thank you!
Getting out from under HOA’s is another great leap of freedom.
Tending to my little basil seedlings and watching roots and refuge 🙌🏻🌱 such a happy combo ♥️
I love your life. You are so blessed and you deserve it. Bless you and your family. People are getting back to the old ways which is the healthy and creates happy family. You know where your food comes from and what it is made from. No G.M.Os, No chemicals.
Thanks for educating us on Gabriel, his goats, and his job! Every video I learn something new from you guys. Glad Miah was able to come to the rescue for the chickens.🐓❤️🐓❤️
We had two dogs like Gabriel. They were Abby and Sam. They are both gone now and I really miss them. So sweet and very protective.
Thank you for sharing about the Rhodes" docuseries. I found you through watching their channel and love BOTH channels. God Bless You ALL. (If I was younger, I would love to homestead)
Hi Jess, I'm glad you spoke on the subject of Gabriel. Some people wants to over do kindness when it comes to guardian dogs, but really it only upsets them. It's like a person who drinks coffee all the time than all of a sudden no more coffee. The nervousness starts creeping up and they can't stop it. Thanks for sharing something so valued! Guardian dogs do best outside!!🐶🐾
I have lived in the cold all my long life, if you don't want to lose your plants it's better to be safe than sorry. It always gets colder than they say, in this kind of weather situation, and nothing survives 9. If you're just doing it as an experiment, go for it. Stay warm, good luck to everyone down there!
I love the Rhodes family. Rebekah was in labor last night. Snowball may not wait for the debut. We got half an inch of ice and 4-8 inches of snow is coming then more at the end of the week. Love seeing your babies. So sweet.
I am a person who grows a lot of food. I became someone who dreams of homesteading watching you and the all the other homesteaders. Justin is so creative. I cant wait to watch it! Thank you for the heads up!
So happy for Justin and his family. Loved seeing you there with them
Our dog is the same. We’ve tried putting him in the barn. He yelps and claws the door. We’ve bought him an xl igloo for dogs that he scoffs at. Lol. He wants to be outside! He even makes his own bed sometimes by digging down in the leaves. But he definitely doesn’t want anything we do for him as far as bedding down. In the morning, he’s right against the door waiting on my husband to come out and go to work. He’s happy in the barn or even inside my husbands office only if he’s in there with him. Gotta love it👩🌾❤️
Jess, i love watching Bear and the kids. When you went out to milk this morning he went straight to them and gave them a good sniff. So sweet.
I just watched that on their channel! Love it!!! ...... People ask me... Why do you garden? you can go to the grocery store! I LOVE GARDENING. It makes me tired..but it's a GOOD tired!! It revives me and I LOVE seeing my seeds being born in to plants. And all of the varieties that I can get through seeds. !!
Homesteading used to be normal. It's how I grew up. I'm glad there are so many ppl coming back to it.
Chickens scratch up cracked corn in the yard so I spread some on the paths. They scratch up ice in the process helping make it less slippery. God bless Gabrielle! He’s a good boy! 🥰
Kitty litter sprinkled down on the ice gives some good traction. Good to keep in the car if you have to drive. Alaska girl.
Gabe is a beautiful boy for sure! Y'all are so lucky to be getting eggs, unfrozen
"That'll do pig. That'll do." Such a good movie!!
Girl: ice cleats! They are awesome!! I broke a wrist on ice...an ankle with wedges/large rocks...don’t chance it! You can just walk normally with them on!
Thank you for explaining what a 'guard dog' is.... so many need to hear your message.
Our nights are going to be -24 the next few nights 🥶 dreaming of spring...
As a dog lover and veterinary assistant, I see some dogs that NEED a job to do because they are so anxious when they aren’t near their people or not doing their job. Like people, some need a focus and a purpose more than others. I wasn’t worried about Gabe because you’re a very caring person and he always seems so happy! 🥰
So heartfilling watching yous and your critters navigate the ice
The sentiments you expressed at the beginning are really nice, and you're right, people are beginning to be more aware of life's appropriate priorities .. family, health and the planet. Hope it continues to go in that direction.
Hello 👋 starting my peppers on the 15 of February , plant my tomatoes in March 16. Start them inside. About 12-15 inch of snow on the ground, and getting about 10 more next week. Love to garden and love your videos.
Oh my word. I'm married going on 42yrs..... a mamaw and much older. However, what all of you are doing is exactly what my desire was at 15 when we got married. No person I had even heard of was even doing this unless you were old retired and because they HAD to. Im so happy for all of you doing this. I think I watch all the folks that know one another. Its such a blessing to me to enjoy homesteading through each of you. I garden I put food by (as they used to say) I dehydrate, can, freeze little and look forward to trying fermenting other vegies than cabbage. Eventhough I do all this.... its not homesteading. I thank all of you for sharing. I still learn new things as well. Just thought I would let ya know your teaching old dogs new tricks also. 🙏✌💜
I thought I would warn you from my own experience. Ice salt made the pads of my dogs feet burn so if you use it make sure to wash his paws after he comes inside
Yes! I thought about saying this’s too.
Yes! Please look into Mushers for dog pads 👍
Sand which is messy in the house or gravel sprinkled over the ice will give you traction without burning dog feet.
You should bring the seedlings in but leave a few out there and just see how it goes.
Watched the trailer yesterday. Beautifully done. Hope all y'all tribe will watch this
Good afternoon Jessica love your videos
The more adults that learn the more the children learn. Both ends. Beautiful thank you.
Also, Gabriel is a breed that has an extremely thick coat made to keep him warm in extremely cold temperatures. That and curling up with the goats will keep them all warm. 👍 Be careful walking on the ice, so easy to loose footing and BOOM! Voice of experience. 😁💕
Great Pyrenees are awesome dogs! We live in suburbia so it requires a lot of work to keep them enriched. Three walks daily,, interactive toys,, obedience work,, etc. We have one and she is treasure. However we knew what we were getting into. She needs a job and thrives when she has something to do. We have also had to tell our neighbors it's okay if she is out in the snow for hours, she is built for it!
Jess, you should take half the brasicas indoors and leave the rest in the green house with no heater.
It's also time to sweep that high tunnel 🤣.
Love both of you!
Ohhb my Jess today it was only +20 C and I am double blanketing. I can not stand the cold. Now as you heading into spring soon we are hading into atumn.Brrr. I do wish I can follow the warm weather. Bear and Gabriel are true troopers. Also the goats. As for you and Miah get inside before I freeze. Coffee fire place hot soup etc. Please keep warm. I was watching Jill earlier and poor girl was freezing. Sending you some warmer weather so you can put the seeds in.😍😊🍅🍅🍅🌶🌶🌶
I really wish I could show you my table right now... Stacks of the same exact seed packages... I almost feel normal now. On the other side of the table I have homemade pizza Napolitana (fresh sauce from my 12 foot San Marzano TREE) and salad all from my balcony garden, harvesting 1-2 pounds of vegetables a day. I have 28 tomato starts about 1 month old, sowing 12 more and I already have 20 outside. Not including eggplants, peppers, basil, lettuce, beets and strawberries. I'm doing missionary work in the Dominican Republic and as soon as I realized we were going to shelter in place I started planting and giving away plants to my friends. Thanks for helping so many people succeed!
Only 40 kinds of tomatoes? C'mon, there are 15,000 varieties out there! LOL! You put me to shame!
I know, right. Slacker!!
LMAO 🤣
(Just kidding!)
SPEAK Sister!! It amazes me when folks judge what they don't understand.
Be careful on the ice. 6 years ago I slipped 2 steps out my front door during an ice storm and broke an ankle. I have residual issues with it today. Interesting discussion about your dog Gabriel. He's accurately named! 😊 Heading over to watch the premiere of your friends' show now. Thanks for sharing.
Arkansas and Minnesota understand each other! Nice!
Love you and your family and all you do with what God has given ,ALL OF US.Thank you for being you and REAL.You are an inspiration, even IF, one can't do all you do to OUR earth.Something we ALL have in common..We all live in this wonderous world together.
LOL your description of Gabriel reminds me of Sam the sheepdog on bugs bunny defending the sheep from Ralph the coyote. oh, they released this morning the gas lines in Texas froze causing the massive problems, I hope your state planned a little better and you stay warm and safe.
Through a homesteader’s lens. Love this!! I can’t wait to see it ❤️❤️
Here in Maine I have slid down our porch stairs more than once on my butt! I don’t blame you for the extra caution!
That is awesome all the eggs you are getting in the cold weather!
I have a husband who builds a fire before I get up. My favorite winter time activity is having coffee and reading devotional books in front of fireplace!
The cold cold weather is the only hindrance to my getting chickens; it’s 40 right now and I’m hating it!
Your vids are so inspiring! Thanks for the link to Justin’s video!!
For me, the increased movement to homesteading in the past years has had such a major affect on me. In my season of life, the reality of living a homesteading life isn’t in my future, however, the philosophy of homesteading has simply engulfed my heart with the huge desire to live a more simple life - confirming that family is the most important thing in life - feeding my body both physically and spiritually in a healthy way and feeling incredibly grateful and blessed to be allowed to share in your family’s journey. ❤️❤️
Your words are beautiful Sue!
@@RootsandRefugeFarm Thanks Jess. I’m living my life vicariously thru you and Miah. My whole being is so calm when I watch you planning and creating your glorious gardens and am in total awe of Miah and his gift of creativity and skill as he works on the farm. You both are wonderful parents and such incredible stewards of your animals and your land. Enjoy sitting in front of your fireplace and sorting your seeds!! 💕💕💕
Please buy spikes for your shoes for days like that. Worth having even if you rarely need them. One fall can be so damaging! 💗 Happy Galentines Day, by the way. 💗
Jess, we're the same age and I as well love breaking thin ice puddles. Sooo satisfying. It's the kid in us. 🙂
I watched Justin's trailer and oh my gosh!! Jonah's intro just gets you hooked! I am so excited to get to watch this!
Times to lay down this years planting, seeds aplenty for feeding all those hungry mouths. Stay safe, good seasons greeting from Cléguérec 🇫🇷🍷🇬🇧❤️🤍💙🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐓🐓🐓🐓🐾🐾🐾
Because of you, Jess, last fall I had my son and husband build me an 8 x 4 ft raised bed. I have now collected more seeds to plant in this garden bed than I will be able to fit for the next 10 years. Getting excited for the Spring. Thank you for inspiring this old lady to start gardening again. ❤️🙏🏻
I have lived like this for 50 years and I love how it is now becoming The Hot Tip ‼️. My kids are now raising their kids this way ♥️. I am Proud and Happy for the whole Lot of ya. ♥️🙏👍♥️🙏👍♥️🙏👍♥️🙏👍 I am a Pig 🐖 Lover but I love those PokaDot Goats too. God Bless You All Kansas City Loves You ‼️🤪🤗🤗🤗
I put cleats on my boots this morning to tend my chickens! we are having freezing rain today!
I love what you do.
We just got a huge snow in Seattle and I'm looking forward to spending the day cozied up in some blankets, organizing my seed box and working on my seed inventory spreadsheet, and then figuring out my planting schedule! ❄️🌱🕯
I need to be doing that... figuring out my planting schedule.... 🌱🌱🌱🥶
I'm in Seattle too! So glad I didn't decide to get "wild", and plant anything to early.
Hi Jess! I'm a newer fan, from this past year. Thank you for all the help & ideas you offer, as well as sharing the warmth of your family life. Your authenticity, and all of it, just means so much to me. I'm trying to still hold this dream in my heart, although it definitely feels more impossible with each passing season. I'm just small-time gardening and renting from a relative at the moment, hoping to get back out on my own very soon. If you see this comment, and either you or Jeremiah has the time, I would love if you could share how you cultivate and maintain your firewood? I've seen in a few videos now, it looks uncovered. I've only watched a few videos about harvesting, drying, and preserving firewood, and would really love to hear how your family does it. Thanks for all you do and give!! Hugs and Blessings
I’m so thankful for y’all and everyone modeling that this is possible! I have wanted to have a “mini farm” for more than 10 years. But I had no idea until I found you guys and subsequently all the others that it was possible to have. I’m so thankful to all who have shown me that it absolutely can be done and it’s called homesteading. We are starting to look at properties this year and it would never have been possible without all of you!
Did you cry over Jona's sweet voice, I did. Oh my word!!!
I signed up for the first episode ..I cried from the intro.. This is so exciting!!! Thank you.
Me too!! I tried really hard not to cry but I couldn't help it.
Me too!
I CRIED watching the first episode
So are you are #racist then? Because the Rhodes are supporting Joel Salatin, who is both a #racist and a #sexist,
Exiled New Yorker wow
LOL! My dogs each hit our electric fence once, and that was all that any of them needed 😉
You and Justin are so inspiring!
I enjoyed growing things for fun before but the NEED for growing food is something new. Anyone who has seen empty shelves in grocery stores this past spring, has suddenly realized how dependent we are on others for what we really can do ourselves. Years ago everyone knew how to can and grow and now we're mostly helpless. Those that lived through the World Wars realized how life can change in an instant. Most of us did not know this, we were used to a life of abundance. This realization is probably what is really driving the homesteading and victory garden movement and I'm glad to be doing my little part to be somewhat self sufficient.
I agree. that moment of empty shelves was sobering for many
Living in Montreal and having snow for at least 4 months a year, it's hard not to be jealous of your farm 😂 especially when you're starting seedlings in the days after Christmas
I start my first seedlings in mid-march and everything gets transplanted at the end of May
Not as cold as here -- Minus 18 degrees minus 35 windchill You need Cherry Stone or also called Turkey grit for your steps. Works great alone or mixed with salt. :) Smart chickens.
For the brassicas in the greenhouse put trays and row cover over them and heat mats under them
And you do it all so well Jessica. :)
Here in NY, we have about 8 inches of snow on the ground. I actually do not like snow, so I cannot wait until it melts. Enjoy!
Bless
what a wonderful way to start your day
You helped bring out a passion that I never thought I had. I am now growing from seed....thank you.
I love seeing your alpacas 🦙
Yes I love the Rhoads' show n saw you there few weeks ago.... N yes I'm ALREADY signed up....
Caught some of Justins new movie on Mike and Laci's channel its goona b great❤❤❤😘
I agree with everything you said about the Rhodes' channel and their homesteading and family. I found them through your channel this summer and I'm now hooked on both yours AND their channels!!! So inspiring! Thank you for modeling such wonderful values!!
