There's a thing in Mexican culture that is basically summed by a saying, "andale para que se te quite" which means that you deserve the bad thing that happened to you for being a fool and not paying attention, not being more aware, not thinking of your actions and of the subsequent consequences of those actions. It's something our moms use on us growing up for when kids do stupid shit like jump off a slide or something, we're not coddled, we're made to learn that we're personally responsible for what happens to us.

I always tell people that in Mexico your safety is up to you. How very observant of you to notice that about us. I think a good balance between being careful for yourself and others taking responsibility is best. I also think it's good for people's mental health as it makes your mind active and your 5 senses always in use. In the US I regularly see people, especially younger ones, crossing the streets without looking assuming drivers are just going to stop for them.

If there is a wire across the floor and you trip on it, it's your fault for not being mindful. I'm sure you've heard the word P3NDEJO in a variety of phrases. If you have been playing your guitar for a while now, you have a legitimate use for that cable. I need to be mindful of your setup because your working at earning a living. If I trip over it, I tripped over it. The wire didn't tangle my foot so I could fall. I tripped "por pend3jo." It's just another way of viewing life.

I made a similar comment the other day but it was about the flash floods in Houston and how some people die in their cars. I suggested that in some cases It could've been avoided if people weren't so pampered by technology and society. Bc when they 1st stall water usually isn't that deep or the current that strong but they stay in their cars probably bc they don't want to wet their shoes. Thinking they will be pulled to safety car and all and won't have to ruin their shoes. Their focus isn't strictly on survival and it should be.

You have to miss work and even if your boss tells you it’s OK (most will say it’s not), you’re 99% not getting paid for those days. You have to pay the lawyer upfront and the lawsuit might drag for months until you get compensation for tripping where the judge will say it’s yea 5000 pesos compensation because the reason is kinda laughable , you are at minus 40,000 by that point at the minimum for lost work days and legal fees. Plus anyone in Mexico who sues for tripping on a cable and just scraped their knee or something will be looked at as a clown

"Eso te pasa por pendejo, por no poner atencion a donde vas" We have a saying, "That's what you get for being an idiot". It generally means, "You deserve that for being an idiot and not paying attention". We are always raised being told it's our fault "ACCOUNTABILITY!"

If I had a trip with a wire walking on the street next to my dad he would have said, "levanta las patas cabrón". When I was a young kid I used to walk with my hands inside my pocket, and my father used to say to me "si te tropezas ni las pinches manos metes".

In the provinces of Mexico people are even more careful because there are no medical facilities nearby. And there you have to deal with dangerous vegetation, reptiles, and insects as well as rough terrain.

I moved my family to guadalajara because i didn't want to raise gringo kids... my kids know that there are booby traps every where and before going on the street to make sure it was safe.... i saw a young girl of about 13 get hit by a cat in the US after running into the cross walk while a truck stopped and proceeded to make a right turn, I'm sure that the truck was blamed but the girl ran into the crosswalk...😮

Buddy setting traps. He must have drank the water. Hopefully, their kids have this new 6th sense. This man tripped on his own cord finding it.

You don't expect to get compensation. If it's something obviously dangerous where a person or company is responsible, yes you can sue for reparations and medical expenses (not compensation).
And as for medical expenses you can get decent healthcare from very cheap with no insurance up to whatever you're willing to pay for an international-grade certified healthcare provider.

Es muy difícil que un Mexicano se haga responsable de casi nada. Vamos con la actitud de víctima de una colonización de siglos atrás.

Yes but it's not personal responsibility, because if it was, then the person in charge of the holes and the cables would fix them, cause they would have personal responsibility, but they don't. It's just normalized awareness for survival, cause otherwise you might not survive, might not get help or justice.

When you're with your friends, and if you're the only one that falls, the injuries are the least of your problems, your compas won't let you forget that you fell for being stupid or pendejo, and trust me, if that ever happens, you'll be aware of your surroundings from that moment on, cause if it happens to you a second time, you might as well move to another country. Lol.
For us Mexicans , even if we scrape our knees or hands, the first thing that worries us after a fall, is who saw us fall. Before the pain of a scraped knee or hand reaches our brain, the thought of, who saw me fall, will be the first thing that comes to mind. 😂

It's also the liberal use and understanding of the word pendejo. Such as, "pues que hizo el pendejo? " or "Es lo que merece por pendejo" Sympathy for the consequences of your own actions is low, while judgement and ridicule for said acts is very high.

We care about people but don’t cuddle them if they’re irresponsible. Also if you hurt yourself for not being careful no one will pay your bills, we’ll feed you and not let you starve but that’s it!
