Watch a mexican telenovela they are white skin with blue eyes and then you watch an american movie and they always put a mestizo or brown actor as a hispanic.
Eva Eagle it’s the same in Indian culture where Bollywood always uses light skin and hazel green eyes a lot, but Hollywood always portrays the same stereotype
Most of those light skinned actors aren’t even Mexican. Their from different Hispanic/Latino countries. Televisa has been known for discriminating those of indigenous backgrounds and African decent.
Really? I always thought that most of them, obviously except for the ones who are from Argentina or descendants of European immigrants, were mestizos, because that’s exactly what they’ve looked like to me all my life.
"Mexican" is a nationality. Most Mexicans are of a race known as "Mestizo" which is a mix of European and native blood. But there are many Mexicans of other races including pure European and pure Native blood.
I'm just trying to figure out, should I thank him for mentioning the Reconquista, or piss and moan because he breezed over it without actually naming it?
Eternal_Gemstone Wrong!! Spaniards come from Spain, again a Nationality not a race! Also Indian is not a race nore were they the first Native Americans!
Eddie Bro Bruh I told a guy from mexico that I'm Mexican too.. But hes like "no you're not, Mexican is a nationality, ur only mexican if youre born in mexico or get citizenship" 😂. Omg like how many times did I have to tell him that my heritage is Mexican & that I'm related to the nativeAmericans of Mexico. & that it doesnt matter if im from the US. My lineage is Mexico. I also told him that I'm more mexican than someone who is from Mexico with full European blood & 0 Native Ancestors from Mexico. FACTS. If a 100% european couple from Russia goes to Mexico & has a baby in Mexico, im still more Mexican than that baby. That baby has citizenship that says hes Mexican, hes Mexican through citizenship/papers... but im actually Mexican through heritage, lineage. & blood. Hence, we're more mexican than anyone in Mexico that doesnt have native Mexican ancestors. U dont need to be born in mexico to be Mexican. I'm a US citizen, & I'm Mexican. I'm Mexican & I'm a US citizen. I dont have Mexican citizenship, but Im still Mexican through heritage, lineage, culture, & blood.

With my two youngest brothers and my sister having almost white blonde hair with blue eyes, while I have brown hair and brown eyes. What is also funny is my Dad has red hair. Even though my family is 100% White/European the genetic differences between children and parents is surprising.
I know that's very funny this national pride is mistaken for racial pride. I remember most of my white Spanish peers in history class they use to say "nuestros antepasados? " Seran Los tuyos pinche indio!" when a proud classmate refer to the Aztecs. Indigenous were always the lowest social level, today you see many Indigenous origin people as Attorneys, accountants, CEO's,
I very respect Mexicans. In my country, people are not united. Nobody wants to recognize their own person in everyone. Chechens, Tatars, Russians, Yakuts, Bashkirs - all are nationalists. But foreigners know us all as "Asian, Caucausian and Slav Russians". Our country, Russia, is the largest only because it has remained an empire. The Spanish, British, Ottoman, Japanese, French, Portuguese Empire collapsed, and the Russian Empire simply changed its name to the period of socialism, and in the 90s again headed for imperialism and the dominance of Slavic Russians.
Very interesting video as a mexican I wanted to check out this video out. Latino is simply short for "Latin American" (Actual or of descent) because we couldn't tell where someone was originally from because of looks, accent (if). (or course many Hispanics- Latinos don't speak Spanish at all) so we said: Mira un "Latino"! Most used Hispanic (which I deem more appropriate and less confusing) Hispanic as in of Latin American origin. I never ever questioned my race living in my country until i left my country a few years ago, where race seems to be a big thing outside Latin America, specifically the US
I was born in 1971 and grew up in Texas. The term Mexican was synonymous with Hispanic of Mexican descent, because the term American was synonymous with Anglo of light skin. After leaving Texas and traveling the world in the Navy, it's a pretty silly term because there are so many Hispanics from the Caribbean who obviously are not of Mexican descent.
the are literally millions of white people living in Latin America. Argentina is basically a white country because Argentina never had a native American population or if they had, they got assimilated, married with white Europeans and eventually the native population diluted into nothing. same story with Uruguay. the most famous "Hispanic" person in South America is the football player Lionel Messi. he is more white than the damn Santa Claus. or a Scandinavian person.
For us latinos living outside the US it is surprising and disconcerting to see how much of a focus on race there is in the US. Here in Costa Rica race is not really an issue. There is a lot of discrimination and xenophobia but it stems from cultural and socioeconomic factors, not race.
Exactly the same in Mexico. I have had fights against gringos that tell me Im wrong about MY OWN nationality. Some have told me I have to chose between white, Mexican and Jewish as if all of those cant coexist. Its fascinating how triggered they get when you challenge their race views. While nationality is real, race is a lie. Science is the ultimate barrier against lies.there are no white people let alone a white race. There are no yellow people let alone a yellow race, the same with red people and a red race. There are however, brown and black people , but you will never hear a brown person refer to himself as a brown. Africans in the diaspora refer to themselves as black, but that is because of the influence of the European criminals who forced them into bondage and removed all knowledge of their prior culture, language, and religion, and imposed their European names and everything else on them. If you travel to Africa you will never hear an African refer to himself as a black, even though his skin color might be jet black. I am Nigerian and Kenyan. As long as you deny the truth and play the silly race and color game you will be lost in the BS that it is based on, and that BS is based on bigotry.
Agree. When the speaker first spoke, he said he was an ‘American,’ Mexicans are also Americans (?). In the U.S. it's comical that we identify a black person as Afro-American. What if that person was from Afro-European or from Africa, then how do we identify them? Do we just call them Africans? Is we do, we’ll get shot.

I was taught when I was a kid by parents that no matter how pale or dark you are, there's at least a drop of amerindian blood in all of us (New Zealand's ethnic perspective seems the closest to this ideal) And let's be honest, no matter how dark or pale we are, to the taquero we'll always be "güero" XD
The funny thing about the New Zealanders is their ancestors were the white wakapapas who were already on the island when the Polynesians came they were white white like the chachapoyas of Peru with blonde hair and facial and body tattoos before they intermarried they were just Polynesians . Those dances with the Haka dance and tattoos are all to honor them. There’s a documentary called New Zealand skeletons in the cupboard about the whakapapa lineage and a few families left with the blonde and red hair.
@Heidi Hoe they had families of whaka blondes in the documentary skeletons in the cupboard new zealand and they traced them to India and originally persia which now doesn't look a thing ethnically like it once did. It's like going back to America and expecting it to be indigenous but finding everyone else there . The truth is people are always migrating and the idea of whites come from europe and blacks from africa, asians from asia ect work most of the time but not in many cases, in which the smithsonian will sweep it all under the rug. Like the original population of new zealand . It's something no one wants to touch ,but the remains are still there.
Here in Japan the assumption is if you’re a foreigner that you’re American or possibly Jamaican. It’s not offensive. It’s just convenient. The poster for Brazil around 6:00 is really interesting. Funny how greed works in advertising even under a tyrannical military dictatorship.

If your parents are from Mexico then that would mean that you’re Latino/hispanic, too, though. Being either is about ethnicity (cultural background like music, language, food, traditions, sometimes religion). Race is more about what makes up your physical appearance. For instance, my mother is mixed race, light skinned Panamanian and my father is white from the U.S.. Because they’re both white skinned, I am too and because I was mainly raised around my Latino family, I have kept to many habits, traditions, and cultural customs which means that I too am Latino/hispanic. Another example would be Lupita Nyongo. Her parents were Kenyan and she was born in and grew up around the Kenyan embassy in Mexico. Because she has embraced Mexican cultural traditions since birth, she is a Latina/hispanic. If I’m misunderstanding what you’re trying to say, though, my apologies.

So if to you and a lot of other people claim that Mexicans are of mixed race, what are the 27 million indigenous cultures of Mexico? i will tell you what and who they are, they are the true 100% Mexicans the original people of Mexico! The name/word Mexico and mexicano is derived from the Nahuatl word (mexica), the original tribe/tribes better known in the modern time as the Aztecs. So this false idea that all Mexicans are mestizos is a myth! The base of what is known today of the Mexican culture come from the original tribes/cultures of Mexico. 68 different languages spoken in Mexico plus much more dialects combined they equal around 200. Spanish supposedly is the official language of Mexico but the spanish spoken in Mexico is so mixed with words that are indigenous or are derived from a indigenous language and are not found in the spanish dictionary. Mexico is known as an indigenous country because of the so many indigenous cultures, its history, traditions and folclore. So Mexico and Mexicans is more indigenous than what you think they are!

The 20% trace amounts is likely Middle Eastern blood, because before Spaniards left Europe to colonize the Americas, Arabs had conquered Spain for over 700 years, and so a lot of Spaniards have admixture from the Middle East. This explains why there are Spanish & Hispanic people with similar features to middle easterners (tan skin, full lips, dark hair/eyes). Southern Italians are also proven to have on average around 28% middle eastern admixture, which is why they get made fun of by central and northern Italians who are fully white.

@SABRINA C. D. so true! I am Canadian. Born to a black mother and a white father. My skin is light as a young person (when most people here were white, and someone like me was rare) people would ask if I was Italian or Hawaiian. In order to be Mexican you need to have Nativeamerican in you from Mexico. Because the word Mexico comes from a Native tribe in Mexico. Sooo Native American Mexicans are Mexican.... Mestizos are Mexican... & Castizos are Mexican.
Interesting idea about mestizo being one race rather than mixed race. Mestizo literally means mixed. But you are right, the mixing recedes into a distant past and unifies us. I suspect that what is completely different are the social implications of "belonging to a race" or "mixing with another race" in the way that is understood in the US.
This is extremely useful and very instructive for Americans. It will certainly upend their worldview and would have helped the discourse on race in the time it was most needed. I've learned a lot in 11 minutes. Thanks

I remember when I was answering the format needed to apply for a student visa in the US, when they suddenly asked me my race. I was sooo confused, I almost had an identity crisis haha. I filled the square where it said "Hispanic/Latino" but then there was this option to compliment it with "White" "Black" "Native American" and "Asian". I was like "Well, for sure I am neither black or asian, but I don´t think I am white enough to be considered white, Or am I?" so I called an american friend and asked her: "Hey, Do you think I am white enough to be considered white for American standards?" And she was like: "I think you are, you don´t have dark skin and your face doesn´t look indigenous to me, it´s more like Southern Europe or maybe even a Middle East appearence. For an average American, you are a hispanic white." But then my cousin interrupted us and said: "What are you talking about? Sure you are not white. When I studied in the US they almost considered me black. If you don´t have blond hair, blue eyes and transparent skin, you are not white for them. Plus, do you feel ashamed of your roots? Do you want to reject your Native American ancestors and pretend you are European?" And that last part was the once that convinced me, and I simply left the square marked as "Hispanic" with no other specification. It was such a weird question for me.

And let's be honest, no matter how dark or pale we are, to the taquero we'll always be "güero" XD

Thanks

I was like "Well, for sure I am neither black or asian, but I don´t think I am white enough to be considered white, Or am I?" so I called an american friend and asked her:
"Hey, Do you think I am white enough to be considered white for American standards?"
And she was like: "I think you are, you don´t have dark skin and your face doesn´t look indigenous to me, it´s more like Southern Europe or maybe even a Middle East appearence. For an average American, you are a hispanic white."
But then my cousin interrupted us and said: "What are you talking about? Sure you are not white. When I studied in the US they almost considered me black. If you don´t have blond hair, blue eyes and transparent skin, you are not white for them. Plus, do you feel ashamed of your roots? Do you want to reject your Native American ancestors and pretend you are European?"
