This is a great IF you want to recycle the sludge; makes fir excellent fertilizer. Dirty water comes in, heavier crap settles to the bottom as the water is diffused. For looking for more like a bio- filter. You could add anything from lava rocks ( harder to clean out filter), bio balls, or mesh. The key is to provide a surface for " bio" to grow on. Still, you'll likely end up with sludge on the bottom, but the water will be cleaner from a " bio" point of view. Nitrates are is a factor that bio also addresses fairly well depending on the set- up. Adding a single UV light where the water pools before returning really makes a huge difference if you like clear water. Adding salt is another plus.
Speaking experience 35x17x4deep pond with over 40 koi.

Creo que hay que encapsular la caneca o el tubo de UV, debido a que lo ponen muy folclórica mente, es una luz dañina a la piel, y puede producir cáncer, por lo que estos tubos se ponen dentro de otro tubo donde entra el agua y recircula alrededor del tubo UV y así elimina bacterias y no perjudica a las personas

I am original from Nottingham England but I emigrated to Newfoundland Canada in 1990 - 2018 I decided to keep koi in my garden pond like I did in the UK but here the winter is brutal like -20 is very common so we have our own chalenges. Plus we can’t purchase equipment so I have to make everything ie filters etc.

some friend suggested me that he burned a iron pipe piece or gi pipe in wood fire and then melted holes in the plastic drum.

did you forget to put sand and gravel and stones bruh ? filtration is incomplete without these at least for a dirty pond water!

Outflow should be at least 150% of inflow.

Just a sponge is enough ?? What about other mediums like bioballs, stones and another layers ??
Normally we use only sponge and UV it’s working great for us
Lava rock of various sizes, the lava rock can create anaerobic as well as aerobic bacteria to convert and remove natrates.

Depending on the flow rate of the pump the return should be 150% larger than the input, most people install 2 returns for safety!
About as useful as a chocolate tea spoon
We do it for our tank at shop it's work very well
