Love your drawings and explinations in your step by step. I have seen this type of set up in other videos, but you make it more understandable for a beginner.
Built the 55 gallon rock filter and it was crystal clear in less than a day! Worth the time and money (in fittings)
I am not sure I could be so brave to handle the hole-saw as you did at the 07.20 minute mark. One slip and an artery could be severed!

I appreciate you have the intake on the bottom and the out put from the top that way any media will stay in the bottom due to gravity, I would think a nice thick layer of ultra fine woven fabric over the top of the media would add further micro filtration for particles so small gravity doesn't apply to them. 👍👍👍
I have tried this before and it definitely catches crud in the filter pads. But it's extra work to clean them out or replace them. For my needs the gravel is taking care of of the water fine. It's always nice and clear.
Another great video my friend - I also make all my own Filters they are cheaper easier to clean and I think way more efficient.

Comparing similar videos, some are top to bottom flow, some are opposite like yours - which is better I wonder ?
Thanks for the great video. Would love to hear more about the types of barrels are okay for filters like this. I have been looking at sourcing some in my area, but it can be hard to tell what's safe for outdoor pond builds with regard to plastic type (HDPE I guess?), UV resistance, "food-safe" vs "food-grade", and what was previously stored in a container. And of course, if there's a way how to determine some of these attributes by examining a given barrel.
I don't know that I can help with that. This barrel help a natural soap that we use at work. It's supposed to be safe enough to drink. I wouldn't do that, but that's what they say. We have other barrels that have more harsh chemicals in them and I would not use them for this build. I think if it was used for food, it will work for the filter.
Does it matter if you clean it properly genuine quearion
There are so many videos on filters on youtube...all slightly different. Very confusing. I have 2 small ponds with a small river connecting them. I was thinking of making something simple filter where my punk draws water from the LEFT pond through a hose over to my right my pond side but drains into a bucket first...and inside this id put a hole at the bottom with some rocks...then on top of the rocks some polyfil and then on top of the polyfill id have some kitchen sponges and on top of the kitchen sponds id have a pasta strainer to catch big things... does that sound insane? And does the order of the things sound correct. Oh and I am unsure what the difference between polyfill and sponge purpose is.

I just use a 5 micron filter bag and connect it to the end of my transfer pump hose.
What size pond will this filter be good for? I have an 83,000 gallon pond and I would like to build a filter but I am not sure how big it should be. Thanks for the video.
Great idea.. But one questions though for the drain pipe why don't u drill below the drum? So it will totally drain the water and dirt. So you don't have to wash or move the drum.. But you need to make a stand for the drum though.
I thought about it. But if I did that, I would have used a Bulkhead fitting instead of a Uni-seal. I may try it in a future build. This is working pretty good like this though. I'm sure I have sediment sitting on a small layer down there, but it is not affecting the filter.
Do you have a complete list of fittings you used?
If you run the drill in reverse after the drill bit makes the guide hole, the hole saw will drill the hole without jumping
I will do this on the next build.
Thank you for an inspirational video. So much so that I got a barrel like yours today and its standing minus the lid in my garden. What I need to know before going any further is what 'power' of pump will I need to get to force a current up through those layers of rock and gravel. I've been looking at Oase filter pumps with various litres per hour flow rates, but would they have the umph to force the water upwards through the layers. - More information/guidance please.
What size of tank, or pond will you be running it on? What kind of fish load will you have? My pump is way oversized for this build. I only used it because I already had it sitting around. The other thing you have to be aware of is, how high will the outlet be sticking out of the water? The head height will cause a drop in flow rate.

@@BabblinginmyBackyard My pond is small 2x2metres and about 1m deep with a total 20 koi. gpldfish and goldrn orfe mix. The barrel above ground will be approx 8' -12" above the water level. I've a Oase pressure filter inline so that the barrel will just 'tidy up' its outflow.
So, on your pressure filter, what is the input size? How large of an output will you put on the filter. I would not go less than 4500 LPH for your pond size. I get this question very often on my videos so I made a video on picking a pump.

Great filter. Where did you purchase the Uniseal. I've looked on Amazon and people complain about the fit. Like you I need a two 2 inch and also two 1 1/2 inch.

If the complaint is that they are too tight then it is supposed to be that way. They can be difficult to get in there, if they were easier to get in then you may have leaks. I will put these links in the description as well.
Amazon Uniseals work fine. I couldn't get them to work (FRUSTRATING) at first either then all of a sudden I saw a review explaining how to do it. First, make sure your hole saw doesn't gyrate when spinning, it will create a larger hole if it doesn't spin perfectly and you will leak around it. I only use the Diablo hole saws for this reason. Drill the holes with drill going IN REVERSE. Hold the drill as steady as possible and don't push, let it almost melt through. Once you have a hole, gently sand back the burrs from the hole. Lastly, use a sanding drum on your drill to round off the edges of the PVC pipe (6:53 on this video) you are putting through the Uniseal. Put olive oil from your kitchen on the PVC tube going through the uniseal. Key for me is a hole saw that is perfectly steady and drill hole with drill in reverse. Any side to side from the hole saw will give you a large hole that then leaks.

Hi, can you suggest me a type of pump. I am using a 500 ltrs tank. I am thinking of aquascape 91011 aquaforce 1000. Will it work ?
It is a smaller pump but in most cases should be sufficient for your tank size. I would say if you have a heavy fish load, increase the pump size. If you are pumping up into something, increase the pump size. Also, I love Aquascape as a company. Though they are pricy for pumps. Because of that, I do not prefer to use their pumps. @@BabblinginmyBackyard thanks for the reply. I was checking amazon india , they dont have that brand. They have sobo or sunsun. Can you pls suggest what capacity i should get. My pond capacity is around 7500 ltrs. Depth is around 1.5 ft average. My filter tank is 500 ltrs and is kept 5 mtrs away from the pond.
The pump you were talking about using would be on the low end for that pond size that I would use. It would turn half the pond capacity per hour if you don't have any head height that you are pumping up to. If it were me I would at least try to turn the whole pond every hour. So match the Liters per hour to your pond size. This should also increase your line diameter. That will make a big difference in the amount of water you can move. The pump you picked will work. If you get a good price on it, I would get it. But if you just have to pay a little more for a bigger version. I would would pay a little more and have a pump that can move more water.

Hi again. Hope you are doing fine. I am now going to make the filter as i told you earlier. My one doubt before I start. In the inlet pipe, what if I only place the crates, without extending the pipe from inside. Will it work ? The only reason is i failed to find the uniseal, so I have to go for traditional tank connector.

You’re going to lose an arm cross cutting like that.
Mistake concept. The pump doesn't create pressure. The pump produces a flow.
Wrong! Pumps produce Head (Pressure). The head must overcome the system resistance (Friction, Distance and Elevation) to produce the desired flow at the desired delivery point.
