- Watch as I redesign my mechanical filter barrel to help trap more heavy debris inside a 14 gallon plastic barrel.
I've been searching for a 14 gallon barrel for weeks to complete this project, but I ended up buying a new one here:

I have recently started using buffer pads for filters. They come in different grades of of foam. I like the really coarse ones. They are normally one inch thick and you can find them all the ways up to 27 inches in diameter, which is handy. They are about $10 each.
Such an awesome set up❤smart
Great video Greg! That's a great pickup for your central sump system. I found the video very informative.
Looks great :)
What is use in all my filters are 100% polyester pillows that cost $2.37 at Walmart :)
Been doing it for years with great performance and results.
Never thought about it. Genius! Thanks!
very good The only thing that i would do would be to add a sock to the inlet pipe it would cut down on the smaller matter going into the filter as well as the need for a complete tear down of the main filter to clean the foam filter media
Hello Sir Ur setup is nice...pls share what cordless drilling machine r U used to put holes on that drum
I used a DeWalt cordless drill with a hole saw bit
Cool setup. Might be worth taking a look at how the aquaponics guys have a similar setup using gravity to separate the particles instead of floss. It's called a radial flow sediment filter. Same principle as cyclone dust collectors. Many started with this setup, then switched to the radial flow because it's more efficient and you don't have to use any filter material. They didn't like this method because if your flow rates aren't high enough, that far side of the barrel opposite the drain, would stagnate and cause ammonia spikes. Plus, you can't see the bottom of the floss when it gets dirty. You have everything you need right there, just some plumbing changes and you're GTG.
joeashbubemma I've tried a radial flow before, I didn't feel like I had enough space to dial it in correctly, maybe one day!
What about insted put the internal bucket, don´t use a SOCK filter, big enough to do the job... do you think it would work...??
Thanks for the video, I thought about doing the same thing but I thought about putting the inlet near the bottom of the small barrel than stack the filter pads on top of the inlet so the water flows upward through the filters then over the top of the small barrel. If I add a ball valve to the inlet in side the small barrel I could pull the whole small barrel out to clean it without any waste leaving the bottom. Would this idea work?
sounds like it could work, i avoided drilling low because i didn't want the chance of a leak down low which could drain a lot of water on the floor
Nice video. I saw this video after I uploaded mine last evening. creativity at its best.
Simple yet effective. Like the way you think bud.
Not sure on how it would work out but maybe a little boiling pot style strainer for your coarse media it might be the way to go
🤔 if you use the lava rock it would make sense to put it in large mesh sacks to allow for easier cleaning of the lava rock.
To step up the filter add another barrel that’s fed from the bottom and fill it with gravel or pumice then sand. Add a Hose attachment on the bottom of the barrel to allow or easy cleaning/draining. This will sleep filter and highly polished your water.
Only a fish keeper would be excited about getting a new barrel
JWA79 and immediately drill holes in the bottom, hah!
The hobby completely changes the way you think , i cant walk around any type of store and look at some random object and wonder if i could use it in the fish room haha
Is this filtration system for that aquarium? Hey, there is not such thing as over filtering
Won’t a foam from an old mattress do it?
Hey Greg, how do you run the pvc through the plastic drums with out leaks?
I believe you need to get a hole saw and a pvc pipe connector and attach it to the barrel.
Also be careful the hole size need to be the size of the connector not the size of the outflow. (Ex: 1 1/2 inch outflow = 40mm hole size)
Great idea
Would this work just as well for a saltwater tank?
What do you use to secure the PVC through the hole. What type of washer/ seal is that?

I think for $29 it was worth it. This looks like it'll work alot better than your previous mechanical filtration techniques.
Wes-Fish Care they are as low as $5 used on craigslist, just hard to find
so i copied your idea and have had awesome results. only have to clean ever 6months. when ever some ask for a good diy filer i recommended this
I did modify it a little where it comes in due to what barrel I had
Make more videos!!
Que beleza de sistema amigo
Brilliant
Nice setup Greg. What did you say the material was that you put in the new barrel along with the lava rock?
Wichita Falls Fishkeeper matala filter mats, common for koi ponds
Nice.,👍
I add hardwood charcoal to all my filters.
Wow nice
you've got enough barrels and enough flow, have you thought about a swirl filter? ... on my agenda
D _Ron I've tried one in the past, didn't work as well as I'd hoped, not enough space
Couldn't u use some mesh to throw over your elbow going into the second barrel? Stop the media 100 percent no matter the directiom.
Also that's bad ass
Do you have a video on your k1 media barrrel build?
