    As a chef … I’ve never eaten or prepared a razor clam. This was very informative and educational. An edutainment VID… thanks for taking the time to shoot it. I’m often adjectives to make a UA-cam to showcase a dish etc. I usually poo poo it .. thinking there is way too much content already out here on UA-cam. Today .. your video inspired me.
    Can’t wait to add this to my things I’ve tried .. to EAT 😋and prep 👩🏻‍🍳🌶️🐚🌊👍🏼

    Nice how to Vid... and Great Haul on The Clams!... Made my mouth water and belly rumble... then you had to mention the Dungy's YUM! LoL!~ just sad not to many Razors found up my way here where I'm located now... times like these I miss being on the Peninsula where I could go for a drive and find a good spot to dig

      Thank you. I hope to get out and get some Dungy's in the next few weeks. The razor clam guts work really well for bait. I'm not sure where you live now, but I hope you are able to get out to get some clams.

      Unfortunately the clams have been a bit absent the last ten years or so. They finally opened it up to 15 clams per person for four days. Today is the last day, and I took three of my kids out and we found about 8. One was a decent size but the rest were all small. I want to go to the west side of Cook Inlet sometime though.

      Hopefully, clam populations will recover this summer for next year. I'm glad you were able to get a couple.

    There is a way ro squeeze the gut sack and trim it and the digestive rod all at the same time. Leaving the foot attached to create a full Clam steak.
    66 years born and raised in Washington and had to clean clams at 5 years old. Get the kids doing their job.

      Absolutely, but you will need to buy a non-resident license.

    • @MichaelClaffy
      @MichaelClaffy Рік тому

      Yes. There is a higher sharge for an out of state license, but still well worth it.

    They kind look like the smaller version of geoducks

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Рік тому +1

      Yes, they do, in a way. Many people confuse them with geoducks, but they are a different species

    At what point does the clam die?

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Рік тому +3

      Clams are exceedingly perishable; there is no length of time after they are dead that you should eat them. They should always be killed as part of the cooking process. They may open (they are naturally filter feeders, and open to try and feed and respire), but if tapped should close indicating they are still alive.

    The two restaurants look cleaning is too anal for me. No offence but after 55 years of razor clams, I can clean 75 in a half hour. ho has the patience to wait to start pigging out on them.
    You did a great demonstration for even a first timer. Bravo!

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Рік тому +3

      Thanks, not quite 55 years of experience but over 30... I typically never clean them as steaks. Takes too much time like you I'd rather get them cleaned as quickly as possible to pig out!

      @@SoundFishing2020First of all, I live in Shelton Wa. Atta Boy! I remember when a 5-gallon bucket was okay to dig (just barely remember that). Then it became 45 per limit then 30 (I think), then 15. The last 2 years in Washington state it's 20 per limit, as you already know. Best was the last time I dug in Alaska I think it as 60. That was over a decade + ago.
      I can eat about 12 to 15 per meal if really hungryand I've never turned one down yet/
      I'm also a very long shirttail semi relation to the Mr. Batstone, who had the clam gun patented. And currently I am building a gun prototype for people that have a physical handicap to assist them in harvesting those tasty little buggers.
      Great video and I'm subscribing to your channel.

      @SoundFishing2020  Рік тому +1

      I really hope this year the limits remain at 20 or more! I absolutely commend you for your efforts in developing a clam gun for those with a physical handicap. I would love to see more people able to get out and get clams. Again, very commendable! Also, it's really neat how it ties back to Mr. Batstone as well.

    Gaper not razor

    • @SoundFishing2020
      @SoundFishing2020  Рік тому +5

      You are incorrect. The clam shown is a Pacific Razor Clam "Siliqua patula". A Pacific Gaper Clam "Tresus nuttallii" looks completely different.
