By far the easiest way to clean clams. My husband usually cleans them but this time I wanted to learn an easier way to do it and this is it. Thank you for posting this video.
I've never actually cleaned clams. I remember watching my grandmother cleaning them as a little boy. Now its my turn to give it ago. Looks pretty easy.
I got my limit of 20 out at Copalis Beach last week. I gave them away because I didn't want to clean them, but now that I've seen your video I'm going back this weekend for some keepers. Thanks!
@@SoundFishing2020 Just got home again today from another dig this morning at Copalis and am rewatching your video. I kept my limit for myself this time :) Thanks for posting the instructions, I really appreciate it.
Lot's of ways to do the same thing... I actually have another video showing the method you mentioned. We find this way a little easier especially when we get a lot of clams!
The other video on my channel shows how to clean a whole clam and keep it intact. This video is more for recipes not requiring a whole clam (chowder, strips, etc.). If you got a better way of cleaning clams by all means, make a video. Just know that no matter how right you think your way is there will always be someone to tell you you're wrong, and it's not right. Critics are a dime a dozen, but best of luck.
I had an uncle who was a commercial fisherman and lived in Westport, WA. It's a bit of a strain trying to correctly recall something from 55 years ago; but I think he said he would keep razor clams in a bucket of seawater to which he'd added cornmeal. I believe he said that the clams would feed on the cornmeal overnight and essentially flushed out their digestive tracts, making it easier for my aunt to clean them the following day. Has anyone else heard of that? Is it a real thing? EDIT: I should have Googled before posting. Purging clams is definitely a thing! Now, I guess I need to solicit opinions on the practice. Pro or Con folks?
Purging clams is something I grew up doing and only recently stopped due to the recommendation by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. According to their website... It is not recommended to transport them in seawater, unless for just a short time. In seawater they continue to respirate and as a metabolic by-product they produce ammonium. In a closed container they begin to suck that back in and that can lead to an off-taste in the clam flesh. In freshwater they die and begin to deteriorate - the same when stored directly on ice. I have heard some people use aerators from fish tanks to add oxygen but have not tried it myself.
@@SoundFishing2020 I appreciate the reply and the information. While he did not comment upon the practice, I did notice in a "Yakfish Taco" video, which I watched yesterday after viewing yours, that the video producer placed an aquarium aerator hose into a bucket of razor clams. I don't know whether the water contained cornmeal or not. It's an interesting topic. I just recently purchased my first fishing license since 1989. Back then, I was not much a fan of seafood except for halibut, which I obtained from a friend by trading elk venison. Having developed more appetite for a variety of seafood over the decades, and with the WA license actually being reasonably priced for an old fart like me*, I'm looking forward to supplementing diet with wild fish and seafood this year. I'll likely be viewing a few more of your videos to see what else I can learn. Thanks again! * (I can't say the same for Washington's turkey hunting license, which I refuse to purchase even though I inherited a property in Stevens County that is crawling with the birds.)
Thank you for your thoughtful and well crafted comments. I wish you the best in your endeavors and quest to eat more fish and seafood. I hope you will find some usefulness in my other videos, and hope to see you out there on the water.
Nope Sandra Z has you beat on time, cleanliness and leaves whole clam. Watch it I know you will agree, her method is the best. On point. Peace. Happy Holidays.
All good, brother. There are lots of ways to do it. To your point though nothing is better than a whole clam with windows and digger attached when frying or sautéing them. Really just depends on how you're cooking them. Best of luck and thanks for sharing how you do things. Always good to get the perspective of others.

My mom would kick my butt if I ever cleaned my clams like that. The boot of the clam is the best part, don’t cut half of it off. There is a way to steak a clam keeping it whole
I guess it depends on how you're cooking the clam? 🤔 if you're making chowder or strips, this is a super easy and efficient way to do it. I recently posted a new video showing how to leave the clam whole like steak. At the end of the day, do whatever makes mom happy 😊
This is a lazy way to clean the clams. Also clams will not taste at its best. Thus, your compromising taste in a quick and easy way. The right way is to bring some seawater home and open, clean while they are cold and dump it into the seawater and rinse it gently. You throw away the sand settled at the bottom of the seawater bucket. Clean this way many times until no sand is visible. This method is tiring and hard way but it is the right way to clean the clams. Koreans never compromise taste of fresh clams. NO PUN INTENDED @ Sound Fishing.
The title of the video is Easy Way to Clean Razor Clams. While I acknowledge there are many ways to clean razor clams, to include the labor intensive way you outlined, I must again point out this is an easy way. Thanks for your input though.
I'm sorry, but you are incorrect. This is a Pacific Razor Clam, it's scientific name is Siliqua patula. The Pacific Geoduck Panopea generosa looks completely different.
You had me until you cut the guts off the digger foot, wasting a substantial piece of good clam. Why do that? Express the viscera with even pressure on both sides, pull the intestine, and you’re done. That was painful to watch. But everything else was spot on, including leaving the tip of the neck. Your 10 slipped to a 6 with that one senseless cut.
@@SoundFishing2020 We all do it a little bit differently. And some of us tend to think our way is the best way 😂 I use chicken for crab bait, but I am going to put every molecule of razor clam meat into the frying pan. Going to check out the new video now. Keep posting!

@@SoundFishing2020 I have never seen a North Oregon coast local clean clams like this. Fully intact windows, digger split and the guts and lungs removed with a flat lay.
