When looking into featherweights, I saw some people get them painted different colors. This looks like a great idea to continue personalizing their setup.

I always hear about the bad odor. Is it the wood, the glue or mildew?

The Featherweight Schoolhouse Maintenance & Tutorials has a "Cosmetic Refurbishing" section that addresses the odor specifically.

Old wood often has a bad smell, and it can come from lots of reasons, from glue to mildew. Whenever I do a restoration of anything, if it smells bad I wash it thoroughly with soapy water, then spritz it with vinegar in a spray bottle and set it in the sunlight to dry, if the season permits. If it still stinks I then go with a strong Clorox type bleach and water solution and repeat the spritzing and sunshine. At that point, if it still smells bad, and I am committed to the restoration there are other possible solutions, and they depend on several factors. On this case I would use spray shellac and give it however many coats necessary until it only smells like shellac, then cover it. This is a good solution for the inside of dresser drawers. I had one that absolutely reeked of moth balls. After much work, the shellac solved it in one coat.

Thanks for this tutorial. I didn't know the boxes were timber. My box is in pretty good shape but the smell on the inside is awful. Is there any way of getting rid of the smell or is it the glue? So the only way is to strip it? I am happy to recover the whole box but somehow feel like I shouldn’t because it's an antique. I picked it up a few years ago at a market and have just pulled it out and started fixing it up and sewing with it. The way the case smells at the moment makes me not want to even use it to store the machine let alone take it anywhere :-)
