I tried different methods to get rid of that smell. I sprayed the inside with OdoBan and left it in the sun for a week. I closed it and put an unwrapped bar of soap in it. I placed dryer sheets in it and that helped eliminate t some of the smell that it’s not as pungent. I changed the dryer sheets out every 5 days for a month and now the smell is less noticeable that I can have it in my sewing space. I think the dryer sheets worked best for me. What a treasure you found.
I scored on a Featherweight at a garage sale with the intention of parting it out and making $$$. However, the machine, although looking rough, worked like a dream. It has become my favorite machine to use. They were built to do one thing and do it well, and that is exactly why it's still going strong. Now I want another one! 😂
The Featherweight is a very collectable machine. I had one. The buttonholer makes wonderful buttonholes. I used to go around twice to make sure they were reinforced. Im so sorry I let it get away from me.
It's really fun to see these old machines. Even though I sew on a much more modern machine, I love the design and simplicity of the older ones. It's wonderful that people are refurbishing them for use.
I bought the Featherweight's cousin the Singer 301A for $30. I refurbished the motor. Cleaned and lubed it and it is a wonderful sewer. Enjoy your legendary machine.
Keep that Singer. I have my GMa's machine plus a 2nd machine I got for $25. You'll never find a better machine. Make sure you tell your kids or family members what a prize you have for the future when you might not be around.
It has been said that the smell is from the felt lining under the machine. Take off the bottom and replace or clean that lining that has collected oil and dirt.
The glue in the case also smells. Drastic measures have to be taken for the case - like baking it or stripping it to the bare wood and replacing the fabric.
Please don't use any old grease or oil in your sewing machine. In this video, I used regular zoom spout oil. And, I've already ordered the Sew Retro grease for the potted motor! Thanks again for watching.
The Featherweight Shop in Idaho has tutorials and supplies for cleaning and maintenance. Get new grease and oil by all means. My case also stinks to high heaven. The true solution is to strip it and re-cover it. I bought a reproduction case. I tried baking the original case at a low temperature and made the house stink for a while. The case still stinks.
Keep the oil can. There should be a place inside the carrying case that holds the oil can. I believe you can empty the can, clean it out and put new oil in it. I had same problem with smell. I put a dehumidifier pellets inside a small bucket and pulled the moisture out of the case and then put lavender essential oil inside cotton balls in case and left the case slightly open for a couple weeks. It got
Great looking machine. Be careful using a cotton swab. Sometimes the fibers will come off and jam something up. Also the lube on the gears needs to be very little. 1 dab should do it. Thanks for sharing your machine video.
The old lubricants do degrade, and new stuff is not expensive. The Featherweight Shop has modern grease specifically designed for the right melting temp for the motor. The original stuff doesn't melt as fast, so it doesn't lubricate as well as the newer stuff. Have fun! When I got my machine, I thought it was gold plated. Nope, it was coated in nicotine. You can imagine what the case smelled like...
I prefer the 401 to 500 series Singer. Those were the last of the all metal slant shanks. You don't need cams for most of those models if they had the built in zig zag. Oil is integral to the metal machines. It is messy but you only use a drop. Don't use the older oil. Kept it as a souvenir??? N,oh don't think so. There is probably a musty odor to the carrying case and that odor will not come out. Its a permanent smell. I'm fairly certain those weren't leather cases so saddle soap isn't going to do much. Anything else is just masking the odor. My father worked for Singer in the 60's and I've been around Singer machines for a bit. If you don't sew, flip it.
I have the same problem with my case, I tried everything and nothing worked! I left it outside for an entire winter in Canada, in a shed in the Spring in didn’t change. I left it in the shed, I couldn’t bring it back into my house 🤭😖
I'd get rid of the grease and oil. If you want to save them, put them in something so they don't leak. Grab yourself a handful of Bounce Fabric Softener sheets and leave them in the empty case for several months. It worked in my case!
The featherweight cases are known for their smell. Use a potpourri, mothballs, thin cedar slats, dryer sheets, other scent remover. I'd never part with my featherweight over that issue, that can be dealt with..
Don't use the lubricants. They do get old. It isn't worth the potential risk of using something that has broken down over all these years. Sewing machine oil is clear, and yellows with age. Enjoy your new machine!
I’ve been sewing with a Singer Featherweight for 68 years and wouldn’t trade it for any other.
Hello, please, keep the case!!!! It adds value to your machine!!!!
Congratulations with your beautifull Featherweight and so many accesories.
Thank you so much!

Exactly!

I'm going to take your advice and keep it 🙂

That is the best little machine you’ll ever have. I have my mothers and I use that paint so much.❤
I bought the Featherweight's cousin the Singer 301A for $30. I refurbished the motor. Cleaned and lubed it and it is a wonderful sewer. Enjoy your legendary machine.
WOW!!! You scored!
of course you werent going to resell it! gotta keep that.
The oil can is an awesome souvenior. You will want to use FRESH oil and grease.
Keep that Singer. I have my GMa's machine plus a 2nd machine I got for $25. You'll never find a better machine.
Make sure you tell your kids or family members what a prize you have for the future when you might not be around.
It's so pretty. Keep inspiring.
Thank you! 😊
Did you get rid of the machine the featherweight if you’re going to get rid of it, I’ll buy it❤

that is an old tube of grease, likely is from the 50's. prolly ok to use but I'd use new.
I aired out and use bounce fabric sheets

Can you tell me where you order the Sew Retro grease from please?

Great Video, Love the sound of the birds. Sometimes its better to keep investment grade machines... If you sold it it would be a lucky customer.
Your right!
have seen people but charcoal briquets in old furniture drawers to lessen the smell.
the plain kind, not the type with lighter fluid in them
Maybe some baking soda could help with the odor? That is a beautiful machine.
Thanks. I'll definitely try it.

Fill an old sock with kitty litter and close it up inside the case and let it sit for a few days
This is a wonderful idea. Thanks 🙂

Thanks for telling me about the grease. Hopefully you were able to get the case clean.
Discard old oil and grease. It does break down over time.
I not use either the oil or the grease. Petroleum products degrade over time. Replacements are inexpensive.
Thanks! I'll definitely buy brand new oil and grease. It will be so much better than ruining a good machine.
Absolutely.
Did you ever get the stink from you case? If you did, how?
Yes, I found a charcoal odor absorber bag. It works well thus far.
Thanks, I’ll look for that.
Need to.get up more courage to service mine. Will repeat watching
Use symbol car wax on outside case

Yes. Those cases really are horrible. I thought about putting it in a deep freezer. But, it sounds like that's not even going to work.
Wipe down your featherweight with a cloth and oil. Do not use detergent or other cleaners. It will turn the decals silver
Great Advice Thanks!

Don’t use the old oil and grease! Watch some featherweight videos by certified repairmen.

Get new grease and oil they do get old Keep the oil container for and grease for vintage display if you like.display
301 is better!
Don't buy modern grease. There is grease formulated for old machines.
I'd buy new lubricants. I hope you can get the smell out.
Don’t use that old singer oil! Or the grease! It breaks down and will be bad for the machine.
Buy some new sewing machine and grease!
