Found your video while searching for recovering a carrying case for a portable vintage sewing machine. The case is basically a wood box with a hinged lid with a handle on top. It’s covered inside and out with 75 year old tolex and needs to be redone. Your video will help a lot with me accomplishing my restoration process. Thank you.
I followed these instructions almost to exactly and got flawless results on my 2x12. Some advice... 1. Use paper to practice the corners many times. I did this and felt absolutely confident when it came time to tolex. I even learned a better way to do the corners than what is show. In the video by practicing. The corners are seamless. 2. Definitely buy more adhesive than you think you'll need. I ran out of the Keyston adhesive used in this video half way and ended up using 3M Super 90 for the rest. The Keyston adhesive was much easier to work with. Although the Super 90 created a strong bond, areas where the adhesive was applied heavily tended to form bubbles that did not allow oxygen in. As a result, quarter-sized bubbles appeared under my tolex because the adhesive couldn't tack-up. If you do use Super 90, you can prevent this by bursting these bubbles after it is sprayed on (run your finger over the adhesive). It is messy. 3. Do not leave a significant excess of tolex for the width/sides. I did this and it made working the tolex very difficult mid way through the process. This became a significant problem when doing the seam. To avoid this, use tape and wrap it around the width of the box you are wrapping. Use the tape to know approximately the width you need to cut the tolex.
I came over looking for a "how to" with reference to wrapping with Tolex and I ran up on this one. Just exactly what the doctor ordered. I am so thankful for you doing this video, now I can do (or I think I can) wrap my boxes like a pro. Thanks again. GP
thanks a lot - I'm wrapping my first 2x12 guitar cabinet right now using your method and it's working well so far... 🙂 it went really well and I went on to build an entire new 1x15" guitar cabinet using your methods. jan '22, back to relearn how to do the corners for my second Corona-project 1x15" cabinet for a full stereo setup with matching cabs 😀
I've made a few guitar cabinets at home and always come back to this video to refresh my memory when I do them. Absolutely perfect video and you can tell you really care 😁
I have collected some rack units and no case! Looking like crazy for a cheap solution i found an old night stand i disassembled and reinforced. This video showed me how to go from a night stand a vynel rack case. Thank you for saving me time and money
MedicSound, It's a sample case used for trade shows. It is made with various ABS colors along with an assortment of some of the different latches, handles, corners and aluminum that Reliable Hardware manufactures.
Tip - This may sound silly but get a roll of masking tape and a large sheet of paper. Holiday wrapping works great. Wrap your case as though it were a present. Experiment with several sheets and your cuts and seams will become evident - probably not on your first try but you'll get there. Thanks for your question - hope this helps.
Hey Andy, Great video! I customize EVERYTHING. So this is very helpful. Dry mounting is the BEST way to go with Tolex. (I did not realize this until I watched this video). The heat gun is something that seems obvious, but I didn't use it the last time I customized my cab, nor did I top cut the seem. (seems,... I didn't have enough Tolex to properly cover my Marshall head. Had to piece it together,.. What a mess),.... Long/short of it, I'm redoing the Tolex on my cab and head and it will look sweet this time. Thanks! Wine Taurus cab and Head with LED lighting in the speaker chambers and the head,... The head has a piece of acrylic in place of the Marshall logo cover, and the back has a hinged trap door to access the inside of the head to change tubes.
Fantastic tutorial! I'm about to embark on restoring a Rhodes Mark I Suitcase, and I'd like to do something different - like a chocolate brown tolex. I think the black and brown would be cool. This tutorial has helped tremendously!
Dude great video. One suggestion - the easiest way to cut the join so it meets and is straight is to glue an overlap then run your exacto through both layers then pull away the excess.
I would like to see a video demonstrating who to apply Tolex to a cabinet which requires the use of two standard sized rolls. I recently covered a bass cab that was larger than one single roll of Tolex. I could have used some help on where to put the seam when the piece is too short to make it back to the bottom.
Good and helpful video. Using spray adhesive is good on large surfaces but for the smaller areas (for example at 13minute in this video) to avoid overspray it's good to have some brushable adhesive (I use Pattex Palmatex).
Very, very, VERY nice work. You are an artist. I have recovered amps and cases and you sure do make it look easy. One suggestion if I may, I use good old fashioned wax paper with painters tape to keep overspray problems in check. You can get a roll of it at the grocery store for next to nothing. I use the trick not with just adhesive but spraying furniture, crafts, etc. An old high school wood shop trick! I'm you're newest subscriber and really look forward to watching the rest of your videos.
you guys are amazing thank you so much for all the information that is so hard to find on the internet by googling what half the supplies are actually called
Oh, wow! I feel a lot better about how I was planning to do it. I figured I would have to dovetail it and use 3/4" to make it sturdy enough for 25lbs of gear. I'm trying to keep down the weight, so I'll go with 1/2" and just glue and screw. Thanks!
Great video but using contact cement that seam will split after a while. Its extra work but if you need that seam to last you have to use Elmers or Titebond on just that area. I leave an inch or two inches unglued(with contact cement) and then finish with Titebond. Of course you need to move the seam inboard a bit to do this.
Best Part is that I was just looking into cabs myself. Do you think that you guys could come up with a road case/stage box for people to stand on and store stuff in?
Fantastic Job and fantastic video very clear explanation..I'm doing a job like this fir the very first time for my brother's Marshall head ..and your video will be absolutely the guide for me ..it's very necessary for me to see a real MASTER at work..my congratulation ..I will try to di my best..hopin' just to come enough close to yours (it will be hard for me.)
12:40 "If you happen to get some of the adhesive on the tolex don't worry, you can get it off with adhesive remover".. That is correct IF you are using black or solid color tolex. But, if your doing a printed tolex such as Python faux snake skin, you do got to be careful not to get any of the adhesive on the portion of the tolex that shows. I know this because I did a head box with white Python, and using any kind of adhesive remover will remove the snake skin or any printed patterns. Luckily for me it wasn't much, and on the bottom side so it didn't end up showing much. But I'm about to do another head with the same tolex and I"m going to cover it up with painters tape and or some cardboard then spray, and then remove the tape. I used 3M 90 hi-temp spray adhesive (Lowe's) and I'm pretty sure it's the same stuff used in this vid, it works great and because it is high temp, it isn't going to come loose. Just keep in mind that once the two surfaces touch, you can NOT pull it back to reposition. Do NOT use acetone to remove any overspray, as it will melt tolex or any plastics. I found that Naphtha or Coleman's camp fuel (refined kerosene) worked fine.
Applying an adhesive on a cabinet that has been stained with oil or wax probably won't work very well. Oil or wax on the wood won't let the adhesive penetrate and bond properly. That said, if you still want to attempt covering with Tolex, you should sand, clean and test a small area on the bottom of the unit. If you find your method yields a good bond then proceed. Hope this helps -
Hello ! Sorry my english is not so good. I'm not sure that I have inderstand why you use the heatgun for the corners.. For a nice work ? A better look ? Thank for tour return
very good video! thanks! i already built an amp and stained it. i think i may tolex it to make it more gig-friendly. will the adhesive be ok over the stain? it's just the minwax stuff from the store.
I forgot to say that your video is really good and helps a lot, thanks for all the explaination, it is helpful and needed. But why does the "J" Roller have to cost so much for such a tiny and quite necessary tool?
Hey Andy -- I'd like to see more about the wood working portion of this box; how did you create a four sided wood box that doesn't turn into a parallelogram (when the top slides to the side)?
+Mitch Miller Hi Mitch. Use glue, screws and add small blocks of wood to the inside corners. Secure with corner clamps and allow to dry for 24 hours. Hope this helps.
Nice video. With my first speaker cab build I did not have a heat gun... if anyone is planning on using tolex, BUY A HEAT GUN!! Andy got it right with how much it helps
It can certainly be done but removing old tolex and adhesive is labor intensive and requires patience. You'll need to sand it completely smooth. It's a project.

Hi, I am in the process of perplexing an old Fender Blackface Bandmaster 2x12 cab. My problem is that when I pulled off the old black Rolex, it left all of the black parts of the Rolex and old glue stuck to the cab. How do I remove this? Should I just use a sander with 50 grit paper or should I try something like acetone or something like that? Will acetone harm the pine? Could use your professional advice. Thanks from Michael Newell from Niagara Falls,Ontario, Canada
Sanding is always the best option for a classic. You can also search UA-cam for "how to remove tolex covering". Select "How To DIY Recover / Tolex a Guitar Amp Cabinet Complete Guide w...". Fast forward to about 2 minutes. Sometimes a heat gun can speed the process. If you use a heat gun let the cabinet cool completely prior to sanding.

So, you cut each corner separately? When i do that, they do not line up exactly. It only works with corner covers. If i cut 2 layers at once, then they line up perfect.

Not a good idea. a hair dryer won't get hot enough. Best to use a heat gun. Here's a cheap one www.amazon.com/Genesis-GHG1500A-Temperature-Nozzle-Attachments/dp/B00EU2T8GG/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=heat+gun&qid=1576371272&sr=8-4
The good things about MDF is that it is cheap and it is good for speaker cabs when you want to use a material that does not have much impact on the sound. The bad thing that it is heavy. Plywood is better because it is strong enough and it is not so heavy. I have constructed a tube-amp housing of 18mm birch plywood but probably 16mm would have been enough. You could use pine as well, it has much lighter weight and it is also strong enough when it's constructed oproperly.
11 years later, this is still the best instructional video on UA-cam on how wrap with Tolex.
Was just thinking that. Absolute quality!
yup.....
It's one of the best instructional videos of any hands-on subject, in my opinion.
There is absolutely no substitute for a trained professional. This is by far one of the best how to videos of all time!
8 years later and still the best tutorial for this.. thank you very much.. August 2020!!
All instructors could learn a thing or two from you and your wonderful presentation.

Great work, where do you get the adhesive?
Hi, I am in the process of perplexing an old Fender Blackface Bandmaster 2x12 cab. My problem is that when I pulled off the old black Rolex, it left all of the black parts of the Rolex and old glue stuck to the cab. How do I remove this? around how many cans of high temp adhesive would suffice if I were to tolex an amp head and a 212 cab?
So, you cut each corner separately? When i do that, they do not line up exactly. It only works with corner covers. If i cut 2 layers at once, then they line up perfect.

What type of plywood was used to make the case?
Probably 3/4" birch
Can you use a hand held hair dryer blower instead of heat gun?
Not a good idea. a hair dryer won't get hot enough. Best to use a heat gun. Here's a cheap one www.amazon.com/Genesis-GHG1500A-Temperature-Nozzle-Attachments/dp/B00EU2T8GG/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=heat+gun&qid=1576371272&sr=8-4
Great video, thanks for all your help!
Hey Andy,
What type of wood do you use when building the amp rack with Tolex? Particle board? MDF Board? Cheap plywood?
Most amp cabs are made from this "cheap plywood" you speak of.
Fantastic,,,,,,,thank you very much,,,,,mitres are no longer a mystery.
