  • Our Off Grid Redwood Deck Gets Stairs!
    In this video we get started with stairs for our rear deck on our #strawbalehouse.
    First step is to locate and pour a slab on which the stair stringers will sit. Then we get on with the stringers.
    Our video ends aburtly because of a collection of circumstances including a hernia, necessary trips out of town, a broken hot water heater which caused a wet mess in our trailer and last but not least, a dental emergency.
    It's no fun when your dreams are put on the back burner because life gets in the way.

    Bill seems like life works like that. Life's storms coming all at once. Very sorry to hear about the health issues. As a mature fellow myself I can relate to us needing to take care of the mature physique. Hope everything works out and things improve all the way around.

      Thanks Don. I've always had a very high tolerance for pain. Even as a kid my Dad called me a stoic. But this hernia, when it reared it's ugly head was ( and still is, but not as often) crazy painful. The perverbial "red hot poker".....searing pain. Best part....the first available appointment with my Dr. isn't until 12/3. Ibuprofen will be my best friend. Your pond is really awesome Don. Very inspirational.

      @@theupsideofdownsizing Hope you will go real careful Bill and take whatever you need to deal with the pain. Heartfelt thanks for the kind comments about the pond. Favorite build by far for me here. Said of course from someone who has a long way to go to catch up to you as far as building stuff.

    Javelinas don't care about much. One or two of them by themselves are pretty tame. Once the group up they can be a bit of a handful.

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  2 роки тому +1

      Right. Yvonne, while walking our old dog, a Brazilian Mastiff, was backed up to a house by a herd of about 15 Javalinas. Especially agressive if their babies are involved. This one Javalina did square off and stomped a front hoof at Chloe. That's when I scared it off with a warning shot from my pistol.

    Your Javelina was bristled up. Yep, he knew you were there. Their eyesight is not so great but can detect scent and hear extremely well. From the looks of it, you've got a buddy. BTW, was nice running into you at our local ACE. Peace!

    Glad to hear you are feeling better, but sad to hear it needs to be operated on. =(
    One thing I noticed when watching the time laps of you making the quikrete. The scoop on the tractor was dropping way more then I expected. It might be al is as it should. But it might be worth checking out in case you might have some small leakage that is causing it to drop like that.
    Have a great week!

    That first step off the porch will be 10"+3.75"? That first step is going to be a doozy... Twice the height of rise as the other steps...

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  2 роки тому

      Your math is incorrect. The first step is 9.5 ( height of the skirt) MINUS 1.5" ( thickness of the 2x tread) = 8". You were confusing the rise with the run. I was probably unclear in my explanation.

    Try a small squirt of dish soap in the water when mixing concrete, makes it slide out of the mixer better and also uses less water for a stronger mix 👍
    Rest up with that hernia, you got all the time in the world to get things done. Have a few videos in the bag as a reserve so no pressure to get one done if things happen. ✌☮

    Your 1st step off the porch will be a lot more the 6 1/4". Will that feel different as you step down or climb up? You can see the brown porch board is way longer than the rise of the other steps. Just curious.

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  2 роки тому

      First step will be 8 inches. Width of the skirt is nine and a half inches. Height or thickness of tread is one and a half equals 8 in step
