Hope you will continue to be super careful with your medical issue Bill. That deck looks super sharp. I would have had a ton of challenges wrapping my head around that hot water heater system. Way to go in persisting and getting all of this done.
Thanks Don. I must admit it was an intimidating project, but, I shifted into "old man mode", slowed myself way down and just ate the elephant....one bite at a time.
Seems like things are getting worse. My local gas station was out of everything but premium. Many of the shelves in the grocery stores are empty. Prices are rising exponentially. Yet, production and quality are falling precipitously. It is a huge sign of poor leadership in DC.

Man those steps look great. I think they look very professional. The tape product for the saw is a good find. I will be sharing that info with my hubby. Our water here in AZ is definitely hard and seeing your pipes confirms that. The water filter is a good idea. We have installed them in our shower for the first time this year and it has made a big difference. Take care of yourself. Hi to Yvonne.
Back in Savannah we had an inline water filter in our shower and the difference it made was amazing. Back there the water wasn't really hard, just nasty with way too much chlorine.
Hello my husband and I are planning on moving to Arizona in 3 months and giving ourselves a year to find the perfect property in Cochise county . We watched all your videos and planned to do exactly what you and your wife did . Been watching all your build videos and enjoyed and also learning a lot. I have a question if you don’t mind answering, how many inspections did you have to go through? And was it difficult?

In Cochise county Arizona, there is what is called an Owner Builder Opt Out. Basically you pay for a building permit and you also need to have a septic system which will be inspected. Once the building is structurally standing and "dried in", you can have it signed off on by the county. The will look to see that it has the proper set backs from the property lines and any active washes, that it is the size you said it would be in terms of square footage, and they want to see what type of outdoor lighting you have ( looking to prevent excessive light pollution in the night sky) That's it. They do not go inside the house at all.
A real coincidence that this question gets asked today because it was today that the County officially signed off on our build. The "inspector" was here for about 5 minutes and didn't even come in past the gate. We are good to go!!!

Free using a tankless water heater in the house. This was just to replace the existing tank. Once the house is done we're selling the trailer anyway.

Hello, I have been watching your videos and love them. I have a property in New Mexico I bought several years ago but have decided to sell the 10 acres because the association will not allow me to build the type of house I wanted to build. I have looked into dome building, earthships, earthbags and now straw bale. I am leaning towards a straw bale house. Was wondering what part of Arizona you are in? Watching older videos. Gate hinges should be installed with the bottom hinge L facing up and the top one facing down. Otherwise someone can simply lift the gate off its hinges and toss it out of the way to gain access to your property.

When I was an RVer I flushed my water tank
every 4 to 6 weeks. Especially in the southwest.
I was amazed how much deposit was there each
time.

We're ok. I had a hernia surgery last Friday and am slowly recovering. My health has been the victim of this marathon build. I wish we had started 10 years ago. But, in 10 days, the work will continue because this house is not going to build itself.
@@theupsideofdownsizing, Appreciate the update, and none of us are getting any younger. Both of you look after yourselves, and i hope your recovery is speedy.
Will be excited to see you back, but although the house will not build itself, make sure you are fully recovered, because hernia surgery is not guaranteed to be the end of a hernia. And we want you to be able to do what you want to do.

Did you finish the house.
Glycine (an amino acid) may help with hernia recovery. So many people are getting hernias because glyphosate in foods substitutes for glycine in connective tissues (fascia, tendons etc) causing abnormal and weak proteins.
Abundant REAL glycine in diet can help prevent and correct this.
So, without making me do the research, what foods are you recommending that are high in glycine? Sounds interesting.
@@theupsideofdownsizing Gelatin and collagen are mostly glycine. Bone broth and rich stocks are good too. The trick is to get high quality pastured organic sources, as otherwise its likely glyphosate contaminated and could make problems worse!
Zint brand gelatin seems pretty good so far.
I also just buy it as a pure bulk supplement on Amazon by the kilo. It is sweet-tasting and nice in coffee.

Hi Bill and Yvonne, I am relatively new to your channel. I heard about you and found your site and rather than viewing your most recent ones, I went back to the beginning when you first arrived at the property with your trailer. I am awed by your meticulous work and attention to detail. I love the results of your efforts (both of you). I watched your disaster unfold, your response and positive efforts to move forward and complete your dream. It is tough but it looks satisfying. Bill it must be very frustrating to you to have a physical issue that is not only painful but doesn’t allow you to continue until you are better. But better to heal properly than to do more damage. Love your channel, and I hope you are both well.

Wouldn't a tankless heater installed on outside work...for a lot less $ and effort? Even a camping model.
EzTankless units have worked really well for me and are affordable. Just flush system with vinegar once a year using sump pump if you have hard water.
I bought an EZ tankless for the house. The cheapest way to go was this tank. Once the house is done we're selling the trailer anyway.

Thanks. I was in my doctor's office yesterday. Looks like a2 month wait for the surgery date. Not in daily pain, but as you know it slows you down a bit.

Thanks for watching! Many people have had a similar request regarding total cost. Fact of the matter is, I have no idea what we've spent. I can tell you we are doing this project on a very tight budget and hope to have the entire project completed for less than 75k USD. But I've never been a bookkeeper and am notorious for NOT keeping receipts.

Save that old tank to use as an air pig. For those times you need compressed air but your compressor or extension cord won't reach.

What is the chance you could seal a gas leak in that tank? An outside concave seal for long term reliability?

Hi there. We have moved into our house and are doing well. The UA-cam channel just never really got traction the way we were hoping so we concentrated our energy on getting the house completed. And with the exception of the final exterior plaster coat, the house is done. Thanks for inquiring about us.

Just trying to get my health issues resolved. Sitting in a doctors office as I write this. Hernia slowing me down a bit. Only been able to finish the deck, build the front steps and cover my workshop tent with metal roofing panels.

I have had fitful dreams about you two and perhaps, even if you've lost interest in doing videos for us, you might do one to explain the reasons. You have no obligation to do them, but you do have almost 9K followers that are in the dark, and some of us care about you.
Thanks for your concern and comments.We are both doing ok. I finally had my surgery last Friday, and am slowly gaining mobility again, though it'll be another 10 days before any kind of work can continue. The videos, which began as a way to keep our families informed, turned into something that I really liked doing, and then into more work than I had anticipated. I was always a bit torn because I always wanted to produce a good video, but simply got burned out by the amount of work and time involved in doing so.
