    I think that this is a great point. I think that throughout the Harry potter series there is a lack of character building and personal stakes etc. In my opinion, the only characters that had ample depth were Hermione, Snape, and Draco. They had very specific skills and very clear reasons for their actions. Ron and Harry on the other hand, had no real skills (lets be honest, both of them just end up getting saved by others or somehow get lucky enough to survive).
    I also think that the fact that Harry didn't have to work hard to get to his "skill" level is an important differentiator. Percy was a troubled kid who had to struggle to find friends and fit in with others. He had specific skills that made sense for him to have (water powers and sword fighting). However, Harry just happened to be good at defense against dark arts (and by the end of the series, everyone was good at it too.)
    And while I'm at it, I'll address another point. Harry wasn't a nice person. Time and time again he proves himself to be arrogant and entitled. The book talks about his father being arrogant and I think it draws a very clear parallel to harry. He regularly victimized himself and made life hell for the other characters. Percy on the other hand was a friendly character who was funny and relatable. His defining trait was loyalty (something that harry and ron lacked). It made Percy a realistic protagonist who you can sympathize for.
    sorry for the rant but I feel like we don't address it often enough. Great video though. I grew up with both series and I do love them both, but harry potter didn't hit the same way Percy Jackson did.

      I totally agree with all of the points you made. Like you said, I love both series, but Harry was grating a lot of the time and I ended up liking some of the side characters way more. And don't apologize for the rant! I love reading long comments (even if it takes me a while to respond to them lol). I think looking back, a lot of Harry Potter reads as revolutionary for its time but not fully-developed or thought-out intentionally the way that Percy Jackson is.

      I actually dislike Harry as a character because everything is thrown at him and it doesn't feel earned. The sole reason why he was good at DADA earlier than others his age was because the Dementors were at Hogwarts to protect HIM from Sirius Black and of course they came to like feeding off of Harry's traumas. Harry HAD to learn how to protect himself from them, no other student had this issue. Then 2 years later thanks to Harry's DA meetings, like you said, everyone becomes pretty good at DADA, even Neville! Harry is able to resist the Cruciatus Curse because Barty Crouch Jr. disguised himself as Mad Eye SPECIFICALLY to get to Harry had a lesson on the 3 Unforgivable Curses and then practiced on all the students. Harry was also said to be a strong flyer but there were others that were better than him like Victor Krum. He got his flying talents from his father so that's not unique to Harry or earned. Everything Harry is good at is because of his situation as The Boy Who Lived. Once Voldemort was resurrected more Death Eaters tried getting at him so he had to learn how to protect himself. He had to learn how to become a leader. Because of all the Dark Magic attacking him he learned about that and got proficient at casting some jinxes, hexes, and curses.
      Percy had to learn how to use his extremely powerful demigod powers, but every time he used them he would get weak and I think he fainted after using them a few times. This held up throughout the whole series except he got more stamina using his powers. He started out as a horrible sword fighter but with help from Annabeth he became really good. He wasn't the smartest or the strongest but he had to work and learn to be good at both.
      Harry & Percy have the same fatal flaw, they will do anything for family and friends. The difference here is Hermione & Ron don't convince Harry out of things while Annabeth & Grover do. Percy KNOWS Annabeth is smarter than him so he trusts her way more than Harry trusts Hermione. Percy is also a little less clueless about the Greek mythological world than Harry is to the magical world. I get that both characters represent the reader so we get explanations on things so we can understand them, but over the series Percy gets more knowledgable while Harry DOES NOT!! So frustrating!

      um these are good points but i do disagree on that ending bit. first of all, harry has never seemed arrogant to me at least, i think he’s actually a bit more self doubting but maybe i forgot something. secondly, he is extremely loyal to the point where the other side starts to use it against him. finally, when has he ever made other characters miserable? maybe i’m missing something but i seriously can’t think of anything unless it’s a bully like draco or dudley who deserves it. as for the rest of your points i agree but i still love the series!! have a great day!

    • @raef6989
      @raef6989 4 роки тому +24

      Sharon R. I agree that it might be a bit far to call Harry arrogant but while Dudley was completely awful to him and did kind of deserve it isn’t it Harry’s job as the protagonist to be better? And with the Draco thing, did Draco really deserve it as much as it makes him seem? Draco was a prick and did some things to make Harry justifiably angry, but by 6th year Harry was OBSESSED with Draco, he had no reason to be, he really didn’t have any proof that he was doing anything and was even spying on him on the train kind of just because he’s a “villain” that always really off put me, and Hermione and Ron were like “mate this is a bit far” but Harry could not stop accusing Draco of things he had no right to accuse him of, like the Katie Bell thing and watching him on the Marauders Map, it was down right CREEPY, yeah he was right that he was plotting something but Draco could just have been being his prick self and not plotting anything and Harry wouldn’t have cared he was so convinced without any evidence. I kinda think that goes for making people miserable and we also see that Draco is already miserable with what he has to do because he’s hecking crying to myrtle in the bathroom and then Harry fights him??? I’m not a big Draco fan by any means but I always thought that Harry was completely out of place and wrong to do that.

      I agree and relate to your experience. I actually never even finished HP because I started reading it to early (my mom read it to me when I was in like 3rd or 2nd grade) or I never caught on to the story or got attached like I did to Percy. When I first read HP I actually wanted to read it and wasn’t able to hold on, when I first read PJO I didn’t actually want to read it in the first place but got so attached and even 5 years later (and like 10 rereads) I still adore it and the characters. Another thing that draws me more to the stories is I know the universe is still expanding even through Rick Riordan finished his last series in the Riordanverse. We are getting a Disney + show and a new solangelo book (not to mention the KC Netflix adaptation).

    I think you can really see the differences with how people look at the stories after reading them.
    For example, with Harry Potter everyone asks about the world building (are there other wizard schools, what kind of jobs do people have, how do things work etc.) which shows how invested people are in the world.
    On the other hand, with Percy Jackson, everyone asks about the characters (what happens to them now, do new kids at camp learn about Hercules, Odysseus and Percy? Etc.) which shows how invested people are in the characters.

    As a person with dyslexia and ADHD once I learned how to read (which took going to a special school for two years) at the end of 3rd grade I really wanted to read Percy Jackson because I felt I could relate and I ended up loving the series and it got me sucked into reading books and on the other hand I actually hated Harry Potter for a long time (I don’t any more) but there was parts where I just didn’t care for it and stuff and Percy Jackson never made me feel like that. I think at the end of the day Percy Jackson will continue to be my favorite children book, not to mention Percy Jackson has side characters of color and LGBTQ+ characters and more. And Percy Jackson was easier to read as a child and funnier.

    I actually think this is a great point. I was never really attached to the main 3 protagonists in Harry Potter, especially in the first book, and I kind of felt defective because I couldn’t for the life of me understand why they were doing what they were doing and often stopped the book to ask why. I love Harry Potter don’t get me wrong! I think the world is amazing and I loved reading it. But I never latched onto to main characters like I do with other books. In Percy Jackson there was never that question of why, I knew why or I learned why, which made them a lot easier for me to read and gave me less questions and made me feel more attached to the characters.

    I really love Percy Jackson's writing style. I am a potterhead too but if you notice carefully, reading Percy Jackson is more interesting and entertaining... Harry Potter's writing style is more complex and formal while Percy Jackson is sarcastic and informal. Like, Percy is literally about to die but he keeps making sarcastic comments. AHH THIS IS WHAT I ALWAYS SAY !! *THIS* is why Percy Jackson will always be extra special for me. The characters were so real, relatable, and lovable - you really, truly cared about them. I read both as a kid and all these years later, I'm still a PJO girl at heart because the characters made such an imprint on me. They had issues I had (like ADHD), they had low self-esteem that they worked on with the help of friends, they each had their own story, their deep desires, their fears. With Harry Potter it was the world I fell in love with, not so much the characters. With Percy Jackson the world was cool asf, but I actually felt like I could be friends with them-Percy was an amazing protagonist who makes mistakes, is self-deprecating, makes silly jokes, is kind and loyal [to a fault, even] which overall makes him SO likeable, you just want to join the books and be friends with him. Characters have always been the most important part of a story for me, so HP never quite hit as hard as amazing as the world was.

  • @aashibhimjiyani6094
    @aashibhimjiyani6094 4 роки тому +38

    Well I have read both of them and when I first read Harry Potter I found myself wanting to read it again but could read only till the 4th part as after that there is continuous darkness in the whole series and sometimes it is baseless and to come to think of there deaths did not even affect that much. When Dumbledore died ( sorry for the spoiler) I just got relieved somehow because I had started think of him as the one who was spoiling them. Somehow all the deaths in Hp didn't affect us or somehow just made it darker and boring. In Percy Jackson every single person has been giving a personal life from which they have build up there character. It can be Percy Jackson or Clarisse. Nor do the deaths in the series become meaningless. Every person who died in PJO and HOO has made me cry. From Bob and Damasen to Charles Beckendrof and Silena. All of them somehow support Percy and make the story lighter and more relatable.
    Although Harry was my first favourite book character Percy Jackson won in the competition.

    Harry Potter & the Philosopher Stone: Harry wants to stop SNAPE. He doesn't realize it's Quirrell until the very end when they are in the final chamber where the Mirror of Erised was. Throughout the whole book Quirrell doesn't confront Harry in person until the very end, he tries to kill him behind the scenes. Voldemort is NOT a threat in this book. This "quest" is not a quest at all, because no one chooses Harry to retrieve the Stone and keep it away from Snape (Quirrell). Harry & Co takes it upon themselves to get the Stone.
    Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief: Another gigantic reason why Percy goes on this quest and not other demigods is HIS FATHER IS POSEIDON! Also Hades appears in Camp Half-Blood and calls Percy out. So in order to stop a war between his Dad and his Uncle Percy is going on this quest to clear his name AND get his Mom back from Hades. Annabeth forces Percy to take her with him and Grover is Percy's protector so he feels like he has to go so he can protect Percy. I believe Grover also used the excuse of looking for Pan.

    PJO is great but I think I’ll always like HP more, a big chunk would probably be because it was my first love and holds a lot of nostalgia and memories for me since I read it as a kid ( there’s also the fact it’s a super big pop culture icon and has iconic movies and a whole amusement park which subconsciously hypes you up in general) but I always felt more immersed in the world, it felt more whimsical and the story just spoke to me a lot more.
    PJO I unfortunately ended up reading way later during college ( I think if I read it earlier I would have a lot more emotional attachment and regret I didn’t but oh well I’m glad I read it now)
    I think there’s also the layer of PJO being more of a kids book compared to HP, both series are aimed at kids and get darker as they go on but PJO maintains that humour and childish whimsy throughout while HP kinda matured with its audience ( so at that point it kinda boils down to your preference)
    Also, as a 20 something reading PJO for the first time , some of the writing and the execution felt a little too quick paced and some of the scenes felt very “monster of the week” sometimes it felt like things were happening one after the other rather than flowing together naturally or having time to settle on emotional parts but I don’t think it’s really an objective flaw, I’m just looking at it through the eyes of an adult with a writers perspective rather than a kid lol

    • @christophermorgan9199
      @christophermorgan9199 Рік тому

      Honestly if Percy Jackson was written as long as Harry Potter books It would’ve been better. But it does not keep the childish stuff in the 4th and 5th book and heroes of Olympus. There’s not many humorous moments. It’s bits and pieces. But the monsters were just minor obstacles to the big picture so “monster of the week” doesn’t really matter.

    not to mention Harry got real lucky cause once you think about what Dumbledore said about how only someone who wants to find the stone but doesn't want to use it can find it mean if harry never went to stop Quirrell Quirrell would have still be looking for the stone for years and if he had just used the killing curse Voldermort would have had the stone and nothing could have stopped him

    • @cringeygachakidthatalsodoe7154
      @cringeygachakidthatalsodoe7154 3 роки тому +1

      Since's Harry's a Horcrux if Quirrel had used the killling curse voldemort would also die, when Voldemort tried to kill Harry in the forest, he dint realize that he was killing his own horcrux and in return would affect his soul. On the other hand, Harry did not defend himself. But he had the deathly hallows with him - the magic wand, the resurrection stone and the invisibility cloak. Remember, the owner of the deathly hallows is said to be the master of death. The true master accepts that the death is inevitable and there are worse things than death[1], which Harry did. He did not defend himself which showed that he was not scared of his death. He was worried about the people he cared about.
      Being the true master of death, it was his choice to decide whether he wants to accept death or not. He had unanswered questions which only Dumbledore can answer. So we can say that, he might have used his resurrection stone to resurrect Dumbledore from death and then we know what happened at the King's Cross. Dumbledore and Harry discussed what options he had - either go back or move on by catching the train [2]. And that shows that it was Harry's choice in the end. And he chose to come back and finish it for the good. In other words, Harry mastered the three hallows and acceptance of inevitability, which no other wizard was able to do. Dumbledore came close to mastering all three hallows but not at the same time. Only Ignotus Peverell mastered a deathly hallow and acceptance of inevitability. Harry didn't even know about the Deathly Hallows when he was 11.

    I agree. great point right here. There are a lot of reasons I prefer Percy Jackson and the Olympians to Harry Potter but I think my main focus here are the friendships. Percy is a natural character that I think a lot of people can relate to and if it's not him, then it's maybe Annabeth or Grover or someone. Rick Riordan crafted even the side characters perfectly. They were all essential to Percy's character growth. Come to Harry Potter, I don't hate the book, trust me, it's one of my favorites. But I honestly didn't feel like I could relate to Harry at some point. I mean, we all love our friends right? We would do anything for them right? And if someone hurt them, we would go LOCO on then and make them pay right? I didn't feel that in Harry Potter. Time and Time again we see Harry treating his friends sort of poorly. I recall in the Order of the Phoenix when I think I witnessed Harry's most annoying side. Do I even need to count the number of times he yelled at Hermione and Ron? He victimized himself a lot in this book and it just put me off because I honestly did not see a valid reason for him to feel entitled and victimized and super angry at everyone. I personally didn't feel the undying friendship of "The Golden Trio" as everyone calls them compared to "The Original Trio" in Percy Jackson. Percy's friendship with Annabeth and Grover.... *sigh* I feel heartbroken that I even need to explain this. Throughout the series, we feel the wonderful friendship with Annabeth, Grover and Percy. We feel how important these characters are to Percy. And just like I said earlier, all the side characters in PJO were really essential which I feel we didn't get in HP because the side characters there were just..... Side characters. I mean, compare the roles that Charles Beckendorf or Silena or Clarisse played in PJO to those of Dean and Seamus and Lavender... I think you can see the difference.
    Sorry for ranting, I just get carried away a lot.

    You also forgot that no one in the camp knew about the lightning blot getting stolen and the upcoming war even Annabeth was also a little clueless. Plus Annabeth and Grover were the only campers who were good to him. Percy had to choose who goes on the quest and Percy was default as he had to prove his innocence (and save his mother). Grover was coming as a best friend and protector reasons and Annabeth literally asked him so he just said yes. So that is just a motive enough I think.

    i'm a bit late but i agree with everything you said. and, just to put it simple, my favorite character in hp isn't one of the 3 protagonists, it's snape; in the other end percy is my favorite pj character. this proves in a simple way how i feel about these series. So, here's the thing for me. I'm a Harry Potter over Percy Jackson person. Why? I'm not entirely sure. They should fall under the same level of nostalgia for me, because I read them for the first time literally one right after the other. I remember loving them both, along with the third series that I read in that same time frame (more on that in a sec). All three were fantasy series focusing on a teenage boy learning to use his powers and form friendships in a completely new situation. However, while the plot of HP stuck in my mind like superglue, PJO just... didn't. If you were to ask me about plot elements of HP 5 years later, I could still prattle on and on about them, but with PJO I just forgot almost everything. I even forgot so much that I eventually decided to reread them about 2 years ago (read them the first time about 10 years ago for reference). And I still really enjoyed them. But now, another 2 years later, the memory is fading fast again.
    So, disclaimer, there is a little lot of unfairness there, because I also love the HP movies, and I watch them often, which is very much a plot refresher. Therefore, I decided to try comparing PJO instead to a fairer opponent. The third series I mentioned earlier. The Inheritance Cycle, better known as Eragon. Now, I haven't reread Eragon since the first time 10 years ago, and the only movie it has is a disaster of a film that is objectively worse than the PJO one (fight me). And, though slightly muddled, I remember so much of the series clear as day. I actually remember a series I read 10 years ago as well as one I reread 2 years ago. That really sealed it for me. What is it about PJO that makes its story so ephemeral to me? I still can't seem to answer that. So many people provide such convincing arguments for why PJO is just better than HP and yet... It doesn't stick. Maybe it's simply a personal thing of my preference for high fantasy, but then, why did the Lunar Chronicles stick hard? The Hunger Games? The Outsiders? Even the Stung duology, flawed as it was, has stuck harder than PJO.
    I guess all that is to say that while people are constantly making amazing arguments for why PJO is superior to HP that I should wholeheartedly agree with, I find that for some reason I cannot come to the same conclusion. At any rate, that was a long-winded rant, and I don't know why I decided to make it. Maybe I'm just hoping that somebody has experienced the same effect and can better articulate why.
    And, as a final note, despite my first assertion, if someone were to randomly ask me "HP or PJO?" and I gave my most genuine response? Eragon.
    Because, boy, do I love me some beautiful Tolkien-esque fantasy with a side of incredible magic systems.

    ❗ALL OF THINGS ARE WRITTEN IN THIS COMMENT ARE MY OPINIONS AND ITS FROM MY POV. NO HATE FOR THE VIDEO, CONTENT CREATOR AND CHARACTERS/BOOKS. ❗
    In my P.O.V. The Golden Trio HAD REASONS to protect the stone. According to the prophecy, Harry was the only one who could defeat Voldemort, so Dumbledore wanted to prepare him for this. Because in the future, when Voldemort regained his power, they would have lost the war if Harry had not been prepared. After all, why would Dumbledore and other professors put up barriers that freshmen can get through? Ron, on the other hand, grew up with siblings who beat him at everything (except chess) and always wanted to prove himself (even seeing that he was better off than his siblings in Mirror of Erised, which was his greatest wish). And lastly Hermione wanted to prove that she could be a good witch even she was Muggle-born. Also, the Trio's friendships and loyalty to each other (and perhaps they all thought Snape would steal the stone) had held them together in this mission. It may seem trivial at first glance, but when the natures, personalities, experiences and backstories of the characters are taken into account, it turns out that these are bigger reasons.

    Honestly, what I like more about Percy Jackson is that the prophecies are hard true, no if’s, and’s, or but’s about them. Harry Potter’s prophecy doesn’t matter and serves no purpose other than to give a halfhearted reason for Harry to be on the frontline rather than use him as bait so 10 of the strongest witches and wizards can body Voldemort. I say halfhearted because the prophecy doesn’t even come true in the end. Voldemort loses cause he forgot a tiny piece of wand lore. He lose because of the lack of a fact on a topic that not even the experts fully understand. That was information, not power.
    The prophecies in all of Uncle Rick’s books mean something and have to happen, thus making them important. They are also vague to the end where, when they are revealed, make so much sense that you slap your forehead like “duh, how did I not get that?”
    Ultimately, Harry Potter would have been far better if the mysterious power Harry supposedly had was wandless magic. Throughout the entire series we here how important wands are, but Harry has also shown off purposeful wandless magic (bursting open the door to his stuff 3rd year, lighting his wand without touching it 5th year). It would have been so much cooler to have Harry stop using a wand and it would fit with a theme of overcoming laziness. Harry could have come into the world overworked and constantly on the lookout for his relatives and first learn just to be able to relax in a world that can do anything with a flick of a stick. As time goes on he becomes less and less lazy as he needs to survive the Tournament (1st-4th). With the return of Voldemort, Harry starts to train for his limits rather than the minimum. I’d expect around here for him to start teaching himself wandless magic given how close he was to getting his soul sucked. By the time the final fight would come around, he would have spent 3 years learning this magic in secrecy, so when the time comes he beats Voldemort in a duel, wand vs wandless
    (I got carried away didn’t I? Oops)

    One thing that bothers me a lot in Riordan's books is how unaffected the characters are by all the traumatizing stuff they go through. I get they are children books but after so many years and series the light tone just feels wrong to me. Just giving everyone a girlfriend/boyfriend doesn't make the story more mature. It's not a coincidence that Nico, Leo and Reyna are fan favourites, they are the only ones that show how mentally affected they are by everything. In this point I think Harry Potter does a better job, we actually feel how much the pressure gets to Harry.

      I think it has a lot to do that they are children. They’re stronger than you’d normally give them credit. I know by the end of blood of Olympus Percy & Annabeth should NOT be completely okay. Rick did give them a grey streak after lifting the sky but by the next book BOOM. They are a ok. The light tone can be a good change of pace. Also Leo and Percy together is the best comedic duo. Leo himself is just great. Ohhh Leo

      How can you even say their unaffected? Percy is mentally affected too, and just because he doesn't whine about it all the time doesn't mean he isn't affected. When Percy and Annabeth fell into the river Cocytus, Percy was ready to give up, as is Annabeth. This also shows when they approach the river Acheron, and Annabeth thinks all the deaths in PJO is her fault. Rick Riordan didn't give them a boyfriend/girlfriend to feel mature, he gave them a boyfriend/girlfriend so they have a reason to keep going, to live.

    I'm quite late to this video but I'm still gonna put my two cents. I agree with you 100% you made a lot of great points. I think the biggest problem (for me personally) with HP is that he's not really relatable like Percy is. Harry is adored by everyone in the Wizarding World and has a huge amount of people who are willing to die for him. He also has no specific talent other than he is good at catching the snitch. Don't get me wrong I love the world and the story is really good but I just don't feel connected to basically any of the characters. Where as Percy, he's a troubled kid who a bunch of people hate. He gets bullied and has ADHD and dyslexia and he has to learn how to get through his complicated life. His character is something so many kids can relate to. His lack of self confidence and doubt in if he's making the right decisions are also extremely relatable. I just think that HP is really good with the whole world and the story is also quite good, but it's hard to get connected. And PJ also has a pretty cool world with a good story and amazing characters.

      Yeah I definitely felt the "chosen one" treatment more in HP whereas in PJO, Percy wasn't even the one who stole the lightning bolt in the prophecy! PJO does a great job of balancing moral complexity without it feeling like a constant battle between black to white, the duality can simply exist in one person like how it does in real life. Exploring the individual struggles each characters had made them much more nuanced in a way as well e.g. Luke betrayal hit hard but I automatically understood why he did what he did and felt devastated by his ending and that's only because they framed his character in a way that was realistic rather than trope-ish/just for the sake of garnering sympathy.

    The fact that you have to preempt and repetitively say that you enjoyed the Harry Potter books proves that there is a toxic fanbase of Harry Potter readers. Of course all fanbases have the capacity to be toxic and overly enjoy something to the extreme of being offended because of someone else disliking it. Percy jackson has toxic fans but since we pale in comparison to the fanbase of Harry Potter (because of the movies but more on that later) we pale in comparison to their toxicity, as of course the more fans you have the higher the chances of having a rabid fanbase. It just feels weird that people can make the same video vice versa without the preemptive explanation of liking percy jackson and not get nearly the same hate as a percy jackson fan would get even with the warning. Honestly I dont think this would be an issue if the movies didnt suck and misrepresent what percy jackson is.

      While that is the case, agree with Hi I'm a Human that there wasn't necessarily enough time for them to form a friendship as close as the one depicted there. And nonetheless, I still appreciate knowing the characters as more than the part they played in friendships. I really liked getting to know Percy, Annabeth, and Grover outside of how they're defined by their friendships. I wish I'd gotten more of a chance to know Hermoine and Ron that way, before friendship defined them

      Well, that's a very good point. But unlike HP, PJO is more realistic. Harry just meets random people and suddenly they become his best friends. Percy, Annabeth, and Grover's friendship grows, just like it does in real life.

    Sorry...but I Disagree. I like both the series. I like hp more but I like pj too. I mean...I think pj totally deserves more but that doesn’t mean that we have to you know...put hate on hp.

    I find Percy Jackson to be a superior series to HP.
    Better romance, for starters. Harry's flicks with Cho and Ginny are ok, for the most part(him kissing Ginny in Halfblood Prince book is just cringe. completely out of place). And the scene in the film, where he and Ron comment on Hermione's skin(WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
    As for Percy Jackson, much better. The two start out as friends, and then there is some weird drama between them. The first kiss between them is in Book 3, and then it all goes down to the end of Book 5. It starts basically from 0, and gradually builds up to 100, making the whole thing quite rewarding and satisfying. It actually feels genuine.
    Fight scenes are also better in PJ. There is some plot armor, of course, but there really is the distinct feel of real danger. Always, there is something sinister. Percy's fight with Thalia in Book 3, I believe, is also very nice. Short and sweet. Really highlights the tension between Zeus and Poseidon. Then, the attack on Luke's ship at the beginning of book 5, and then the final battles. Point is, there is actually real danger involved. With HP, it's not as convincing.
    The story as a whole is far more enjoyable. There are little to no boring or slow moments.
    So, while I did enjoy reading HP, and found them quite interesting, PJ is just on a whole 'nother level.

    Voldemort was a threat to the whole wizard of world though, why wouldn’t Ron and hermione want to stop him from becoming immortal? Your reasoning doesn’t really make sense

      Its really hard to explain but Ill try. Character motivations need to be personal. It needs to come from within the character and it has to reflect their story, and the way they act in it.
      It has to be the decision(that is based on their beliefs) of the characters. If the plot decides it for them i.e. Ron and Hermiones motives is "Voldemort threatening the wizarding world so we have to stop them". Cause if that is all then there really isnt anything special to talk about Ron and Hermione. Cause if the whole wizarding world is threatened then why follow them in the story besides them being Harry's friends.
      Tl:dr Ron and Hermione are Plot Driven characters when good writing calls for Character Driven stories.

      Thats why Annabeth and Grover were "better"(for lack of better words) characters.
      Annabeth is a good character because she has/had feelings for Luke who is her enemy. And she is followed in the story because she feels that she is partially the reason for Lukes downfall under Kronos. She turned her back on Luke when he goes to her for help saying they can runaway together. Her character arc is better than Percy's imo.
      As for Grover(mostly about the first book) his desire is to become a searcher for Pan, like every other Satyr. But the reason hes a good character is that he is viewed as the weakest most afraid satyr. And he has to go on the quest in order to get what he wants. So when he ultimately becomes the one satyr to finally find Pan, it is deserved because despite his nervous personality his determination is what gets him to his goal.(He probably has the least developed motive, but still good).
      Annabeth and Grover have their own motives and their decisions not effect the plot but is personal to their stories.

      @@alekoo_ngdiak read the Harry Potter books, because you don’t know enough knowledge about Ron and Herminone to be having this discussion. To say their characters boil down to stopping Voldemort is insulting to them, they both have way more going on than that, and I’d argue way more than either Grover or Annabeth. You named one thing for each of them, I can name several character motivations for Ron and Herimone, each.
