now I want to use "the dialogue needs to sparkle" in a review
After watching the movie first, reading the book, and then watching the movie again... it really is the best way to describe the dialogue in the books, "It sparkles"
@@alucardthespy5539 same, but I didn't read them in order.
I saw someone in my primary school with Demigod Files, borrowed it, read it then loved it.
When you read the books from Titan's curse after watching the movies, you can just tell everything is wrong. You keep hearing about how Ares and Percy fought but you ask yourself when???

percy jackson producers: *ages characters to 17 against rick’s wishes*
harry potter producers: *apologizes profusely to j.k. rowling for making harry’s eyes blue instead of green*
Carly Vandersluys it wasn’t the producers fault eye colors weren’t accurate for Harry Potter and Voldemort. That’s why they felt so bad, it was the early 2000s, so doing CGI on the eyes would look scary. So they just did what was safer.
Michal Kate C. that doesn’t really change anything about my previous statement though lol. the producers of pj could’ve done what was safer by making the characters 12 instead of 17, but they didn’t, against ricks wishes. whereas in hp, the producers didn’t even have a choice and they still apologized profusely.

Raven The Bird and if she was a teenager..
Don’t ya know, tv producers think that naturally curly hair is ugly and gross so how could the main love interest have it
I hate how in the movies Annabeth is stupid. Like, the first scene she goes up to Percy and is like “I’m better than you” and FIVE MINUTES LATER he beats her in capture the flag
Meanwhile, in the books from heaven, the first thing she says to him is “you drool when you sleep” and he doesn’t by any means win capture the flag. He almost f**king drowns before magical sea dad powers kick in
witches_warlocks but they do that in the second movie... which makes it look like she bleached her hair
I don't mind the hair color, it annoys me but whatever, what makes me hate the movies is that they don't even FOLLOW THE PLOT. Like if a movie changes a few details whatever, depending on how big the detail is it goes from annoying to eh whatever, but when the movies don't even follow the plot of the books? That pisses me off.
Rick Riordan is a absolute lad
Y E S
Katelyn Cook a mad lad

So, what he's saying is that Chris did plan on making Harry, Ron and Hermione older, but JK Rowling said, "No! They are supposed to be 11, because, 17 is the legal voting and drinking age in The Wizarding World, and it just so happens that it's the age they graduate from Hogwartz, and 11 is the age you are supposed to be when you become a Hogwartz student, plus, the characters are supposed to age throughout the series. If you bump them up to 17, then Hogwartz becomes irrelevant, since they are already at the legal voting and drinking age, and, the characters will most likely reach their middle ages when the Battle of Hogwartz takes place." And so he didn't, but he thought he could get away with it adapting Percy Jackson, which by the way, according to Rick Riordon, he didn't, and the film franchise stopped after two movies because Logan Lerman was too bloody old by the time The Titan's Curse was supposed to be made.
aging the characyers up to 17 in H.P is so stupid i'm dumbfounded

i thought it stopped because it was doing bad financially and no one cared to invest in it anymore (not to mention their major threat of Kronos was stopped in the sea of monsters for some idiotic reason so there'd be nothing else to do but bring Gaia in prematurely (but seeing as no one read past the second book clearly they wouldn't know about her))

No it will suck, they will make the characters black
I think they should've kept Percy twelve not because he reflects on the audience but because I always saw that aspect as a tragedy, although not really pointed out that I can remember in the books, sense Greek has lots of tragedies, its kind of one of the main themes of many myths and Rick definitely understands that so the fact that he's twelve not only shows that it's a family story but because this is where Percy's life goes downhill at a young age
Gabe Fum they should’ve done it like they filmed the Harry Potter films, where they got kids who were around the age (so 12-14 year olds) and looked like the characters.
@@michalkatec.6841 yep. And then a film every 1-2 (maybe 3) years so the actors still look young enough to be 14, 15, 16
Hardest part would be Heroes Of Olympus cause they don't age then again they could change that sense the age isn't as important (that I know of, I just started reading Son Of Neptune)
@@bea4828 They could film HoO in one go, like Lord of the Rings. It would probably take a over a year (maybe two, idk), which means the characters wouldn't age too much, or not even visibly.
@@jay8569 well that could work, just note its 5 films instead of 3 which would mean it would need the biggest budget of all time for all 5 and would take a pretty long time, and it would make the studio go into a deep depression because if they fail then they would lose a *lot* of money.

Hahaha 😂 so true tho...

Yeah, by that time Percy and Annabeth wouldn’t need to hold the sky up to have a streak of gray hair.
Bro, PJO could’ve eclipsed HP as the greatest fantasy film-book series of all time if they nailed the movies (books were already better imo). What with the character development, major plot movement, and follow up series (HoO), it could’ve been great. Guess we’re gonna have to stick to our own dam (uwu) noggins to get the job done. I wish Warner Brothers could have done the Percy Jackson movies. The Harry Potter movies aren't perfect adaptations, but they're very good. If this had happened we might have gotten at least a halfway decent Percy Jackson movie or movies.
The one thing that always leaves me amazed is that this is from the same director who did the first two Harry Potter films. It really is. So I doubt the studio would have made a difference...
Kathrin Lindern but Columbus did want to make a lot of changes which J.K. Rowling didn't allow - because the studio still gave her creative control over the story

When I read Percy Jackson, I didn’t know there were movies. I was in my local library looking for movies and stumbled across Percy Jackson. I was thrilled and I was stunned I hadn’t heard of it. As a naive 12 year-old, I didn’t know that because I hadn’t heard of it it probably wasn’t good. I watched it with my dad and kept saying “they changed this” and “they changed that”. By the end of the movie, I was disgusted and outraged about how they had butchered the plot and characters. Because I had checked out both, I watched the second as well. I was shocked that it practically skipped to the end of the series. It was awful and horrifying as a book fan to watch. Rick had it right at the start. The producers either didn’t know how to read or were quite simply idiots. I am pleading and hoping that we get a reboot so that PJ fans of the future have an adaptation to look forward to.

He’s definitely referring to the Eragon movie, which was a travesty even WORSE than the PJO movies.
Ryan B I miss 5 minutes ago when I didn’t know it existed. Now I’m sad.
What’s worse is I had to be told to read Eragon. When I did, I then understood exactly what the hell that travesty of a film was. Jesus, how did they mess it up that bad
Eragon was a terrible movie but I think the PJO ones were worse. The director bragged about having not read the books. Yeah, the Eragon book made it impossible to make a sequel but it seemed the PJO one did at first too. The Eragon film was still absolutely awful and nothing like the book, but I also feel it wasn’t as far off in terms of tone and target audience. Plus, PJO was written way better so it personally hurt me more to see the soul from the original text cut away to create the film adaptation.
I’m a little biased because I kind of grew to dislike the Eragon book series, which I’d once loved, after discovering it was plagiarised from various other books and realising those books were written much better. The author was young and only got published because he had rich parents, and the lack of editing and originality bothered me as I got older and read more widely. I think they’d have benefited a lot from a couple more looks over and modifications from some professional editors. Still, no book deserves an adaptation as bad as the one Eragon received. Definitely not an adaptation as bad as the Lightning Thief movie.

In the first email they were probably talking about how bad Eragon was, that movie was horrifically disappointing and appealed to a similar audience. Plus it came out 3 years before they started work on The Lightning Thief and they were both from 20th Century Fox. Ageing up the characters also makes monsters less of a threat than in the book. It's supposed to be extremely rare for half-bloods to live past 20 because of how fast monsters sense them and attack. Now you're telling me that the half-blood that uses monster beacons(technology) is living up till 16 while also having big 3 blood in him?

Wow. This is really upsetting to see, especially since I love writing myself and am currently working on my own story and fantasy world. If I managed to ever have a movie that had such glaring flaws, I’d be pissed too. Especially if they didn’t even consider *twelve pages* of notes on how to rework it and gain the audience. The producers can’t understand that moviegoers today are looking to see the vision of someone else when they go to a movie. How do they view the world? What were their raw ideas like? If you take those away, you are no longer telling a story. You are just giving someone information. Stories have emotion, tone, and draw from real experience. Once you lose the author’s experience and vision, you lose all of those elements, so you lose a great movie.
LATE BUT "DEAD ON ARRIVAL" FJJDFSJFJSJS THE LIGHTNING THIEF MUSICAL
When I first watched the movies after I read the first books and I literally cried. I was so upset that Annabeth wasn’t like her book self and percy want like himself either. I think they jut took grovers name and stuck him to a new character. But I honestly would want to see what about ten funds could write a script and see if the could stay true to the book
A part that really annoyed me was the constant insistence that Percy was the most amazing camper just because he was son of Poseidon. I noticed that in a scene where Luke was directing a sword fighting class. Percy was paired with annabeth (even though Luke took him as his partner because he was new) and he immediately bested her in fighting with a sword that felt heavy and uneven to him, even though she had years of experience NOT TO MENTION she is the daughter of Athena, goddess of many things including BATTLE AND BATTLE STRATEGY.
@@foofy.friend Big agree. It also ruined Annabeth as a stronger female character and they just dumped her down to "lol love interest."
She is mandatory to the story with her fighting and strategy skills and they just took that away!!
@@foofy.friend Especially since in the books, he was basically terrible at everything except canoeing. The only reason he even had a chance against Ares was that Ares was dumb enough to fight him on a beach. Percy used his powers, his wit, and his tactics to win (plus a healthy dose of the Power of Friendship, which I think is just fine in this context because it was earned).

12:25 there is a reason his main child is also called Persassy.
I read these books with my son and LOVED them....confession time - After my son went to bed I took his Percy Jackson books and read them without him. The strength of the stories wasn't actually the Greek mythology and the battles and the heroics. And it certainly wasn't about the romance even if that did play a part in the longer trajectory of the story. Rick Riordan very skillfully weaved stories about children with challenges using or overcoming their disadvantages to become heroes. And it was a choice, not destiny which always earns extra points in my book. All of the kids in the story come from a variety of broken homes and they have what would normally be considered a learning disability. It's relatable and inspiring. Plus there are monsters and it's funny. The series was perfect and they could have made a great series of movies...but they didn't.
The movie was so disappointing. I took my son to watch it because we were both fans and to this day I still stew about that train wreck. They stripped every ounce of redeeming social value from the movie and substituted a cheap tropey teen romance. The pearls were so stupid and unnecessary! And he was 100% right about what they did to Lucas...and actually all of the characters. They made all of the characters less appealing in the movie. I knew Rick Riordan didn't have anything to do with the movie after I saw. It must have been truly horrible for him to have to see his amazing books turned into that live action piece of crap.
Behold Uncle Rick, the god of writing, the origin of Persassy himself
Honestly uncle Rick is my favorite author, even tho his books aren’t my favorite anymore, but he genuinely care so much for his fans and I’ve felt that since I was a lil baby Demigod.
One of my favorite memories was reading The Throne of Fire(Kane Chronicles) and read the author bio, and found out he lived in the city I was about to move to. When I moved, I found out that he was gonna be there for the releasing of The Serpent’s Shadow to sign up to four books for free. I waited in a long ass line and got to see my favorite author, and the man who made me feel normal for having adhd, and got four of my books(including two new ones) hand signed.
He’s since moved , so it won’t happen again, but I look up to this precious man so much, and he didn’t deserve this
6:22 It has to be Eragon! It was also produced by Dune Entertainment, based off a book, and gained pretty bad reviews about 4 years previous.
I remember seeing this movie opening weekend when i was in 7th grade with my family. when it was finished I was disgusted by the lack of effort in the adaptation. this series meant a lot to me because growing up i had trouble reading and me and my dad started reading the harry potter series to help me learn. then we stared this series and had fun going through this journey with these characters. So watching this movie was so much more painful.
Same...
"They're talking about adult stuff, and I don't wanna be apart of that."
Same
Personally I feel like a HoO longform TV show could work, because they could adapt it perfectly for various seasons. Yeah, you'd have to change a few things, but Percy and Jason losing their memories would be the perfect start point.
gUESS WHAT MY FRIEND
A NEW SERIES ARE COMING UP ON DISNEY+
rick asked if the production can read and i stan that man
'hes gonna get hit with a bus with that'
wonderfull description
I remember going to the theater with my family for my sister as she really loved the books. I distinctly remember after watching the movie she was extremely mad, and was ranting about how they ruined the story. At the time I had no idea what she was talking about, but now that I am finally reading the books I agree with her. The movies are horrendous
* are horrendous
@@queenofcool1478 oops lol lemme fix it
I wonder if the producers look back to these emails and are like "oh shit, we should have listened"
of Course hes sassy.
how should he've been able to write percy otherwise
it's amazing, he's amazing, he's why Magnus and Percy and he'll even Hearthstone who can't even talk are beautifully sassy
Ricks tweets are just my rants about the movies in a controlled manner
When I start listing the movies problems with people who have only seen them and not read the books, i normally start with Anabeth's hair because that is something they seem to actually understand. When I start about the structure differences, theur eyes glaze over and they don't understand a single point I'm trying to make.
aaaand we finally have a Disney series adaptation
anybody else suddenly have this video on their recommendations? lol
Haha, yep
7:43
you underestimate the power of 12 year old's
*olds
Never underestimate us
When I was in sixth grade I read Percy Jackson in my class and we watched the movie and one of the things we did was to WRITE OUT THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE BOOK AND MOVIE oh god that was a lot of things
Your teacher is a god/goddess, but also probably made your hands hurt, + how many pages was it?12?16?
@ha ze
True
watching this days after rick announced the Disney+ series :) very excited
gotta say, other than General Malaise, my least favorite thing about the movies is Hades.
The entire point of Hades' character in the books is to show that just because someone is the easy person to blame doesn't mean they did it, that the simple answer isn't always correct, and on a more metaphorical level, that death is not the worst thing that can happen to a person, but a natural part of life. Hades isn't exactly nice and fun, but he's not the villain. He's just the guy that always gets blamed.
in the movie he's a gigantic jerk. I would use stronger language (much, much stronger language) but this is a place where Kids Might Be. Not only that, but they make him mirror Stinky Gabe as an abusive trashbag who looks like a retired member of a metal band, and not even a good one. They do what every single gods damned greek mythology adaptation does - they conflate him with the Devil and make him the villain when historically? Hades minds his own damn business.
I'm a Classics major. That means I'm going to college to study Ancient Greece and Rome. I've read the original texts, I've analyzed Homer, Hesiod, and a million other ancient writers. The only beef anyone ever has with Hades, other than being Generally Kinda Scary, is the kidnapping of Persephone, which has so many different versions with different levels of consent from Persephone. Let's compare that with Zeus, who's in every other myth as a terrible baby daddy with Hera as a cruel and vengeful villain, or Ares, who continually stirs conflict. Heck, let's compare that with Poseidon, another terrible baby daddy (admittedly less terrible than Zeus, but that's like saying the Zodiac killer is less terrible than Hitler - they're both terrible, but one's on a whole other level)
Oh how far weve come..the series is confirmed and now we PRAY
And now years later, we're getting a live action tv show with age appropriate actors, ande rick fully involved in the whole process
luzandreahc yea, I was about to comment this
One of my favorite things about Percy Jackson is that it shows other sexuality’s, but Rick does it in a easy way that remains calm. All of the characters are so chill about those kinds of things.
i hate Percy Jackson movies too! Instead of them being tweens, they're 17, and it completely ruined my vision of the books, so i just pushed the movies out of my mind so they didnt ruin the books for me. im reading trials of apollo so i searched youtube for percy jackson videos that werent crap, and youre the best one i found!!!!! the Percy Jackson movies deserved better. They deserved Harry Potter fame, not those stupid movies
I should not have been drinking water when I watched this. Uncle Rick made water fly out my nose
So since everyone already calls these movies "Peter Johnson Movies" I thought: Wouldn't it have been cool if Peter Jackson had directed them? And not just because of the name, I mean, he has proven himself very capable in adapting fantasy novels...
I personally would've loved to see that
6:26 The other movie is Avatar The Last Airbender. Judging by the dates and that it's a franchise the same generation that grew up with percy got to grew up with, it DEFINITELY was avatar the last airbender live action the one Riordan was referencing. The flack they got from all the gross changes from cartoon to live action was massive.
Rick deserved time be heard. I hope if Disney doesn’t make more Percy Jackson movies I want to remake them. If I do remake them I would really like to have all the help I can get and I hope you guys can help me one day. Great video!!! Love your channel!!!
*To be heard*
I think it is The series of Misfortune Events they took of the glasses since they thought he looked like Harry Potter
Your dramatic reading of these tweets are the only valid part of the internet.
Same thing happened to me.I got introduced to the books by the movies.
y'all you can HEAR rick's dry sarcasm in the emails, just like you can hear it in his books
There actually is going to be a Percy Jackson series on Disney+ now and I’ve been mentally screaming ever since I found out
coming back here after the disney plus news is WHEW
Guessing that other movie was Eragon, another movie that diverged significantly from it's book source.
i remember 2 years ago we were all ignoring the trash movies and *hoping* for an animated series and now WE GETTIN A SHOW ON DISNEY PLUSSSSSS
I actually didn't know about the second email until this video and holy SHIT i've never seen someone try to not come across as wildly pissed off this much before.
I’m 11 I hated the movies the books were amazing I have read them 8 times
Linda McKenzie I love the books too. But no need to reveal your age.
They aged down holly short in the live action Artemis Fowl... help.
I’ll admit it: I first got interested in the Percy Jackson series when I stumbled upon the trailer for the first movie. It looked so cool that I burned through the first four books the summer between 6th and 7th grade, and it was awesome. The finale came out right around my 13th birthday and that book was the only thing on my birthday wish list.
My best friend and I adore the series. I never quite got into the Riordan’s other series, but she’s really into the sequel series, and my sister’s in love with the Kane Chronicles. Riordan’s a fantastic writer whose books I still go back to frequently even though I’ve long since aged out of the target demographic.
His work deserved better than the pitiful tripe it got. I just remember thinking as I watched the first movie, “Did they not read the whole series before jumping in? They totally screwed up any chance of carrying out the series arc, and it’s just the first movie!” It was just as bad as the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie.
The scene that gets me most is the lightning battle with Luke on top of the Empire State Building. Like... seriously? Wtf? The SFX aren’t even that good. It’s terrible and cheesy and takes away all drama from the betrayal. Luke’s a Greek tragic figure, taken in by his hubris and hidden layers of pain. He’s not a mustache-twirling cartoon villain.
I was optimistic, though. I assumed that because they ruined any chance of carrying on the overarching plot, they couldn’t ruin the other books. AND THEN THEY MADE THE SECOND MOVIE. AND TEASED A THIRD MOVIE AT THE END OF THAT.
Oh well. At least they stopped before they could botch Bianca and Nino’s characters.
I love how the captions literally shown Twilight as Toilet.
Coincidence? I think not.
