Ni No Kuni 2 Nintendo Switch Review - A Disappointing Sequel

  • Ni No Kuni 2 is a disappointing sequel. In this review of Ni No Kuni 2 for the nintendo switch I talk about what makes this game so disappointing compared to the first. Sure they updated the combat and team AI to not be horrible, but the story, mechanics and overall presentation feel like they all got a huge downgrade in the process. It's truly a baffling sequel to a game and series that had a lot of potential.

I was forewarned about this game by a friend who told me it was a “technically challenged” game on the switch. Didn’t know it had so many other problems. Thanks for the detailed review bud. I will just stick to the First Ni No Kuni for now. Btw, my most disappointing sequel was Crysis 2. They sorta dumbed it down in many aspects compared to the original.

I've played Wrath of the White witch twice, just going onto my third playthrough now which is why I was watching videos on it to get into the zone for it. When I playe the sequel I... ugh.. I feel like it was a fever dream. Yes I went for the platinum on ps4 for it, but it wasn't memorable, most of it was a genuine slog. The story is what gripped me on the first one, the monsters kept me invested. The second one... was boring, no monsters, worse graphically and lost the Ghibli charm. It genuinely doesn't feel like the same franchise for a huge amount of it.
I wanted it to get better, I pushed myself to enjoy it. I couldn't tell you half of the journey now and I have no plans to play it again

Ah that's a shame, as I have it sitting in my Steam Library ready for a rainy day. All I had heard up to this video, was positive things for this game. Wow has youtube and gaming come to this?
Any even modestly sized youtuber praised this game.
    I said
What's there to praise? Once I broke this game down I was far harsher to this game than even u were. I was mind fucked how anyone and everyone else wasn't even mentioning the glaring issues with this game like holy fuck.
Sure if u just wanna button mashing slasher it's fine but oh man I was really really let down by this one.
The only praise I gave it was Evans voice actor was absolutely adorable. (Evan saying gosh melts my heart.). Evans cape looks and animates brilliantly and the game does look in redibly adorable. BUT besides that it was a very pretty and strong flop of a game.
I just feel like people's expectations for games nowadays have gone so low we just accept this nowadays and call it a good game. If I'm being generous maybe it's average. MAYBE but I'd never say it's good. EVER!!!
Keep up the honest reviews if u can or care too cause it seems most others dont.

My most disappointing sequel is Final Fantasy 7, not because it's the worst sequel I've ever played (far from it). However I played it after the PC Port came out which allowed the cultural hype of the game to have peaked & I'd been playing JRPGs for years prior to its release.
Having played not only Final Fantasy 3/6 & then moved onto Chrono Trigger & Mario RPG, both introducing some specific things that improved on each other & evolved JRPG gameplay (non-random battles & timed button presses in combat). These improvements felt like staples to the genre after they were introduced (mostly non-random battles), but Final Fantasy 7 lacked these. It also wasn't as "crazy" of a story for someone who'd played a few previous Final Fantasy games.

I feel very similar! I played the PS1 FF games last after playing 1-6 and 10 and 12 and 7 just could not live up to the hype. I will say FF7R gave me a completely new perspective on the game in general though. Loved how they fleshed out the characters, especially Aerith and really connected with the game in a way I never could with the original PS1 game. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!

My main problem with the game is that the developers thought it was a good idea to purposely limit your inventory saying that quote if we allow you to use as many items as you want in battle the battle would be too easy and I'm just stunned at how the f*** is that makes no sense at all the players should have the freedom to use whatever items they want at anytime without it being limited

    • @capn_sarge
      @capn_sarge  Рік тому +1

Yeah, I get the idea, but maybe make it a difficulty option or something? Definitely added a lot of grind to the game that didn't need to be there. I feel no shame in using 50 items to beat a boss vs. grinding for another hour or two.

I LOVED the original Ni No Kuni, and came away really hating 2. The art style is the only thing that seemed consistent with the sequel. Everything else I loved about the first game - story, combat system, familiars, world... just isn't there. The action RPG (in reality hack n slash) was the absolute worst, causing me to do something I rarely every do with an RPG - not finish it. The stupid Dynasty Warriors type of zerg battles was the worst part of it all. It all felt like the developer didn't know what they wanted the game to be, which is unfortunate.

I disagree. It was good near the start, then got progressively worse, towards the end I was only playing because of sunk cost fallacy. I imagine the writers felt the same way I did. Motivated near the start, completely burnt out “who gives a shit” attitude near the end. Hence why they just put a bunch of 0-explanation, nonsensical gibberish together so they can hurry and move on to the next project. Just like me, desperately trying to pinch off this turd so I can move on to the next game.

It feels like the writers only remembered in the last 30 minutes of the game that he had a family that died on earth, so they added an obligatory dead son cutscene. Seriously Roland? Now you care? You’ve spent (what seems like) months on this foreign plane of existence, right after your country gets vaporized, and your family turned to dust, yet he doesn’t give a care in the world. he’s already in a great mood and all he cares about is making Evan a great king in a great kingdom. Then in the finale he goes “ohhh my son died ohh the tragedy”. Then he gets transported back to earth and everything is ok again. Ok. Yup. Thanks for wasting my time.

I adore the first Ni No Kuni, but this one was... A disappointment. I wanted SO BAD to like it, but it just felt like a drag. I slogged through the story, wondering where it all was going, only for it to be a crappy twist that was trying to, effectively, hijack the original's twist. The ONLY part I really enjoyed was the Kingdom Mode, and even that was lackluster. The money and Kingsguilders should NOT have been linked to actual playtime. It should have been linked to real world time, or to key points/objectives in the game, or even for quests. The skirmishes were... okay, but dragged on later. Arguably, as moderately enjoyable as the Kingdom Mode was, the thing I appreciate the most is the characters, and most of that is because I, in my mind, augmented their barebones, early nonexistent, cookie-Cutter personalities with my personal ideas. They were barely there, and aside from some of them being cute and adorable (Li Li deserves ALL the headpats), they were STILL disappointing.
In all, the game was a huge letdown. The first had so much charm, and it was practically all squandered in 2.
