Cu chulainn was 5 when he killed the dog. Also the dog was the size of a horse and was actively trying to kill him

The ending of the myth is where Red leaves out some VERY important details. The most important of which is that the raven that lands on Cu Chulainn's shoulder is actually The Morrigan in disguise. Basically, because Cu Chulainn fought so valiantly, The Morrigan decides to directly intervene and help him finish of the rest of Queen Medb's forces. After that first guy loses his hand, another person tries to attack Cu Chulainn, but this time the Raven/Morrigan flies forward and block the strike, there's this massive explosion of light, and when it dies down, half of Queen Medb's remaining army is dead in a single blow. Realizing that it was The Morrigan that did this, Medb calls it quits and leaves.

Fun Fact: Cú Chulainn is actually a nickname meaning “Hound of Chulainn” in reference to being the replacement dog. His birth name is Sétanta.

Cu Chulainn used his own intestines to tie himself to the rock when he died. METAL
Also yeah Cu Chulainn did a LOT of stuff before his death. A reminder that at MOST he was 17 by the time he died. His age was a bit inconsistent, with the most consistent thing being that he was REALLY young most of the time

Yup. This set of myths is one of a few surviving ones from that region in pre-Christian times.

Red also skipped the Part where Cu slept with Scahach and her daughter, and how Scahach got the spear was watching two sea monsters kill each other and harvesting one of their bodies.

When Red covers a myth she is summarizing it so she can't really include everything single thing in the myth

I kind of agree with you about King Arthur when it comes to the idea of "several characters being merged into one person". So far there are two or three main candidates that historians have identified as possible inspirations for the legend, so I think it really is completely plausible that people would combine those figures into one character to create the mythos. For example, his birth name might have been Artorius Castus, and he might have had both Romano-British and Sarmatian ancestry, and for his actions on the battlefield prior to him becoming "King Arthur", he was given the title "Riothamus" by the Roman Empire. Or "Riothamus" might have been the title given to his father. There are so many different ways you can piece historical stuff together to create a legend.

Yeah the older OSP videos tend to just... power through everything at (pun intended) warp speed. I’m kind of hoping some of the older Miscellaneous Myths videos get remade, similar to the earlier history ones. Especially this video in particular because even though I know very little about Celtic myths, I love the general vibes of them

I haven't done any research other than videos like this, but I believe the reason he killed the dog is cause he was actually invited to a party but he showed up late so the dog attacked him as it was a guard dog.

He killed the dog because he was supposed to join a royal party held at Chulainn's house, but he delayed playing sports with other boys, saying he'd catch up later. Chulainn, thinking the entire party had arrived, set loos his specially bred, vicious, monstrously-trained attack dogs to guard his borders while the royal party was present. Setanta (later Cu Chulainn) came along, and, being attacked by the guard dog, slew it by batting a stone into it's head, with his hurly-stick (a piece of game equipment, kind of like a cricket bat).

3:30 Yeah, there's a reason Wales has the highest concentration of castles in the world. The region was a nightmare to keep under control for the English.
I'm not entirely sure she was skipping over things on purpose (though she might have been), but legends and folktales do have a tendency of skipping steps in places, especially when they're recording an oral tradition they barely understand, the Greek and Roman myths are somewhat unique in the west for being written by people who actually lived in the relevant culture.

Cu Chulainn was actually described as pretty strange even at the best of times. He was mostly good-looking, but he had seven-fingered hands and seven-toes feel and seven-eyed pupils and striped hair.

Something that ties King Arthur to Irish/welsh Celtic mythology even more is a throw away line in some of the old versions of the myths of Arthur, there’s a court musician in his court breifly mentioned to be called taliesin, who is a character with a whole myth with cerridwen in Celtic mythology

So if I remember correctly, Cu Chulainn, then going by his childhood name of Setanta, had to kill Chulainn's guard dog because of some misunderstanding, usually attributed to Cu being late or Chulainn letting out his super dangerous guard dog too early. Naturally, he feels bad about killing Chulainn's prized guard dog even if it was in self defense, so he offers his own services as a guard until such time that he's raised a suitable replacement dog that meets Chulainn's standards. This is where the nickname of 'Cu Chulainn' or 'Hound of Chulainn' comes from, and is also presumably the reason behind Cu's Geass(a personal oath that confers some kind of boon in exchange for severe consequences should the Geass be broken voluntarily or otherwise) stipulating that he can't eat dog meat. Queen Medb later uses this against him by tricking him into eating dog meat via the customs of courtesy saying Cu cannot refuse an offering of food, but while demoralized and weakened from breaking his Geass, Cu is still a monstrous badass.
It should also be noticed that Queen Medb is later killed by getting conked over the head with an old cheese wheel, which I consider karmic retribution for being complicit in the act of killing a dog and feeding it to a young man already suffering from the guilt of being forced to kill a dog as a child.
