He's shit at being a captain. His decisions all rely on his own wits, and they have lethal consequences. In war, you know to expect danger, and what type of danger.

When it comes to the designs, most of the characters were based of the actual singers. It's something the community decided to do. Some animatic design choices came from Jorges own Interpretations that he mentioned in his TikToks. Jorge also adores the animatics and later decided to use some in his promotional material.
Also yes Jorge is both writer and the singer of Odysseus.
Huh, so that's where the designs came from. Makes a lore more sense why they were so unified. 😮
@@Airier Considering Odysseus' patron Olympian and mentor to his line was Goddess Athena herself - the glasses being available make sense. I mean, her spiritual animal was the Owl - and someone being Owl Eyed was an old way to say someone wore spectacles :P

Jorge has spoken about how he has changed parts of the story and characters to serve this retelling. Odysseus is much softer in the beginning than in the book because this story is focusing on his descent into becoming a monster. When he finally gets home he won't be the man Penelope fell in love with.

Even if we went with it being Neoptolemus, though, it would have still been on Odysseus' orders.

Just for context the reason Polites wears glasses is because all the characters designs are based off the actors who voice them in real life, and the voice actor of Polites (Steven Dookie), you guessed it, wears glasses.

That explains why so many Odeseus look so similar. They all look similar, even when the artist changes.
Important to note that the animators aren’t always collaborating. The animatics are based on the songs, the original mythology, the animator’s interpretation, and the information Jorge gave about his process of making it. They are not necessarily “cannon”
One of the details animators keep in mind a lot is how all vocals are diegetic. And are always from actual people (mostly the soldiers) except in the presence of a god cause they can just summon their own backing vocals/chorus.

there are exceptions of course, those being animatics commissioned by jorge himself! these are the animatics that show up on the official livestreams- its where the canon designs and visual-only interactions can be found (such as the god games ending, or certain details of mutiny).
this is usually the only time collaboration is happening between jorge and the artists, and even though artists can make official animatics they can still choose to make their own unique animatics. i love seeing the various designs and interpretations its one of my favorite things abt this fandom!!

Athena in Epic has a power called Quick Thought where she can basically pull someone onto like, a different plane of existence briefly and have an entire mental conversation with them in seconds. The weirdness at the end of Open Arms was Odysseus being pulled into Quick Thought.

Fun fact about Remember Them: The omission of proper burial rights means that the soul cannot cross the river Styx as they don't have the price for Charon. They would linger on the shores of Styx for a hundred years before allowed to cross or possibly become ghosts.

Actually, I believe this is correct, but they would become wraiths and not ghosts. Scylla says in her song (in the thunder saga) that the people dying would 'live our their lives as wraiths', meaning if they can't be buried and have the proper rights done, their souls linger and become wraiths.
I love how Gigi’s Odysseus shown right when he’s leaving for war looks so similar to how Telemachus looks in her animations further down the line

Jorge Rivera-Herrans, the creator and voice of Odysseus, didn't get a single penny in royalties from these two sagas, so when he released the latest saga, Thunder Saga, he also released Official Concept Albums of the two sagas.
When I found that out about that I remember being so mad the epic team deserves their money!

39:27 This beginning part of the song features a pretty infamous recurring theme in the musical known as 'The Danger Motif'. a lot of people had a hard time trying to find where it was used, but this is the first instance of it

Well, it might be the first repetition of the danger motif, but it first actually appeared in the horse and the infant, during the war scene when everyone is fighting.
It’s interesting to me when you listen to it just how many motifs are shared from the first song, like with survives opening verse being the same as the part leading up to the infant if you listen to the melody of Zeus singing.

Just so you know, Jorge has pulled a Taylor Swift and re recorded the first two sagas as he wasn’t getting any royalties from them. So if yall want to stream the Troy saga and cyclops saga make sure to use the newer albums.

Not quite there is a slim path of being efficient and preventing more harm then needed. Problem is, he always misses it between wrong mercy and going over the top with cruelty pretty much, every choice he makes in either direction leading to desastrous hurt in every directions
The character designs are modeled after their singers! Odysseus is voiced by the creator of this entire musical, Jorge. The reason Polites has glasses is because his VA, Steven, also wears glasses. Just helps differentiate between all the characters you're gonna meet!

Pretty much, she trains him to be efficientt, careful, clever take calculated risks.... He becomes a monster by instead trying to get aeay with wrong mercy to make himself feel better or when that comes back to bite him to over correct into needless cruelty

I cannot wait for you to suffer through the sagas. The epic Animators are like the goddamn flash but an army in releasing these animations. The newest saga came out around 2 weeks ago and there are over 40 something animations on just 3 songs

The thing is Polyphemus is a young cyclops which he was bullied for so his father gave him the sheep and the sheep became his only friends and which Odysseus killed then compared the worth of his friend to the worth of wine so yeah Polyphemus was offended
This isn't quite canon in the Odyssey (He's "the most godlike of cyclopes," whatever that means), but he IS the youngest of the herd.

0:15 The first saga is about the end of the Trojan War. The rest is about the Odyssey
There's two different accounts about who threw Astyanax from the battlements - Pausanius says he was thrown by Neoptolemus (son of Achilles) while "illiou persis" aka "The Sack of Troy" (author unknown) says it was Odysseus who did it. Either way, his fate was debated by the Greek war council, and the threat of him becoming an avenging son was what ultimately led to the infant being thrown.
Edit to Add: Interestingly, the two accounts about the death of the son of Hector are only found in those two poems, which were written after Homer's Illiad. Technically that makes those accounts in-Era fanfiction... take that how you will.
Lancelot is also an oc in king Arthur, same for his son replacing him later when the thing with the queen is no longer socially acceptable
Off-topic but I swear this animatic had a mute section after the music that shows his hand opening, implying he dropped the baby. But several reactors haven’t shown it. Am I thinking of the wrong animatic?
@@a.n.9800 After the problem with Blair Russel Productions (the original music label Jorge used to release the songs deciding not to pay royalties or release ownership of socials back to Jorge) - the first two Sagas (Troy and Cyclops) had to be re-recorded with a new, improved mix.
Gigi then remastered the animatics with the new audio, *adding* the opening hand as Jorge had finally revealed (in "Monster") that Odysseus really did drop the infant - and most videos you've seen have people reacting to the original version of the animatic, not a "cut" version.

Welcome to Epic! Since I haven't seen anyone mention this here is a few things to know: Each character has at least one instrument tied with them, that a special feature we'll come back to later. Whenever a god sings they can summon back up vocalists to sing with them since they are so powerful, however whenever a human character sings whenever there are back up vocals other beings has to be there with them.
Edit: Also in Greek society/tradition if you gave someone an apple it means you care for someone deeply. Also re listen to the Lotus Eaters you hear some say "Scary cave".

I just started this with you, that final line in the first one! “The blood on your hands is something you won’t lose, all you can choose is whos.”
Yeah, the thing to keep in mind with this adaptation is that the original epic written by Homer was in general a cautionary tale about why you don't wanna piss off the gods while the musical is focused less on the gods and more on the crew's perspective of the odyssey.
Also ancient greeks did not have a lot of consideration for morality, while this is all about where the moral lines lie, and what it does to people to cross them
If this is not a future Live Action Musical- I DEMAND an Animated Movie Musical with the best studio putting the work on it! HIRE some of those ANIMATORS!

Mircsy's design of Polyphemus takes aspects of Poseidon's creations and combines them. A tentacled face like a sea creature, and hooves of a horse.
(I commented this before you mentioned it. It went over my head until I read about the reason, so my dumb brain assumed most people wouldn't know.)

It is very reminiscent of Peter and The Wolf with how Jorge uses specific instruments to identify certain characters and it is reminiscent of Lin Manuel Miranda's work (Hamilton, Encanto, Etc...) as well with the pacing and sound! The glasses are actually in homage to the singer for Polites! Every character is modeled facially after their singer to an extent.
Also, in the song Remember Them, the reason Odysseus doesn't want to kill the Cyclops is because of Polites. Polites was his best friend and a very kind and loving individual, which was shown with the song Open Arms about just taking things easy for once and not resorting to violence immediately if there's another way. Athena's lessons as a Goddess of Wisdom and War are to never leave things unfinished but Odysseus is blinded by grief and wastes time trying to teach a lesson where there should be none. Athena abandons him who can't follow her teachings anymore, and Odysseus is left fully at the mercy of the God's who show none at all
Funfacts! There is a danger motif played everytime there is danger near, each charchter has there own instrument. Expect one person who just has backing vocals. And the rules of this world are gods can make there own backing vocals, but mortals have ti have others make them. Like when ody speaks the crew backs him up, or polties had tbe lotus eaters. But the gods such as athena dont need it! Also I do request you dont talk about too much about the future just because all of epic hasent been released yet and I havent read the odyssey yet so kinda spoilers lol. Anyways you know I love your content and Ive been asking for this for months so thank you SO much. If you wish to split up your watchs to saga then the cyclopse saga has one more song, the next one. The next one is the ocean saga with 4 songs, then the circe saga with 4 more, then the underworld with 3, and finally the newest saga/thunder saga has 5. I think there 3 more sagas that have yet to be released :) [also the cyclopse saga and the troy saga were recently remastered to if you decide to listen to this in your free time please listen to thise instead as the orginals were not giveing the creators his royalties] when your cuahht up I truely reccmend chrcking out the creator/odyseus as he is AMAZING and funny and has but so much thought and detail into his songs that I cant even fit here and just trust me when I say there is so much beneath the surface to the music, its truely genuis. Every character has their own instrument too. Odysseus has an acoustic guitar and an electric guitar, Athena has a piano, not sure what Polites instrument is though. Eurylochus stands out though because he has the crew backing him up.

Polites has glasses cause his Voice Actor/singer has glasses. Same with Eurylocheus in terms of features as well, and Odysseus is acted and sung by Jorge himself, and also matches the features of the actor/singer

For your own playlist purposes: Please listen to the new versions of the songs in the Cyclops and Troy Sagas! Due to a issue with the publishing company for the first two, Jorge is not getting any money from streams of the original versions. So recently he remade them in person with everyone from the cast.
i asways thought of the apple in that warrior of the mind animatic to be the golden apple that started the war and it represents athena's honor, while she may not have been given the golden apple, she's basically claiming odysseus and saying that she created the legendary hero that he is. just my personal interpretation :)

The Lotus Eaters did in fact come before Polyphemus' island. The main difference is that the musical starts with Odysseus' journey instead of with Telemachus, and for obvious reasons cuts off some of Odysseus' encounters (like the Laestrygonians - though they are indirectly mentioned; I'm at the 23:19 mark when writing this, so I don't know if you will reach to that part in this video).
There's also a small inside joke about the musical, related to the man who died at Circe's island: he was supposed to be mentioned in the musical and even be one of the main 'characters' there, though he was scrapped out, so the writer also didn't mention his death, you only know about it if you pay attention to how many people died before getting to Circe's island and after.
Editing to mention, the characters' design is actually based off the singers' actual looks.
Fun fact the ancient Greeks invented glasses so polites very much could have worn glasses
fun fact: there are other animatics that give the cyclops a more standard design. The specific animatics used here for suvive and polyphemus are fan favourites because of how CREATIVE they are with the cyclops' design, giving it a terrifying monstrousness that reflects its parentage while also displaying how its pain at the death of one of its sheep is genuine and how odysseus and his men aren't COMPLETELY innocent here even if they didn't mean any harm.

Jorge did initially write in a song about his men (especially Elpenor and Perimedes) that takes place with the lotus eaters. It was Elpenor saying they should just leave Perimedes there whilst Odysseus disagreed. It was later cut and just left as a draft and Elpenor was kinda cut from the musical and we don't hear from Perimedes until The Thunder Saga.
The apple of discord that indirectly started the Trojan war which is what I thought it referred to. An indirect act can have far reaching consequences
i loooovee how zeus doesn't mention telemachus at the end of the first song, where the verse at the start mentioned both in the same melodies, because he's trying to convince odysseus to kill someone else's baby boy. the little details in this song keep me awake at night its so good

He was the brightest of heros, going through the stories, that does not say as much as one would think. Theseus tried to steal persephone for his bro, jason thought cutting of the insanly powerful and ruthless woman who is the reason he made it to anything would not have any consequences ....
Compared to a lot of the other heroes of that time he's one of the smartest lol, the others lovedddd to piss the gods and wrong people off. There's a reason Athena chose Odysseus to mentor.
Also the crew members are so unbelievably stupid in the original story, they made Odysseus look like Einstein.
I love the detail where the cyclops emphasizes that they killed his favorite sheep and demanded someone dies, and since it was Ody who killed the sheep, the cyclops took someone of equal relation to him, which was Polites who is Ody’s best friend
