I'm having a tough time understanding the concept of why you're using certain shapes, and how do I apply this to my solos? Are you changing modes? Keys? I understand to follow the chord shapes, but seems there are notes not normally part of the scale... Are you changing modes? Or just including the arpeggio notes as part of the lead playing?

Have any of you ever wondered how many people Guthrie has helped without even charging a penny? I hope everyone who watches these free you tube offerings realizes the generosity. Guthrie has an extremely busy life, yet it is still important to him to provide these free lessons. We all owe him a ton of gratitude. Thank you, Guthrie and God bless you!

I love the way you address the guitar . When something makes sense , it is much easier to remember . Also every thing on this channel is valuable and very usable . A lot of the things you teach I had to learn by trial and error . You make learning guitar a life lesson . I wish I would have had you for a teacher when I started playing guitar in 1963 at 15 years old !

Great lesson Guthrie. That is probably one of the best lessons I have seen on this topic. One of the things that is not emphasised enough with guitar playing by instructors is the whole concept of visualisation. As you said, it only comes with doing the hard yards of practice and repetition and eventually the penny will drop and it all falls into place. I am sure your channel will grow very quickly once people see the clarity of your explanations and the quality of your tuition. Your melodic lines are like a breathe of fresh air. Looking forward to the next lesson. Keep em coming !

I have an ArtistWorks account only for Guthrie's videos and he has a few videos in the intermediate level that's incredibly similar to this one (same chord progression and all). I've watched the AW video at least a dozen times- no exaggeration and just spent about an hour pausing, rewinding, and continuing through this video and lemme tell ya, I'm still learning new stuff from basically the same lesson. I'm not getting paid by AW in anyway but man... if y'all never spent money on lessons or you're hesitant about online lessons, Guthrie's lessons are worth signing up for.
Also, one piece of advice for students who struggle visualizing the fretboard (Guthrie mentions this in every lesson that I can think of) PRACTICE IN FRONT OF A MIRROR. It's a game changer. Looking at charts/tabs and the view you get of the fretboard based on how your looking down at your guitar gets stale. By watching yourself in the mirror practice scales, CAGED chord shapes, and arpeggios, you get a totally different perspective that will help you develop as a guitarist.

The two lessons you did with Brett papa "Mastering the fretboard" and "soloing over chord changes" along with the above video are the best on You tube. I have learned so much. I just finished learning two of the five solos on mastering the fretboard. 3 more to go. This lesson really compliments the two lessons with Brett. Congrats on the success of those lessons. So when did pants with air vents come out. lol

DUDE, incredible as always. It blows my mind that someone as talented as yourself is available for private instruction. I don't even feel worthy to receive a personal lesson - but I'd love to get one someday. I understand exactly what you are trying to get us to see - it's just the journey there that's a little cloudy. I'll admit - I've never seen the need for practicing arpeggios - or how they are useful - but I get it now. You need to know where those notes are so you can tag them in passing. I feel like I should check out your online lessons first assuming you cover this same stuff - but this type of thing is EXACTLY what I've been trying figure out how to do for years. I'm so happy to have someone who can explain it. Beautiful playing as always - keep it up.

Hi Guthrie. I'm actually still learning the CAGED system and when i have doubts i watch your videos and remember i'm on the right track to finally sound musical!
The thing is i only know the notes of the E string , A string and (sort of) D string. Should i know all the notes on the fretboard on each and every string as a prerequisite in order to own the system, or moving onward with that foundation is enough?

RIGHT HERE, these are the keys to the kingdom. I live near New Orleans and there are so many great guitarists, and one in particular I saw play, his name is John Fohl, check him out... He plays a very musical style, where every note he plays sounds like the right note... I hit him up for a couple lessons and he does a similar thing but this is spelled out maybe a bit better, he plays through the chords and all its inversions when soloing. It doesn't sound like just riffing out licks (which I enjoy sometimes) but this is next-level stuff that seems like the "old timers" used to do more of, but it's just a way more musical way. I'm subscribing! Between you, Brett Papa and Tim Pierce, Corey Congilio, you are bringing great material for us somewhat-experienced weekend warriors to take us to the next level, and I thank you for it.

I wonder about switching between major and minor thinking with chords shapes and related scales. Is it better to just think in terms of major as far as connecting chord shapes and just shift everything over when changing to minor, or is it better to have two separate operating systems, if you will, one for major an minor in terms of visualizing shapes and their connections?

Hello, great lesson. i was wondering what the sort 'theory' was with the G#7 being the third. G#7 is still considered a major chord but the 3rd would be a minor in the key of E major, correct? is this just an artistic choice to substitute? if so, what are some of your rules of thumb when making this sub? thanks again!

I have been playing for so many years (like 35 or so) and all along I have been doing just what you are teaching without realizing it. I just thought it sounded cool. I had no idea that it was a proper thing to do. I've got a lot of holes in my playing because I do not know the names of the notes or the theory behind what I am playing. I try to play things in as many different places as possible, and then try to re-learn the same things without moving around so much. You have really boosted my confidence and inspired me to move forward and I sincerely thank you for that. I'm putting the pieces together slowly and it's so much fun. Man, for now I just want to say THANK YOU. I’ve been watching your videos for the last days and I definitely had what I can only define as some kind of musical enlightenment, haha. I’ll definitely get back to you, probably by email, just to thank you and explain how amazingly insightful e helpful your explanations have been.I already knew (at least I thought so...) what CAGED, arpeggios and scales were, but something clicked during the first time I watched one of your videos. Hard to explain how or even why exactly it happened just now, after years playing the guitar. But man, I feel I finally have answers, and A PATH to follow. Just crazy. It feels somewhat simple (simpler?) now to understand the why’s and how’s music works on the guitar neck. Haha. The last days have been super fun and studying now seems to have a very clear purpose and focus. I wish I had understood (or maybe found your videos) earlier. You’ll hear from me again! Thanks, Guthrie!

I’ll definitely arrange some skype classes with you. Let’s just wait for the exchange ratio Real/Dollar to get a little cheaper. Btw, greetings from Brazil!

Love your videos, Guthrie. On some level (Maybe?) it's nice to know that we're playing a Phrygian #4 with a flat 13 scale, but for sure, knowing what notes sound good over THIS chord, in THIS context, in THIS song is so refreshing. My progress as a player has taken a great leap forward since I discovered your channel a few months ago. Thank you for rekindling my spirit.

You are the best!! I’m becoming a lefty guitarist , after a bad accident with my bike two years ago... but your lessons are so precious Guithrie... for my new vision of the neck with the right hand! You are very kind person and thanks a lot!!!

All...if you don't have a looper, but do have an tablet, get the iReal Pro app to help with this lesson. It took me less than two minutes to put this chord progression together as a slow ballad in the app. Take GTs tips and run it up against this app...hours of solid practice. As always Guthrie, thanks for this...I always learn something!
