If you're an intermediate level guitar player who's struggling to make larger sense of it all, and you've just surfed your way to this video...you lucked out, friend. You've struck gold. Watch this and work with the simple yet profound concepts this great player introduces. You'll be very glad you did.
Thanks man!!!
This is it..I went to GIT .and ALL the Greatest use this..JOE PASS..HENDRIX..WES.. EDDIE VAN HALEN All of them
you are 100% correct
I've been trying to play for 50 years. I sort of (barely) know these triads but you make me think that for the first time in my life I might be able to play a musical solo. Thanks for all your lessons.
“Hats are my hairdo.” Love it! 🎩
20:18 he plays one of the most beautiful, unrushed, soulful musical pieces any of us have ever heard, then comments "That was a terrible example." Add humble to his list. Unlike most players, when he was playing I sensed zero % ego of that he was trying to show off. I was honored to watch a musical prodigy who does not quite understand how amazing he is. I am hoping "some" of this- any of this will rub off on this non-prodigy (who still relies on a digital tuner.)
....more I watch Guthrie the better I get ...he speaks English....cheers
Mark C Thanks man!!
Triad,to triad inversion,to pentatonic scale overlay to major scale overlay. Fundamental gold!
This is quite possibly the most important instructional video I’ve ever seen.
Hudson Handel wow. Thanks so much man!!
He's incredibly talented, humble and funny.. My favorite guitarist. And an incredible teacher.
Thanks man!!
jeez - I could listen to him all day. So great and really informative and useful. No fuss - No Muss. Just down home Playin !
Everyone is saying this is the most important CAGED lesson of our guitar playing lives. I agree. Thank you, Guthrie!
I've been working on Triads and their inversions for some time now and I know the shapes for the Major and minor traits as well on all 4 string sets. I know them intervallicaly. This is a great lesson to really focus on and learn how the intervals overlap from one triad to the associated triads. In this case the 1-3m-6m-4M-5M resolving back to the 1. I'm sure I'll be coming back to this vid for a few weeks at least to get this down hard! Too bad we can't give a vid like this a thumbs up every time we watch it.
Great!! Thanks man!!
It just flows out of you like water. Keep on lifting that lid for us Guthrie!
Learn that CAGED system, get those triads down then BOOM!
Davey thanks man!!
I've come back to this video so often because I learn something new each time.
I pick up knowledge more quickly on your videos than any of the others. There are a lot of great channels, but yours is my new favorite. Thank you!
I love that people say 'don't get too UA-camy'....it can be a fantastic vehicle for musicians and students alike, and can certainly get your name out there in a way that might not be possible otherwise. People like Tim Pierce have really kick started a nice little living and much broader fan base by using this medium to teach. Great videos anyway man, I've been playing for 31 years, many of those professionally and I'd watch these even if I knew a lot of what you were teaching because you're interesting, and easy to listen to.
Mox_au thanks so much man!! You’re right about all that. Tim was a nice guy to hang and play with when I was at his place a few months back.
I wish they had UA-cam as a kid because while trying to learn how to solo over changes it was all scales and modes and you had to overthink and everything sounded like scales and it was just confusing and unmusical. This is so simple and yet so musical and easy to learn. I appreciate it. And i am a hat man. I like Bailey's of Hollywood
Guthrie, I wish I could personally give you millions of dollars. Besides having the gift on the guitar, you have a great soul and deserve nothing but the absolute best in life. All the best to you and your music.
What a treat to be able to sit down on a Saturday morning with a coffee and learn from such a humble master .thank you Guthrie.
andy96356 thanks a bunch man!!
Honestly Guthrie, you are excellent at describing the things I've been searching for, for years. I've been playing the guitar for many, many years and have always struggled to play any sort of lead solos over chord progressions and am awe of those who can. Now, after watching a few of your videos it is beginning to make sense at last. You are an excellent teacher, thank you so much for sharing with us.
Alun Davies so happy to hear that! Thanks a bunch man!!
How is your playing coming along?
That was incredible and I loved the improv at the end, but my favourite part was right at the point I thought "that's how id love to play" he literally said "that was a pretty terrible example" 😂. Damned talented man.
This man knows music and needs more subsribers. Thanks again brother.peace
Jeremi Russell Thanks a bunch!!
@@guthrietrappmusic no problem any time. Wish i could visit where you are.
You're funny GT! "I don't know what I'm doin', at all. But...trust me, if you knew..." Priceless! Methinks you are the ONLY one who knows that!
I always thought the hats you wear are to keep the endless musical notes and melodies you have from floating away into space and instead direct them to your fingers. :-) Thank you for sharing your gift of music and melodies.
Jack Price Ha!! Thanks man!!
This is why we’re here-those sweet melodies! Thanks for this GT!
mindfield7 thanks man!!
Guthrie, frankly, these two triad lessons are probably the most helpful I've seen in a long time. I've known about the CAGED system before it was called that and know that basically there are triads for everything in a specific key right around it on the fretboard, G in this example. Problem is in my head I always default to scales over chord tones, which is the difference. I need to start using my looper to create simple chord progressions to get this kind of lead playing down, instead of messing around with songs I've been soloing over forever.
Love the videos (and the hats!). I remember listening to you with Dave Leather at Jus' Gumbo in Fairhope so many times. I remember the night Dave said that he had a message from the Lord and that the Lord was going to take you home unless we filled the tip jar! Great times!
Frank Stabler wow! The old days! Thanks man!!
That was pretty funny that night. You looked so embarrassed!
Explained simply and articulately
MCKENDRICK MUSIC Thanks man!!
you play so nice, even when you don't try its pretty. i learned so much watching you play that last solo
The Best on UA-cam, period. Thanks GT
Dr Gonzo wow. Thanks man!!!
Sooo many instructors out there. You are different. I like your style. Learn a lot.
Brett Devenney thanks man!
Got to say, I love your series of video! Man, thank you!
Lovely to hear you play with all that feeling Guthrie.
Paul Billingham thanks man!!
Thanks G. We have to ride the wave we're given, unless we're good enough to create our own. You know what I'm talking about. I'm still having the odd wipe out, but when you have had a taste, there is no giving up. @@guthrietrappmusic
more more more guthrie! you're knowledge is pure water of the mont fuji
Alf C Thanks man!!
Loved it. Through repetition I'm slowly understanding triads and seeing chord shapes which you consistently stress.
monkeypawism thanks a bunch man!
Master of simplicity and genius in guitar playing.
Huge thanks and respect
Some amazing playing at 20:20. Brilliant, mate!
Mike de Jong Thanks man!!
I’m a one scale legend so this has helped me a lot g man. Thanks 🙏
Norrie Paton Thanks man!!
亲爱的亨利 I just have too much Fun and a bit old school. I taken lessons as a kid from 5- 12 and had a really cool bond with my teacher but he left to study law cry 😭 🎻 😎 I had 10 year break and just going back to basics. I was just young and wanted to play hendrix and Eric Clapton. I’ll get there now I’m more mature (supposedly 😎)
Thanks for the videos Guthrie. Knocking out the content as you are is way more important to me at least than fancy production
Mike thanks man!! It’ll get better
@@guthrietrappmusic Production quality is perfectly good for what you're aiming for! Your lessons are 100% about outstanding teaching and great content. There's far too much fancy produced bullshit on youtube.
Another great lesson to look back on building the triads and how they all fit together. Nothing beats spending time and working on the traids all over the neck. At least for me. Thanks again for breaking this all down.
Your personality is so down to earth, and you make it seem simple - the key is
to memorize the chord shapes and get really fluent with them in each position up the neck, I can see this coming together nicely once that becomes second nature- thank you for laying it out clearly and simply- Beautiful man!
batstube thanks so much man!!
I can't say thank you enough because these are great lessons. Please continue making these videos. I've been taking lessons for about three years now and these videos are very cool to watch. Cheers!
I found for myself very helpful to use a looper pedal for working on these lessons.
Anyway many thanks, mr. Trapp! That's exactly what I needed. Please, keep going on.
Victor Vi thanks a bunch!!
Your improvisation is so fluid! It's the perfect compliment to this tutorial.
James Robinson thanks man!!
Wow! Guthrie you are such an amazing player. Thank you for sharing your gift with the rest of us.
Daron Hickman Thanks man!!
"Hats are my hair-do"!! LOL!
Hey Sir I am happy you are now embracing youtube. I just always see you on other channels doing some improv and ripping some country stuff. I always admired your playing.
ChrisJosh Malubay Thank you !!!
Brilliant -simple and effect in the language of the common man! Rocking
Boom! Fantastic lesson again, Guthrie! Absolutely love all the new content you put out. It's sooo helpful. Your short insta lesson on playing the little wing changes with pentatonics was killer too. Thanks for your passion and dedication to teaching! You're THE man.
Pat P happy to help! Thanks a bunch man!!
that set me off on a non stop two hour jam, thank you
Neil Marsh great! Thanks man!!
14:32: really nice melody
Nobody:
Guthrie: "really nice melody...."
Also Guthrie (modestly): "...maybe..."
I wish I learned this in the beginning! Mind Blowing it only took me 25 years to find this??? My chords will never be the same! lol
I found you first on Papastache’s channel about a year ago and have steadily applied your concepts. I’m now able to jam with other musicians competently. Appreciate you
askmehow702 awesome man!! Thanks a bunch!!
I'm really liking this approach of soloing which is rooted in chords rather than scales. It makes a lot of sense once you can visualize the chord shapes instead of scale boxes on the fretboard. Thanks a lot for breaking it down to such super noob level!
You are seriously a saint
jordan74 thanks man!!
This lesson has upped my game by 30%! Great lesson appreciate it!
modes no modes. a few of your videos and after 2 yrs of trying to put things together now i see how they all fit. thanks Again
george witsil Thanks man!!
Man I'm watching all these videos!
I now know why learning the caged system is very functional. it gives you the Triad shapes. Alas I learned the modes first then memorized the Triad shapes independently! I'm here to learn how to se the Triad to make musical runs. Great vid for that!!
Some of your "off the cuff remarks" Guthrie are so key to understanding your point. For example you said at the end that the note you end on in your phrasing highlights the chord your working with. This is a key point in making a melody work with a chord progression. What is trivial to you and assumed by those that are fluent in the execution of a piece is most important to those learning the concepts and delivery structure of music. You know so much Guthrie by being at the coal face of playing music for so long that you under estimate what you have learnt and know........ :-)
Fantastic lesson. Thank you Guthrie 💯👍
Guthrie I am so amazed at your playing talents, You definitely have a gift,. Did I see you playing left handed also? We are planning a trip to Nashville to see our granddaughter. Hope to find you playing someplace. I am 78 yrs old and love playing. Thanks for all your help.
Awesome!
When he said “that was just a terrible example”, i was like, “Trust me, you are doing fine” 😂😂😂
Another great lesson. Between these UA-cam videos and your artist work stuff you have helped get me out of the dreaded pentatonic wanking rut I have been in I’ve been stuck in. My favourite video teacher out there! Thanks for what you do! Finally understanding playing the changes.
13sadowsky great man!! Happy to help! Thanks.
Guthrie! Love your stuff man. You are a great teacher. As a music teacher myself to grades k-6, I will do my best to create the next generation of Guthrie's. Keep ripping brother.
gilbertrockstv thanks a bunch man!!
@@guthrietrappmusic my pleasure my brother. Us musicians gotta stick together and lift each other up. Gotta show you my animated kid's tv show sometime . It's all about inspiring them to go into the garage in create the next wave of great bands. Man, we need more bands. lol. Happy Easter brother!
Great stuff thanks!
Guthrie...your lessons are very insightful. The way you explain is easy to understand...love it.
Jacob Varghese Thanks man!!
Great lesson Guthrie. We are so fortunate to have access to these lessons from a world class player.
David Goltra Thanks a bunch man!!
So Great!!!! Thanks
Cheers !
Hey Guthrie, thx a lot for these great vids, they are super helpful. Just putting it out there - I’d happily kick in a few bucks a month to support these if you set up a Patreon, and I’m sure a few others would as well. 👍😃
Greg Taylor Thanks a bunch man!! How do I link UA-cam and Patreon together??
Guthrie Trapp Hey man, I think most people just include a link to their Patreon page in the description, and give it a mention during the video for those who want to chip in. You could also do a higher tier Patreon amount with exclusive access to a UA-cam Live teaching session or something, but I’m sure plenty of ppl would just happily chop in to support what you’re already doing.
Well done. Thanks
Great lesson. Thanks.
That is killer! wow!
I started following you a month back. I follow every video of yours and learning a lot. Thank you so much. :)
Sabbir Hasan Thanks man!!
Man this s great stuff Ty for this , looking for more man!!
Great lessons .
Cheers Gathrie !!!
This is gold, thanks man!!
Great video
Your humility is refreshing! It looks like you threw in some diagonal arpeggios in the last piece. Paul Davids did a lesson on diagonal arpeggios on his page....I’d love to see how you’d approach teaching those.
btlisenby thanks man!! I’m not sure what those are.
Thank You
Excellent video Guthrie.
Eh Guthrie, i've been playing for about 25 years and you sharing your knowledge is really helping me shed light on some mysteries that have puzzeled me for many years. I feel privileged to have you as a mentor. Keep it comming what your doing is amazing. So much good info ,i'm hooked!
Santé! From Montréal, Canada
Fantastic!!
RedistaNashville Thanks !!
What a delicious lesson. All the sweet stuff and so close to home
Skillful!!!
Thanks GT! 🤠🍻
Incredible stuff!! Please educate us more!!
What a supper lesson...thanks so much..
Sir, great lesson and great hat! Thanks 😍
Awesome lesson. I've got my shapes, I've been focusing on where the 1 is in the triad and taking each position, "shape, scale, Arpeggio" and dropping the 1 down to make a dominant, and then mixolydian. Once again, perfect video. Thank you.
Lance Cluff thanks so much man!!
he's my inspiration he's great lesson !
really nice man, thanks a lot! and yes very nice hat
you are the best. Thank you for generosity
Hey Guthrie, thanks so much for this lesson series! You are right on the mark, at least for me. Your teaching style is nice and laid back and really easy to follow. I feel like you give a good amount of information in each lesson without it being too much which works great for me. I've understood the concept of the CAGED system, chord tones etc. for a while but your lessons are actually making it make sense with real playable examples. I hope you keep them coming, thanks again!
Gregg Charbonneau great man!! Thanks so much.
Man, killin it with all these lessons coming out!
Joe Ray Thanks !
I am enjoying and learning a lot from your videos.!
Love and grateful for these lessons Guthrie! We’re all extremely lucky you’re willing to share this information with us.
