  • Enjoying your ND Mazda MX-5 Miata, but not loving it? You've heard the saying, "Miata is always the answer!", but not truly feeling the connection with the ND (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022) Miata? You're not alone. After 3yrs of long-term Miata ownership, I've enjoyed my time with one of our two project cars, the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, but it hasn't been without its faults. In this video, I'll go through the PROs (what I like about the Miata), and CONs (what I don't like about the Miata), and the reason why I've sold our ND Mazda MX-5 Miata RF! Don't worry, we're looking to replace the Miata with another fun, "driver's" sports car - if you're interested in find out what cars made the list... the MKV Toyota GR Supra, the new Toyota GR Corolla (GR Yaris), the BMW M240 (BMW M2, maybe), and...

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m an ND GT owner, car is a few months old.It’s the soft-top. I don’t particularly find it noisy, even at highway speeds, and let’s face it why would you go on a highway ? Back roads in the Miata are way more fun. Yes, the seats take some getting used to, they are actually almost hollow, not fully upholstered like a typical car. You can buy a small lumbar support device like many people have on their office chairs, I know someone who has a rolled up towel as back support if they are going on a long drive. The hollow seats are designed to save weight. I’d like to disagree with you about trunk space. My wife and I have been on a two week interstate road-trip in the Miata. The trick is to take soft luggage, not a hard suitcase, and we were surprised how much we can take. The trunk has a narrow opening, but is deep and wide. If you look online you can even buy specifically designed Miata luggage a 3 piece set that fits perfectly. Regarding the ‘transmission failure’, this was mainly on cars that drivers took on track-days and revved the hell out of them. It was a super rare issue if you drove the car normally. I love the car, it’s my second Miata, had the original NA back in the day, and looking forward to many more miles and smiles in it.

    I rented this exact model for 2 weeks. Loved every moment of it. funnest car I've ever driven. MPG was awesome and you can get the back end loose without feeling out of control. Drove 6 hours on the highway with no complaints. Seats were fine. a little wind noise, but not too bad. Trunk space was fine for my use. For me when I consider the fun, reliability, low maintenance, cheap consumables and great mpg - this is the most fun per dollar of any car on the road.

    Do you drive it top down on the freeway or something? I only drive my RF with top closed on the freeway, and it’s pretty quiet. However I added sound deadening throughout which was well worth it (cheap) and surprised you didn’t try that. But yeah overall it’s noisier than most modern cars.
    Personally the leather seats I have in the RF haven’t bothered me at all. Pretty comfy.
    As you’ve probably found.. most cars that beat the Miata are significantly pricier and often don’t have manual shift , but will be interested what you choose

    I just ordered a 2024 (with the new improvements, making it an ND3, and here are my answers for all of your complaints (thanks for sharing them btw):
    1. Noise - had two 124 Spiders, never heard any noises apart from my Karceps sway bars (just spray with silicon lube and it’s gone for a few months). You also have an RF which is heavier, slower and has a lot more wind buffeting than the standard softop.
    2. Mechanical looseness - I have a 2022 Camaro ZL1 and for example the door feels a lot more “well-built” and solid compared to the Miata. I believe this is simply due to the efforts of making it lightweight. It weighs 1,700 less than my convertible ZL1 and it’s not meant to be a daily driver. So, I’m fine with it.
    3. Small - I’m 5’8 on a good day. It wouldn’t be a daily driver. Less space = more lightweight = more fun.
    4. Seats - The GT ones I did not like. Felt like they done in between my back. The Recaros however are perfectly fine! So, no problem at all there.
    5. Speed/power - fair argument, I have a ZL1 with 650 horses STOCK. However, I can barely floor it even on sunny Texas weather and good tires. Too much power. Cops and speed limits exist. I want something I can floor all day long, without getting into too much trouble - something I feel I can maximize.
    6. Tranny - The 124 Spiders came with the NC tranny, but it was also a lot more rubbery than the ND2 one I tested. I believe they also improved the tranny for ND2 compared to ND1. I love the feel of the transmission, even compared to my ZL1 one.
    So that’s it! I want something to track (with peace of mind that comes from a lower price and not absurd amounts of power) but also maximize on the street and in the canyons. I might find the ND3 too slow, but for now the ZL1 is way too fast haha.
    We shall see :)

    One thing's certain, its never been more difficult - these dealers will not negotiate because they know someone will gladly take our place and pay too much if we (or I) back out. The economy is tanking - maybe "patience" is the ultimate key when dealers no longer have the upper hand and can sell cars as easily as they are doing today (many with up to 1 year waiting times). . .I love your way and style of presenting videos. You are a natural at it and I will continue to stay tuned for the new vehicle you choose to fill your garage. Your MX-5 videos have been an enormous help - thanks so much for doing them.

    LOL, I am now on my 4th Miata but sold past three with the same reasons. I got used to the noise with HTs on NA/NB and PRHT with NC but one thing that bothered me the most was storage capacity prevented me from taking the Miata on a longer trips or activities. but at the end, many like myself come back again and again and it's an affection for one of a kind vehicle and plain simple and fun to drive. I have owned many open tops from all premium brands including a Mustang but nothing is more memorable than a Miata ownership and all the owners of the Miatas are unique people too.

      Agree , but my 2016 Club soft top is my 1st Miata / 1st convertible / 1st Mazda owned. I don't find my cloth seats lacking lumbar support but I keep the seatback straight up. Many drives over 3 hours without a break. Its a daily driver in 4 season weather so its almost time for the switch over. Also love the fact its very easy to do much of the maintenance myself ! Including the wheel / tire changes for the seasons. Cost factor to own is unparalleled ! After market parts have a wide selection plus cost is low. Storage space was known going into this car. I consider the lightweight & smallness an advantage not a drawback. My car is Artic White & always have the headlights on so its hard NOT to see me.

    I currently own an ND RF and I LOVE it! I don't drive it as much as I should but it's an excellent toy / 3rd car and it is irreplaceable if you value that type of driving experience. I agree with your MX5 car alternatives, if ever I would upgrade myself I would highly consider the Toyota GR Supra and M2. As much as I love the manual transmission, the automatic transmissions has grown so much that it adds to the experience. If I would have more budget, I would also look at the Porsche Cayman GTS. I just bought a 2022 ND club with performance package and have a little less than 2,000 miles on it. The recaro seats are excellent for lumbar support but a little narrow around the hip area so if you are not too big then you can take 2 to 3 hours of continuous driving( which I just did). I’m about 6 feet and 185 pounds and I fit great but this car is not for tall/large frame people, you must test it before buying. My last two second cars were BMW 3 series convertibles with the last being the excellent 335is. I already miss that car but I still love this one. The Germans know how to make sporty mixed with luxury but then you really pay for that. I always loved cars and loved driving but I never judge people for flipping cars or having opinions, we are lucky people to have choices, there are millions who can’t even find food

    I totally agree and sympathize with you although some of my reasons are different: 1. Main reason I sold mine was - cheap feeling interior. I couldn't get over the cheap feeling carpets, cheap plastics used for the interior, especially the ones around the centre console where you can put your hand through the wide gaps. I actually liked the stock seats 😊. 2 - the lack of space/storage. The car has only space for a weekend or to be used as a track car/ fun car. This means is can't be your only car. That was a massive issue for me as I mainly wanted to use the car for roadtrips around Europe. The car doesn't have enough space for 2 as stated in the video. I've done 2 long roadtrips in Europe and both me and my passenger suffered because the lack of space. 3 - too noisy high-speeds with top up or down. While I was ok initially, the road noise started to get to me in last year of ownership ( 2y total). The noise in the car was so loud you have to shout to carry a normal conversation. 4 - got too expensive. Not reason why I sold it but , not great for first owners. When I bought my first ND Miata in 2016 I paid 24k £ in UK for the top trim. Now the top trim is 34K and it got heavier. For a fun car for the weekend/ track is quite an expensive toy, especially considering it can't be your only vehicle ( not for me at least). I really wanted to love the car, it has some fantastic features and offers an amazing driving experience in some ways but in others imho, it failed to deliver so I had to let it go. PS Additionally, I was very disappointed also with the high repair cost to replace the roof. My soft top has been slashed and they quoted me £1500 for the repair😢. That was the final straw for me. Overall it's a great driver's car but it's just not good enough for me to be the only car. Because of high taxes in the UK I don't want to own 2.

    Wow, some ppl here are really salty.
    Coincidentally, I have a white 2018 2.0 Accord Sport, and just got a 2022 MX-5 club a month ago. A lot of ppl dislike the stock seats, but they're one of my favorite things about the interior. I'm about 5'11 175 lbs, and another passenger who is much shorter and stockier also found them to be comfortable, although I think your egg seat analogy was accurate.
    To me it's a fun 2nd car only, and despite how much I like it, even if I was single I could never use a Miata as a daily.

      @TheLemonFactor  2 роки тому

      There’s always a little “salt” in the recipe 🤷‍♂️😂. Nice choice of cars 😎. I think the seats also bothered me more with it being a manual transmission, as it forced my legs in a position to work the clutch pedal. If it was auto, I would have been able to shift my leg position.

    The reasons for selling are totally understandable. My ND is a 3rd car, so I can live with a lot of the compromises and “enjoy” more of a raw sports car. new tires + suspension + FM ish spec alignment made it much much quieter road noise wise. I still plan on slapping some sound deadening on the wheel wells, behind the seats, on the floor pan, trunk, and possibly the doors.
    Anyway, I’d really like to see a GR86 on the channel. They interest me quite a bit. If I didn’t want a convertible, I’d have one. I think it will respond very well to the types of mods that you do and provide a lot of content. It pretty much lands in the middle of performance of Miata and boxster out of the box

    I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on driving fun, playfulness and excitement between the 718 and ND. I've been debating an ND vs a 981 / 718 Boxster for a long time. It's a shame there's been so little progress with ND2 supercharging / turbo. I know BBR do a super 220 kit that revs to 8000 and does 0-60 in a little over 5 seconds. I don't know if that's enough of a difference to feel? I've really enjoyed me test drives in the ND. I am concerned about the transmission though and I do think it could use a bit more power and definitely more body control. Between nicer wheels, new breaks, new exhaust, forced induction / tuning, suspension you could easily burn £10,000 extra on the MX-5. Then it becomes the price of a base Boxster. The things that have annoyed me when looking around to buy one is the lack of paint quality / durability and the lack of leather quality / durability. They also became stupidly more expensive in the past few years - about £5000-£6000 more!

    • @love2huntbooks2
      @love2huntbooks2 Рік тому +1

      You are stealing pretty much every thought I've had about the Miata and how I also started considering a 981 boxster s but everything is so pricey that I just gave up. Now I'm considering a used 230i convertible (F30). Ample tunes and mods available and it's half the price of a used 981 boxster. That zf transmission is super fast, you get tiny seats to put a car seat or some jackets in the back. It ain't no mid-engine beauty like a boxster but given the market conditions, it'll have to do.

    • @TheLemonFactor
      @TheLemonFactor  Рік тому

      That would be a whole other video! The two cars, are very different. The Porsche is a precision machine, which most people will never use 8/10 of its capabilities. There's not much you can, or rather should do to change it... chances are if you do, you'll ruin the car - it's that near to being perfect! The Miata, is fun, and dynamic tossable, and modifications will change it's behavior / dynamics to suit the owner.

    • @love2huntbooks2
      @love2huntbooks2 Рік тому +1

      @@TheLemonFactor Hey Chad, I should've clarified, that response was meant for the commenter - Made In Machines. Boxster's are lovely and don't need a lot of modification to make it a true daily driver, but they're all overpriced right now. Which is why I was recommending the 230i convertible, as you can still modify it (quite the aftermarket support) and still have fun.
      Let me start off by saying that I am REALLY happy that someone felt the same way I did about the Miata and more importantly, said it out loud in a forum. Again, the car itself isn't at fault but it's a combination of factors a big portion of it is ourselves (seeking comfort over sportiness, etc). I've enjoyed a lot of your Miata videos, and have always weighed the effort and expenses to the power/speed increase, and to me, it didn't make sense. There's finally superchargers on the horizon (from FAB9 and Edelbrock) but we never know if and when it'll be fully baked in, may take a year from now. I'll post a more detailed comment shortly as to why I am considering selling mine.

All the shortcomings I accept, since my purpose for the Miata is to have fun....for me, the noise and lack of creature comforts adds to the joy of driving this somewhat unrefined street legal go-cart. I too have a 2019 Miata, bought new. Mine is the base model Sport with the convertible top and manual 6-speed. Like you I’m 3.5 years into ownership. It’s parked underground with a dust cover. At 18k miles it’s cherry. I could sell it for close to what I paid for it.
    That RF targa top when up is only a couple dB quieter than the convertible top. When down, the rear bolsters cause serious buffeting at highway speeds. On the freeway with top up I use noise cancelling earbuds wirelessly linked to my iPhone, so I can listen to podcasts and Google Maps directions and still hear what’s going on around me, with wind and road noise greatly reduced.
    My car has no “mechanical looseness.” There is some cowl shake over bumps because it’s a convertible. At 5’10” I’m right-sized for the car. Six-footers would find it tight.
    You’re right, other drivers can miss you in traffic, especially pickups and SUVs. I never drive in somebody’s blind spot, and in traffic am vigilant about encroaching vehicles.
    The Miata’s trunk is not large but is a very usable boxy space. I can get a week’s groceries into it. If traveling there’s room for all my stuff. If going two-up you have to pack carefully. It’s a sports car!
    True, there’s not much lumbar support in the stock seats. I fixed that with a $25 lumbar support cushion, black so it is nearly invisible.
    The ND2 generation Miata gets to 60 in under 6 seconds and tops 130 mph. If that isn’t fast enough for you on public roads, maybe your driving is putting others at risk.
    The ND2 engine is hot-rodded from the factory, which is how it gained 21 hp over its predecessor. Emission tests (here in California) will catch a forced induction system and void registration renewal.
    Yep, the Supra sounds like just the right car for you. Happy trails.

    Hey, thank you for an honest long term review that actually helps me more then 1 week journalist ownerships... I myself am looking to buy a new MX 5, my very first rear wheel drive car. Reasons why, is that i love the looks, it will not kill me like the 'tame' 2l Supra in every day use and i am kinda tired of everybody taking advantage of me and nothing screams F Off like a 2 seater with no space 😏 and i already did a test drive with it so i know it is a lil epic car, even seeing the hood made me think i was driving a Jaguar E type, the dash and that cocoon feeling made me feel special, i loved it! The only thing i hated was my struggle with the best shifter i have ever experienced because of an old accident i need automatic i struggle to much with a bad foot. BUT the seats yeah, they suck! So for a daily driver is a MX 5 automatic something that i will regre you think? It is hard to find decent reviews for automatics.. My alternative is a Cupra Leon but that is ofc not a sports car... This vid is very useful - thank you very much! Years ago, I made the same experience (i.e. not to be respected in the traffic because of the smallness of the car) with the little city-fun-car named StreetKa made by Ford, coloured in silver. (A red one perhaps would have gotten more attention and respect by other drivers I suppose.) Anyway, everyone passing by was looking at that car and none of them without smiling! 😏
    Now, I think about buying a Miata ND (Convertible or RF) for everyday-driving. Besides the decision necessary to made between soft- and hardtop I still do not have many experiences with rear-wheel driven cars. Thus, what does it mean and how does it feel to drive the MX-5 on rainy days on slippery roads? I myself (a woman) do not have the need to slide through curves. To be honest, I'm afraid that might happen although I do not want it to. Concerning this point, which model of the MX-5 would be the "safest" one? Is there a smaller probability that this will happen with a car less powerful or is power (PS) out of concern to this fact? Apart from that, what are your experiences with parking the MX-5 outside? Hello, Thanks for answering. . .I'm in a difficult situation. I have a $500.00 hold (deposit) on a 2022 Soft top Club (allocation in transit). It's only one in maybe five blue ones still left in the country and only one left in my state. However, here comes the "but" - the dealership wants $5K over MSRP and is selling the car for $37K. It's a base soft top Club with cloth seats. If I don't take the car, I will have to wait well in to next year before any blues arrive in my area. Tough dilemma. I really feel as if I'm being ripped off. Then again, Mazda may not even bring back the blue color next year, plus there are all of the chip and supply issues, etc.. What do you think? Should I take it while I can even at $5 over MSRP?

    • @TheLemonFactor
      @TheLemonFactor  Рік тому +2

      That is a difficult situation. Only you can decide if the $5k markup is worth it. There's also an option to buy somewhere else and either drive the car back, or have it shipped, which either option should cost less than the $5k assuming you buy the car at MSRP. Like you said, you could also wait, which may give you time to also see if the car market cools off a bit. Have you considered buying used?

I checked nationwide - some dealers will not sell out of state, others were marked up even higher than what I am paying here, and the rest were already sold (still advertised with deposit holds) - no luck for me nationwide; remember it's got to be "blue" only which happens to be my biggest issue. . .I love your ideas though. . .

I’ve owned half dozen BMWs (most recently an m235 w manual) and the car prior to my ‘21 Club was a 981 boxster s. None of them provided the flingability of this car. My gr86 does, but even the 981 boxster felt portly next to the Miata. I’d gladly trade brute power for the level of engagement that typically only comes with a light car. Fortunately for me, I don’t share any of your gripes. It’s a second car for me for a reason.

    Sounds like you need to research your vehicles much further in depth prior to purchase. The Miata isn’t for everyone, no - but some of your concerns seem... ill researched or thought out, imo. The trunk should be “fine” for most backpack weekends for two people. Not sure what kind of stuff you’re trying to pack for a quick 1-3 day trip? The car is low powered, but that pairs with the low weight. You did some mods too, so I am surprised it still wasn’t that enjoyable for you. As an RF owner as well, I don’t typically go 85+ with the top down - seems.. fairly dangerous, but no wonder you may be getting wind buffeting. To that point, you may want to really research the Supra before potentially purchasing - they have big issues with wind buffeting from just having the windows down, as well as pretty rough ingress/egress, perhaps worse than a Miata. As for the trans, you had an ND2 - which is considered to be the better and more refined transmission, so not sure where the paranoia is for having it blow. That said, 2 things to that point - 1. They aren’t that expensive to replace, at all. Last I checked, its “only” $1200 for a new one. 2. The ND2 has the better trans than the ND1, but even then, I don’t know too many people who blew the ND1 by now, but yes, I know it does happen. To me, it sounds like you really need to explore a Boxster or a Cayman - it will hit most of your concerns - luxury, quiet, cargo room, and more power. The M series mini cars seem... to be only good in a straight line, and I truly think you would need to fully explore the negatives of the Supra. May want to consider a new Nissan Z as well. As someone else suggested, it sounds like the Miata just simply isn’t a good fit for you, and that’s OK! But most of your concerns could have been flushed out with more research, or in the case of the top down wind noise, not sure that’s safe to begin with for extended periods of time, and that’s coming from someone who does autox and track days. Best of luck with the next one, but I think you would really love a P-Car!

    Gonna miss the videos for it, but I could tell you felt defeated by it or at least that's how it seemed. Hondas/ Toyotas, and the rest of the car market has much higher power potential- and that's fair, the miata is a momentum car, not meant to be a Supra fighter or etc etc.
    But good luck man, and if you get a Z or something close too then awesome!

Personally I'm going to finish paying it off (I'm close) and then explore some of the other options you discussed. Supra sounds rad! Its a Miata, you kind of know what it is and what you sacrifice to drive it, Besides the seats, the rest of the criticism are like "well of course, what did you expect." And definitely understand the speed criticism but honestly, its not slow but its a momentum car, not meant to be fast, just being able to maintain the speed while cornering better than any other car on the road. As for you're next car, I really hope you can get a GR Corolla if you're interested, interested the channel would sky rocket

    I got an ND2 soft top recently, and all of your criticisms are either things that don't apply to me, things I don't think are so bad, or things I'd outright disagree with. Which is fine; we want different things out of our cars, but primarily, I think that the only way you can be happy is either with a more expensive car, or one that can't put its top down.
    Miata is always the answer because what you get for what it costs, pound for pound, beats everything else on the market. And anywhere you can do better, you only do better in exchange for a relative shortcoming somewhere else.
    The "too small for other drivers to see" issue goes away if you drive like you're riding a motorcycle. Luckily, I have a motorcycle endorsement!

    The Miata isn't for everyone. The "space" issue is not a lie. Do not joke with yourself here. Yes there are custom soft bags (I own them) yes you can fit more than people think and no golf clubs (plural) don't fit. Yes with some cutting and stripping you can cram 1 bag in but it's unnerving. Let this one go he is right it's not a large car or large trunk. I went from a very powerful Mustang GT and a club racer of a Mini JCW Clubman pushing 100hp more than an ND2. I am fine with the changes I made and the power I got out of the Miata 172hp 162ft/lbs and 7250rpm+ out of my ND1 feels amazing. Is it like my old cars? No, but it's great and is enough to make me happy. Chad here it wasn't enough. You know what? That's ok. Go get a slightly used 2016 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T manual and mod the crap out of it and haul all your stuff around. Make yourself happy. Buy not just what you want but what you need. I have fixed every gripe with my ND1 except the golf club situation. I am actually almost done with that fix. There is a luggage trunk rack that comes with 2 external golf bag cases. Crazy right? But honesty here. Chad needs to do what's best for Chad.

    Chad,
    Sorry to see your no longer driving a Miata. I have enjoyed some of your videos and hoped to see more but I'm not like some of these other Miata owners. If you don't feel it's for you anymore, then so be it.
    Isn't it funny how, when you were making the videos and talking about your experiences, some of these people just loved you. Then you decide you no longer like the car, how they quickly crap on you. Kind of childish and silly in my book.
    Any way.... I am curious about why you didn't consider a newer MX-5. I drive a 2021 ND2 RF GT and it has more power from the factory then the 2019 did and you can get a newer MX-5 with Recaro Seats. From what I hear, while the 2023 and 2024 don't have more power than my year model, they do have other refinements with regard to traction control and steering refinements. While this doesn't address all your issues, it is an improvement to some of them. If the decision was really more about the power limitation, I get it. Most of the other issues were just added fodder.
    The one issue I can agree on is the slight trunk space and storage provided. For me it isn't huge problem because I seldom travel with a passenger, and I drive this more like a daily driver most of the time. There have been a few times when I've needed a little more space like when I was taking my side skirts and the front spoiler for to be painted and then mounted. For the most part I just plan accordingly when it comes to that sort of stuff. As you stated in your video, it really is about the driving experience for these cars. Most of us live with the lack of power even if we secretly wish for more, but we understand they are not made for all out speed. Quickness and agility in cornering is what we have a thirst for, and these cars excel in that even with the lack of power. I guess I'm saying I understand your issue with the lack of power, but respectfully disagree that it is an issue with regard to how it is a flaw in the car as it is designed. It really isn't designed to be a powerhouse as you know. The fun is in handling. As a ridge runner and canyon carver it's more than powerful enough to make you pucker. I always smile as I dart around a corner and lean into the roller-coaster ride I'm enjoying. Straight line and interstate dashing are not my thing. That's a different kind of fun and requires a different kind of power. So, if that's more to your liking I'm sure you new car will be better for you. Have fun either way that what it all boils down to.

Just to point out a couple things... the car has a fully stock exhaust. No, the tune does not make your car louder. The mechanical noises made from this car have been there from the start, don't blame any of the suspension changes. The Miata is a great car, but not a perfect car, and certainly not for everyone. I believe people should be fully aware of both the good and bad, so that they can make a decision for themselves, and that's what I've attempted to do with all my videos. Why it seems that some Miata owners can't take constructive criticism and accept that the Miata is not for everyone is beyond me.
