The Worst Flaw of the ND Mazda Miata.

- New uploads Monday,Wednesday, and Saturdays! For this in depth look at the ND Mazda Miata, myself and it's owner Alex talk about his ownership experience and one particular problem that I was actually shocked about. The ND Miata during one of it's production years has a transmission issue that will send you back to the dealership multiple times. That said the issue has since been fixed, and the ND is still an incredible car to drive! Alex put his ND Miata on E85, and has a Flyin' Miata exhaust system. Thanks for watching!

Don't blame him for how fun it is to drive. Have a great day everyone!
ThatDudeinBlue good
I bought his stock GT wheels last summer :)
so why are you so ob-thethed with the miata? trololol
The wheels he picked look perfect for the car and color.
ThatDudeinBlue I would actually love to have one of those cars because they are so much fun! And they're meant for not only enjoying the ride, but long distances to. It's stylish and kind of sporty, they handle awesome, its great for going out and having a good time and sounds good to👍
No new transmission since this video was filmed! Still loving the Car! Supercharger will be coming soon!

Damn, now I wanna see that
Are you on Miata.net?
hipposnakeyo yep! Alxr19
How much power u making on e85 with headers and exhaust?
He looks nervous as hell whenever you get on the gas. He keeps looking over at the Tach nervously lol.
Jaymie 5.0 Yeah he was messing me up because I stopped paying attention trying to figure out why he kept looking over.
I mean, someone else is driving his car. Not everyone is comfortable with that

For all of you surprised that Alex is looking at the Tach the whole time i guess you did not notice the car is his, i do the same thing with my Miata, its my baby nobody revs it but me
I saw miata in the title so I clicked
Jeremy Rohm I'm a simple man
Haha, same here :D Mine's an NC tho.

I own a miata and i love this video and i love your comment❤️
I bought A new one in with manual transmission 2019 and I’m 72 . Always had a love for small cars my first car was a 1972 MGB I bought it new $3,300.00 .Great video guys nicely done good conversation thanks.
Stay in good health
It looks líke he never accelerates his own miata, everytime you accelerate he looks at the speedometer
jose daniel lara perez same, I realized that lol
I feel i've done the same thing a few times before, and I definitely do my fair share of accelerating. It's more of a curiosity thing, most people don't get to sit in the passenger of their own car with someone else accelerating, and most people nowadays can't drive manuals or wouldn't be pushing it hard, so he's probably just being attentive, I sure as hell would be with my own car being driven by someone else.
Matt Stone Miatas are meant to be revved. I tell people to shift at 3000 to 3500 in my NB for less buckle and the car doesn’t like being in a low rev range (but I do usually coast at 2000-2500 if I’m not in 5th). Not sure about the ND, though I’m sure it’s not much different.
To be fair, it's different in the passenger seat. I don't mind it when drivers beat on my car, provided they don't wreck, but at the same time the sensation of speed is so different when you aren't the one controlling the car.
Lol check out "the smoking tire" all those dude's who let Matt drive their car do that
Finally, somebody with a proper exhaust....I know the pops and extras are in right now, but an exhaust is supposed to exhaust. I prefer the constant tone and this one does the trick.
Do you know what exhaust is?
He's checking that rev limiter lol
Keep em coming manI didn't even realize that there were actual UA-cam channels like this until a couple months ago(and I'm 26, I know I guess I live under a rock lol) and your definitely one of my favorite channels, top 3 for sure man! Your just a genuinely good dude!
Jason Natsis beauty of the car scene, you are never too late to the party.
First car is a 2007 Gray 5 speed Miata, I still have it and I still love it!
Having the proper exhaust is worth the hassle of going through a few of them; until you are happy. I love the new Miatas more than any previous generation. The car just looks fresh, fun and properly sized for maximum pleasure. I find them a bit overpriced but once they hit the used market at a reasonable price I might end up owning one.
We think alike. I was looking for an off-lease ND but discovered that this close to the end of the model year (September), Mazda are blowing out the base 2019 Sport model. I got one for well under $25 brand new and with 1.5% financing. I don’t need the Brembo/Recaro bling and the 2019 has WAY more power than the car in this vid. And, my Sport looks badass in black.
Also keep in mind the _Fiat_ 124 for even cheaper used prices. Built in the sane factory, main diff is styling & the fiat engine, which has better torque thru the acceleration, but I wonder how dependable is the engine? I have no clue.
you're right about the price. I paid 29k for my 2019. definitely worth it though lmao
The problem is trying to sell the old ones, especially when you pay 500-1500 a pop, some people find it harder to locate a buyer.
I just watched a lot of your older videos and I gotta say... I loved the production quality of those so much better. Like watching the series where you went to Hawaii and talked about the hidden car culture was amazing IMO
My '16 Sport has 43,000 miles, original transmission, no issues. I bought it in October 2015 before anyone had heard of issues. But mine is not driven hard, just enjoyed as a car that is in it's element on the curvy two lanes of New Hampshire. Probably helps that I'm 72 and have gotten all that boy racer stuff out of my system a long time ago. I've heard that few cars driven the way I do will have problems.
Thanks Alex for the info on the transmission. Didn't know about that, but glad it's been fixed.

Im a simple man, I see a miata video, I like it.
I see quite a few 2016 ND's with low mileage and cheap. Very fine car. Well done video guys. I drive a 2001 Miata NB. It has original stock muffler so it really growls along but very solid. Kinda wish I didn't watch your presentation of the 2016. Very sweet sound. Envy! Thanks gent's...
Good video my dude, like always, delivering quality content
Saw the title and immediately thought “Yeah, no pop ups.” /s 💀💀💀

Thank the liberals
Miata popups are gay af square conversion still doesnt do enough justice to make it aggressive looking

@@Halomaster4life1 ik I just wish the lights were a little more aggressive like a 240 or mk3 supra
I've got a 2016 at 60k miles, so far the transmission still feels like the day I drove it off the lot. Keepin' my fingers crossed, lol. Going through 2 transmissions is quite shocking.
I do see a lot of people who drive these shifting as if they have a super fast clutch like a Porsche PDK, and they don't allow the revs to fall each shift, especially going into 2nd gear--not sure if that could be a cause, but I imagine it's rough on the gears.
My 2016 Club xmission lasted for 100K miles before it started making strange noises. My warrantee covered it. Keep that service contract current or put a couple grand away just in case!
Take a drink every time you hear the word "Yeah".
I like this video before I watch. I think I have an addiction. Love the reviews 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

That little miata sounds great in the high rpms
Hey guys, some of you may have seen my posts on the Miata.net forum or Facebook forums. As most of us know, the ND MX-5 version 1 transmissions have had an extremely high failure rate. Many 2016 owners are on their second, third, fifth, transmission. Mazda has been good about replacing these transmissions while under warranty. As the first known owner to have one fail outside of warranty (74k miles), I have been denied replacement of the defective V1 transmission I took care of for so many miles. The replacement has been quoted at $6500 by Cardinaleway Mazda in Phoenix AZ.
Hundreds of MX-5 owners globally are concerned with the fate of their MX-5s as more owners will begin to reach the end of their warranties. I'm calling on all ND owners who are willing to participate, to send an email to customer service, mention how you've read a guy in Phoenix AZ was denied a transmission replacement and you are concerned for yours once outside of warranty. Mazda is denying this as an issues and the more ND owners we have expressing concern the better for future used buyers and current owners out of warranty. Thanks!
MazdaCustomerExperience@mazdausa.com
Mine just exploded 6 months after the warranty expired. I've been offered 60% of the repair cost, and I've called Mazda to get another solution, because there's no way I pay a dime for a new transmission in a car with 18,000Km on it.
US dealers might be better or worse about it, I don't know. The only consolation so far is that I'll get an v4 transmission.
That paint is absolutely amazing. Not in your face, but so many colors within that red
Thanks for the vid! I walked away from a very nice AP2 S2K before I bought my ND. It was more exciting, but buying a new car WITH a warranty and still in production went a long way for me. Plus, I prefer to drive my 2016 ND GT than my friend's 2017 BMW M2 (PE). No transmission problems, but I drive mine gently.

You can also do a foamectomy, where you cut away a little depth from the foam in the seats. or you could just buy and aftermarket seat and fir a 6'10" person.
Wow. I've never ever ever heard a Miata that sounded good. This sounds good; not 'not bad' but actually good.

I appreciate this comment
When he got on the car that dude was scared he looked at the spedometer everytime😂😂
Oh yeah! I just scored a 2018 RF Club with BBS Package with 8,300 miles on it for $10K - $12K less than a new one. Who spends $34,000 - $37,000 and then trades it in that soon? Gotta love 'em!
I just bought a 2021 Miata ND2 RF with 2,000 miles on it. Still in the process of getting it shipped to me and no doubt I am somewhat worried that maybe there was something wrong with it, but it could very well be anything unrelated to the car. Either way, I'm going to inspect the hell out of it when it gets here lol
Love the exhaust sound
Honest conversation about ownership of the MX-5. On paper the performance numbers look way too low for fun to be had, but for that small vehicle, that engine sounds like a hoot. Plus, with the top down, how fast do you really want to go?
Very fast. :D Actually, there's not much difference between 130kph/80mph and 210kph/130mph top down. Biggest change in wind noise and turbulence is between 65kph/40mph and 120kph/75mph, I'd say (at least in the NC).
In that car, I'd probably be driving between 40 - 75mph max and likely enjoying it quite a lot.
It's enjoyable at those speeds, too, yes, but why limit yourself (at least when you're in a country with higher speed limits ;) ).
Although it's true, it IS more fun on winding country roads at 60mph than it is on the Autobahn at 130. That's just not it's natural habitat. Although even just with coilovers and good tires, it rides MUCH more stable at high speeds, making it feel a lot more at home there.
Will own one of these someday soon. Just gorgeous and drive like a dream.
I test drove a 2017 Club sport and loved it. I plan on adding one to the garage one day.
Weird, I actually just bought a 2016 Club softop that was lightly used (2700 miles). The transmission is already feeling a bit abnormal, so I'm hoping the dealership won't give me much trouble in replacing it.
In any case, I've been loving driving it. Very excited about modifying it to be even more fun.
Mazda has been great to me about service! the car has a header and tune and they have still replaced the transmission! Have fun!
Alex Robinett I actually experienced their great service today. I dropped off my Miata for them to refinish I wheel I foolishly curbed, and they gave me an RF (with a manual) as a loaner. Also told them to check to see if the transmission has any issues, so we'll see how that goes.
The paper thin paint. The panel behind my 2017 rf back window started turning milky white at 4 yeads old. I love the car, but geez Mazda. The targa pieces on each side of the back window are faded bad already, too.
First I heard about the transmission issue, important to know....thanks.
Funny, no one ever mentions the Kappa series even though we are talking used sports cars on the cheap. The base models with stick are similar to the Miatas. The turbo versions (GXP / Redline) make an additional 90 HP and come with a stiffer suspension. A $200 reflash and your making around 300 at the crank. Add a $350 brace setup and keep high end tires on it. That's $600 plus your choice in tires and you have a car that dominates anything remotely close in cost. They are not easy to find but they are out there. I snagged a Solstice with 92 hundred miles on it for 12K 2 years ago. I reflashed and absolutely love it. I later added the brace kit and with great tires this thing is like it's on rails. With stock exhaust I can quietly outperform anything close yet still take trips hundreds of miles away and be comfortable. I've always liked the looks of the Miata and drove a couple but found the interior noise levels too high to consider taking trips with one.
Another great video thank you that dude in blue!!!!
Never been in a Miata but they look like so much fun ! (Coming from an 05 GTI driver)
Boosted Boy i have an 05 gti too man, pretty fun in its own way
Boosted Boy Miatas drive brilliantly! I would own one by now if I had the spare change. Saving up for a nice, well maintained NB hard top here soon 🤔
jack from online Corners are wicked fun. Mine is bone stick though
jack from online I may test drive one one day
Boosted Boy you should get a tune and some decent coilovers, makes the car a BLAST to drive. Is yours the vr6 or 1.8t?
Yo isn’t this the guy from big time rush?
For those curious, the ND2 does not have the same transmission issues. I'm picking mine up in three days.
Do you like it? I might still get one.
@@gittyupalice96 Most fun car I've ever owned and I had a 2010 Camaro SS and a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder.
The Mazda ND transmission was designed for the 1.5 Liter 128 HP engine. Dave Coleman convinced Mazda executives after having a meeting with American Miata enthusiasts that the 2.0 Liter engine should be put into the US version of the car. The transmission design allows the 2.0 Liter engine to be used too. It wasn't designed for the 2.0 Liter engine. Adding a turbo or supercharger to a 2016 to 2018 engine is NOT SMART. So if you plan on Auto Xing or track days extended warranties should be part of the car purchase. Just my 2 cents worth ( owner of a 2016 Club soft top with the original transmission ).
Your videos take a while to appear in my sub box the notification comes first now
I don't know how to feel about this lol.
ThatDudeinBlue lol it use to be video then notification like hr later
I've always noticed this. Before I hit the bell I'd see a video show up in my recommended feed before my sub feed.

The title makes it sound like ALL ND Miatas have the issue he had, which just is not true. I've had my 2016 ND for 18 months and 25000 miles now, and my transmission is great. I also know a couple of people with ND's who haven't had a problem. Anyways... still a great video and I enjoyed it. :)
I hope I don't get transmission problems too. I'm at 8 months with 11000 miles on my 16 nd
Mazda will take care of it if you do, usually offering a loaner car. Mine went at 11k, drove it to the dealer without 2nd gear, and they replaced it without conflict.
I've had mine for 2 years now. No issues.
Drove mike a maniac my 2016 with a 190 bbr for a year now. Transmission is perfect
You guys were just lucky
My ND had issues since 8k miles
I describe the ND-1 as very go-kartish .... plenty enough power to have lats of fun in the twisties while making it somewhat easy to stay out of trouble....both with physics and LEOs ....which at the end of the day? is saying a LOT...plus they are so economical!
The worst fault of this video is the title. Never really explains the worst fault of the MX-5. Maybe the worst fault of the MX-5 is that it is too damn fun to drive.
The flawed transmission for the 2016 & _early_ 2017 models.
@@BoltRM my Trans broke a gear at 25k miles. Never abused it.

Very good real world info! Thanks!!
Mazda will do the transmission under warranty when it goes, and the replacements don't have the manufacturing issue anymore
You can see the owner of the car keeps on looking at the RPMs as you accelerate. You can see regret on his face that he let someone "beat" on his car lol.
My ND is a '16 launch edition, original transmission, 62k miles on the clock. Its really weird how some people have transmission issues and there are some with 60k+ miles like me lol. My car has never been tracked though
BOT DINGO these guys abuse their cars that's why the transmission blows

Nice video man
As a NC owner I thought that maybe I would get a ND well into the last production years. After hearing from many sources that a Mazdaspeed version is out, I would rather wait for a NE and hope that by then Mazda is still making manual transmissions......wishful thinking.
The fuel system is the weak point in the ND's. It is limited to 200 ish HP. It's a shame you have to swap it for a better power plant.
I like the exhaust setup....sounds really good.
You should totally do an nc Miata next since it’s the “most hated Miata generation” I just bought one and it’s not thaat bad
a true Miata owner. Even new he bought it used.
There's a torque dip in first and second gear, just like in NC. This is all resolved through tuning. E85 helps a little bit, but not enough for the trade offs over 93.
Your hallucinating. I own a 2016 Club & daily drive it everyday. The torque curve is very flat thru till just about redline ! Plus its 200 pounds lighter than your NC. I drive it aggressively too. The NC has actually more torque in the lower mid ranges than the ND2.
Smiles per gallon 🙂🙂🙂🙂
When i got my ND i instantly lowered it on coils, body roll is gone 😊
It looks good! Man that color fits the ND
This comes all down to driver this is a great car I work for Mazda and sence this car had came out I have never once seen one come in for this problem it stems to driver
TSB R083/16B calls BULLSHIT on your opinion. There are thousands of serial numbers in that TSB and they are falling like flies in winter.
@ This is directly from TSB R083/16B:
"CAUSE
The vehicle might have been driven with rapid acceleration and deceleration using frequent shift
changes, causing to damage the 2nd and/or 3rd gears."
So Mazda thinks it's a use-case problem, and TSB R083/16B says so in plain English. Your Bullshit call is rejected. But they also are apparently retrofitting the boxes with strengthened 2nd/3rd gear sets. They have decided to attempt to accommodate the extreme use-case, by designing, producing, and installing stronger parts under warranty. Good for them, I say.
@@Michael_Lorenson LOL. God forbid that you drive a sports car with rapid accelerations and decelerations using frequent shift changes, like a... sports car!
Mazda has made FIVE iterations of these transmissions, and only the fifth version corrects all the problems they found (found by use-cases, go figure). There's no "apparently" here. That's a fact.
Of course they've changed all the transmissions under that TSB under warranty. They very well know they are defective, down to very specific serial numbers.
The transmission on my puny 1.5 liter blew up after mere ~11K miles (17896Km to be precise). That's a 150Nm engine, mind you, not a 500Nm beast, but that was enough to kill the version 1 my car had. It blew after the warranty ended, BTW, so no prize for me. The replacement and install costs about $3800.
US customers are luckier, of course. Mazda USA will replace your transmission even after the warranty has expired, so even first model owners are safe until 2020 or thereabouts, when the 5-year drive train lapse also expires.
Now, the fact that you didn't know about that TSB, or the problems related to versions 1 transmissions tells me you ignore many other things, so I'll let you read around in specialized forums and find out how many owners have suffered this failure.
@ Oh yeah, you have me all figured out. Bottom line, you claim the TSB blames something other than what drivers did with their cars. That is not the case. Not my fault that you made a false statement.
Serial numbers in that TSB falling like flies in winter. Statement. True. Begone, troll.
David don't worry bout' them angles, it looked great!

Not sure using E-85 is a good idea. Manufacturer recommends no more than 10% alcohol, the amount present in oxygenated fuel. Alcohol is pretty harsh stuff on engine parts not designed for it. They do recommend 91 octane or higher which I don't recall ever seeing. All our stations have 87, 89 and 93.

The RF is a chickmobile, mostly sold in a pretty pastel color with the automatic transmission. It is an abomination.
@@johntechwriter Yea , for the RF on the Miata forum the automatic transmission rate on those is almost 60%. For the soft top it like 70% for the manual transmission.
Exhaust sounds really good.
The only major flaw really is lack of power but I suppose fixing that would instantly create other problems
Sounds super good!
Got a rf with 30k miles now, no issues with the transmission so far
Love this car - enough for me to buy one. However, there are a couple "lemons" that I feel Mazda can fix in future updates...
Did Mazda company fix Miatas Transmission Problems after 2016 models. Did they redesign their transmission? Or is it the same after 2016? Cant seem to find anything on line concerning this Issue. Im starting to see how Miata owners are so into their cars that no one wants to touch on this Issue. I really like the car but with this design issue, no way in hell.
C& L Ros was fixed when the RF was brought out
Have an ND club and it’s fun but yet not because lack of power lmfao. I Haven’t had problems with the trans though so that’s interesting. The problem I have is Mazda cheaped out on only doing a one step paint job so it’s super sensitive.
I really want a 2019 rf. But transportation problems scare the heck out of me. I heard you say the 2016 trans have problems. So my question is did they fix the problem after the 2016.?
Yes , the current transmission should be a v5 version of the 16 ND. I have a 16 ND gt ANS still haven't had any problems with my transmission
Looks good.... of it had the regular silver or white wheels it’ll look better imo
I'm 6'2" and I can't fit in a Miata. Which is a shame because they look like so much fun.
So, what about the '16 ND transmission issues? I have 28K miles on mine and so far all is well.
And why is it that so few comments here are even remotely related to the car?
There are still reported issues even past the first generation transmission. Not sure this is sorted out just yet.
My bank says my next car must be 2014-2020. My budget is 20k and under.
