Is there a 5 Hour Version of Blood In, Blood Out Being Hidden From Us? Cruzito, Popeye, Magic Speak

- If you're Mexican, chances are you've seen the 1993 Chicano Cult Classic, "Blood In, Blood Out". And, if you're like the rest of us, you've seen it more than once. Like, EVERY TIME it's shown anywhere... and it's one of the movies you reach for on Movie Night.
It's got that effect on people.
Well, what would you do if I told you that there is a 5-6 Hour Cut of this movie that actually exists. The director, Taylor Hackford, originally presented Disney with a 4 Hour and 45 Minute version of Blood In, Blood Out, and tried to convince them that he actually had enough material to make 2 films of Blood In, Blood Out.
But, the plan was 86'd, and he barely got the approval to do 1, 2-3 Hour cut.
Ever since then, an urban legend exists revolving around this 5 hour cut, and all the rest of the cut footage, which could be dug up and used to give us, the fans, an extended version or a 2-3 part series.... with all the original movie footage.
Recently, 3 of the actors from the film, Cruzito (Jesse Becerra), Popeye and Magic sat down with Berner415 to discuss the 30 year anniversary of the film, the 5 hour cut and so much more regarding the cult classic.
I cut a couple of sections where they discuss the rumor of the "Holy Grail", what happened around the release of the film and where it could be headed in the future.
Orale! Let's Pray that we get a chance on day soon to see this extended version, so we can get closure on what happened to our favorite, beloved characters from a true Chicano Classic.

This movie would have made millions in theaters if there had been internet back then.

But maybe it came out better this way. The following for this film is insane. Even 30 yrs later. . . They should've won Academy.Awards, Oscar's, etc. Really should've. Most all of these guys went on to do other great, big things. Nothing as big as this.... well..i don't know. Billy Bob Thorton. Huge things.
Anyway... I don't know if the internet would've ruined the cultural impact this has had. For some reason..it was destined to be doomed...but somehow it came out on top.
Though.....as another viewer commented..sad they r broke. But they're not broke
However, they definitely deserved a bigger payout for this.

Im Danish and I´ve watched that movie over 100 times.. It´s one of my all time favorite movies.

This movie crosses all cultures, and I think it's because of the rawness and realness of it all. I think anyone can relate to a story of friends...family..growing up together and then fate sends us on different paths.

If you read his autobiography he says that a lot of the actors in that movie were super snobby towards him when they first met at the prison tour, until the guide told them he had actually did a stint there and they realized he wasn't anyone to mess with. 😂

I saw it in theaters as a kid with mom and convict uncle, good times.
As Cowboy raised Hood Mexican, I first saw the movie on vhs in a tiny pueblo in Chihuahua Mexico. Even in a town where gang members are considered the worst, little boys were yelling “VIVA LOS VATOS LOCOS!” I miss those Goofy days.

Blood In Blood Out is one of the best movies ever made. American me is ok but i find myself looking at Blood in Blood out more often. It would be mindblowing if they released the 5 hour version! Please may it happen during my lifetime!

American Me was ok...but it didn't really resonate with me the way Blood In Blood Out did. Something about it is more real to me.
The 5 hour version definitely exists...and I'm almost certain that there may even be 6 hours or more. Took a while for this video to start getting the attention it has been getting lately..so I wasn't sure if anyone was even interested. But now that I've seen the response to this topic, I'm inspired to move forward on trying to get in contact with the right ppl to make it happen.
Im sure it'll be an uphill battle, but the extended version of the original BIBO is completely worth the effort.

Can there be a petition or something to get that extra footage, every fan would be more than willing to watch that extra 3 hours. People binge watch so it would be no problem watching the extra footage.
I think that is a good place 2 start...but it would probably be raw footage. Maybe. Cuz Cruzito did say that Taylor Hackford (the director) already had a 4hour and 45 minute version to show Disney. So, maybe it's just cut down? We should be able to see what it is, and if it's some finished and some raw, then we'd need Taylor to reconstruct it.

The original is close to 3 hours long. However, when it came to this subject (the 5 hour version) Cruz and Popeye have the most insight.

im a white boy from cleveland and always loved the west coast especially when bone linked with eazy and brought the khaki swag to cleveland which alot was influenced from hispanics basically. the west side of cleveland has alot of hispanics and kinda did what they could with the culture but it was minimal. i was on the east. this was one of my favorite movies and still is you can never get sick of watching it. everyone from all sorts of hoods regardless of colors could relate to it. i always loved learning more about latinos and the culture because at the end of the day we were all broke but still took pride in something

It's always good to hear that many more people than we realize appreciate our culture and that we have brought something to the table in the form of culture, education, pride in ourselves and each other. The Chicano and street culture is really huge in Japan, Thailand...places in the East.
Think it's cuz of the authenticity of the pride in our culture and how we came up. Shit man...we all were broke. But..that spark we all have...to be an artist, a writer, a mechanic, a painter, carpenter , etc....that's all of us.
We all make mistakes, we all walk on 2 feet, we all bleed and sleep and are navigating this crazy thing we call life. And we all will die one day. Working together and appreciating what we all bring to the table.
This movie attracts people from all walks of life..and we can all come together and discuss a great American Classic..with a Chicano twist.

@@TheMexiConspiracyTheorist 100% great response! i honestly dont even know how to follow up to that. i can tell you a bonus story though. when i did graffiti in my early days i met a hispanic kid im still friends with to this day, he had the dopest custom built lowrider bike and regal on switches. i loved his car and bike! he goes back and forth from cali to cleveland and to this day he reps the pride and culture to the fullest and does a small fb group where he helps others with hydrolics with tips and people looking to buy and trade. through that group i see many different races trading rides that were a half built dream that someone else buys and finishes, or known lowriders that have been around years that have changed many owners, its truly amazing. alot of shops have expanded these days to be able to do this work, and we unfortunately lost good shops all over america do to things as basic as inflation prices. but it seems you can now even go in t he middle of no where and find a shop that can still hook your ride up. i had also been so influenced by the culture with the way i dress that on alot of days most people think im puerto rican, my family is polish though lol

What’s crazy is that I grew up on this movie.
My brother and I would watch and rewatch consistently. Then, it was impossible to find on all streaming services. Just now released on Hulu.
The crazy part is that 30 years later, I see kids wearing the gear from this movie still. Such a huge part of the culture and in my opinion light years better than American Me.

Me too! I 1st saw this movie back in '93..and it hits way harder and resonates with me more than American Me. I still rewatch BIBO to this day. Just saw the full version a few days ago on my road trip. I know that everyone would love to see that extended version..cuz its not some cheap remake or anything like that...it's all from the original shoot, cuz remember Popeye says Taylor Hackford shot the entire Biblia...all 300+ pages. I honestly think if it could all be acquired and reconstructed, that we may get 6-8 hours!🤯🤯

Hell..Miklo made a whole spinoff series of movies from the Vatos Locos epic
They are nowhere near as good as BIBO, at all. But...for the true fans..might be worth a view.
I know Paco and Cruz (Benjamin Bratt and Jesse Borrego) made another movie together called "La Misíon"...where they kind of continue the stories of Paco and Cruz..but it wasn't a sanctioned movie...meaning it's not Canon. Not part of the original and not made by any of the people except for Paco and Cruz. But..that is a good movie though.
They did a good job. Like I said..it's a spin off...so no, not the actual part of the story...but again...true fans I think would enjoy it.

It's also on UA-cam..on a channel called "Dash". He's did a great job, I think, on uploading the entire 3 hours, in 4k.
Other channels have it but cuts off and it's just audio at with a still frame of Montana speaking with Bonafide thru the gate at around 2:27:00 or so.

What we need is a letter with signatures from the cast who wants to be involved and organize a buyout from Disney for all the footage and sell to another studio who will put it together along with maybe a continuing story. Maybe Amazon, Netflix, or another fan led studio?

I think Hollywood Pictures is now a dead business..not sure on that. But, yeah,Disney owned the company which put out the movie. And since that company has tanked, Disney stills owns all of the intellectual property to any of the movies that were produced and released by that company.

Don't know why. It's frustrating cuz there are alot of hoops to jump through, and they even had these problems trying to release the version we have now. If they (Disney) hadn't sabotaged it from get...changing the name to "Bound By Honor", and killing all of the hype BIBO had already gotten...they would've seen huge returns at the Box Office.....and beyond.
I actually remember back when it was Bound By Honor...and I always remember thinking "why does it have 2 different names?"

He (Taylor Hackford, Director) had the cut he showed those execs to try to convince them he had all the material already ready to go. He just needed the Green light to put it out as 2 parts.
So..the cut is about ready
May need some tweeking, a few voice overs here and there....but a handful of ppl have already seen that cut.
Howevwr... from what I've been able to find...seems like there is alot left on the cutting room floor. Meaning...yes...this is about the "5 hour" version.
But...I'm convinced that we could possibly be looking at 6-8 hours of a great movie...with ALL the original cast.
Nothing remade with today's tech or actors.

But, this is about footage that was cut from the original movie. It was all part of the movie, originally, but had to be cut out due to time constraints.
Now, there is a vault somewhere with at least 2 hours of deleted footage, plots, twists, etc. that the director had to cut out...and if he could reconstruct all of that and re release it..that would be epic.
Not a part 2. Just an extended part 1.
With all the original actors, from back then.
I think it's worth investigating.

Im sorry I missed your response yesterday. When I first saw this movie, was 94-95 era. I had barely learned what weed and pills were. I was 14. I was one of those kids who grew up with D.A.R.E., you're a year younger than me now so you did too. I remember the days when I was coloring those pictures of what drugs were and putting that big 🚫 on them. Same with cigarettes and all.
Man oh man...wish I knew then what i know now. That knowledge would've been more of a deterrent than the DARE stuff.
Tried weed n pills in my teens..and drinking.
In my 20s, tried heroin for the 1st time. By28, I was already an ex convict. I would see prison a couple more times before hitting bottom. It's funny..u think prison would be bottom...but I still has some rascal in me.
I'm 44 now..and I am a good husband,father, business owner, and now a "growing UA-camr"😂
I've wrestled with the idea of doing some sort of "prison ministry" type deal..or maybe a program for after. I dunno. There's a lot of.good men that get caught up in the system and if it wasn't for the drugs... well..I don't know. Maybe. . I just want to use my experiences to help others. It all happened 4 a reason. For some reason..all those things had to.happen in my story. My wife thinks it was me coping from childhood trauma. I almost died after I found my dad dead at age 11.
I was abused alot (sensually, mentally) but not ever by my dad. He was a great man
The ppl who raised me abandoned me. These r just a few things..so she thinks it's cuz that. But I don't know. Didn't really think of those things...i was jus gettin high back then.🤷♂️
All I known is I've got a story to tell..and I'm tryna find a way to tell it and hopefully help others. I Love that I make ppl laugh with my videos. In my mind..im.brightneing someone's day😁

From what I understood inside prison miklo had power and could put hits out on people (including popeye) so that was popeye's way of staying in La Onda's hood graces and following orders. At that time Miklo didn't know it was Popeye who sold them out and would've probably suspect someone in Clavo's crew being an informant before Popeye being a snake.

I think the reason why Blood in Blood out was so subdued was the same reason why the whole movie encompeses the Lost idea or the coming future idea that Mexicans and Blacks will come together whether now or in future and they will rule the whole Planet..This movie had connotations to Aztlan and the dream of that world. Also it goes deeper then that with Race as the color of ones skin does not determine the FAMILIA and Family importance. Its your soul its how you are living where your heart is. That transdends all of the movie in reality..

This is so profound..I'm kind of speechless. Your take on the impact, meaning and significance of this film is honestly something I have never heard but it gives us something to really think about.
Maybe what you're saying is true. Because, if we look at the film..During that scene where Miklo is speaking to the council, telling them they all have to be separated, but that the change will allow Onda to grow. He tells them, " El Mero Mero had a dream...we are that dream."
But..one of Montana's main goals was to unite Black and Brown. And if you look at history, the reason some of us are brown, or darker skinned, like me, is because the Spaniards had brought slaves with them too, and they raped the women..black, light skinned, whatever.. and created a darker skinned race. This even goes back before Columbus and all of that.
Also dealing with the Taino Indians.

Your views come from a US way to see the world. While the movie has the Chicano culture as a premise, it's also about the Latin American culture, where it's not about tone of skin, it's about having the culture, a person is not Latino just because they have a parent from Latin America, as US society says. Latin American countries got migration from different parts of the world, it's not limited to the different indigenous people and Spanish descendants or Portuguese mainly in the case of Brazil, who are the majority, but there's descendants from other parts, as well. Migration happened in different ways.
During colonial times Africans were brought over by force, so they have descendants, too and as it happened mainly during the industrialization, Africans also migrated to the American continent along from other European, Slavic, Middle Eastern, Asian countries, some adding their culture to what's the Latin American culture. The American Dream at that time, it wasn't only the US, that was about moving to any country in the American continent. The US intentionally divided it to North and South and treated them as 2 continents to imply "we're different than Latin America".
Some countries promoted the European migration, while of course, still getting migrants from other parts. Paraguay didn't plan it, but they had to do it, because Argentina-Brasil-Uruguay, almost made them disappear in the conflict they had, there was only 300K left, mainly women and children, in few decades they went up to 1 million, because of new generation and immigrants that also came from neighbor countries. These things aren't simple, the imaginary borders set by countries, they don't tell the full story.
In Mexico, Mexicans of African ancestry can get discriminated, once there was an incident when they deported a Mexican woman, accusing her she was from some non Latino Caribbean country, it all had to do with her skin. To have an easier chance to be an actor/actress in Mexico, just be blonde or ginger with fair eyes. Latin American countries can be Eurocentric, because not only those at the top had those views and they promoted it, also the society was divided in several castes during colonial times, but they weren't strict, so couples of any type happened at any time. European born was the 1st caste during colonial times, European descendant born in the American continent was 2nd.
In this movie, there's no alliance between La Onda and BGA, Montana promoted that ideal, but Magic and Miklo had the BGA in their list, too. In the real gangs that inspired this story, La Eme had alliances with other gangs. The man that inspired Miklo's character, he was Latino, but he didn't have Latin American parents.
So many things to say about Latin America, culture and history, positive and negative.

Miklo and Magic plan was about getting rid of the Polar Bears and the BGA, when Bonafide offered help, he just doomed himself and accelerated the process, Miklo said he didn't expect the BGA to help them against the Polar Bears, but that helped them to destroy the BGA faster. Meanwhile, in real life, the gangs that inspired the story, they all 3 had alliances.
In real life, the US authorities did what you see during that speech, they sent ethnic Latino gang members from US prisons to different prisons, even to Central American countries, that only helped to create chapters and international organized crime in the region.
While yes, people was brought in by force from certain African regions, not all of them, indigenous people had brown or dark brown skin, too, they also formed couples since colonial times as you said, others migrated and they still migrate till this day. While in the US, they'd be classified ethnically as black, in Latin America, they're just Latinos, that like Miklo, Latinos are those who have the culture, it's not about genes, ancestry or color of skin.

This movie was pivotal to my childhood. I’m a white dude but I grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood. I was like Miklo (except I am actually straight white).
I used to run with a local gang and we were getting into the same shit that happens in this movie.
This movie showed me that the boy thing that was going to come from that lifestyle was death or prison.
(I ended up going to prison anyway, but like 20 years later 😂)
But as a white boy with ALL Mexican/Chicano friends I identified as it’s the fact that my friends were all cool with me and many of us are still friends today but I was still treated differently because of my skin.
We got caught once breaking into a car and the cops let me go but arrested my two friends.
I literally can quote this movie line for line.

This movie was a big part of my growing up too. I was always a way bigger fan of this movie than American Me. I don't know...I connected more with Blood In Blood Out.
