Charlie George vs Liverpool: FA Cup Final 1971

  • Video description:
Charlie George's famous performance in the 1971 FA Cup final against Bill Shankly's Liverpool at Wembley. Just days before, Arsenal had secured the league title at White Hart Lane and were on the verge of completing the first ever 'double' in Arsenal history, and the first FA Cup win for over 20 years. Music is by Saxon Shore: Isolated by the Secrets of Your Fellow Man.
    Charlie George profile:
157 starts, 49 goals. That was the sum of Charlie George's time at Arsenal - hardly mindblowing - Kevin Campbell scored more goals for Arsenal than Charlie. So why was he voted the 9th greatest player in Arsenal's history?
Part of the reason is because Charlie did what every fan dreamed of; he grew up watching Arsenal on the terraces, and ended up scoring the winning goal in an FA Cup final. He was Arsenal through and through. And, as this video demonstrates, on his day Charlie George was a fantastic player - a good passer of the ball, fantastic shooting technique and with the frame of a traditional centre forward.
However Charlie also possessed some bad luck with injuries (sound familiar?) as well as having an outspoken personality - which under authoritarian managers, often caused friction. He only ever won 1 England cap (on being subbed off, he told the England manager to 'fuck off') and probably never fulfilled his amazing potential.
However he still had a great career, the pinnacle of which was this performance.

I visited the Emirates stadium for the first time this June. Have been an Arsenal fan since I was 15 now in my eighties. I live in the States so it was such a thrill to meet the host..................Charlie George. what a character. He was so well informed and funny. I will never forget this goal. Young french soccer player, like us, we were all Charlie George after this cup final. I remember in a pub in London in 1995 drinking a beer surrounded by arsenal fans, asking me if I knew Arsenal ? I said no! But I know Charlie George! You can imagine how many beers we had together and we spent such a good time together, they didn’t know how Charlie George was famous in France!

Probably the most iconic goal celebration in English football. 1971, when the whole country stopped to watch the FA cup final.
    Fantastic goal Charlie.

What an amazing talent was charlie, way ahead of his time, Derby would of won the double also if he hadn't dislocated his shoulder against stoke, he was playing out of his skin and the rams went from being top of the league to winning one game out of eleven without him. Says it all. Legend

The game and the goal that started my lifelong love affair with Arsenal. Was 9 years old in 1971, here we are almost 50 years later and wouldn't change a thing. Thanks Charlie.

Dude me too. Going through the UHF channels, looking for the Three Stooges, an L.A. PBS station replayed the final, and I was blown away. The next season MOTD every Saturday afternoon and became a Gooner for life

Yes 1972 final killed me, even aged 10! King Charlie made this boy the happiest lad in the street in 71. RIP Brian Moore. The best commentator. ( But wait a moment, it's up for grabs now!..)

I really miss the old FA Cup Final days when both TV channels would start broadcasting about the event from around 9 am and continue the whole day. As kids we all looked forward to it whoever was playing.

This was the first FA Cup Final I watched. I vaguely remember the previous year (Leeds v Chelsea, I think). I was a big Arsenal fan at the time (because I lived in Blackpool?:)...and then hated them for the next 40 years. Everybody did his lying on the floor celebration at school...Great goal, Great memory....and I must say a great post, heart felt I think:)

Eighth of May 1971. Exactly fifty years ago today. My first cup final, on a really hot day standing on the Wembley terraces. Charlie was a bit lucky with the goal - his shot took a deflection off the Liverpool defender. There was a split second of disbelief when the ball hit the back of the net, then the Arsenal fans erupted with joy. Charlie had won us the double!

    • @charliegeorge.
      @charliegeorge. 7 місяців тому

I don't think any luck involved, never took a deflection, watch it in slow motion.

    1) Maybe the greatest goal celebration of all time.
    2) What a cool name. 2 x Forenames. Charlie. George. 3 syllables. Sounds great.
    3) Brian Moore was the voice of football when I was growing up in the 70s. The big match. A great voice too. Great drama in his commentary. Natural too. Fkn genius if you think about it. I loved Leeds then but he would make every match an event. Hugely influential was Brian Moore. RiP. Still missed. Never replaced.
    4) Charlie was an Arsenal fan who stood on the Northbank at Highbury. How cool is that? Charlie was a dude, a geezer. Charlie George was cool.

TBH, I've watched his overall performance in '71 final & it was mediocre. His passing was dreadful, in contrast to his obvious talent in being in the right place to receive the ball.

    • @duncanedwards7840

seanreillyireland You are right, I wasn't counting from the start, but at least 4 passes never made it where intended. Good goal though, worth more than a few stray passes on the day 👍
