I actually fell in love with Arsenal FC ( at age 9) the year before with a cup final they lost ( 1-0 to Ipswich)..but this final cemented my devotion to them. And "Chippy:" Brady was my favourite player along with Frank Stapleton, Pat Jennings and O'Leary ...but Brady was phenomenal , he was Football Writers or PFA Player of the year 78/79 i believe. That team underachieved ., were destined to be great ( consecutive Cup Finals , moving into top 4 consistency but Brady's move to Juventus and the dissipation of that team for whatever reason, it didn't quite happen.) ...but i will always have love for that team

My late father always spoke of Liam Brady's class when ever games were featured on T.V. My pop was Leeds through and through and went home and away from the 60's to our last league title win, under Wilkinson. Brady is with respect not spoken about enough, he's a living legend and deserves more credit. A fantastic player, truly superb.

As a child I used to adore how graceful and classy Brady was.
The timing and accuracy of his passing was truly sublime.

My boyhood hero. I was 11 when I watched this match and I can still remember cheering whilst running in and out the house and garden after that play setup by my hero for Arsenal's winning goal.
Talbot was a lucky man having cost Arsenal the trophy the year before and then playing for us and getting two winners medals in a row.
Sadly we lost the final the following year after a crossed ball accidently bounced off of Brooking's head and went in.
'79 - Best FA Cup Final ever for me.

17 when this was played. Funny, to look back now and see The Arsenal on the verge of greatness. Pointless now to wonder how different things might have been had the club not cashed in on Liam Brady and Frank Stapleton. That said, it was worth the wait for Michael Thomas's last-minute winner at Anfield in 1989. That may be my happiest Arsenal memory. Still a few more to come? We'll see.

This was a great game. Every few years a genius appears in the Arsenal shirt.. Charlie George, Liam Brady, Denis Bergkamp....

Spurs fan. 10 at the time. This game was one of the greats.
Some have no idea how big the fa cup was in UK culture ( Scotland always had their final same day).
12 page pull out in the tabloids , itv + BBC both starting cup final day coverage about 11am , 4 hours of programming. Cameras on the team bus from hotel to stadium.
Fa cup matches always got bigger attendances than league games.
Champion league changed everything. Qualification for champions league was the only thing that mattered.
Half the teams playing weakened teams because CL, relegation, promotion is all that matters.
    Am I a old git?

Liam Brady was MOTM in our FA cup final forty-five years ago.
His pace tormented Manchester United to get us the cup forty six years ago.

Loved Rosicky as a football fan, it would have been nice to watch Liam Brady in his prime. I am not an arsenal fan I am a Juve supporter but apparently Liam Brady had a great turn for us.

Best FA cup final I ever saw, shame they have killed it in favour of trying to get the $$$$$, people have no idea how big the FA cup finals was in those days. today i don't even bother to watch football at all.

Such an injustice Liam didn’t play in Euro 88. Instead of enjoying playing in the win v England , he was halftime commentating for ITV .
Even though he wasn’t jacks type of player Liam was coming around to jacks style in the last qualifying game v Bulgaria . Unfortunately injury kept him out although he would have missed the first two matches v England and USSR because of suspension
A real football Dubliner like Stapleton and O’ Leary although technically Dave was born in London ..
    Great days

Not sure about the music though.

Any other Gooners out there who used to have a heart attack whenever Willie Young had the ball at his feet? ...lol

Do you mean row Z Willie? If ever the ball came to his feet in a defensive position, he always seemed to put it high into the stands. Great with the head though and a few notable goals for the Gunners too

I agree. So the old stadium was getting outdated but it had soooo much more character than it's replacement. Twin Towers over Wembley Arch every day of the week & twice on Sunday

Kind of emblematic of how 20th century football was better.
    Compared to modern playmakers brady:
    a) Gives away possession a little more often
    b) Achieves an elegant rhythmic perfection far more often
And done with his own private, unique technique. Most players had one then, an entire repertoire of improvisation, rather than the machine like shuffling of todays flat footed roided up midgets.
