The greatest player ever. Unlike Pele or Maradona, Cruyff was responsible for creating a style of play that began in Ajax, continued in Barcelona (both as a player and coach) and lives up to this day in Barca, in all the players and coaches he mentored.
Err.. Rinus Michels is the person ultimately responsible for Ajax and Barca's style. As a player, coach, and technical director at Barca, Cruyff did more for football than probably any human, but if we're just talking on the pitch, Pele is the greatest _player_ ever. _Player_ . The man who invented the 'pressing football' and he made it so famous that even today many great coaches tried to follow his way. A true legend. RIP Johan Cruyff
Johan Cruyff, the Dutch football icon, left an indelible mark on the sport with his extraordinary talent, captivating style of play, and visionary approach to the game. Known for his impeccable technique, agility, and tactical awareness, Cruyff mesmerized fans and opponents alike with his ability to effortlessly glide past defenders and orchestrate intricate attacking plays. Beyond his mastery of the game, Cruyff also revolutionized football with his innovative thinking and philosophy, most notably embodied in the "Total Football" concept. He wasn’t as talented as Maradona, Pelé or Messi but he was a genius and his intelligence made him one of the 5 greatest of all time. For me he is the best European and the 4th best to ever play the game.
In addition to being a brilliant player Cruyff seemed like a decent guy. When he was playing for the Washington Diplomats they were training in Florida at Jacksonville U. Pele opened my eyes to the beautiful game, but it was Cruyff the Dutch master who applied the finishing touches for me after Pele hung up his boots. The speed, skill and stealth of Cruyffs movement in the 1974 World Cup was like magic to the eyes of a 10 year old, the way The Netherlands destroyed Brazil en route to the final was shocking. Never seen football like that in my life, I made The Netherlands my top Subbuteo team after that!

Etc etc. Still considering what Johan was capable of, he is the all time best imo. People compare maybe to some great goals, or number of goals, compare to a striker (but Johan wasnt a striker) but that doesnt define it for me. Johan made everyone on the pitch a better player. He was a teamplayer before anything else. He wasnt cheating either. You will find very few instances where he fauled (like Maradonna scoring with his hand). He was ambidextrous, able to do inside and outside left and right and top foot, naturally. It made him a great dribbler. Sensitive touches. Great passes. And so. Also had a work ethic that made him never give up. He was a director in the field for the rest of the team. He knew the game inside and out. He was an intelligent player. The germans didnt publish that article in Bild, day before the final, for fun. It was to take Johan out, whom it affected most. @@StofStuiver That’s a remarkable tribute to one of the GOAT players. No one stolen anything from him. Germany won the 1974 WC as the deserving team. Cruyff is a legend of the game and undoubtedly one of the best but use the term "stolen" is not suitable by any mean. You can't underestimate the mightiness of that German team.
Hmm...no..I am Portuguese and Dutch but Cruyff had more natural talent and with him NL played so much better than Portugal ever did. Nl became a worldwide known football brand whereas we cannot say the same about Portugal and Cruyff stood at the basis of this achievement., Ronaldo is a superhealthy, superman like player. Fantastic but what he lacks, in my view, is the surprising moves Cruijff and Maradona had.

The only player to make an impact in and of the field with his view of total football. As a coach also he was a legend. He had a vision of future football.
All my respect for that guy. So much intelligence, finesse and football in one person. No comparison with todays wannabes, always trying to impress everyone else with tattoos, piercings, haircuts, cars, telephones. This guy possessed the magic in his legs, heart and mind.
We used to talk about him back in the early 1990s with Prime Sports as the main source of such documentary type videos. Johan Cruyff was indeed a living legend. Respect from India.
Cruijff and Van Hanegem were the motor of the Dutch football team during the 1974 WC. The Dutch lost the final against Western Germany because both failed after the first minute. They were the best players of the best club teams of the beginning of the seventies: Cruijff playing for Ajax and Van Hanegem for Feyenoord, both teams winning the EC 1 in 1970 (Feyenoord), 1971, 1972 and (1973 Ajax, three in a row), the UEFA Cup in 1974 (Feyenoord) and the World Cup for clubs in 1970 (Feyenoord) and 1972 (Ajax). (Ajax refused to play the WC matches in 1971 and 1973.)
I am making this comment here because this video was produced by FIFA. Why is the real reason for Cruijff not being on the national team in 1978, in Argentina never discussed? Kept hush, hush, in fact. During the time of final selections of players in the national team, Cruijff's wife and children were kidnapped from his home in Spain while he was at the (football)club. They were released and returned him and to safety about a week later with an Argentinian message. The message was that Argentina wished for Cruijff to not play in the tournament and if he chose to play anyway, his family would be kidnapped again but at that time would be killed and not return. Cruijff consulted with some people close to him, including Spanish and Dutch officials. It was pointed out that for their entire lives he would have to fear and always look over his shoulder and that his family's safety could never be 100% guaranteed by any security team. He made a difficult choice to put his family first. Only 25 years later would he reveal this information in a book that he wrote, which leads me to a second question. Why did Cruijff not talk about this for 25 years and choose to speak, only after he was completely retired and disassociated from Barcelona and any business involvement with football? Who told him that they didn't want this to become big news? I encourage people to read his book. This and the entire 1978 World Cup makes me sick.
I just looked up this story, that I had never heard before. Another (Dutch) source tells that Cruijff was actually at home as well. Apparently the kidnapper tried to tie Cruijff, but at that moment his wife Danny ran outside. The kidnapper went after her but was caught soon. The matras in a van parked close to their house made people think it was an attempt to kidnap.
What I love about Cruyff is not only he is a great player, great manager, he basically changed football in many ways. He created new styles, he is the on-field manager, he is a manager, he created tradition where clubs raised new young generation... The man is a legend, in everyway possible in football.
What I love about him is that he had a resounding influence in football both on and off the pitch. A star on the field with excellent technique and a master tactician off the field who pioneered the modern art of total football.

Cruyff has been my favourite player of all time since I saw him in the 74world cup , I was 4yrs old he mesmerised me with his skill and intelligence, I was very young but I knew he was special! No once since has made such an impression on me!
I loved watching the Netherlands in the 70's,I was a bit young to remember the '74 finals, but 4 years later Holland were my favourite team in Argentina, they played brilliant attacking football, not unlike Barcelona of 10 years ago, they had a team of brilliant player's all of whom could play, neeskens, rensinbrink, Johnny rep and Arie haan, you have to look up Arie haans two brilliant goals from the tournament, both way outside the box,I would say 40 yards, against Italy and Germany, they have to be seen to be believed, absolutely amazing.
His name is Jan Olsson, and an entry on his page stated: „He is largely remembered for being victim of the very first Johan Cruyff turn in Sweden's match against Holland at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany”...

No one stolen anything from him. Germany won the 1974 WC as the deserving team. Cruyff is a legend of the game and undoubtedly one of the best but use the term "stolen" is not suitable by any mean. You can't underestimate the mightiness of that German team.
Exactly right , as much as a legend CRUYFF is , beckenbauer is too. He won it that time. Fair enough for me.
One the greats.Cruyff like Maradona and Pele was Unique. RIP to them all. 🙏🇳🇱🇧🇷🇦🇷
We lost fair it wasn’t stolen but yes its sad
He was the greatest artistic and skillful football player ever produced in history.
Defenetly the best European football player in history.
R.I.P. Johan
Cian Harford who is better?
faster nah haha cruijff is one the fastest players ever on the first meters
Hmm...no..I am Portuguese and Dutch but Cruyff had more natural talent and with him NL played so much better than Portugal ever did. Nl became a worldwide known football brand whereas we cannot say the same about Portugal and Cruyff stood at the basis of this achievement., Ronaldo is a superhealthy, superman like player. Fantastic but what he lacks, in my view, is the surprising moves Cruijff and Maradona had.
You pulled those stats out of your ass
Cryuff is the greatest football person ever. One of the greatest players and one of the greatest managers. A Genius

One of the greatest player of all time and the greatest coach there has ever lived ... RIP toba real legend of the game
Johan Cruyff is a legend without world and European titles but his service to the world of Dutch football has always been remembered
Rip Johan Cruyff
Cruyff has won European titles. He did a three-peat of the European Cup and won one as Barcelona manager.
3:44 Sarri is proud of this man

Not only one of the best players of all time but also one of the best coaches of all time.

He pulled out of the National team because he and his family were subject to attempted kidnap.

Well put!
;]
Not bad for a guy who smoked 40 a day.

(Ajax refused to play the WC matches in 1971 and 1973.)

its so sad...that we can never see him play like that again...
#RIP
Cruyff is one of those examples when you wished certain people would live forever so sad he has gone a part of my childhood died also.
I never knew this.
Shame on Argentina for that.
If that was true it meant Argentinians are crminials and cowards.
The junta ruling Argentina were criminals and cowards... not the whole country.
You’re gonna question why he was silent, poor man had to for his family and it’s better have a family than a trophy
What I love about Cruyff is not only he is a great player, great manager, he basically changed football in many ways.
He created new styles, he is the on-field manager, he is a manager, he created tradition where clubs raised new young generation...
The man is a legend, in everyway possible in football.
RIP Cruyff, thanks for your magic
What I love about him is that he had a resounding influence in football both on and off the pitch. A star on the field with excellent technique and a master tactician off the field who pioneered the modern art of total football.
You hit the nail.
respect to legendary Cruyff ❤
¿Como Holanda no salió campeón del mundo? ... uno de los equipos más maravilloso de la historia ... con el mejor lider dentro y fuera de la cancha .. un grande Cruyff
Cruyff has been my favourite player of all time since I saw him in the 74world cup , I was 4yrs old he mesmerised me with his skill and intelligence, I was very young but I knew he was special! No once since has made such an impression on me!
Me too. Cruyff GOAT. Genius. Nobody impressed me so much.
He was my favorite player of all time ! Same age I am so I got to follow his career from beginning to end.
The best player ever, had it all,but short temper...true genius, what you see now in football, messi etc..yeah Cruyff!!!!
Short temper? Explain, please
Can we all just take a moment and talk about the cigar at 3:41.
1:29 The opponent even smiles. He knows he's part from history now.
His name is Jan Olsson, and an entry on his page stated: „He is largely remembered for being victim of the very first Johan Cruyff turn in Sweden's match against Holland at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany”...
Haha
I never noticed that, but u r right. Prolly smiles in disbelief of having been tricked. Its funny ;]

Cruyff was a superb player. He used to be a dread to most defenses, because of his incredible physical agility, his lightening speed, stamina, dribbling skills, and superior field of vision. IMO, Cruyff belongs in the top 3 best players list of all time. 🇪🇹
