There's nothing worse for the outcome of a video game than the devs being told to "broaden the demographics." Those words have killed many franchises who's publishers just couldn't just be content with their niche but devoted audiences.
TotK is the new Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.
Not only but have the nerve to openly mock the old games.
In some cases it ends up being pretty good

It deviates from the typical norm of its franchise but it a properly balanced, enjoyable and functioning game

The whole video is a meme free real estate.
This video is an exemplary sample of this early 2010s era of UA-cam Comedy. The text on screen. The hyperactive editing. The crazy lore surrounding the reviewer. The "loud, silly, and crazy is funny". It's a legit vintage and this video particularly exemplifies these traits if you ask me. It's weird to have had this for a decade and looking back on how this stuff is crystalized in these videos yet has slowly developed away from it. It's still fun to watch and I have to wonder if we will have a wave of content that calls back to this style in the future.

I remember reading somewhere that the main reason that Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts had cars in it was because while making the original game (Banjo-Threeie) they made the worlds too big and thought "Hey, the player could travel around faster in a car" so they reworked the entire game to center around the cars instead.... we were so close...
Think it still would've been a problem. I LOVE Banjo-Tooie, but some worlds (looking at you, TerryDactylLand and Grunty Industries) were TOO big with nothing in them. I guess that's why I love the original the best.
I hate all of you --True. I feel like they made the worlds way to big with nothing in them so you could have room to drive your car but it ended up feeling like a post-nuclear fallout zone. The originals made wide open spaces without making them empty. Nuts and Bolts has a defined art style, but the design and composition of the art style has no character.
Agreed. I hope Yooka Laylee doesn't make the same mistake / or even take it further. More levels that are small would be better than fewer bigger ones.

Holy shit. Almost 11 years. I watched this nonstop as a teen, and come back to it from time to time. It's so nostalgic and still pretty damn funny
Okay, I wish to clarify why many a Banjo-Kazooie fan was ticked off at this game. I can name a few good reasons.
1. False advertising: Rare released a trailer of a new hi-def B-K game and it looked like the classics would return better than ever. What we got from the finished product was NOT the game we were hoping for, but a racing game with LEGO cars that should have been its own game that had NOTHING to do with Banjo-Kazooie.
2. It's not a spinoff: If this was a spinoff like the Mario Kart games, I would have let this slide. But guess what? It's a direct sequel that threw away what made the old games good.
3. It hates its predecessors: Yes, it's a B-K game, but it doesn't have its spirit. There are several instances where Nuts and Bolts looks back at the past games and thinks they're either washed up or that platformers are things of the past (in spite of OTHER platformers doing pretty dang well *cough*Mario Galaxy*cough*). What JonTron showed was only a HINT of the "take thats" to the past that the game throws out.
4. It's confused: The game seems to want to be a blend of racing, build-it, and platformer, but this is an act that is nigh-impossible to accomplish. Build-it games require time for building things, which KILLS racing games and platformers. Platformers require worlds to explore, but racing games and build-it games take away the details, characters, and exploration-based levels that make platformers fun. Last but not least, racing games are meant to be fast and finished quickly, but platformers require time to complete fully and explore, while build-it games require time to create objects.
The result? This game is a confused mess and a huge insult. Plain and simple.

I am not a fan of the game. I have only played a bit of Banjo Kazooie when I was a kid, but I don't remember a second of it at all, except for the character you play as. But seeing some videos of gameplay of that game, I understand the problem. An adventure game turned into a build-it racing game with a total lie of an advertisement. I can see how that would upset people.
I guess people would look at this game differently, if they had included what the game is really about in the ads. I imagine fans would likely give it a try, and judge it from a different perspective. But this did not happen. I think it's stupid to get people thinking that the new game is gonna be just like previous ones... while those bastards are leaving out the main part of the game.
Having no memory of any games, but having played DK 64, I still felt somewhat insulted at 9:54. Collecting objects in these games, even pointless ones, always feels like an achievement. And I enjoy that. And then at 10:13, gamers today just want to shoot things?!?!?! Wow! Could they say anything more wrong? I've seen plenty of shoot-em-up gamers who really enjoy a good platform game. I'm one of those.
Did these people have such major issues with the previous games that they had to lie to people just to sell what they wanted, and not what other people really wanted? It's a bunch of bull-ass-monkey-dicks!
Yeah, I'm probably overreacting, me not being a Banjo Kazooie fan and all, but I do tend to at least try and speak for other people. And sorry for the very long comment. I did not expect to write so much. I just wanted two paragraphs.

never having played the originals, this game was literally my absolute favourite for so many years. in fact it still is one of my favourites... kinda want to dig it out and play it again.
can't remember how many times i've completed this game 100%, seriously. it is by no means a bad game

There's been franchise revivals that kicked ass. Kid Icarus:Uprising, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Giana Sisters. Even the new Killer Instinct looks awesome.
That's true. Though, when they do revive them they Rarely (lol, there it is again) feel exactly the same. I like DK Returns for its gameplay, but I have a few bones to pick with its art direction. (It's a little washed out and uninspired when compared to the originals, no?)

How is this not exactly what happened to banjo? The developers took a franchise with a staple formula that made it what it was, and fans loved it for that, and then decided for them "gamers don't want all this", and then completely erased it and built something to appeal to a completely different crowd instead of the one they already had.
And now instead of a linear puzzle adventure, with dungeons and satisfying and steady progression reward, we have open world sandbox, where the word is collect every part and build cars to save hyrule.
@@gormauslander zelda 1 was a open world sandbox, not a linear puzzle adventure. Breath of the wild was a return to the series roots. The first zelda had no good satisfying rewards for dungeons either, and most of the heart containers came from the overworld, not the dungeons. Are you trying to say that the first zelda ruined zelda?

This was one of my favorite games growing up. I would make a bunch of star wars ships and have imaginary dogfights with them. I would put the self destruct in too so I could get shot down too.
With this video getting as many views as it did, it's probably not a stretch to say that it has defined the overall opinion of the gaming public. It's a shame because I always thought it looked like a fine game. In my opinion though, I think the best way they could've marketed this game could've been as a return to the world of Diddy Kong racing. Could've had the characters from that game return as well. Might've reminded people that Banjo's very first game featured him in a car.
@jubedube9570 I absolutely agree. I understand why people didn't like it. It's like how a lot of people feel about the new Star Wars, where it not only didn't meet any expectations, but smeared a turd all over them.
@@michaelweitzel10 I'm a huge fan of the original games, since I didn't have much internet access at the time I didn't know what to expect. Was I disappointed? Yes I was, but the game grew on me, objectively it's not a bad game. I did have fun making crazy vehicles, I feel that if we had a numbered sequel and then this game, it wouldn't have been so "hated". It would've been considered a spin-off, just how Mario gets away with it with sports spin offs, etc.

I mean what if after Metroid Prime 3, Nintendo came out with a teaser for a new Metroid Prime, and upon release day, you were greeted with Metroid Prime FEDERATION FORCE. this may just be because I've never played another paper Mario game but I enjoyed sticker star and would love a sequel!
Good luck with that, because a game like metroid prime can't be made by just pulling something out of your ass, games take years to develop, code, debug, and test before it's released to the public.
+Jordan Hunter-King Nintendo has said they'd focused much more heavily on Colour Splash's story than Sticker Star. They also are trying new things with the IP and you're calling them uncreative. I think you're just stuck in you're own little perfect world.

There's nothing wrong with liking this game. If it makes you happy that's a good thing.
Absolutely nothing wrong. Judging from the comments and some footage in the video, it looks like a pretty decent game, but not a Banjo Kazooie one. It's like if the next Doom game turned into romantic visual novel, or Crash Bandicoot into military FPS, or Metal Gear into zombie survival (this one sounds totally ridiculous, but thankfully it would never happen, I'm sure of it).
