I am surprised at how little people know of this game, hands down the best platform game of its time. The idea was to beat Mario 64 which revolutionized 3D platformers and RARE wanted to take the Mario formula and enhance it and it ended up being the best thing ever made for the N64. Even Banjo-Tooie towards the end of the N64's life cycle enhanced Kazooie's formula and made an already polished game, even more amazing! RARE were an amazing development company... Side note: Banjo deserves to be in Smash, fuck all the politics and legal issues, Banjo is apart of the Nintendo family! Dunkey make this go viral plz! #banjoforsmash
Banjo-Kazooie are still a part of the Nintendo family even after buyout, Rare never forgot about Banjo-Kazooie being canon to Donkey Kong, they have thrown in 3 Diddy Kong Racing Easter Eggs in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Banjo himself mentioned DKR 2 times and the quiz before the end of the game asks the question "what was Banjo's first appearence in a video game which wasn't his own", the right answer was DKR, how did they mention DKR in a Microsoft game without being sued by Nintendo, we might never know how.
But the graphics dont give any gameplay, isnt a game about gameplay? i think so. If i want nice graphics i go for a walk in the park but im too fat for dat.
Matt Matonti How is it pandering? A lot of his extremely young fanbase probably play and prefer a lot of modern open-world games, which he criticises in this video.
+ThePacifistBruh especially the Superman 64 review, very in-depth and the pros and cons are fleshed out. you can tell he took his time and made an unbiased review that does the game the justice it deserves
I miss Banjo Kazooie. I was a really stupid kid, so I could never finish it, but I've always wanted to go back to it now that I'm actually capable of playing games without cheats. Unfortunately my N64 was stolen my a friend when I was younger. He promised to pay me 5 cents a day. He never paid, and disappeared over the Summer. I don't even remember his name anymore. I think it was Austin. Fuck you Austin.
I remember getting Banjo Kazooie on my birthday (Halloween) when I was 8 years old. That same day, we moved our small little CRT TV into my room as it was officially "mine" for me to keep and play on, as an extra birthday gift. I still remember not having a table stand for the TV and having it on the floor, and after we went out trick-or-treating, I instantly went to my room to start it up. There were some days in November I pretended to be sick and stayed home from school to play it. I still remember how magical it was to play Click Clock Wood for the first time, literally one of the best level designs I've ever seen, and I would sometimes fantasize or imagine coming across Click Clock Wood in real life in my hometown, and sometimes still do. 10 years later it was re-released on Xbox Live and this time I played it with a friend as a co-op style and that was so much fun too to do it a 2nd time with a buddy. One of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had.
+Ezra Canlas I am. Istarred in Batman: Days of the Pizza Fuckfest. Not only this, but i was trained by HimSelf, the Mighty Dunkey, to accomplish my mission and bring all ducks of the universe oeace and harmony. Now, after all these years, i return to action, after seeing my wife duck killed and my little ducklings be served in Papa Johns meals. I had a dark past. I was drinking, injecting heroine to my eyeballs and confessing my true love for DUNKEY.
Banjo Kazooie is my childhood. I'm 32 and just replayed this game not to long ago. It's so nostalgic and memorable. Playing mad monster mansion takes me back to being 8 years old and all my worries melt away for a awhile.
Watching after Banjo got into smash! Thanks so much dunkey you introduced me to this amazing game 2 years ago and it’s quickly became one of my favorite games! Love ya Dunko and Thanks
kylelandry you are like the 20th famous and talented UA-camr that I saw comment in Dunkey's videos. Also thanks for inspiring me to start playing piano.
This and the sequel Banjo Tooie are still amazingly charming, beautiful and have so much heart and care that the majority of the modern gaming industry can't hope to replicate.
+kablouser He's saying that Dunkey isn't usually serious, and it sort of catches him off guard in some videos and makes it to where you can't tell if he's saying the truth or not.
+Max S Even when he is being a complete jackass there's usually a grain of truth to it, usually stemming from him being such an ironic jackass that it mocks the kind of people who state his arguments with conviction. In other words, satire.
+Max S Well, he wasn't sarcastic, but that's the whole point you see He speaks like that the whole video and you think it's going to end in a twist but in the end the twist is that there is no twist BAM
2:25 Even never playing Banjo-Kazooie I love that bird. It was a Banjo-Tooie clip after the mole guy dies where she was like "oh well, he wasn't that popular a character anyway." Savage AF.
I felt like the music to Banjo had a lot of similarities to Donkey Kong 64 so I looked it up. My ears didn't deceive me! The composers' name is Grant Kirkhope. Apparently, he did a lot of stuff in the 90's. And he's Scottish. So that's cool.
As a kid, I didn't like Banjo-Kazooie. I fucking loved that shit. I ate it up like the little dumbshit I was and it was wonderful and I loved every minute of it! I also sucked ass at it, because I sucked at every game I played as kid. It took me years to beat Ocarina of Time and I never gave two shits because games were pure magic to me. Now, everything sucks. *puts on nostalgia-goggles*
+TheGoldenCaulk Dude. When I was a kid; I spent hours running around the forest village. Not because I couldn't beat the Deku Tree dungeon (I did), but because it was so magical getting to just stay in this friendly beautiful place as long as I wanted. I miss when games were like that instead of po-faced men with guns. *Activates Nostalgia-vision*
Spyro the Dragon didn't try to replicate Banjo Kazooie. That would be impossible since they came out less than 3 months apart. Both games are god damn masterpieces though.
+Krawlow i know right, i mean as a stupid ass little dumb fucking kid i hadn't even HEARD of banjo kazooie. but i did play donkey kong 64 and goldeneye 007 both okay rare games, but fucking shit if i had known games like this even fucking existed when i was much younger i would've probably fucking loved this shit. i mean i loved paper mario when i was like, what fucking 7 or 8. and that was fucking PAPER MARIO im like 21 now and still play that old shit. never finished banjo kazooie, but now i will
+Krawlow Donkey Kong is amazing as well. It's one of the games with the most stuff to collect and is a very versatile, funny and overall amazing game. A short game, with a pretty hefty humor and I can recommend as well is "Conker's Bad Fur Day". Shit is so hilarious. Sadly the game is quite short but that's the only negative thing I can say about it.
+Krawlow dk64 is great too, but they definitely went overboard with the collectables on that one and the levels are a lot bigger which breaks up the pacing
I think the difference is that in the first example, you are NOT engaged directly with the gameplay, and are really just doing menial, mindless things, that look "grand" because of the scale of the game. Whereas in the second example, regardless of how large the level is, or how many times you play it, it consistently keeps you engaged in different, fun and interesting ways. One of the worst feelings when playing a game, is boredom. Sometimes a genre might just be a bit "slower" or more "immersive", requiring slower interaction and a large, less "gamey" world. However, a lot of times, slow and shallow gameplay is just bad design.
@@RedFloyd469 imo Click Clock Wood is guilty of that. It seems interesting at first but climbing the tree over and over gets mindless and menial, not to mention the biggest nightmare in the series when going for that 100%. Tooie did have its fair share of slow, bad design as well but I find these moments in both games so forgivable. Those moments feel like it was just a result of passionate devs getting too caught up in an awesome idea that's really only awesome on paper. And personally I just like being in those worlds. Sure I'll take 5 minutes to give a dinosaur a ride on a train, I got nowhere else to be.
@@RedFloyd469 considering Dunkey gave oot a 5/5 as well, I'd assume he likes the level because of mixture of thinking ahead & how your actions really influence the future. Oot is filled to the brim with this exact strain of puzzles.
Banjo Tooie is still a good game but what i don't like about it is how you can't 100% a world without going into the next world to learn a move that you need to get a few missing jiggys. The worlds are bigger in Banjo Tooie but at least you have the telepads to move around to key area's quicker. For anyone who likes Banjo Kazooie i still highly recommend to play Banjo Tooie. Its still a fun game to 100%. DK64 however takes the whole collectathon too far. I still love playing DK64 but its just not a fun game to 100%. They get to carried away with the bonus barrels in the later levels and some of them are broken (Beaver Bother) and most of them are just not fun. Dk64 is a fun game to finish just not worth getting 100%.
@@Magnum__Dong The retreading of levels with new abilities is one of my favourite aspects, I like the metroidvania structure. I also love DK64 but also agree with everything you just said, especially the part about Beaver Bother.
One of the greats. The industry will never come even close to the brilliance of Banjo Kazooie. The industry will never come close to the standard of quality and joy and fun set by Jak and Daxter, Mario, Rare's games, Spyro, Crash, etc. SNES thru PS2, from 1991 to 2007, was when gaming was really amazing. Too primitive before then, too fucking corporate and soulless since. I miss it.
Yeah, now days it's just "If I have the best graphics, I have the best game" but no one ever realises it's not about the graphics its about the story you get.
It’s not about the story either it’s all about the gameplay if you don’t have good gameplay you have failed to make a good game you may have the best story in the world or the prettiest graphics ever made but if you fail to make fun engaging gameplay you have failed to make a good game
You can probably blame me for that. I've been non-stop rewatching this and the announcement together to persuade the UA-cam algorithm into associating these videos.
Drew P. Weiner well, there's good and bad linear. If it doesn't feel like it's always the same, linear games can be good games, just as open world games and games in the style of Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie can suck, if they feel like there's nothing to do. (Which obviously isn't the case for those two games). I mean, take Banjo Kazooie, and remove half of the mechanics. Would feel repetitive in basically no time. But it HAS all the mechanics, and literally everything talks to you, the soundtrack is one of those that makes you play a game for 6 hours straight and you wonder where the time went. Or take Donkey Kong Country. The levels are linear, but it just keeps most people playing it
Linearity is a double-edged sword, as is nonlinearity. While linearity is limiting, it also allows developers to focus on refining the stage and keeping it consistently interesting. Nonlinearity provides players with more options, but developers can lose focus if they get too wrapped up in it, and a lot of times players will feel as though there is no direction.
Loved this game, Came back to it on the switch and am half way through it, and I am now realizing, this might be one of the best games I've ever played. The enjoyment and fun things in every level just keeps getting better, and better.
+Kaiju Kamacuras Overrated, huh? I hope your talking about Kazooie, cause Tooie is far from overrated. In the contrary, Tooie should get a lot more attention in my opinion.
Exactly. Banjo-Tooie felt like a slightly more 'grown up' version of Banjo Kazooie. More dark, deeper voice for Banjo, post-apocalyptic scenes.. I like it when games grow up along-side you. It feels genuine. It also improved on some issues of the first Banjo game, like adding teleporters for checkpoints, and making it so you do not have to re-collect those damn notes every time you leave the level.
Siegmeyer Of Catarina I know really nothing about that game I've heard people say it's not as good it's better it's just as good I don't know what to think
It’s been eight years. Can you Dunkview the sequel Banjo Tooie. My grandma got me that game and I didn’t even know a sequel had dropped after beating the first one. It was in an age where if you didn’t see the commercial, and your friends didn’t have it, you didn’t know about it. Anyways I loved the sequel.
Great review, Dunkey. Banjo-Kazooie is my all-time favourite video game ever made for all the reasons you layed out in this video. I'm so obsessed with this game I put years of effort into being able to beat it in 2 hours and 14 minutes with every single collectable haha, I just never want this game to leave my life and I'm stoked for Yooka-Laylee
Dickhis Khan, I can fully relate to the years of effort, my original save file (from when I was six all the way to when I was 9) has almost 2 years time played. With every collectible all 100 notes in every level and so much more. I’m pretty sure about 4 of the weeks in the time played is just from me falling asleep in middle of playing and listening to the soundtrack.
Showing this video to blind Banjo haters to give them an explanation as to why this game is a masterpiece or at least better understand why Banjo is better than Steve in Smash
I like all your videos, but this is so good. You really nail what's great about this. Especially the link between the instruments and their names. I'm so impressed.
aaah, clickclock wood, The best level in banjo kazooie en by far in any other platformer i've ever played. It just oozes atmosphere, very season is done so well, and really gives you an apropriate feeling.
Banjo tooie was a LITTLE too stretched out for me. Not that it was bad but like he said, Banjo Kazooie had simplicity. Tooie is still a golden standard for quality sequels to me though.

Fuck you some more Austin.
This Austin kid ruined your life, I hope your N64 broke before he could play any game on it.
why would you give him your n64, are you really that giving to just give him it
That's rough, buddy.

Real talk, Banjo Kazooie and Spyro were my two favorite games ever. They're still in the top 5.

This and the sequel Banjo Tooie are still amazingly charming, beautiful and have so much heart and care that the majority of the modern gaming industry can't hope to replicate.

But this time he wasnt
I can tell if hes sarcastic straight away, get higher iq man. He was mockin modern games btw.

He speaks like that the whole video and you think it's going to end in a twist but in the end the twist is that there is no twist BAM
Banjo Kazooie might be a 5/5 mastapiece, but it still can't beat Knack 2's undefeated, well deserved 10/5. Better luck next time, Nintendo.

This was one of the first games I was every addicted to. Holds a special place in my heart.
Wow!
Is that the guy from Nuts & Bolts
Missed opportunity to call it: Banjo Kazooie (dunkviewie)
..
I'm here all week
I felt like the music to Banjo had a lot of similarities to Donkey Kong 64 so I looked it up. My ears didn't deceive me! The composers' name is Grant Kirkhope. Apparently, he did a lot of stuff in the 90's. And he's Scottish. So that's cool.
He also did the spiral mountain remix for smash that u hear in the reveal trailer.
Also one of dk64's levels used the music from an unused banjo kazoie level.
Gaming growing up in the 90's was awesome. Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario, Sonic and GoldenEye.
Tommy Wilson don't forget superman 64!
Tommy Wilson I still to this day think that Perfect Dark is underated in the shadow of it s big sibling Golden eye.
and racism
Dover wow, SJW's really get everywhere don't they?

As a kid, I didn't like Banjo-Kazooie.
I fucking loved that shit. I ate it up like the little dumbshit I was and it was wonderful and I loved every minute of it!
I also sucked ass at it, because I sucked at every game I played as kid. It took me years to beat Ocarina of Time and I never gave two shits because games were pure magic to me.
Now, everything sucks. *puts on nostalgia-goggles*
+TheGoldenCaulk What the fuck did I just read?
Creepy Dude The story of my childhood experience with video games. For real.
+Creepy Dude Go back to pre-school and then read it again.
+TheGoldenCaulk Don't feel bad about not being able to beat a game in years. Games back then were WAY, WAY harder than recent titles.

i loved paper mario too, i'm 19 tho
+Krawlow Donkey Kong is amazing as well. It's one of the games with the most stuff to collect and is a very versatile, funny and overall amazing game.
A short game, with a pretty hefty humor and I can recommend as well is "Conker's Bad Fur Day". Shit is so hilarious. Sadly the game is quite short but that's the only negative thing I can say about it.
it's amazing because it's almost the same game as banjo kazooie but with more popular characters, and that's quite sad
+Krawlow dk64 is great too, but they definitely went overboard with the collectables on that one and the levels are a lot bigger which breaks up the pacing
"In Banjo Tooie the levels are too big and everything takes too long to do"
also Dunky
"My favorite level is the one you have to play 4 times."
When nostalgia combines with something that’s actually really well made man is it beautiful
I miss it.
MiddleClasshole345 have hope in yooka laylee or whatever it's called
MiddleClasshole345 sadly not
Yeah, now days it's just "If I have the best graphics, I have the best game" but no one ever realises it's not about the graphics its about the story you get.
It’s not about the story either it’s all about the gameplay if you don’t have good gameplay you have failed to make a good game you may have the best story in the world or the prettiest graphics ever made but if you fail to make fun engaging gameplay you have failed to make a good game
There are a lot of recent games clearly made with passion Sonic Mania and Smash Ultimate for example!
I wish Diddy Kong racing made a comeback.

"Linear" has such a negative connotation now, it might as well be in the same category as the swastika.
The levels are linear, but it just keeps most people playing it
Metro LL and 2033 are both great linear titles. Same thing goes for Bioshock Infinite.
Jo King wait what
Linearity is a double-edged sword, as is nonlinearity. While linearity is limiting, it also allows developers to focus on refining the stage and keeping it consistently interesting. Nonlinearity provides players with more options, but developers can lose focus if they get too wrapped up in it, and a lot of times players will feel as though there is no direction.
Agreed. The main negative criticism I hear about Super Mario 3D World is that it's "too linear", and that's it. No other reason.
00:31 WHO COMES UP WITH THIS?! IT'S AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

Now do Banjo Tooie. In my opinion is one of the best sequels in the history of gaming.
S0lidSpy24 Agree 100%. Tooie is a better game overall. It should get more recognition.
Banjo Kazooie is a masterpiece. Banjo Tooie is an even greater masterpiece.
