A great thing to do on this New Years eve and that's listening to gold such as this from 1971 ( a year I remember fondly) The acoustic guitar on this is out of this world!! Just beautiful,
Wore this tune out on the Alarm Clock album when it first came out. Then when our son was born many years later I used to play this for him most every morning. Great memories.
@@nickhaag2660 thank you. Richie was the opening act at Woodstock 1969. he wasn't scheduled to go on first but all the other acts were stuck in traffic. Richie said he played every song he knew that night, every song he knew.
Although George is my favorite Beatle and one of my all time favorite artists, I've still always liked this version better; at least it wasn't some sorry attempt to sound like the original, Richie made it his own, and black in 1972 this version was a constant over the radio, and AM radio at that. So if you grew up during that time you may have thought it was the original as well because that's all you heard. I was 14 at the time and this song always gave me hope through one of the darkest times of my life after my mother died. It still helps get me through tough times even today, so yes, personally I guess I'm a little biased. Sorry for all that.
@@stephengaydos4346 ..... I was fortunate enough to meet him years ago, and we talked about Woodstock, he told me that he not only played every song he knew, but, the organizers asked him to stall for a little while longer, so he ended up playing some songs twice !!!
This song is a good compagnion through the years. I love it ... since soooo long. Thank you Richie Havens!
One of my favorites of his! Saw Richie 3 times in the 90s. So much positive energy!

And the light pedal steel in the background, with the tight 'bongo' drum jumping in, staying, then jumping out! It is the perfect song.
@@davidornelas5563 An absolute legend.
What an uplifting and hopeful song and add to that richie havens voice and you've got a masterpiece
Boy, I forgot how really great this version was. Thanks for posting it. RIP, Richie. 🌼

way to go Richie. Best version yet.
My yearly winter solstice tradition is listening to my favorite version of this song.
Best cover ever!!

2nd day of fall (9-23), is it too early?
@@imasonofadeadbeat2928 Way too early but why not do it anyway?
@@robertgaddy3142 Sounds good! 😉👍
love , love , love you Richie Havens
Saw the late Richie Havens perform this live in 1996-He really did justice to this all-time Beatles classic.
He didn't do justice to it, he greatly improved it.
Raw energy comes from the heart on that guitar but God said if we don't cry out the rocks will great tune
This is the best version of the song!
Live at the cellar bar.Washington,is probably slightly more dynamic and gets the pulse racing..
Many, if not most, cut out the awesome minute+ guitar intro--shame, it shows how darn of a great guitar player Richie was RIP
This was the recessional song at my 1971 high school graduation in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
I did not hear the Beatles version until years later.
As only RICHIE HAVENS could cover this.OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!
With that style, the sun is here already😊
As a 12 year old I first heard this on, of all radio stations, a jazz music radio station. Btw, I loved it.
The definitive, superlative cover! 🎉 Did George Harrison and the other Beatles love it? ❤ They _must_ have!
Solstice 2021. Beatles, Havens and Miss Nina Simone. All excellent.
Fantastic🎉😢
I LOVE RICHIE HAVENS
This and Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out" are the two best Beatles covers ever.
I have the felt the same way about those two songs for a long time!
Add Joe Cocker, "With a Little Help From My Friends."
Joyous!!!!
Always liked this version better than the Beatles. Since I first heard it in 1972 when I was 12
Abbey Road is one of my all time favorite albums, but I have to agree with you! Best Wishes
Full length of the late Mr.Havens verse. long intro!
Acoustic but electrifying
Great
Ah, 1971
Question : who is playing pedal-steel guitar on this version ?
Please God, can we start making good music again? What they call music now, I call garbage.
I think you mean "mainstream" music, and I agree. But there is a heap ton of great indie or underground music out there.
@@Catz1987 show me
I thought R.H. was the original.?
The Beatles are the original.
George Harrison Dude! Abbey Road man!
yes I love this version but cmon Beatles version always best, George singing yes it's better
look I like Havens & Beatles , I posted this on account no one has put up a decent soundind 45 mix.

@@nickhaag2660 Thank you for this, Nick. It's a beautiful version.
Sorry, babe. The Beatles did it better.
