The biggest misconception I had was " I have never played a Final Fantasy game or know anything about it so how could I enjoy it when I literally know nothing?" The game stands pretty good on its own and it teaches you everything you need to know about the world.

The nice thing about Final Fantasy games is that they're set in different worlds without a consistent story linking them, so each game does stand alone. That said, FFXIV does have a TON of references to older games in the series, which I find enjoyable as a long time fan. These references are more like easter eggs though, so you don't miss anything by not recognizing them.

    • @Pendji

As someone who played only one Final Fantasy game, FFX, I went into it only knowing about the stuff from that game. Let me tell you, seeing some FFX references were awesome and made me feel like I had it in. However, that doesn't compare to the intrigue and curiosity of researching all the other little easter eggs and changes in the Final Fantasy series that FFXIV drops. If I had time to play more, I would 100% try out the other FF games purely because FFXIV has dropped references about them.

To be honest I joined 14 because of the attack animations. After playing WoW and getting used to just random flailing for attacks, it felt amazing to see these animations look so detailed and believable. Especially Dragoon's. First time I saw the animation for Chaos Thrust I was hooked.

I played wow since late vanilla. Even stuck with it through Draenor. 14 is a MUCH better game. I was super hyped for vanilla until I actually tried FF out. It should say a lot about a game when you're looking forward to the old version.

@@1337penguinman Sad thing is, I played WOW during the tail end of WOD.......I loved it, don't get me wrong, but considering it was basically my first real MMO experience, I think it was more the magic of the lore that drew me in, cause one thing I'll admit is that WoW has some incredibly interesting lore and backstory to it. It's just a shame the writers don't take advantage of that.
Sometimes I miss those days, where WoW wasn't all shit, and I could enjoy playing my Troll Elemental Shaman Tuskmanu, proud warrior of the Horde and hero of the Darkspears!........."sigh" god I miss it sometimes.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 4 роки тому +2

Yeah, many attacks have had the same animations in WoW for years. They are *finally* adding a few more in, but FFXIV has, for the most part, unique animations for every single melee and physical ranged skill with only a few spells sharing some animations (and they are even slowly distancing away from that, even!). In WoW... it doesn't matter if you have a 2h sword, a 2h axe, or a 2h hammer... a Paladin's Crusader Strike is still Crusader Strike which looks the same as a couple Arms Warrior skills. I can't think of any melee attacks in FFXIV that share animations between the jobs, heck, I can't think of any that are shared, at all. And these are complex animations. Ever busted out a Dragon Kick as a monk and watch your character do a flip in the air, land on their back and spider jump back up onto their feet? lol. That stuff is awesome. Or how about Chaos Thrust? Or Disembowel. Or any of the SAM attacks.

@@crimsonwizahd2358 Yeah, I remember seeing that and thinking how cool it looked. Although, I think it is similar to the Gravity animation IIRC. Just slightly different (your character is hovering a globe between their hands, instead of holding a staff but a similar body pose). Unless, of course, they changed it which could very well be. I also liked the highest Stone animation from Stormblood, where your character would do a spin and hover in the air while casting. lol. Or that staff twirl with Aero as if the staff is what creates the air vortex that powers the spell. That was awesome.

@@Squallcloud95 think that's how most/every MMO is though... combat is very basic at the beginning. But you learn one skill at a time, so you (hopefully) will learn how to utilize it properly in the time it takes for you to LevelUp&AcquireANewSkill. I've leveled every job to atleast50.... the only class i truly felt bored with was Archer/Bard, it is getting a lil more fluid as I level (the 3rd song helps, so you can have a song up at all times), but it's still my most-boring class to me. (I lvled SCH, didn't rly touch SMN... but doing SMNquests anyway, but I think I would've been bored with SMN as well).
--You can get max level fairly quickly by JUST doing the MSQ... and if you're a story-person, then time will just melt by. If you don't care about story, then yes; it will feel like a griiiiiind that never ends.
--FF, however, has decently positioned unlockables... you get chocobo-buddies fairly early, roulettes, CLog (IIRC it's unlocked via a Limsa Quest)... all these mini-rewards are gamechanging IMO and they encourage you to stay.

I met my wife playing FFXI. So, we were both happy to jump into FFXIV. I bought it for my wife , and held off on buying my own copy. That game was a complete disaster. We were so sad, and just continued to play FFXI. When ARR came out, we jumped in both feet at release and have really loved it. We especially like the slower pace of the game, that you can take breaks from the game, come back and not really be too far behind, and can catch up relatively quickly. Yoshi has said that was part of the design philosophy of the game, that you don't have to log in every single day to stay relevant. And since my wife and I have two children to raise into little gamers, we like being able to step away every now and again and FFXIV makes it so easy.

yea, that's prettymuch the Thing about the FinalFantasys... Lore-wise there is very little, if anything, connecting all the sequels.
With the exception of games like FF10 & FF10-2 which ARE sequels to the prevGame-sharing-the-same-Roman-numeral.
You could play the FFs in ANY order (or even omit a few) and the storytelling doesn't change at all.
There's a few nods here and there...
ex. Nearly EVERY FF has a character named Cid, Biggs, & Wedge. Also the "Primal names" are there (titan, shiva, garuda, etc)
Chocobos are a staple to the series as well.

The FF games do put in a lot of references to the older titles but it's typically not necessary to know them to understand the story being presented in the game you're currently playing. It can be a fun little tug on you nostalgia if you do know them but you don't really miss out on anything important if you didn't play the particular game being referenced. For instance the whole Crystal Tower raid was cool and I enjoyed it a lot but I never got far enough in FF3 to know anything about it prior to playing through it in FF14 and I really didn't feel left out because the context of the story filled in the parts I needed to know.

I came here to hear the perspective on the thumbnail and loved the Ice cream comparison. Very well done there. I didn't expect to hear about the combat speed as much as the speed of fetch quests, back and forth teleporting, how long it takes to get to lvl 30 so you can finally play scholar, how long it took to get to heavensward so you can finally play astrologian, or how long it took to get to unlock sage.
Those questions do have different answers based on attention span and whether or not the MSQ actually kept your attention early on, or if you got sick of the dialogue 20 minutes in and just skipped over everything you saw till you saw Ifrit summoned and had to backpedal to get the context of how he came into being like I did. From then on I paid more attention and it was around there that the story became "decent".
It was around castrum meridianum that I felt genuinely invested in the story, and the praetorium was where the story felt hyped up to my expectations.
This was back when the minstrels ballad: Ultima's Bane was genuinely considdered hard and I felt like a badass for being able to solo heal that as scholar.
So the TLDR is yes. It was slow, but it was rewarding. I don't know how on earth anybody has the patience to play multiple characters though. Or how they have the time to level them. That is far beyond my realm of understanding XD

Combat in FFXIV feels much faster in "higher levels" due to heavy movement mechanics as well.
When i started my FFXIV free trial, it was painfully slow when it takes 2.5 sek after infliicting a lvl 2
Ladybug with Bio and than another 2.5 sek for Ruin, and another 2.5 sek for Ruin, and another 2.5 sek for Ruin......
But once i got into the Dungeons with almost every Mob having this telegraphed AOE you need to move out
it began to start speeding up. So its not only about GCD and OffGCDs and how many skills you can use within
10 secs, but also how many things you have to due while fighting.
Even though WOW has a shorter Combat, you dont have to pay attention to as many gamemechanics, maybe
later once you get into M+ but not in normal dungeons or even in open world PVE.

FFXIV also has a whole bunch of optional content that even I haven't done. It has a lot to offer.

At first (I started around patch 2.1 or 2.2) I thought it was a WoW clone as FFXIV had pretty much the same play style: kill monsters, get quests, get levels, get loot and then repeat.
But FFXIV had more. Only needing one character to experience all the classes (and more importantly the story) was awesome. The crafting system is second to none. Being the center of the story is a great feeling. And having played previous FF games made for some cool nostalgia.
Although as others have mentioned the lv1-50 and 2.x MSQ are rather slow and tedious. DPS jobs are pretty boring until the mid 50s when you have more oGCD skills.

*"FFXIV is only for FF Fans."*
I have 4 friends i threw into the game who might have a word with you now, two of which have it as thier first MMO & FF game ever and are in fucking love.
    *"The story is so boooring!"*
The beginning can be boring but, for fucks sake, it would be more boring being the OP hero with the madlad stories right away. You have to work for that title and things happen that are boring, but its all worth it when you can run around as a half-naked rendeer man and have people whisper your name in fear.
*"Everything is made way too sexy."*
    Google: Roegadyn & Lalafell
Jokes aside, look at EVERY OTHER MMO and tell me gay to the face its something unusual. NPCs are very fine detailed and in no way overly sexy, the only sexything walking the earth is your goddamn character because you dress them like that. If its too sexy, change gear/glamour.
I like to see my half-naked rendeer man.
*"But i have to pay to play! :( "*
Half-True (soon to be less than half true lolololo), there is a free Trial Launcher you can grab that allows you to play till Lv35 (max Level is 70 atm pre-Shadowbringer) and that counts for all classes.
So you can play the game, for free, till you have ALL classes on 35 on ONE character.
That takes time and is 150% worth it as you can keep said character when you start buying playtime aka the acual game.
Important is: Make your SE account & download the launcher in one go, just to avoid problems some of my friends had because they thought they can download the launcher later.
Do it in one go and be happy. Takes like 4hrs with super, duper, slow as fuck internet. Which i expect only a few have acually.

Yeah, not gonna lie. ARR is rough. Patch 2.5 onward is where the story finally gets good, IMO.

I feel called out by these story times. XD I've been playing... 14 months now, and I just got done with the Doma section of Stormblood. There's stopping to smell the roses, and then there's me... stopping to smell every single NPC, multiple times, getting distracted by so many side objectives... oh god. There's so much.

Combat got insanely fast at my first dungeon yesterday. Got insanely fun. I dont mind the grind either, just been having fun going through all of the quests. My mistake was trying to level all classes, but had fun when I just focused on one class

Played MMorPGs since 2005, and FFXIV has surpassed EQ2 as my 2nd favorite games of all time. Wildstar still top for it's raiding and general insanity.

I was so into Wow for the better part of 14 years, that even as a Huge FF fan, I had trouble getting into FFXIV, because I couldn't get used to the system/game flow. I couldn't let go of Wow. It was a bittersweet break up in the end when I finally forced myself to give FFXIV a real chance. I never looked back. I was so impassioned by my experience I even did a short series of why I left and how FFXIV has impacted me. I take my time, I've never felt so at ease in an MMO. Your videos teach me something new my experiences haven't taught me yet and so many "yup I've done that" realizations. Thanks for being honest and relatable!

Common misconception i get asked is "is it turned based?"

    • @kkeungi5955
      @kkeungi5955 4 роки тому

I almost got into an argument with a friend because they assumed it was like old and turn based and kept saying "I don't like combat in that style" and of course I was like "what do you mean in that style" since a lot of other MMOs have the sameish setup. We were not on the same page AT ALL.
