    I started FF XIV in April, when the first lockdown hit and my pen & paper group wasn't able to meet any more. Back then the free triall was only to lvl 30. And after that I was kind of sold, but not fully, because you have so few skills at the beginning. I still bought the game and am playing since then.
    With the current trial going till lvl 60, there's really nothing to loose and people should just try it. At that point the story and the gameplay are at its best. And if you start now, the amount of content is just overwhelming at lvl 80.

    I never understood why cat and bunny people bothered anyone ? Especially when WoW has Vulpera now....
    The only "problem" (and it's not even a real problem) I have with the Viera is their starting lingerie outfit. To me that's almost too much like TERA's female races/aesthetic out of the gate. I never felt like FFXIV made races hypersexualized until them - but if players wanted to glamour that way then all the power to them and that's fine.
    Also if any one complains about lala's but are fine with gnomes in warcraft, then get stuffed lol.

    • @thatrandomperson8585
      @thatrandomperson8585 3 роки тому +2

      The reason the Vieras wear what they do as beginning outfits is because they are wearing the same outfit, and are the same race as Fran from FFXII. So it’s still a somewhat sexual outfit but at least there is a reason behind it.

    My second time starting FFXIV, or rather, my true first time playing, all I did was pick the ‘mage with the book.’ Now I’m a lv 66 Summoner who finally enjoys doing somewhat moderate amounts of DPS. Loving Stormblood and all previous main stories, though. That’s what keeps me going.

  • @anthonytangeman945
    @anthonytangeman945 3 роки тому +4

    I want to preface this and say I do love FFXIV and how it's essentially a celebration of Final Fantasy as a whole. That's probably my favorite thing about the game.
    Speaking to the video, specifically the first point, I do think that the lvl 1 to 60ish experience is rather lackluster from a gameplay perspective, at least for an mmo veteran. This is especially true if you play a healer. Yes, it's not the end game, so I don't expect it to be perfect. However, I do think if Square Enix wants to have better odds at reeling in and keeping new players subscribed, they could stand to focus on the early game experience and make it more engaging.
    Something that has bothered me more recently however is the way healers are treated in this game (no, I'm not talking about healers having to dps). I think the gradual shift of giving healers more healing abilities and paring down dps abilities has been a problem. There was a lot of talk pre-Shadowbringers from Yoshi P about healers having more of a focus on healing. Well, the toolkit went that way, but fight design didn't really accomodate that.
    This is especially an issue if you're someone like me who is skilled at the game and has done extreme/savage content before, but does not raid anymore (my schedule is just too erratic for it nowadays). It has made normal content especially boring to run except for day 1 of content release. And yes, I'm not expecting normal mode content to be thrilling all the time. But at least a dps has the fun of actually playing and mastering their job, whereas healers (and likely tanks to a lesser degree) have over time become more homogenized and as a result less fun and engaging to play. As it stands, I go into content HOPING that people haven't done it before and/or I'm paired up with not so competent players just to make things more hectic and strenuous lol
    Ultimately, I think the goal should be that every job/role, at every class level and at every instance difficulty should be fun, engaging, and rewarding to play. I've kind of shelved healers unless playing with friends and instead have been focusing on dps and having a MUCH better time. Going beyond the healer role in general, I wasn't thrilled about the Astro changes since Shadowbringers, and the Sleeve Draw change was the final nail for me. I've never been a huge SCH fan, but I liked how it used to have a bunch of dots. WHM, while Aflatus Misery is cool and all, I really just wish we had aoe Aero back lol
    I'm hoping the next expansion changes things for me healer-wise, but I'm not holding my breath. While no doubt healers are fun to play in savage and ultimate content, and I don't think healers should absolutely have to play that content to be engaged.

    I’ve been playing FF14 for 10 years. Was there for the alpha and I’ve never regretted it. The story is wonderful and beautiful and painful and horrible all at once and it is the game’s best feature in my opinion. The combat is unique and with 18 different jobs it’s impossible not to find something you like. The challenge is there for those looking for it. Don’t underestimate the “cute” looking game. Sometimes I’m too busy to play any game, but this one is the one I will always go back to. Here’s to a good few years more. Thank you SquareEnix. And thank you Desperius for sharing the love. I played ESO for 5 years as a hardcore raider that would compete for world-firsts every update. I love the game but every patch has major bugs and i just couldnt put up with it anymore after their developers would not even acknowledge our forum posts about their broken game, so i quit cold turkey. I decided to try WoW again after a 12 year break and got Cutting Edge within 3 months. Then i decided to try out ffxiv and i am so glad i did. You are right on point about the game being super slow at first, at least it was pretty boring combat as a summoner until lvl80 really, but it was sooo refreshing to finally play an mmorpg that had such an amazing main story that i was so immersed into every word from every character. Looking back at previous games ive played, i cant believe i had been okay with doing so many quests that were so pointless and dull and disconnected from the point of the game that i had eventually just been spamming through them as fast as possible and skipping half the dialogs because how irrelevant they were. There is a lot of depth and complexity in ffxiv, and i am really glad i tried it, and even more glad that i finished all of the main story quests, because it has been far too long since i have done a quest that actually produced an emotional response

      @rick mel It's obviously only until you unlock a spec and not representative of the games speed in any way but I mostly point it out as an example of how the WoW community calls FF14 slow but has its own levelling issues with certain classes as well. I still enjoyed myself but yeah definitely a strange moment for me.

    • @Zoey--
      @Zoey-- 3 роки тому

      @rick mel That's an opinion and not a fact. I think only ARC and healing jobs suffer from this in FF14 heavily and have levelled every job to 80 to experience it all myself. Those were the only ones that caused me suffering and again most that suffering is mitigated if you pick them as a job after already having a full level 80. Not only due to armoury and other exp bonuses but full game knowledge and knowing how to level efficiently literally removing early game slow down. Not to mention to need to do the entire MSQ. It's literally a misconception as stated in this video that it is 'slow'. In WoW I find the only content exists late game therefore they literally rush you towards it. FF14 doesn't do that. It's a design difference.

    Just started end game raiding about to get my first crystarium weapon upgrade. I have only 2 problems with this game:
    1. Some MSQs made me feel like gauging my eyes out. (The glorified errant boy ones)
    2. Since Tera was the only mmo ive played, I hate how you have to completely rely on tanks and healers to survive as a dps.

    I guess I'm lucky I already made a successful transition to FFXIV and didn't another year in an MMO I didn't really enjoy anymore...
    "slow combatsystem": yeah, I heard that one before. The only thing I can say is, in WoW and GW2 I can type in chat at my hearts content during every encounter (excluding raids of course with all the coordination with your team ontop of the fighting). In FFXIV I can't even read chat or even notice it while I'm doing some quests in den open world! I can barely type a "hello" in chat while fighting in dungeons, and how often have I overlooked FC chat because I was fighting a random mob in Dravania or somesuch? In short, fighting system in FFXIV is very demanding of your attention, even in the lower 50 levels.
    "all about story" - No complaints there but we already know of players who don't really care about it and still have a blast playing the game because of other content. For me, it's the story and the fact that your character actually grows and develops. Something I missed in WoW ever since the talent system there got more or less frozen in place with borrowed power every next expansion to force you to grind through it. Here, I learn a new skill every couple levels and it sometimes changes my rotation significantly. Whoever with SE is responsible for that, I don't doubt a lot of work went into it - and you notice. Not to mention those incredible visuals...
    "the JRPG Thing". Yeah, I'm not an anime-fan, I've kinda grown out of it (sorta...), but ingame those elements are far and few between. If you play of course in the "Far East" ingame and see Kugana und Yanxia, well, yes, the style is unmistancly asian. I think, you can call it a homage of SE to it's own culture, plus those strong elements of chinese, mongolese (?) and so on. But it has little to nothing to do with japanese anime stereotypes. Actually, it's outside those zones where the anime-moments might surprise you. Actually, the anime is often hiding in cutscenes: camera angle, lighting, focus... all these are anime-like (for me), as well as the music playing in trivial scenes, may it be serious, sinister, silly or triumphant, or just plain stupid and funny.
    Don't know if I like that SE makes the game free-to-play till lvl60 on every job... so many people are freeloading it seems, it's sad... Though yes, especially combat system makes a huge jump after lvl50, so that might be a good reason... ... still ^^° I started my free trial in March this year... and after only a single day, I got my subscribtion. Needless to say, I didn't regret a single cent ^.^ Given that you and you character start out a noobs in the game, of course you wont slay dragons on your first assignment. The game actually prepares you with seemingly annoying quests to face stronger bosses (Wesk Alber just made a very good video about all the pre-quests for the Titan Trial - I warmly recomment). It doesn't just throw you at sharks (except the story demands it... Zenos... Ranjit... ... it was so, SO satisfying finishing off Ranjit, I tell you...) and makes sure you actually have an idea what you're getting yourself into. Plus, the single-player and multi-player elements are really well balanced: you have a great time with a group and still feel like you're the one the story evolves around - and this illusion isn't destroyed by the fact that everybody else thinks the same :D
    ... I think this is my longest comment yet...

      @Shadow-iy7js 3 роки тому +2

      Okay so let me address your points as someone who enjoys FF14 but doesn't agree with almost any of your statements.
      1. Slow Combat System - It is. No matter how you put it, FF14 compared to other MMOs in the market has a slow combat system. This is especially true for the entire base-game of FF14: ARR. The fact that people have to point to a very specific job (ninja) to make the point that combat is "fast" is telling. If the combat is fast paced it should be universal, not apply to a few specific jobs. But even though it gets faster with each expansion, it's only faster in that expansion's content, if you reach shadowbringers content and then run a realm reborn dungeon in leveling roulettes the combat is objectively slower and that slowness is something that everyone has to play through until they reach Heavensward and by that I mean, the end of Heavensward. But even looking at your example, I'm going to call something out and say you either weren't playing games like GW2 and WoW properly, or you're lying. Because there is no way on God's green earth, that you played those games combat and were able to type in chat and have full conversations, but couldn't do that in FF14. No way. I especially think you're lying because overworld mobs that aren't fate bosses/hunts are freakin cakewalk. In fact most story/overworld encounters can be completed spamming 1 ability the entire time (it may take longer but it's possible) because that content was made to be braindead easy so that everyone can get through the story content.
      2. All About Story - I agree with you that the game leans heavily into it's story and this is both a good and bad thing. If you love the story, then this is basically perfect for you. But there is no such thing as an objectively good story, and so people who aren't fans of it, will be subjected to a very terrible slog. Unfortunately in my honest opinion, because that's all it is, an opinion, the ARR story is bad. Very bad. It is a slog to play through, the characters have almost no characterization and are rather boring, the villains are evil mustache twirling bad-guys, and there's even an evil empire to boot. The story for ARR is basically nothing special, nothing that blows me away, is it better than other MMO stories? For ARR I don't think so, for me GW2, SWOTOR, and ESO had much more engaging stories for me than ARR did. Now maybe ARR has a better overarching story, but the fact that you have to wait till the expansions to experience it is a huge minus, and the way they tell their story in ARR leaves much to be desired.
      3. The JRPG thing - FF14 is very anime. Anyone who doesn't believe that is in active denial, doesn't know what makes an anime an anime, or is lying to try and get people who wouldn't like anime to play the game. Final Fantasy as a series is extremely anime, and FF14 is no different. Now maybe it's story beats are more mature than: "Friendship is power" but it's still very anime. I think when people say FF14 isn't anime, they're saying it's not like a stereotypical anime (huge eyes, young child characters (Shonen), everyone's asian, etc.) but that isn't what makes an anime an anime. It's the story-telling and character tropes. The fact that it isn't in your face asian doesn't mean it's not an anime and is a weird metric to measure. The game is very anime, from it's characters, to it's tropes, to a lot of the plot points. In some cases predictably so (at least in ARR) if you've read manga or watched a lot of anime. But to say that it isn't very anime or that it is in spades, is some major denial.
      4. SE needed to make the base game and first expansion free to play. Because unlike other games, you WILL NOT have a good idea of the game by the old lvl35 metric they had before. You won't. The combat system is boring, very slow, and incomplete for most job classes with a few exceptions (ninja). The story is not very engaging and doesn't give a good idea of the type of storytelling that FF14 has. ARR was shit. I'm sorry but I'm going to say it. The game was shit. They got lucky because 1.0 was so bad, and it's players were so desperate for a FF mmo, that ARR was considered good by the player base because anything was better than 1.0. However, this is 2020, the gameplay for ARR feels very dated and so it made sense for them to not only streamline it (and I feel they could have done more in that regard) and make it free to play. That way players can actually get through that slog and into HW which is a more realistic view of how the game works. In that regard making the expansion free as well also gives incentives for players to get through it.
      As for your other points:
      - Most MMOs have you starting off as a nobody adventurer in some regard, yes some give you the chosen one stuff but let's be real the first cutscene in ff14 insinuates you are a chosen one, and the first level 5 story establishes you as someone special too. The difference between those other MMOs and FF14, is that they are able to tell the story of a nobody adventurer better than FF14. I don't feel like an adventurer in ff14 ARR, I feel like a glorified maid/servant. No other adventurers are going around picking up people's trash, taking orders in a bar, moving packages, etc. Only we are. And it plays terribly and boringly.
      - I watched that Wesk Alber video, and honestly it's not that good. It doesn't actually give a reason for why the questline is good. It just explains the logic behind the questline. And for many people I don't think that was the problem with that particular questline. We all know why the stuff is happening and why things panned out the way it did. However, it played boringly, felt like a slog, and removed all agency in what was happening at the time. Just because their is a reason for a story beat to happen doesn't make it a good story. And he never made a good case for why it was good. And even if he did, it would just be subjective, you can't really objectively measure whether a story is good or not. It's subjective, he liked the story and was trying to give reasons as too why the questline pans out the way it does. But who was that video for? People who didn't like that questline weren't going to watch that and then go: "Oh wow, he's right, the horrible slog of a questline that almost made me quit the game, it's actually good, and I just wasn't enlightened enough to understand that." No. That video was for people who already liked it and wanted confirmation on their opinion. And because of that the video came off as very snarky and condescending towards people who didn't like that particular questline.
      With all that said I'm happy you enjoyed the game so much and I hope you continue to enjoy your time in Eorza, I know that even with all it's problems, I am!

      I don't think you're lying, you sound genuinely enthusiastic about the game and that's great to hear. :)
      Objectively though, I don't think the low-level experience of XIV deserves to be defended. When your class is super slow and the MSQ gives you fetch quests to prepare a banquet while a primal is supposedly on the loose, it's honestly not a great experience. You don't want new players to make their opinion of the game when the game is at its worst, and "wait until Heavensward" is a big ask when there are so many other games to play.
      I actually agree with you that the combat is a lot more fun (at least to me) than WoW or even GW2 around level 60+. (More specifically, I think the classes are more fun to play than those other games, even though the combat is a bit less fluid.) But does it matter if people quit at level 30 or during the post-ARR section? No, it's too late. If the game "gets good" at Heavensward, giving Heavensward for free is actually a good idea. (I just hope it doesn't make the early game toxic. I can see pugs having less restraint if they have a throwaway account and already want to quit due to bad early game.)
      Personally, it took me 3 attempts and a bad WoW expansion to get motivated to get through ARR, and mind you, I've been a huge fan of all things Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger since had a Super Nintendo. I hear they significantly improved it a recent patch (I haven't played XIV since 5.1 so I don't know), so hopefully you didn't have it as bad as I did, but ultimately I think Square-Enix should take the Guild Wars 1 campaign approach of giving you a choice of multiple starting stories that all eventually branch into the main story. And then REALLY polish that new one. (Remember you have New Game+ if you want to try it.)

    I’ve put in a lot of time into FF14. I like the story a lot, but I’m going to tell you, I still don’t like the combat system. I’ve played a healer (scholar), a mage (summoner), 3 melee dps (ninja, samurai, dragoon), and 3 tanks (drk, warrior, and gnb). At best it’s clunky at worst you are stuck monitoring cooldowns and dots.
    I haven’t played WoW in a while, but GW2 has my by far favorite battle system followed closely by Tera. Both of them are built in such a way that you can muscle memory everything and keep your focus entirely on the bosses and do clutch blocks / dodges.
    As for FF14, I find Samurai decently fun but still nowhere close to GW2 combat. Ff14 still has cute character designs and role playing elements ahead of GW2 though.

      As a DRK I am constantly scared that I'll fail and the world will end around me. But those skills are on muscle memory as well.

However because of that it feels more clunky and less responsive than other MMOs which were created with MMO gamers in mind. FF14 was created with Final Fantasy fans in mind. And there is nothing wrong with that, it’s a final fantasy game. Just as a seasoned MMO player, I find the mmo side to be lacking. The Final Fantasy side is perfect tho.
      Note this isn’t me wishing it would change, it’s perfect for its audience. It’s just not for me beyond the story. Once I finish the story content, I’ll be moving on. I know they already cut some of the chaff in job design, but after playing from zero in ARR to 80 and the end of Shadowbringers core, over the past couple monthes, as an MMO vet, I can tell you the NPE is to blame for alot of these misconceptions. They don't hold true for Heavensward onwards as you mentioned, but they do for ARR.
    Three things really need to happen;
    1 - oGCD abilities need to be introduced much more frequently and at far lower levels. These should be appearing en masse from level 10 onwards. You shouldn't have to wait till Level 50+ for these to appear in practical amounts.
    In addition to this, abilities that define the pillars of what makes a job different from it's same role kin, should be avaliable much earlier too. For example Red Mages should get Verraise/Cure much earlier, or Paladins should be getting Clemency, Dragoons should be getting BotD and related skills, etc, by or at around 30, or at least a weaker equivalent that automatically upgrades with level.
    This would go along way to tackling the "slow, boring combat" misconception, and just make low level roulette more fun. This is the biggest issue I feel.
    2 - Key gameplay features are locked behind obscure or hidden quests. Do you know I had almost finished ARR before I stumbled upon the Challenge Log? This stuff needs to be streamlined.
    Challenge Log, Achievements, Sightseeing Log, Glamour, etc, and similar features, should all be unlocked as soon as you create your character or at the very least during your initial walkaround of your starting city. If you are not guaranteed to have these things unlocked by level 10, game design has gone terribly wrong - and you can miss out on alot because of it.
    You don't need to bombard the player with popup help messages about them either, if they're worried about information overload. Most people will instinctively figure out most of these anyway.
    3 - ARR Story and Post-Game Pre-HW Story needs to be streamlined or remade, one or the other. I know they already removed some quests, but it's absolutely not enough. Not even close. The jump in content quality from ARR to HW is MASSIVE. But many people won't have the patience to stick it out that long to get to the good stuff, and I don't blame them. Base ARR Story is mediocre to okay at best, and downright awful, poor and boring at worst. I bet alot of people don't have the patience for it and drop the game before it get's good because of it, never to give it another chance. No, MTX story skip potion is NOT a solution - why would people spend extra money on something they aren't enjoying? Why should they have to anyway?
    On a related note, HW jobs should be relocated to acquisition quests in ARR areas at 30 (with the StB and ShB jobs also being brought down to level 30 unlock), so people can play what they want to play as their main sooner. I've read about many people disheartened at the current requirements here, and I know the game has lost potential players because of this. It's in everybody's best interests for that not to happen.
    Do these three simple things, and I feel the game would much more easily garner favour within other communities and be taken more seriously, nipping these misconceptions based on part-truths in the bud early enough to not wear out people's patience first.

It's really about the aesthetics and the vibe I think I'll get if I played. GW2 is getting their voice overs for the most current story and I'm heading that way after I finish up another relic farming batch. Oh I add that last part in just to point out that even though I like FFXIV I will always be playing other games. I play FFXIV a lot but by my own standard..I'm not a hardcore player.

    But if it's not your thing, I'm here to let you know you can safely skip it (using the boosts from the cash-shop) and still have a lot of fun with this game.

    Been playing FFXIV for a while now but recently switched to WoW for a reason you mentioned, aesthetic. Sorry to say it but WoW just has a better style overall imo, the combat feels WAY more fluid & offers more endgame content, not to mention this is the best time to try WoW as the level cap has been reduced to 50.

      It's personal pref. For me personally? I really dislike the way WoW "looks" aesthetically and design wise (forgetting it's age for a moment). I don't like the gear styles or a lot of the environements or boss design. Though I'm sure WoW is a great game to play, I tried for a few months, it just wasn't for me.

      Well, Final Fantasy sure isn't for everyone. So it's good you're enjoying WOW. Maybe I am not seeing the huge amount of endgame content, but when I compare game-wikis it seems to be a rather similar amount. With wow having a bigger amount of PVP stuff.

      As someone who also returned to WoW, I have to disagree sorta. The combat is certainly more fluid in WoW but I'm not sure I'd say it's more fun when even a simpler job like red mage has a more interesting rotation than pretty much all the classes and specs I have in WoW. I find WoW's class complexity to be in build crafting, not in its minute to minute gameplay. I was looking forward for the "great unpruning" to put back some oomph into WoW's class rotations but it didn't improve things as much as I had hoped for. (Except for shadow priests but they got a full class overhaul.) Also, outside of a few outliers like paladins, shadow priests and demon hunters, I think they're a bit lacking in the style and class identity department. I know some people don't care how cool their character look in combat, but I do.
      In addition, I think you're confusing "end-game content" with "challenging content" if you think WoW has more of it because holy sh-- they do not. A "major path" in WoW is basically an 8 to 12-boss raid, and if planets are aligned we might get a new zone, a new dungeon or a new PvP arena (but usually neither.) That's it. WoW is a million times better for people looking for serious challenge like raids and mythic+ (that's why I came back to WoW personally, so not contesting that) but if I wasn't an heroic raider I would immediately quit WoW and return to FFXIV.
      Aesthetics comes down to personal preference. I think both games look great and have a nice art style. Despite its age I think Guild Wars 2 looks better than either game, but they all look a lot better than ESO and SW:TOR to me.

    After having all classes leveled I still see the flaws of the game as I first started it
    The game is too damn slow especially for newer player who wants to catch up with their friends
    The Story overall was good if you really put attention into reading most of it
    and I still don't understand why for a subscription based game why are most of the quests have no voice even for main scenario quests
    also most of the game you can play through like a Single player game (just like me) this could be seen as a pos or con
    still I'm resubbing again just to find out what the hell am I to do after grinding all the jobs
    Try the trial if you havn't but don't expect it to be very engaging in the early stage of the game

    I like how desperately you want people to play the game but you don't have to down right lie . The game is a grind fest period you play any other MMO for 8 hrs. and then you play FFXIV for 3 hours and your ground into dirt tired . Just by starting off with no.1 that the game is slow and in that section you talk about the complexity of the game and barely talk about if its true about slowness of it shows how your white washing it. You say the biggest complaint is the slowness of it but put 2 seconds into the topic on your list and then stuff it with comentary on the complexity of the controls which should be a topic of it's own shows how not just biased to the game down right lieing to people about it.
    I like FFXIV for my own reasons but I'm not going to lie about the grind it's bad very bad. So instead of trying to convince people that what there feeling in the game and going thru is a lie you should be making videos telling Yoshi P to rework the horrible grind.

    While i agree with the artstyle being on the top of most mmos, also the combat system is very fun and engaging.
    I totally disagree about the world and the story......... The world feels cramped and tiny compared to any other mmos (yes i know, weak console hardware tribute)
    ....and the story? ..its garbage and super boring... with totally unlikeable characters like alphinaud, tataru ...
    But the heavy instanced world caused me to stop playing... it is even more pronounced when you unlock flying mounts...

    The first point about the combat system, as a person who had played the game since beta up and until finally quitting the game permanently in shadow bringers with those horrific jobs homogenizing and simplification changes....the shit is boring as fuck to play now CURRENTLY no matter what portion of the game you wish to play. JOBS DO NOT PLAY DIFFERENTLY, also a lie you told. The 3rd misconception I have never heard anyone cry about, but if anyone is wondering the character creation leaves a lot to be desired across the board.

    3 major misconceptions of FF14.
    It isn't a rythem game. It boils down to, timers and cordination.
    It isn't a slow game. It is slow, they just use a lot of buttons to make it seem fast.
    It isn't a weeb game. Bruh it is ultra weeb.
    I am not hating on FF 14, it is a good game. Sadly, the pro's of FF 14, can also be considered con's, when it comes to MMO's. Really a matter of perspective.
