Don't worry....You never actually get finished repairing these cars. You basically start from the front, and make your way to the rear. Then you make your way from the back to the front, and so on..... They are absolutely lovely cars, but the gremlins just never stop rearing their heads. Old, crusty jokes aside, you are absolutely right. We can never get too much of this .
Superb video. I've had a standard 20VT and an LE and your vid reminds me of just how tricky these beauties were to work on. Can't wait to see what other magic you manage to use to essentially turn some rust and dust into a beautiful Italian stallion. Thanks for your efforts so far! Damn I miss that 5 cylinder sound...
Always wondered how a cambelt change on fiat coupe were done. Heard that especially the 20v turbo were difficult to do and this video shows why. Great video again. Enjoying the series greatly 😁
When you used the bar to lever the engine over , i remember when Fiat use to say it was engine out for cambelt (£1000 +) but my old Alfa master tech mate said it could be done just by losing off an engine mount and leaning the block over , he worked that one out as soon as the first 20Vs arrived . He was a clever lad
Since you are close to the oil filter, do replace the o-ring between the oil filter sandwich and the block. It becomes squarish with time and heat and will not seal with an annoying oil leak as a result. Cheap o-ring and a 100000 miles guarantee. I think it requires an 27mm socket to get it off and some fiddeling with the oil cooler pipes.
Enjoyed watching this though the Coupe 20V Turbo looks a nightmare to work on, no room at all. Will be a beauty when it’s done. Top work mate especially in 38c heat, Christ I think I would collapse.
Im sending fully respect for that kind engine tilting for water pump removing, in my case a had to freed him up from holders and then replaced water pump. Anyway, so much arse pain on engine work, so small room.
Re the slam panel - sounds like you've got a challenge. I say have a go, and if it fails, try for salvage or NOS. If you manage to fix it, make it a separate video and become a hero to all those out there with the same problem!
Another cracking video. You have in the garage 2 of my dream cars... A Coupé and a Barchetta Limited Edition. You at least are a specialist in italian cars and you know what you are doing. Many "multi brand mechanics" that touch these cars, end um damaging them, then people say that Fiat is this or that. That is a big issue in Brazil with the Marea Turbo that has this same engine. Because it is expensive at the dealership, people would go to another mechanic and they ended up damaging the engine because of their lack of knowledge. Have a good one. Regards
That's arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I've always wanted one. It's really lovely the owner wants to spend money on it. Way too many of these have ended up as unloved ornaments in driveways.
Very interesting update, battling in that heat against italian engineering and crustiness is no fun I'm sure so I take my hat off to you! Also noticed the last three letters of the reg, an unfortunate acronym 😬
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing your problems with us. Just a quick suggestion, would it possible for you to do a quick vid on all the tools you use and why you prefer that brand as opposed to others please? I’m a novice in the process of building up my tool chest and would love some advice and guidance. Thanks again
regarding the slam panel. Given the rarity you may well have to find an expert panel fabricator to make a new one for you but you’d need to be able to get either tech drawings or be able to see another to reference. If you can get it of they can use the old one as a pattern. And thanks for this video which was reallly interesting.
Ever think about jet washing under the bonnet and engine before beginning, especially as there is plenty of dry out time. Much nicer to work on a clean engine.
Ace stuff man! Back in the day and in the mechanics manual they used to do an engine out to do cambelts lol...it was either 13 or 23 hours official dealer fiat labour apparently! They really did stuff it all in there mind you! Beautiful engine mind! I’m biased of course🤣🤘Can’t wait for next instalment!
It seems Coupes are generally speaking more rusty in the UK than on mainland Europe. The most rust prone parts: The bracket holding the radiator, the "inverted Eiffel towers" holding the bumpers (front and back), the sills at the wheel arches (due to untreated damages by small stones), from the inside behind the black panels next to the rear seat (water sipping in through the pininfarina badges) and finally behind the black plastic rear wheel arches. One of my two coupes had rust behind the back wheel arches especially, though no structural damage. The other has no rust at all but has always been inside and not near the sea as was the other.
Doing the cambelt on my 1.8 coupe was a lot easier. It helps to have one less cylinder😆 When I took off my slam panel I cut off the bottom part with the rubber and resprayed the rest of it. Don't know how important the rubber is to keep the temp down, in mine it hasn't changed the temperature anyways. I don't mind the music, I liked it😃
I hope you don't mind me saying this but the beginning of your video's always remind me of the ultra short Mark Williams sketches in The Fast Show. "Today we will be having ...". Is it the local accent? :-)

Tip: most of the bolt are the ribe type, not torx. Great vid, first on coupe maintenance I know of. Though there a good how to guides on the fccuk site and there is a book written by two enthousiasts.
I've seen a couple of examples of a way to undo rounded-off bolts/screws. It involves using a hand saw to create a cut through the middle of the bolt's head and then using a flathead screwdriver to undo it using the slice that the saw made. Don't know if you knew, just trying to help out
just wondering, when I saw you changing the cambelt on the Coupe : does it have the variator you'll find on the Barchetta engine ? Not that I would make much sense when you have a turbo charged engine I suppose.

Neil, if you can get what’s left of the old front panel off, would it be possible to make up CAD (cardboard aided design) templates to repair it?
Exceedingly well handled Sir! That's a tight working width! At least the 2 litre Twin Spark Alfas lend a bit more room lol!
You got that right!
Nice one! I would have been very tempted to take out the steam cleaner and clean that engine bay first before working on anything.
not with my dirty gloves best for after its all done.
A friend of mine done that with his coupe and couldnt get it started again because steam got into electronics and electrics

Didnt change the phase sensor while your in there? I did my first coupe 20v turbo timing belt swap when a customers phase sensor failed.
