- 2017 Mazda CX-5 throttle body cleaning.
Please be careful with any electronics around or in the throttle body. Do not disconnect the electronic throttle body position sensor.
Disconnecting connections made at the throttle body can erase any prior programming, requiring you to use a dealership or expensive scan tools to reprogram the throttle body.
I don't think people need to be too concerned about breaking the throttle plate. It's pretty robust. You just push it and it rotates. That simple. It rotates a little less than 90°, but enough to get your rag in there to rub along the circumference. I'll spray a spot on my rag first to make sure there's plenty of the cleaner involved without spraying too much into the throttle body.
I may have exaggerated a bit but these modern day throttle bodies are a lot more sensitive than they used to be.
Why not just remove the TB ? It should be easier to clean?
Removing it can sometimes cause it to need “recalibration” which requires high end scanners or a trip to the dealership
Thanks for the video. Nicely done. What would you think of using a soft toothbrush to gently brush along the inside of the throttle body and valve plate seat (after spraying cleaner) before wiping with your finger/towel to clean up the dirty residue?
Nothing wrong with using a toothbrush. Just be careful not to jam the brush head into anything sensitive. 👍🏼
A toothbrush could possibly loose bristles in the process, and those could end up setting sucked into the combustion chamber. Honestly, unless the buildup in your throttle body is very old and delinquent, it's likely a rag wet with throttle body cleaner should suffice.
Would this throw a check engine light after? Don’t you need to press the gas pedal to open the valve not just with hands?
Certain cars, it’s possible but on this particular one, no. And that method only works on throttle by cable styles.
Do you think I can apply this method of cleaning to a 2018 mazda 3?
Yes. Cleaning throttle bodies are all pretty much the same. Just use caution and be careful fir electrical connectors
Which one of those sensors is the idle control valve?
Hi great video! Wouldn't be easier for you to just take out the throttle body and put it on a bench and clean it? Thank you!
It would be easier to clean it that way but with electronic throttle bodies they need to be reprogrammed once disconnected and a lot of times this requires high dollar scan tools or dealerships to be completed. So it’s better to keep it connected for the average diy’er. Also there are gaskets between the throttle body so once those are broken they’ll likely need to be replaced. 👍🏼
@@HandsOnDismantler surely if battery is disconnected that wouldn't be the case ? I took my egr valve off to clean no issues ! The car should already be programmed for that tb so once battery is reconnected its all good
Will manually pushing the throttle flipper (while cleaning) will caused idling timing out once turning it on?
No it shouldn’t. What’s the issue you’re having?
@@HandsOnDismantler Your car CX5 is it manual gear ?
Did you have an idle problem? At 20k, while I was in for my free oil/filter change my Mazda dealer wanted to clean the throttle body for $200. The car was and still is idling/running fine. Thoughts?
Yes, early morning it would almost die backing out of the driveway. It was better after cleaning the throttle body but I believe the issue was a failing alternator. The vehicle ultimately was given back under lemon law.
@@HandsOnDismantler how does that work? The lemon law? I bought a 2014 from the dealer w the check engine light on and my car bogs until it stabilizes, took it back and they told me to take it to Mazda instead of fixing the issue after selling it to me, car ran fine for a week then went into limp mode at start up, I’d have to turn off and on couple times and then it would drive normal. Has a P0701 code I believe
@@SparkeyMonkey210 you’d have to look at the warranty the dealership offered you when you bought it. If you bought it “as is” then you wouldn’t be able to do lemon law. Lemon law is also a lot more difficult under a used car than it is a new car.
@@HandsOnDismantler thank you my friend, hopefully I find my issue!
Hello there mine is 2019 CX-5 GS AWD 2.5L Non-Turbo….Would it have issues after everything is installed back in and all plugged in perfectly and have the throttle plate shake and have jumping RPMs forcing the Purge Valve? just wanted to make sure…thank you
Hello, I apologize but I’m not understanding your question correctly. Are you trying to say that after you cleaned the throttle body you still have issues with the idle surging?
@@HandsOnDismantler yea boss idle surging issues…after i cleaned it nicely with CRC Throttle Body Cleaner its jumping rpm which it didn’t do before…i just thought of cleaning it since she’s now at 94,400kms….i probably didn’t do the throttle relearning process 😕
@@ronakd.705 possibly, in the video I don’t disconnect the electronics. Disconnecting them can cause issues with the electronic throttle body. Does your vehicle have any check engine codes?
@@HandsOnDismantler yes Engine light stays on…i ordered in a new throttle body tho lol
@@ronakd.705 a new throttle body won’t fix your issue. You need to scan the pcm and get the codes. Chances are if you disconnected the throttle body electrical it might need to be relearned. Even if you order a new throttle body it will need to be relearned.
We need to disconnect the -ve electrode of the battery before start?!
No, do not disconnect the sensor
Hi i have cx-5 2.2 diesel mk1, i am having p0101 error and trying to look for the throttle body to clean but don't know where is it located would be big help if you know where is the throttle body located on 2.2 diesel thanks
Diesel engines don’t have your typical throttle body as a gas engine does. But it’s similar nun the less. P0101 I believe is the MAF sensor. They sell MAF sensor spray cleaner. You should be able to follow the air intake starting from your air filter box and follow it back until to meets with your intake manifold. It might be towards the firewall. “Rear of engine”
Cuantos kms tiene ese auto?
PIPE DIAZ 52k miles
Every video I'm coming across the air box runs a short distance to throttle body mine goes to the rear of my engine
What year is your cx-5?
@@HandsOnDismantler it's a 2013 it appears now after looking at other videos iys at the front of the engine. It goes through the turbo into the cooling system and comes to the front down opposite the radiator
No se descalibra al limpiar ?
If you don’t remove any connections from the throttle body it won’t affect the calibration if you’re careful. 👍🏻
Disconnect the battery first???
No need to as long as you follow what I did in the video. But yes, it’s always a great idea to disconnect the battery before performing any work on a vehicle. Even minor repairs.
@@HandsOnDismantler Gotcha....Thanks.
God Bless in Jesus Christ Name Amen.
Glad it helped!
