    Very opinionated commentary; but I respect that. Excellent video compared to 95% of the others I've seen. I'm an old school 4wheeler dude; and almost all the 4 wheel trucks and jeeps that I rode before were manuals. They give more torque and control when off-road and that's the main thing. No such thing as great gas mileage in a 4x4 or V8 or any truck for that matter. Forgot to mention, 4.30 gears in the manual vs 3.90 gears in the auto. I own a 4x4 TRD Off-Road 2022 Lunar Rock manual and I love it!

    I can’t imagine having a truck with an automatic. A truck is a tool for work and play, an automatic is made for a tool to drive

      yep lets all get the manual and get a truck that's slower, uses more gas, awkward to drive in traffic, and costs more to maintain....

      @@chadhaire1711 Absolutely nothing awkward about a manual transmission in traffic, for a competent and experienced driver. Automatics take all the fun out of driving.

    The manual is better I get better MPG than what it’s rated for. 22-24 MPG on the freeway.

    A 6-speed manual transmission Toyota Tacoma will last you almost forever as long as, you keep up with your oil changes and all of the other things when needed. Common sense. The Tacoma with a time tested 6 speed manual is a well proven vehicle that will always take good care of you. I know. I had one that lasted me 12 years. It is ever so true that the body will rot out long before the engine and drive train ever will, and you can always bet on that one. Loads of fun to drive even on a bad day for sure. Enjoy.

      The automatic lasts just as long as the manual----latter is just too much hassle to drive and has no advantage in reliability, acceleration, or fuel economy. But it is good they offer it for those who want to suffer...

I have nothing at all against the automatic transmission however, my only concern is the younger generation missing out on the pleasure and enjoyment of the standard manual transmission. Us gear jammers enjoy the fun of it. Others could care less and that's ok with me. Have a great day.

      @@stephenfranciszielski6309 Manual tranny works fine on Mazda MX-5 Miata, BMW turbo, and Ford V-8 Mustang GT......but the one in this truck is horrible--a pain to use.

    Manual all day. The only time a manual sucks is in traffic. Get em while you can because it’s only a matter of time before we’re all forced to drive gay electric vehicles 🙄

      Automatic are for people that don't know how to drive. For example two of the same Automatic cars on a drag race get the same result. The only difference is the reaction time on the green light. Do the same with cars in a manual, you will get two different results. It's the driver that shows its true values in the individual that is driving it.

    Manual Tacoma has a better gear ratio than Auto. You can install 33s without having to spend almost $3k in regearing to 5:29 or 4:88s when you install 33s or 35s on an auto.
    You can also avoid the annoying gear searching that some auto tacomas encounter. The gear searching can be resolved with a Tune.
    I'm at sea level, and mostly do hwy driving (limited city) and I average just over 20 mpg.

      Yeah, but who actually needs 33s or 35's offroad? Maybe if I was doing the Rubicon or something. For 99% of people it would be a waste!

      @@barbecuetechtips6024 i agree that most Tacomas will never even see a dirt road, much less the Rubicon trail.
      But lots of folks will mount larger tires just because these rigs look so much better on 33s and 35s. I think they should come stock with 33s and properly geared for them too.

      I have 33s on a stock 13 Tacoma. Much more comfortable on road. You don't feel any imperfections. With the manual tranny, it's the perfect combo

    For all the reasons automatics have the advantage, I bought a TRD off road 4x4 with v6 auto. It was a complete dog and was never in the right gear. It made me feel unsafe when trying to merge or turn left across oncoming traffic. It would stay in the high gear with no power and take forever to downshift. By the time you did drop it was too much forcing you to slam the brakes. I couldn’t get used to it in two years and never once saw 19 mpg on the highway. On paper the auto is better but if you don’t tow and want better real world performance, get the manual. I just need a pickup that is a little fun off road and last a long time. For the cost savings of the manual, you can buy a few clutches and enjoy your purchase more. I go off road for work and never used the multi terrain select, so that is a waste of money also.

    Manual is better overall and the clutch replacements are subjective as is gas mileage depends on the driver. Ok review but I know more about the Tacoma than most so in this instance you missed the Mark on some items like it has a clutch cancel start feature specifically for off road. I’ve drove both and own a manual the automatic hunts for gears and barely downshifts without flooring it. Keep it coming though. Steering comment was spot on Toyota steering racks are not very tight but allows for ease off-road with stock tires.

    The guy who has 220k reviews noted the automatic gear adjustments to shifting has problems to automatics rather than manual transmissions. He was favoring manual rather than automatic. I'm not sure if that is true. What I do know is this. I have owned only 2 vehicles in the past 30 years. 16 with a 1986 long bed 4 cyl. and 14 with my current 2006 tacoma access cab 4 cyl. I love manual and these trucks run a long time. However, my kids are growing up and I need more room for the rear seating. It is getting close to the time to upgrade to another truck, preferably a 6 cyl. manual like yours. But if I cannot get it, I clearly know how to modify a truck from my happy 2006 tacoma.

    Hi Chad, awesome video, very good data! But wanted to mention you can't add mileage and divide by 2 to get "average MPG.". Correct formula is 1 / ((1/A + 1/B) / 2). Basically, you have to convert it to "gallons per mile" (i.e. fuel burn rate per distance) and then average the gallons-per-mile numbers and then convert it back to miles-per-gallon.
    Averaging 14.5 and 19.4 gives 16.95, but that's not the actual MPG.
    Let's say each leg was 20 miles (actual number doesn't really matter). On the way up, you used 20/14.5 gallons, i.e. 1.38 gallons. On the way down, you used (20/19.4 gallons, i.e., 1.03 gallons). So the total trip used 2.41 gallons. 40 miles / 2.41 gallons is actually only 16.6 MPG.
    Not that far off in this case, but my old truck used to get 8 MPG going up a steep freeway, and 70 MPG on the way down. Needless to say it did not average 39 MPG. :D (Correct average for 8MPG and 70MPG is 14.35).

      You are correct but in this case, you are reading into this too much. I have had this conversation before...yes I realize that taking a 10 mpg and 20 mpg, and dividing by 2 will ONLY give a real 15 mpg if both trips are the same mileage, will not if the miles on each trip was different. All I am saying is that by dividing the uphill and downhill and dividing by 2, that is the mileage you should expect on level ground. And I have found that formula is pretty accurate.

    Only truck that even offers a manual. Arguments for or against a standard transmission is akin to arguing over color. Preference. That's all it is.

      @@chadhaire1711 Why not a Rebel then? Or a lightning? Those racetruck enough? Trucks are not for speed or mpg. That's a neat trick modern marketing has played on the midwits. Convinced they can purchase a truck that's as fast as a sports car, handles like a luxury sedan and gets the gas milage of a compact car. They want to purchase this truck for less money than a modern street bike costs as well.

      @@triple6758 When you are driving and climbing this truck from 1,200 feet elevation to 7,000 feet, and maxing out power with a strained engine at 80 mph with your foot on the floor, and getting only 15 mpg, it is time to switch from this manual to an automatic. There are many vehicles that work great with a manual gearbox, this is NOT it. Has NO advantage over the auto gearbox at all. NONE. If you want a manual get the four banger.

    How's the JBL sound system? Worth it over the non TRD Pro models? And overall, is the TRD Pro worth it vs just like Sport (I am in Canada) with upgrading things to it?

      The 6MT TRD Pro does not come with the JBL system, where the auto does. Not sure why, but I can confirm my ‘22 6MT TRD Pro Tacoma does not have it

      @@rj12345rj Hi, so I looked it up and you are right indeed, the manual pro does NOT come with JBL sound system, it just says 7 speakers, but the automatic PRO does come with the JBL sound system. That is weird, and unfortunate!

    That chevy make for great drag cars, when built correctly.
    Had a buddy back in the day with a Vaga wagon that ran 10s in the early 80s and was a street car. 10s ain't fast by today's standards, but it was mighty fast back in the 80s.

    I test drove a 2021 Tacoma trd pro manual and hated it. It had no power, first gear was useless, rear drum brakes, 55k with markup. Not for me, I bought an extended cab raptor 2018 and it’s a dream

    Terrible mileage. Dated truck but will run forever. Get a loaded Ridgeline for less $$ unless heavy off-roading is in order.

      Ridgeline does not offer a 6 speed manual or the same off-road capability. Been looking, but that is a deal breaker.
