I'm viewing Saban's exit from South Florida differently now. Flunking Brees on the physical was disastrous enough, but knowing about Heinrich's situation makes the Dolphins look like cheapskates. The Dolphins changed football history and didn't even know it until a few years later.

This gives me more respect for Saban, always thought he was a mediocre pro coach but its not entirely his fault considering Miami's front office was so inept, not many talented guys on his Miami rosters.
Hell I guess the dolphins still have problems with their front office getting fined for tampering etc.

    • @johnselwitz5362

All things considered, Saban’s first season with Miami in 2005 wasn’t exactly a failure. They were a miserable 4-12 in 2004 but in 2005, they more than doubled their victories and had a winning season with Gus Frerotte at quarterback. Yes they did miss the playoffs at 9-7 but you could tell that he was starting to build something with the Dolphins, they just needed stability at the quarterback position and if they had gotten that, Miami was back. The Drew Brees situation really soured Saban on the NFL, they had to settle for an injury prone Daunte Culpepper and it created a ripple effect. Brees goes to New Orleans and resurrects a downtrodden franchise, winning a Super Bowl and turning the Saints into contenders, Saban goes to Alabama and builds a dynasty, and the Dolphins didn’t find a franchise quarterback until they drafted Tua, and even that is still uncertain, I hope this doesn’t happen but I think if Tua suffers one more serious head injury, his career might be over.

I thought he was just trying to go for having more power than he deserved but now that I know this story, the whole thing as to why he left makes a TON OF SENSE. I am a long time Dol-Fan who at age 12 got to see my favorite team go 17-0 and has seen the team crumble after Joe Robbie the Owner during the Super Bowl years died. Wayne Huizenga was the Owner of the Dolphins at the time of this incident and he made one bad move after another basically firing Don Shula so he can charge extra with luxury boxes with Jimmy Johnson. Johnson was not bad at Miami as he drafted Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas at the team made the playoffs from 1997-2001 but when Johnson retired in early 1999 Huizenga should have let Johnson walk but instead talked a tired retired Johnson out of retirement for one more year by naming his buddy Dave Wannstedt his successor and what a failure that was. I did not like the way Saban left Miami but with the Brees situation and this episode on this fine video I see why Saban left and I don't blame him for leaving. My anger of Saban ended when Huizenga had a chance to hire Mike Tomlin to replace Saban but considered him too hip hoppy and named Cam Cameron instead who may be one of the worst NFL coaches ever so the combo of the Brees -Tomlin situations made me see why Saban left that circus and current Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross has had plenty of problems and blunders but he is competent compared to the Owner Saban left.

Daunte Culpepper also wanted to fight Saban around this time, for what reason who knows? But it is one of the many reasons why I never liked Culpepper, once he reached Detroit he was beyond washed and his attitude clearly terrible.
Aside of that it's incredible how terribly did the Dolphins set Saban up for failure in more ways than one and they ended up rightfully paying for that, by not getting Brees who will be a hall of famer, Saban who's now a legendary coach and they're currently a team who's not come close to any success due to constantly repeating their failures.
