Best Eurorack Bass Lines with the QuBit Surface // A Minimal Modular Setup

  • The QuBit Surface, to me, is one of the best physical modeling drum modules on the market right now. I know there are others that have way more modulation and Control over every little aspect of the sound, but i'm trying to make the music not the drum sounds! -- On top of all that, the size is perfect for my smaller cases and The Surface is quick and easy to use with its small size and 3 main knobs for controlling the sounds. When i tried it out at Namm 2020 i knew it was an instant favorite.

@UCLID right? Good music gear is not cheap. Korg Volca is the most affordable beat making hardware and Roland stuff is affordable at lower tiers. Build slowly and learn deeply.

And it's crazy how buying this stuff on a regular basis gets you accustomed to costs that most outsiders would find ridiculous. I'll find myself saying "Oh, that module is sooo affordable, it's only $250!" and then in another instance saying "Damn, this new book on amazon is like 30 bucks! I wonder if there's a used one for 10 or 15..."

This Makes Me Really Happy! I gotta say, it is kinda starting to bug me every time I see some folks bobbing their heads every time they just start up a 4/4 kick...but there were several times when you hit those golden spots...yeah, I caught myself...btw...there were two times in particular when you hit that spot and I TOTALLY CONCURRED (goose bumps, laughter, and elevation)!! I really enjoy watching "the flow" and yeah, I am totally digging my new Pro3 SE. I am 65 and bought my first Pro One when it first came out. Getting the Pro3 now and watching a younger dude get off on it in a similar fashion is completely inspiring.
    Peace, Ricky.

Wow this comment makes me so happy! That's an awesome story about the Pro 1 and seeing me basically the same on the Pro 3 haha.
Back then though there weren't nearly as many options as there are today, so that must have been super special.

@@RickyTinez You might be interested, others as well. I got my Pro3 regular edition about three weeks ago, and although I wanted the SE, I couldn't justify the difference in price for what I thought was just the unnecessary option of panel tilt. Happily opening my Pro3, I was in wonderland, as you all know...but had to go to bed. Next day, got up and of course, I didn't even have to learn how to use it as I had already watched EVERY video on it. So turned it on, and BAM...it just DIED! Oh man I was depressed...so got hold of the merchant I purchase from (hint, last letter in alphabet), and they told me just send it back. Well, for the first thing, I realized that I probably was going to spend most of the rest of my life turning these knobs, I needed the SE. There weren't any replacements yet due to the Corona. So...luckily, someone returned an SE and I got it for about 350 less. Karma? But I have had it for a week now, and I do believe it is a totally unique instrument, and just wonderful. Just found out you can put different waves in osc #3. btw...I opted NOT to sell the Subsequent37, but am happily integrating BOTH. Peace.

so basically if you want to release a professional audio product today, you need to rip the name off from a product in the same category made by xoxos. i am so totally glad to see that they didn't seem to actually apply any of the benefits of physical modeling synthesis present in even the rudimentary form provided in the original surface, great job rich swedish people.

Hi Ricky! Rings is such an emblematic module by now that it's hard to get it to sound original. But the secret to unlocking the craziness in it are the STRUM, V/OCT and IN inputs. If you send there crazy audio modulation or bursts of triggers, then things can get out of hand easily. You have to "misuse" it to get interesting results!

I like Rings, but I have to admit, I have a bit of a hard time with it too. Surface is tempting - it looks a bit more interactive thanks to choke, has more voices, is easier to tune (if you don't mind the 12-tone limitation) and is smaller to boot. And I actually think Plaits' mini-Rings modes sound better than Rings itself (when using the internal audio sources). But Plaits doesn't have enough voices (a severe limitatiion IMHO), and with Rings, I'll miss the audio input, CV attenuverters, and alternate modes/easter egg to some degree. And I'll still want to hold on to Rings to do gamelan-inspired microtonal stuff.
That said, I agree witih the poster that said Surface isn't really equivalent to Rings. The ability to use Rings as a standalone oscillator/voice is a bonus, not its core function. It really is more like Plaits, with less variety but more voices.

So you're telling me i need to try Plaits.. haha Thanks for all the info and input!

@@RickyTinez Absolutely if you haven't by now. I got it a few months after building my rig and it completely re-routed how I patch up everything. I loved sending it a sequence from Scales (Which is also fantastic. Glad you've also found it amazing) into the model on the percussive setting (for Plaits) to do drum sequences. It's monophonic in that sense so only 1 drum per step but it's such a nice way to fill out a loop.
Now, tho, I have a set of 2hp drum modules so it freed up Plaits for all the other models. It does everything from leads to taking duplicating pitches from a lead for a layered, trailing effect (Like a strum behind the lead synth or so) to nice filler plunks and percussive bits.
Absolutely will never leave home without it

Good video, but I think a better comparison to make would be between this ($299 USD) and Plaits ($259) since they both share snare, kick, and physical modeling algorithms. You have to keep in mind that Rings is more than just a physical modeling synth, it's a resonator. You get out what you put into it in the purest sense. If all you do is patch triggers, gates, and some modulation sure it will be uninspiring. The QB Surface plays pre-programmed sounds, while Rings responds to sounds at the input in one of a few pre-programmed ways... It's a subtle but important distinction to make.

Worth it just for the choke. I too have sold Rings twice, but third time was the charm. I now love Rings. I use as an effect a lot, and while I do use the modeling voices, I always have to mess them up a bit or couple them with an analog voice. There's a certain coldness to physical modeling that makes me depressed. I know it's weird, but it's true. Thanks for the video. I think I may dig into this company a little bit. I'll get one of these after Nebulae 2.... and maybe Bloom

I want an intellijell rack system or an arturia rackbrute system. can you describe the pros and cons of each, or is it negligible?

i reeaalllyyy like the palette case because it has so much built-in especially the boring things like power and multipliers.
I've never had the Rackbrute so i wouldn't feel comfy speaking on it :/

I have the rackbrute 6U. its really good. heaps of space and solid power supply. but... kinda wish i could get those 1U modules like Ricky has in his case.

The RackBrute 6U has great value. You can hardly run out of juice and you can couple it with a second RackBrute 6U in a foldable form.

So is Surface more versatile than Rings, or is it that it is more percussive, or both? I'm trying to make more ambient melodic evolving stuff than growy stuff, and wonder if Rings still is better for that? Also something from this that gives me the impression that Surface is more suitable for a darker gloomy feel, witch I also like...

Can you run individual outs from the modular gear to a DAW for mixing and processing, or is it a stereo out for all of it?

Usually I like QU-Bit stuff but the sounds don't convince me. I would rather buy a second plonk.

Nice, I really like it but in a way I prefer Plonk for bass , deeper modifications possible, plus noize etc. Quantized too.
