I forgot to mention: The Ensemble Oscillator can work in microtonal and unquantized spread modes at well! Not scales. It also has a bunch of octave modes and 5ths and the like. Check out the manual for a full list. Thanks for watching!
Speaking of which, it’s out of tune for lots of the video. It looks as though the detune knob is in the middle. Is this likely a common thing for this unit?
because of this channel, I've started looking at my paychecks in terms of how many modules they're worth. I made 3 OCHDs, one Elements, and 4 Moskwas last month, for example
This is really the most convincing module for going modular for me (that and the Subharmonicon, which seems to be in the same vein). Very different than what you can get with desktop synths! Loved the demos!
Oh man! Great demo of this beast. I think I will re-think my rackspace. Again. I hadn’t considered the EnsOSC so far but the options are just amazing. The good old sinewave! Cheerio 🎉
This my second reply. After the first viewing I was lucky enough to pick one up. After floundering a little I starting coming up with some cool stuff. That said I’ve learned so much more with the second viewing. I can’t say how awesome this video is. I’m so appreciative.
I've looked at modular stuff before, have always sort of avoided it because of the cost and complexity. But I blame you and the 4ms Ensemble for making me finally decide to go for it. Very cool stuff. Thanks for an inspiring demo!
Thanks. Just got this today. Really clear and helpful. Its more complex than i had realized so this helps quite a bit. Lots of great ideas to play with.
Im borrowing one for a few months. It's a very special module, has a unique sound out of the box, but with not a lot of experimentation, you can get very far from home. It's like having your own, live-in, Joujouka troupe.
You're making me miss this module! I had one but sold it thinking I wanted to make room for more analog gear and felt like I could get in similar territory with Tides Parasites and Stages Ourobouros. But it's not quite the same! I love the Stages Harmonic oscillator, but Stages is so clutch for generating envelopes, S&H, and slew that I don't use the oscillator mode very often. Lately I've been wishing I still had the Ensemble, especially since I just got a QPAS and feel like the two modules would sound heavenly and cinematic together.
I just acquired the Ensemble , and luckily I have the other relevant modules as well, If I can get close to the beauty here, I will be very happy...will be studying this closely..Thanks Red
I like the noise that pops in at 14:35, that was a nice surprise :D I ordered one of these and it came a few weeks ago and I've been using it more and more and more. At first I didn't get what the scale function did, and I was thinking of it like minor/major type scale only, but this video helped me understand it possibilities. Thank you mane!
That last patch is so completely excellent. This oscillator is way more than was initially marketed at release. My case is full but I might have to make room for the Ensemble...
I am currently in the process of assembling my first Eurorack system. Because I wanted a versatile VCO the 4ms Ensemble is my chosen audio source. Your video is a useful introduction to its capabilities.
9:35 reminded of Hall of Mirrors by Kraftwerk for some reason. But yeah that thing sounds pretty damn cool. Even just sweeping through the settings almost made me cry at the sheer beauty of the sounds I was hearing
I've had this for a few days, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how I would use it with other melodic modules. This is because, though it plays chords, it's not diatonic, so it changes key each time the pitch is changed. If it's set to a major scale, it plays a triad in C. This sounds great as long as you don't change the pitch and you're just modulating parameters or sequencing it by itself. But when a sequencer changes the pitch, say to D, it plays a D major, E: E major, and so on. It keeps switching keys instead of going to minor for the 2 and the 3, etc. The only way to avoid changing to unexpected keys all the time is to have it on 5ths or octaves, which I can do with my Neutron. I'm not sure if I'm just not thinking about it right, or missing a setting, or what. Not comparing it to the Neutron, but rather, it seems like the scale and spread become unusable unless a) nothing else is playing along, or b) it's set to 5ths or octaves.
What I do is use a sequencer with a velocity channel, like the Keystep Pro, and patch velocity to the Scale CV input. Then you can select a chord for each note of the sequence, since it's usually just major and minor, what I do is attenuate+offset the velocity so that >50% is minor and
Thx, nice vid, nice demo and nice music! This module reminds me a bit of the 4ms SMR but being a little more musical in functionality - and adding some saw waves, which is good to have.
4MS might have me on this one, provided it’s no more difficult to get my brain wrapped around than my Spectral Multiband Resonator. I can definitely hear a little of that resonating harmonic tonal substance that I’m familiar with in the SMR. Always nice and very beautiful sounding. The SMR is just a little bit complicated if you’re not at the top of your game with your trigger logic. THANKS for sharing!!
How did I miss this? Dazzled by their SWN I guess, but this seems to be far more practical- smaller, more versatile, nicer sounding (imho), half the size and half the price. Right to the top of my wishlist- thanks Jeremy!
Sounds great. Really nicely laid out module as well. Looks as good as it sounds. Plenty of controls, plenty of inputs, no menus. Exactly what a Eurorack module should be for me 👍 WANT! 😭
This thing sounds fuckin excellent. Just bought one in black. Guess that Erica Synths Sample Drum will have to wait! Damn you Red for making this video ;-)
14:50 that'll do me :) This and your other video are far away my favourite demos of this thing and reason I'll get one. The other vids I've seen don't really show what this thing is all about, IMO.
Should be noted that the detune knob is halfway up during the intro - hence that Wendy Carlos slightly 'Beauty & the Beast" atonality in the sound. Still, a rousing vid that will probably drive a bunch of sales
"Chariots of fire made" me laugh.. childhood memories : ) Vangelis was my yellow brick road into synth music. Been thinking about my next sound source and for a while and I've considered the 4ms spherical wavetable navigator, MI Rings, FM like ALM Akemie's castle or another sampler like ALM Squid Salmpler. Or should I literally think outside the box and get a Electron digitone?? But then I got ST E352 Clouds Terrarium: (Wavetable and 2 operator FM++), so maybe I don't need another wavetable and the Akemie is a bit to "raw"? I also got MI Elements so Rings is tempting but I got MI Elements so.. I also got a 4ms STS so I probably don't need another sampler either / : Anyway: Ensemble Oscillator is a serious competitor now to the above mentioned and several other modules and units I thought about. Hopefully it will have easily updatable firmware, like for new scales, intervals or whatever that they might think of. But I would like to hear something more of the dark sides of this module though, like the "Blade Runneresque" sounds at 4:50 can it do base, darke drones and deep pads? Can it be bad and do hell sounds? Is it any good for halloween? To whomever it may concern: If you made it this far you deserve a treat, here you go "Oh my" ua-cam.com/video/CxQKltWI0NA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=melodysheep
I love my SWN so much I traded my original EnOsc for a second one but now a few months later after hearing some of the recordings I made with it… I just got another EnOsc I still think the SWN is probably the most exciting module in Euro…but they are both remarkable … feel similarly about the SMR, DLD and the many 4ms Clocks
Been looking at this or Qubit chord v2 and a bit torn on which one! I love the idea of the wavetable/separate oscillator control in the qubit but the ensemble has loads of tasty modulation options.
Somewhere around 18:00 give or take ... I could get lost in that patch, I’d need a trail of bread crumbs to find my way back home. Lots of possibilities here.
I have begun to sprinkle a couple of A-130-2's around after seeing this. I'm interested in your thoughts on VCA placement in the audio signal chain. I started with just an Intellijel VCA, which was nowhere near enough. But I'm also realizing that, for example, if you place the VCA after the VCO, you can have issues with say, the filter continuing to oscillate with the VCA closed. And for the record my first A-130 went next to the Ensemble. At first I think I assumed the VCA always goes last before the mixer. So now I have gone back and forth. And yeah, I realize it's a complex topic.
@19:35 You mention the Rene's Gate and Pitch going to the Root and Pitch of the ensemble osc. Can you explain a bit more why you would want a gate signal going to Pitch or Root?
I think he explains it about a minute later, but my guess is that a gate attenuated to a nice interval is nice. He mentions it helps with the bass swell. I did something similar the other night into Chord v2 - I sent it a sequence from Bloom, and then would put in an attenuated and offset gate from Pam's every so often. Even though Bloom cranks out a bunch of fractal sequences it can get into patterns and sending that extra voltage to the root note really helped open things up even more.
Would sound ace through Quadrax and a trigger sequencer with lots of outputs/inputs and filtered for weird stuff. I like how you basically just add on to a Make Noise Black and Gold Shared System.
sold. i'm buying this thing. i bet my ass as soon as i have it in my rack tho, i'm gonna struggel the fuck out of it. man Jeremy you make it look so fucking easy dude!! gnarly demo!!!!
Love love love this vid! You are solely responsible for us buying this module! Quick question - when using the cross mod for the percussive element do you change the width of the gate in Pam's?
I forgot to mention: The Ensemble Oscillator can work in microtonal and unquantized spread modes at well! Not scales. It also has a bunch of octave modes and 5ths and the like. Check out the manual for a full list. Thanks for watching!
What’s that low profile case you’re using? I need another case. I have the same arturia case!
@@EVILJAMARR Maybe the Make Noise Skiff?
Fletch Solow you’re my hero!
Speaking of which, it’s out of tune for lots of the video. It looks as though the detune knob is in the middle. Is this likely a common thing for this unit?
How can I work in unquantized setting on EnOsc so to send quantized pitch from a sequencer???
because of this channel, I've started looking at my paychecks in terms of how many modules they're worth. I made 3 OCHDs, one Elements, and 4 Moskwas last month, for example
and proceed to record 0 tracks.
This is really the most convincing module for going modular for me (that and the Subharmonicon, which seems to be in the same vein). Very different than what you can get with desktop synths! Loved the demos!
Pretty much this.
the infinite options in modular blow away traditional synths.
Mine was Clouds and Ornament and Crime with hemispheres. That's when I got really hooked.
I don't know how I missed this module, but thanks to this video, it's now on my wishlist!
I bought this oscillator awhile back after seeing this overview and it's consistently my most used.. Incredible range and so easy to use
Absolutely agree
Absolutely great jams and patches! Excellent video demo and definitely want to jam with one of these
Oh man! Great demo of this beast. I think I will re-think my rackspace. Again. I hadn’t considered the EnsOSC so far but the options are just amazing. The good old sinewave! Cheerio 🎉
This thing and reverb/delay - just twiddle knobs with a few lfos and you have an ambient album
Absolutely
Ok.
This my second reply. After the first viewing I was lucky enough to pick one up. After floundering a little I starting coming up with some cool stuff. That said I’ve learned so much more with the second viewing. I can’t say how awesome this video is. I’m so appreciative.

How much have you dropped now haha its been 2 years
Very cool. Enjoyed this quite a bit
Thanks. Just got this today. Really clear and helpful. Its more complex than i had realized so this helps quite a bit. Lots of great ideas to play with.
11:50 Okay that's the coolest sound ever when the Hi-hat comes in. You just made amazing live retro gaming music
This video just costed me 330€...
same here my man!
It saved me money as I already have this module and after seeing this again, I should start over with learning it instead of buying new stuff.
Love is limitless, so you can love this module and still love other modules, things and even other people.
@jonny peterson you really had to bring religion into it
@jonny peterson Jesus was probably a great guy. I can accept that.
@jonny peterson Sure.
Im borrowing one for a few months. It's a very special module, has a unique sound out of the box, but with not a lot of experimentation, you can get very far from home. It's like having your own, live-in, Joujouka troupe.
You're a constant source of inspiration! Great video!! Will definitely put this module on my wish list.
This video helped answer some of the mysteries of this lil' enigma here, for me. Thanks!
You're making me miss this module! I had one but sold it thinking I wanted to make room for more analog gear and felt like I could get in similar territory with Tides Parasites and Stages Ourobouros. Hey Jeremy, this is another great video on a great module. Really making me want to dip my toe into Modular.
bought the 4ms because of you :-)
I just acquired the Ensemble , and luckily I have the other relevant

the last patch is so beautiful

that uptempo patch at the end is so cool.
Excellent video. Thank you 😊
*watches video, re-evaluates all plans*
Wow, I just love the sounds this thing can make.
That sounds amazing!
This sounds like what I always wanted my Korg Wavestation to do
17:30ish and my brain is like ‘mmm this sounds like a cute ambient wedding’
killer grooves & great insights into patching the beauty! thank you jeremey
I am currently in the process of assembling my first Eurorack system. Because I wanted a versatile VCO the 4ms Ensemble is my chosen audio source. Your video is a useful introduction to its capabilities.
This thing sounds gorgeous
The first demo sounds like a very good completed piece that I would buy.
oh fuuuggggghhh this is so nice I love what you're doing with it!
Very cool mind melting capabilities.
9:35 reminded of Hall of Mirrors by Kraftwerk for some reason. But yeah that thing sounds pretty damn cool. Even just sweeping through the settings almost made me cry at the sheer beauty of the sounds I was hearing
This + MI Marbles would be great combo i think.
Can confirm. Just got this yesterday and paired it with marbles. Many hours passed me by
I've been having a great time with that combo. I've upload a short jam ua-cam.com/video/6VmUEWF5ItU/v-deo.html if you're interested
I'm 3 minutes in and already considering getting a pod for this thing just to drive it with my Mono Station, good lord this thing sounds amazing...
Don't forget a couple vcas!
"Now we have a really weird Chariots of Fire" ....LOL, cracked me up.
Always great sounds .
Damn it Jeremy, I can't afford to keep watching these things!

Thx, nice vid, nice demo and nice music! This module reminds me a bit of the 4ms SMR but being a little more musical in functionality - and adding some saw waves, which is good to have.
Please make a video on the Qu-Bit Bloom. I have it. I love it. I think you will love it, too. Especially paired with your new ensemble oscillator.
What a great demo!
Thank you very much. I like it!!
That uptempo joint really got me
The tracks are 🔥
Actually this is a form of an analog computer and they are quite amazing!
4MS might have me on this one, provided it’s no more difficult to get my brain wrapped around than my Spectral Multiband Resonator. It is amazing, it can sound even as a Prophet 5!!!
Was considering a moog subh until I heard you create the patch with 2 pitches. Like you said, this unique module is why Eurorack is great.
14:25 When you laugh at surprised appreciation that's how we all feel jamming to this impromptu masterpiece
"The machine did something cool, and I helped!"
fabulous! thanks! all roads....
It’s a great module but wow you really make the thing sing, kudos! Great video.
Oooofff it’s awesomeness all wrapped up in a little package 📦
Man, the pipe organ sounds at 17:00 are super gorgeous!
It’s quite a hard machine to tame , this is a great demo to help with that.
How did I miss this? Dazzled by their SWN I guess, but this seems to be far more practical- smaller, more versatile, nicer sounding (imho), half the size and half the price. Right to the top of my wishlist- thanks Jeremy!

This thing seems amazing.
That ambient patch starting at 18:20 is just magical!
It sounds like if Suicide didn’t use heroin and started the band in the eurorack era
Oh lawwwwwd that's beautiful! :O
Totally love it too
You had me at Spread Knob
This thing sounds fuckin excellent. Just bought one in black. Guess that Erica Synths Sample Drum will have to wait! Damn you Red for making this video ;-)
Epic video. Gotta get me one of those...
14:50 that'll do me :)
This and your other video are far away my favourite demos of this thing and reason I'll get one. The other vids I've seen don't really show what this thing is all about, IMO.
Holy hell that bass line at 15min in is TASTYYYY. Is that sequence from the Rene? That needs to be a full track. Entertaining walkthrough and jam!
God I want to modulate that spread and pass it through a phat spring reverb module.
My god the drones you could get up to with that!
Should be noted that the detune knob is halfway up during the intro - hence that Wendy Carlos slightly 'Beauty & the Beast" atonality in the sound. Still, a rousing vid that will probably drive a bunch of sales
I always forget about that damn little pot

Instant love affair! MAN, that thing sounds good... great demo Jeremy!
that intro is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Hi. Is it possible to make chord progressions following a tonality with this module?
Would sound ace through Quadrax and a trigger sequencer with lots of outputs/inputs and filtered for weird stuff. I like how you basically just add on to a Make Noise Black and Gold Shared System.
Melody at the start had a little pirate vibe to it 😎👍
15:14 superb, for me you could have just left that playing and thrown some complex pads over the top with something like a polybrute ;)
Well, you sold me one.
sold. i'm buying this thing. i bet my ass as soon as i have it in my rack tho, i'm gonna struggel the fuck out of it. man Jeremy you make it look so fucking easy dude!! gnarly demo!!!!

so on the fence between this qu-bit chords and oxi coral......
