When you think you've started your period because of sweat or discharge alone, it's called Spökmens is Swedish. The direct translation is ghost period. It basically means that the soul of your period is trying to freak you out by haunting your knickers.

My mum cried at the Always #endperiodpoverty ad on tv the other day. Her mum died when she was very young so she had no one around to look out for her for that stuff. She had to steal money from the change of the weekly shop to buy pads etc, and if she couldn’t do that then had to make do with toilet paper. Safe to say that I had period products coming out of my ears years before I even started my period because she was determined I would never experience what she did. This is a fantastic cause - thank you for supporting it, and for discussing these taboo subjects so openly and honestly!

I have the most understanding boyfriend ever - if there's ever been blood during sex (sometimes when we least expect it!)he just gets all 'are you ok, do you need anything, do you want me to run you a bath so you can clean up, don't worry I'll change the sheets' - and I just feel so loved.

my boyfriends a bit like that. We've yet to do anything whilst I've been on my period as most of the uncoincidentally most the time when I've seen him I've not been on. Though when we got together he was very upfront and said let me know when your on so I can accommodate for that.

Apparently some of the 'cells' really not sure what words to use here - that causes the uterus to contract to release the egg can drift around and some often attach to your bowel which causes it to contract more than normal too. It's perfectly normal.

      white_blood clipped_wings hormones?

    • @clarencetheunicorn4806
      @clarencetheunicorn4806 6 років тому +9

unterstrich yeah it’s hormones! They send signals but they are not specific signals to a specific area, they send more of a general signal to a general area. So when the hormones tell the uterus to contract they sort of tell the bowels to contract too, so can make your bowels really loose because it’s being expelled early.

I got my period when I was 10 years old - and the day before Year 5 school camp. I went to my Mum crying and panicking because I had no idea what was happening and thought I was thought I was dying. I remember Mum kind of laughing at me, and I was sent to camp anyway. The girls in my cabin stole all my pads and hid them while I was in the shower so I was left crying in the bathroom block and had to use toilet paper for the rest of the camp (was too scared and embarrassed to tell the teachers I needed help).
At 36, I still get a tight feeling in my throat when I think back on this memory.
This is why videos like this are so important.

Just a piece of advice for anyone suffering from really extreme period pains where paracetamol and ibuprofen don't help - this is NOT normal and you do NOT have to just bear it. For years I thought that it was normal to be in pain even when on painkillers, until I actually started throwing up from how intense the pain was. Then I went to see a doctor and they gave me a prescription painkillers, and that really helped. Now I'm on the pill and my period pains are almost gone, I can manage with about two ibuprofens on a heavy flow day, and other PMS symptoms are lessened as well.
So there are options out there to make periods bearable and mostly pain-free, and your doctor should be there to help you figure out what works for you!

I went to a very small highschool and have some fun period stories to share.
Firstly, teasing the male teachers about periods. Someone would ask to go to the bathroom and the teacher would pause and from across the room someone would yell "WHAT IF SHES ON HER PERIOD JUST LET HER GO."
This school also thought an all girls weight lifting gym class was a good idea. All of our cycles synced up and for that entire week we would just refuse to do anything lol.
And finally I was using the bathroom once and a girl came in and suddenly i hear her say "I think my entire uterus just fell out into the toilet."
    Good times...

My first period was actually a weirdly beautiful moment. We were changing for Phys Ed, and I freaked out, and all the girls came together around me to help me. Someone gave me some pads, someone went and told the teacher I wouldn't be coming out for class, I got lots of hugs and tissues and comfort, someone even bought me a chocolate bar.
The best thing was that this was ALL the girls in the class; even the ones who normally made fun of me or had picked on me in the past, and girls I didn't get along with generally, came together to help me. It was a beautiful moment.

Period tip for heavy flow-days: wear a second pair of panties! I like the sense of security since it keeps the pad closer to the body instead of feeling like it flops around :)

Not an embarrassing story, but sort of a small period victory:
I got my period quite young and wayyyyy before most girls in my school. One day my frenemy at the time kept blowing me off and when I finally confronted her she told me she had gotten her period and that I couldn’t understand her “woman problems” but I was like, “bish, I been doing this a year and a half!” She was so taken aback. This friend was constantly belittling me, so this felt like a win for me at the time.

fun getting-your-period-in-hospital story: after i had surgery i got my period while recovering in hospital, and i asked the nurse for a pad. she said that they didn't have any on the ward, so instead she gave me a *massive* incontinence nappy. like an actual diaper.
no shade on people who need those, because there are all kinds of reasons for being either temporarily or permanently incontinent, but it felt like pretty massive overkill for a light period 🤣
loved the video hannah, and i'm looking for ways to support projects like end period poverty here in australia too.

OH HANNAH WE HAVE THE EXACT SAME FIRST PERIOD STORY! I can't remember what movie I went to see, but t remember being in the toilet for like 20 minutes after the movie had finished just wiping away so much blood. My mum's bf at the time, a dreadful man, eventually had to ask someone to come in and ask if I was okay. I had the education to know what was happening as well, but I was still panicking a bit, lol.

Also, I’d assume if you are severely ill and hospitalized you probably wouldn’t experience heavy periods because your body would be in survival mode and conserving blood, etc. good question to ask a doctor about how being very ill would affect your period!

If you ever need some stories about overflow or hypermenorrhea just let me know, I could write a book about my embarrassing period accidents! I have a genetic bleeding disorder and got my first period when I was 10, I was not ready :s The fact that period is usually something people don’t talk about meant that I just assumed everyone was going to the same situation as me, and it took years to realise I actually had a problem and that the average girl’s period is not as heavy as mine. Women should definitely talk more about this and I am so glad that lately society is getting a little bit more open about such topics

I gladly grew up in a “period positive” environment and I already knew about them before I got my own since we talked about it in school and at home.
Now I have a boyfriend who cares for me so much and when I’m in pain he offers me pain killers, massages me, cuddles me, orders pizza. And one time we were in a hotel and I was suddenly bleeding and I thought that he would be freaked out - but he wasn’t.
AAALSO: this is gonna be my second period with the menstrual cup - so glad that I purchased it. Best thing ever!!

Keeping a spare tampon or pad in every bag is such a good idea. I’ve had periods for over 10 years now and I STILL often find myself in the situation where I’ve started my period when I’m out or at work and am not equipped and it’s so annoying!! Every time I’m just sitting on the toilet rummaging through my bag knowing DAMN WELL I haven’t got a pad or tampon in there and I just think ‘ffs Mary...’

First period story. I was sat on a table for my lunch and I’d had stomache pain all day and felt so sick. I was 13 and wearing my favourite white boxer shorts. Turns out I came on 3 hours before when the cramps started and I was covered. Down my legs and everything it was a miracle I didn’t bleed though my school trousers. Lucky I had a friend with pads on them.
Also if there’s another video please talk about medication on periods like I used to go on holiday for 5-6 weeks when I was younger. And I can’t remember the name of the tablet I was on but it was not contraception it just stopped your period for as long as you took it and it was all fine and well but if I was due on like a week or two before the end of the holiday but if I was taking this ‘pill’ for the whole 5 weeks of my holiday my god the period after coming off was horrific. I remember bleeding through a night pad and tampon every half an hour for 3 or 4 days.

In one of my classes as a high school student, I got something out of my bag and a pad fell on the floor. I didn't notice until a girl laughed and said, "who uses pads anymore?" Super embarrassing at the time, to the point where I pretended it wasn't mine due to anxiety. But now I find the lack of solidarity extremely sad. Girls making other girls feel shameful about a common experience is not the way to go.
Another time, my tampon overflowed in the span of one class period, and bled through my jeans. I desperately asked other people if they had anything spare during break, and ended up tying a shirt around my waist. I was late to class and my teacher made a public display of it to yell at me about being respectful of her time. I think if we talk more about periods, these stories won't feel so isolating for young people in the moment, so thanks for making this video! So many people are still uncomfortable talking about them.

I was at Putney swimming baths and I bled a mix of water and blood onto the middle diving board when there were tons of 9 yr old boys with seizing cramps and I ran down the ladder And did a run walk and jumped into the pool this was on my second period ever and the first time I ever wore a tampon! Oh two of my faves together ❤️
I was 9 and two months when I started my period. It was horrible, my primary school obviously had nothing to help with this, so I had to use the teachers toilet - which you can imagine was mortifying as you can imagine. And back then they had incinerators instead of special hubs to chuck your pads in. It was so scary back then. I can’t believe I had to deal with that now.
I also missed a bunch of periods, and Doctor’s diagnosed me with PCOS and my hormone levels were crazy. If you have missed 3, definitely go to your doctors. It’s usually something so simple to fix.
My ex refused to have period sex. He was mortified by it, which was sad because that’s the time I sometimes want it the most lol.

My first period... I was 11 and at school, Monday morning my first lesson was PE. We were playing rounders and I was the person that stood at 4th post and as I was standing there not moving around much I was like 'ooh, I think I might be catching a stomach bug' because I got a really bad surge of pain in my stomach, it lasted quite a while and then seemed to go off towards the end of the lesson. I didn't get any more pains for the rest of the day and I also have a bladder made of steel so there were no visits made to the loo, so I still didn't know I'd started untill I asked to go to the toilet during the last lesson if the day (English) and there it was a puddle of blood (sorry if this is tmi but) it was all up the inside of my legs as well so obviously I'd been bleeding all day but I just didn't know. I also had had very brief education on this at Primary School so knew that it was nothing abnormal but I had no clue you could use toilet roll as make shift pad (and I also have no common sence to be able to work that out for myself) so I cleaned myself up as best I could, and headed back into class a changed woman... that makes it sound like I was proud I really wasn't I was so embarrassed, I didn't ask anyone if they had a spare pad or tampon I could borrow either because I was so embarrassed, I was sure that as soon as I entered that room again everyone would just know that I'd started my period so I didn't say a word. I then got the bus home with my brother's and again didn't say anything to them about it because I was too embarrassed to. When I got home I took my mum into the bathroom with me and told her, I remember being like 'it's REALLY messy down there mum' and she just laughed... I definitely didn't find it funny so she composed herself and then got me a pad. It could have been worse I spose

For me, spotting is like a really light period I get for one day right in the middle of my cycle where I only need a pantyliner to absorb it. For me, it doesn't happen every month, but as far as I can remember, it usually happens on the day that I ovulate. (For reference, my average cycle length is 29 days, bleeding for an average of 6 days)

I got my period at home when i was 9 (i hadn't had the talk yet). Earlier in the day i'd slid down my banister so when i saw blood in my pants i thought i'd damaged myself in some way lol. I was really freaked out so I shouted for my mum and she then explained what was actually going on. If i have kids i'll definitely be teaching them about periods when they're young!

My period stopped for four years from the ages 16 to 20 due to my chronic kidney disease since I was on a buttload of meds including some hormones and the day I got my period again felt so weird and like I was healthier and now I've had them regularly for three years again. I guess my message is that uteri are though as hell and might take a break to let the rest of your body heal.

its a bit more expensive but works amazingly for serious period pain but naprogesic. its actually meant specifically for period pain and cramps and as someone who was in bed for almost a week a month in pain it was a great help. my first period was when i was about 6 or 7 and i had no idea what was going on and literally though i was dying. i get that 6 or 7 is very very early for a first period but we need to start educating kids from that early an age. I'm using the implant now, the one in my arm, and i don't get a period at all now which is great but i still love talking about periods

Going to the toilet does relieve cramp symptoms! Leah, my God your overflow story… Thank god I have such light periods that that has never happened to me. When it first happened did you get stressed?
Congratulations on your previous campaign raising so much awareness! Those sanitary towels and tampons will make such a difference for young women!
Weirdly enough I’ve been thinking of doing my own vlog on period poverty. This video has definitely inspired me to go forth with it.

I leave Tampons in literally every bag that I use and everytime I am heavily looking for ANYTHING in my bag several tampons fall out. And by now, I could not even be bothered. I think it's hilarious when I am searching for change while getting French fries and some tampons fall out. 😂

I'm an intern at a big epigenetic research company(nonprofit), and they offer free feminine products in every bathroom so that everyone who needs them has them. As a finance person, I figured out that the head of the company was paying for this personally since government wouldn't let us write it off as a necessity. Also, I have the Skyla IUD and I must say that I love it and have had nothing but a wonderful experience. My periods are only about 2 days total now, whereas before I was bedridden with serious pain and vomiting or other stomach problems for a full 7 days.

Haven't had a period since January as I got the contraceptive implant in October, which is such a blessing. I haven't had any major catastrophes in a while when I was getting my period but it's so great to not have to worry about having pads on me all the time or if I need to empty my menstrual cup during a long shift.

Really liked this video. 💛Regarding the pain relief question. There's quite a lot of own brand types of migraine/headache tablets which have exactly the same ingredients as the on brand period pain relief tablets and are like a third of the price. Obviously make sure yourself of the ingredients being the same but there's always that option 💛

I’m the expert at having multiple medications that don’t conflict with each other for period pain.
    First is 2 ibuprofen
    Then is 2 Ponstan
    Then 1or 2 Buscopan
And if all else fails, 1 Prodiene
    (I rarely have paracetamol)

Removing my copper coil was the best decision ever, I went from having terrible cramps and a lot of bleeding to no cramps (even better than before the coil) and very light bleeding. Obviously it’s different for everyone but for me it was such a relief!

Re the painkillers question: I get extremely bad cramps (suspected endo) and ibuprofen and paracetamol (even the supposedly targeted ones) just do not work, so if you're in a similar position can recommend Naprogesic (active ingredient naproxen) - it only works if taken exactly as directed though, esp. the bit about starting at first pain or first sign of blood - starting it early is key

11:46 😅 oh this is bringing up memories
I remember thinking... did I just wet myself a teeny bit? Nah, it must just be a spot of discharge, I'm about to have a shower before school anyway so I can wait 10 minutes. Then I went to the toilet and it was brownish not clear. And I was so surprised but knew exactly what had happened, as I was 15 and a half by this point. Then I remembered I'd had stomach pains the night before and that was like a warning. So I hastily grabbed a pad from the collection my mum had prepared me with a couple years prior, and went straight to school almost late, my dad gave me a lift.
    11 days my first period.

I once was at the cinema, off my period, and then half way through I noticed I was bleeding, I was wearing bright blue jeans at the time and had to take the train home. it was too dark in the cinema to see if I had bled through but once the movie had finished I saw that I had blood alllllll down my leg and around my butt because I bled badly through the whole movie without noticing. I refused to look down at myself the whole way home bc of embarrassment and neither me or my sister mentioned the fact I had blood stained trousers. needless to say I chucked them when I got home *my most embarrassing/traumatising period story

spotting is any bleeding that occurs outside your normal cycle! a lot of people use the term spotting to refer to the end of your period (the dregs, as hannah so eloquently put it) when the blood/discharge is darker.

I have a copper coil and while my periods are more painful, and random, I really love that I don’t have to think about taking a pill every day. I also had really irregular periods on the progesterone only pill (and I can’t take the combo pill) so it may just be a me thing! Here’s hoping they become more regular as my body gets used to it.

The timing of this video is great honestly. I'm on my period now, and I /just/ got a new memory foam mattress this week with a cute light pink sheets that me and my husband love. Guess what I did though? second day on my monthly I bled all over the new sheets, my new mattress, and the pillow I keep between my legs for my back! thankfully I have amazing men in my life who helped me get the blood stains out and all is good, and they were really kind and supportive about it. When I went to bed the next night, I made sure there was a towel in my spot!

I think my most embarrassing period story is from the time I was in hospital just after surgery. I had had an operation (day surgery) and a couple of days afterwards I noticed I was getting blood clots burst through the surgery site. I went into hospital as I needed to go into theatre and be opened back up and to have the site cleaned and sorted (long story). They gave me blood thinning tablets. Yes, I then came on my period. I stood up to go for a wee and it was like a waterfall of blood fell to the hospital floor - in front of a really handsome doctor!!! I wanted the world to swallow me up.

Lia it depends on how long you have had it. I've had mine for three years now and it took around six months to get used to as your body treats it like an invasion and tries to force it out. It is up to you but if you are patient I found it is worth the wait

Mine have been so heavy in the past that I've needed to back up my cup with a pad - and bear in mind my cup holds the equivalent of 4 reg tampons... I was overflowing in a single hour (and yes, I went to gynae, they were super useless). Mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid are both available on prescription from your GP - MA is mostly for pain relief (for bad cramping) and TA is mostly for flow reduction, but they both do a bit of the other too. Raspberry leaf tea has helped my cramps in the past, too.
(My cycles are doing better recently, no idea why, but very glad)

Tip for the people who get really awefull pains (like, fetus position for hours because any other position is just to painfull because of the cramps) you can get naproxen from your gp (mine was free trough the NHS). You do have to ask for it specifically and talk about your pains, but it works wonders. Do watch out with the amout because they're serious stuff!
