Crazy how in the span of 3 videos I feel like I've improved more than I have in the last 6 months. Thanks so much for this series, it's helped me a ton already.
Agreed. Really wild. I've been off and on producing hip hop for years and never came across a teacher who broke down building energy so well. Always got stuck in 4 bar drum loops
This is the second video I've seen from Captain Condescender today and I gotta say I love it not only because he obviously knows his shit but because homey talks to me like I'm an idiot and it's all a part of the show. He's got me cracking up and learning hands on at the same time. TWO THUMBS UP!
Love how even if I know info that you’re discussing, I always learn something. You’ve turned me into a monster. Great job! You are the best at keeping the viewer interested out of every other UA-camr and your music is good! Thank you.
lol Dude I dunno if you're being serious but I actually hate this show. Because I'm already at the mercy of UA-cam tutorial rabbit hole hell because I'm trying to figure something out, and something tells me this guy probably has the solution to my problem but I have to tolerate him talking to me like I'm a complete idiot for like, 8 minutes. I don't know how people like this show. It legit frustrates me.
@@neoconnor4395 I love this show and if you can’t tell he’s playing a character in his videos and not being condescending at all, I think you should book an appointment with a mental health professional.
This is the drum tutorial that I needed to find a while ago. I have paid for tutorial series that don't cover the drums half as well as this series. Absolutely fantastic, and easy to follow too. Masterful piece of educating, respect!
My thought exactly! It's such a subtle thing, but I find that the most effective producers have the keyboard shortcuts and little idiosyncrasies memorized, and with how many features any DAW has, that's saying something!
I just spent way more time than i should have getting lost in these videos. Just subscribed but you deserved it from the first one. Insanely entertaining and educational.
I would argue that you can also raise energy merely by moving elements from the weaker beats to the stronger beats. (Maybe that falls under "making an element more active" but by placement, not by quantity.)
Can we get a series on working with the modes please? Yeah I know, lots of tutorials on this topic already but I'd like to see them from YOU because I think a theme song for Derek and Uncle Joe in Locrian would be neat. Also a tutorial on how to make a vocoder become a class act like in this song ua-cam.com/video/BhB6Lb7_kN8/v-deo.html
I went back and watched you suck at mixing serious because I’m about to try and put some stuff out and god damn I learned a lot. I’ve only had UA-cam teachers and you’re in if the real ones
In case anyone else is curious, I found a work around by going into Drum Machine Designer > Selecting the open high hat sample > Q-Sampler Main > Slice > and Turning on Gate at the bottom.
you have nice production tricks but I think you should consider that high "energy" is sometimes best achieved by slowing down / half timing the drums and reducing the number of elements. Half timing drums at the catchiest or loudest section is probably the easiest way to achieve a sense of power and energy
Thanks! You make good educational videos 😁I have seen alle three "You Suck at Drums" several times, and I have surely learned a lot. But ... I need to learn how I make a drum session work with an instrumental recording in Ableton Live 11. I play the guitar, and I like to record popular songs which I organise in several tracks for guitar only. For that I sometimes need a drum track to back the whole thing a little up. Let's say I have a melody, where I have an instrumental intro, and after that I need drums for verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, and an outro where the drums stops before the song. How do I set that up in Ableton - so that the drum session starts at the right time, it shifts between verse, chorus and outro at the right time and stops at the right time. If you coukd help me with that I would very much appreciate it 👍
could u please do one on modulation like changing the pitch of certain number of drum sounds like hihats, I don't think there's anyone who would explain it better than you :,
You know what would make this sound better? ACOUSTIC drums, you know? Drums that actually sound like drums. There's lots of free VST's out there that do that. Electronic toy "drum" samples sound like shit no matter what you do. Also no round robins or velocity layers.
Crazy how in the span of 3 videos I feel like I've improved more than I have in the last 6 months. Thanks so much for this series, it's helped me a ton already.
This is exactly what I felt
really shows the power of a good teacher

3:30 YOU CAN JUST DO THAT? My life has changed.
same here bro!!
i do this in a different way, instead of using the sample in one shot mode i just put it in classic. i've never noticed this gate/trigger option.
Same! This made my life a lot easier
@@blearmusic lol so true
Shit + Tab as well :)
the subtle shortcut callouts are a great bonus

Do most of these tips work on older Ableton versions, like 7? Cos I suck at DAW.
