@@savagex466-qt1io yea. I don't get it. Not even any spears in Skyrim, which was supposed to be inspired by historic Viking culture. But Todd left the spears out, go figure.
Fun fact: spears were used all the way to the musket era, and were across history just as if not more common than swords. Spears were actually used as a main weapon in most infantry formations, while swords used to be relegated as self-defense and backup weapons (sort of the way handguns are used nowadays). stumbled on your channel a few weeks ago been watching your vod's renewed my love for morrowind, i had it on the first xbox and beat it front and backwards.
For my Spear user, I went with an Argonian with a specialisation in magic. Primary attributes endurance and agility. Major skills; spear, medium armour, destruction, alchemy and unarmoured (you can't wear boots as a beast race). Minor skills: alteration, mysticism, enchant, speechcraft and mercantile. Star Sign: The Mage for extra magicka. I'm playing him as a tanky spell caster, that uses a spear when his magicka runs out, or to fight the various aggressive animals in Vvardfell. Alchemy is going to net me a load of fortify potions, turning me from a Morrowind character into a Fallout character. And I'll be able create magic spears and armour to give myself an even greater edge. If I need to murder somebody, I'll be able to provoke them into attacking me, and I'll be able to get good prices from merchants. Well, that's the theory, and it's working out ok so far. I have issues with the damage from other mages, but I'll be dumping points into endurance at a healthy rate, so that won't last for long.
It's worth noting the Lady towersign is broken with OpenMW, and simply does not increase your health on level up in the slightest. It counts as a fortify endurance, which only boosts your fatigue. Which 4 attributes boost.
This guide was great for when I inevitably restarted. For anyone wanting an endgame spear, you can get one by going under St. Delyn Canton into the sewers, and talking to a statue, then completing its quest of defeating a bull netch with a fork found in an Argonian's shack.
One of my favorite builds was a Bosmer thief/acrobat using a spear. Late game it's unrivaled in how fun it is. Jumping across entire rivers, spearing people like it's no one's business. Only wearing exquisite clothes ofc. Then you become a werewolf and you will straight up jump across the map in minutes.
For leveling up, use some poor weapons like chitin and iron spears and such, even and especially in later levels so you don't need to waste money on repairing valuable items. Also it is preferable to do as little damage as possible so do a swing with a chitin spear for example. More damage you do, more your weapon degrades and damage value doesn't raise your xp gain, only the fact that the hit connected counts. This way you can just beat up some kwamas with it to level up, and if you are really spice, train your restoration by healing your enemy kwama when it starts to get low so you can go on leveling up your melee.
it's more of a fun early-game focused guide. it's pretty far from a min-max, since Nords are vastly inferior to Orcs and Redguards in combat builds, Medium Armor is the worst at endgame, Acrobatics/Athletics as major skills will mess with attribute levelling, Mercantile is pretty pointless, Atronach is the better birthsign for tanking over Lady, and for the "nimble" playstyle Warrior or Thief would be more optimal than Lover. but when you min-max to that degree you can quickly kill your own fun.
Ah yes my beloved spear is finally getting some love. Also my fave race is actually viable for once lol. Argonians im this game get overlooked so much just because they dont get the boots of blinding speed its sad glad to see em get love for once
Helpful video. I'm currently running a female Nord spear fighter with shortswords as backup. Nordic ringmail cuirass for medium armor and the Nordic fur plus leather bracers for light armor. That's the best combination to get her looking like a proper barbarian.
honorable mention to the illuruk spear. the fortify spear 10 points makes it comparable to the bound spear. defiantly not the best but you wont have to cast it or worry about it running out mid fight. also with the night eye effect you could turn down your brightness and see morrowind grittier and just pull out the spear like a torch.
Thats definitely a an honorable mention. I was using that as a torch on a non-spear character for a while just for the novelty of it lol. It now sits in my loot museum in the Imperial Chapel in Ebonheart :)
Another cool thing you can do with a weapon like a spear is enchant it with the Bound version set on Cast When Strike. Whenever you hit someone with it, it upgrades to the Bound version automatically
I was just considering a spear build and this was in my recommended. My pc listening to my thoughts again. I hope they bring back spears for ES6 and let us use em with shields. I wanna live out my hoplite dreams
Another point for the bound spear is that it weighs so little it costs the minimum fatigue to swing. With a very small constant effect restore fatigue you can profit fatigue while fighting with it. So its great to keep in your back pocket even past the start of the game.
You can start as a Redguard with 85 of Endurance. The first 3 levels you max it to 100 with spear, that way every level you gain after is +10 health, the max you can have in this game.
Argonian spearman was my first character way back in 2007 when I wanted to play Oblivion so bad but my Geforce 4000 had no shader support so I went to the next best thing (Morrowind). Eventually got the chance to play Oblivion but ended up enjoying Morrowind way more. Funnily enough the same thing happened with Fallout 3/Fallout 2.
I've had a lot of fun with an orc spear archer using the steed birthsign, male orcs are the fastest race due to having the highest weight so you take spear, marksman, light armour, acrobatics and athletics. Drink loads alcohol and go berzerk, never caring about the agility debuff from berzerk because nobody can hit you. xD (Berzerk also works with marksman, wood elves are the worst race for an archer and that is a hill I will die on, their only bonus is an easier early game)
this bosmer would love to hear you explain how our gift is the worst for an archer{just joking around dude lol,seriously though, what led you to that conclusion}
@NoahGd6w I mean they start with a high marksman and agility which is a plus, which smooths out the rocky marksman early game but beyond that they don't have anything going for them as an archer. They are slow due to their low weight, their abilities don't help their archery and I don't really like the abilities. Other races are probably slightly worse as archers but their abilities are at least useful. Making them tankier, giving more utility, resistances and the lower marksman stat can be made up for very quickly as once a wood elf reaches 100 marksman they become as good or worse than every other race. If you like the race independently of being an archer then that's another matter, I know some people really like the charm animal spell but it doesn't seem worth it to me as you could get the tank of the Nord, magic ability of Breton/high elf, fantastic buffs from the redguard/orc. (Male orcs are also the fastest race which gives them a cool unique advantage)
@CaptainBrash the male orc speed definitely messed with me my first time playing (I was expecting them to be slow tanks essentially),and while I agree on them not being that special compared to other races, that initial boost in the beginning can be the difference between keeping a class and restarting lol,and in all seriousness there's also the fact that moving the creeper to Balmora is useful, and I really dont wanna waste more time in that painstaking process than I have to,so having that spell from the start helps a ton,at least with how I play(basically lil jon but with robin hood Archery and lust for gold
After getting my ass beat by dremora wielding ebony spears recently, i had to check this out. And yeah spearmen and pikemen are both things but parts of different militaries in different time periods. The spear was typically shorter while pikes were much longer and were used in formations of other dudes with pikes. I think they would form up and thrust the pikes at attackers, making a wall of sharp stuff being jabbed into them
Never understood the attack values of halberds. They should really be slash-based, based on their appearance. The glass halberd doesn't even have a pointy bit!
Before any new character even really leaves Seyda Neen, they should head north to the Samarys Ancestral Tomb to grab the Mentor's Ring. It's an artifact that fortifies both Intelligence and Willpower by 10, which is useful for any character (since more magicka is always useful and willpower helps increase the chances you will successfully cast and resist spells that hit you) and is pretty easy to get for a level 1 character. It's usually guarded by just a ghost and a bonewalker. It's in the urn at the end of the tomb.
Have you ever grabbed the warehouse key on the shelf behind Sellus Gravius? Can steal it the same way as the Lime Platter. Just gotta be fast. The warehouse can roll some nice early loot, or more fodder for gold.
It is said that every time you soul trap with a spear in Morrowind a small sliver of tod howards soul gets sucked in as well. This is why he smited them.
Also I dual-specced armor since I'm going multiple weapon classes. I've got medium and heavy armor specced, heavy for when he's fighting with the claymore, the battleaxe, the staff, medium armor for fighting with the spear, the saber, the shortsword, and something like a war axe or a club I'll mix and match, usually Native Bonemold pauldrons, greaves and boots and a Trollbone helm with no chest piece.
I just got this game and made a Breton mage, loved it but found a lot of difficulty, it's genuinely a hard world to get around in at level 1. Then I made a second character to run alongside the first and compare experiences. Went for a Nord, majors in Long Blade, Blunt Weapon and Spear, and minors in Axe and Short Blade. At level 1 with my little halberd I was just destroying everything in my path. I'm actively having to remind myself to switch to my claymore or my club because I'll just spear thrust everything in my path in one to two hits. I killed a whole Orc and two Kwama with this thing. The big Kwama, not the little worms, the crazy things that cast spells at you. Now I've actually got the title of Spearman and I got a whole outfit to match, chain cuirass and greaves with the matching helm and a big puffy-sleeved shirt. With my halberd I look like a proper Legion Spearman, like I should be guarding a gate, or going to rescue a kidnapped woman. Meanwhile my mage is hardlining for Telvanni. Slavery is cool, Empire sucks, whatever, just give me the magic. Edit: I should clarify that the Nord owns a slave too, he's not like staunchly pro-slavery, he'll free her if they make him but otherwise he's going back and buying two or three more, these guys are great for combat.
Early in the video you say you don't know who used spears historically other then the Greeks/Romans, the answer is EVERYBODY, spears is one of the first weapons devised by humans back in the stone age, spears were standard equipment for vikings, medieval armies had hundreds of spears, and halberds (wich Morrowind counts as spears) were considered best-in-slot for knights onnthe battlefield, heck pikes (long spears) were so important that the era after medieval times are refered to as the "Pike and shotte" era, even today spears live on in the form of Bayonets (knifes on guns)! Spears truly don't get the respect they deserve.
Made a character with this build in TES3MPVR and it's ludicrous. The ability to ravage enemies with your spear even at level 1 is hard to pass up. Can't recommend this build enough.
Please do a blunt staff monk type build, im new to morrowind and want to try unique builds like that you cant really do in newer games but dont really know where to start
13:06 This is just wrong. Not only can you not play a female Nord if you want 50 Endurance, but an Orc of either sex will get 50 Endurance. Plus you can choose between very different stats for the male and female Orc : higher intelligence female or higher willpower and personality male. Or, more correctly, you can choose between the three. An Orc of either sex or a Male Nord.
I’ve been enjoying all the Morrowind content with your fantastic commentary. Noticed you wear a lot of Dream Theater shirts, who do you prefer, Portnoy or Mangini?
Tough question... I think Portnoy had better feel on the drums and wrote the more memorable parts, so i would take Portnoy over Mangini overall. However, the feel of DT's music has changed so much over the years that I think Mangini is the best drummer for the sound they have today, despite not being my favorite.
@@CoffeeNutGaming Couldn’t have said it better myself. I definitely prefer Portnoy, but Mangini was perfect for Distance Over Time. Also I need to give spears a try in Morrowind, thanks for the build!
honestly bound weapons just seem like really strong weapons in this game, at least early game. i loosely followed your mage build guide. i’m a high elf with long blade as a minor skill for backup but sometimes it’s just better than my destruction spells against enemies with high resistances.

This way you can just beat up some kwamas with it to level up, and if you are really spice, train your restoration by healing your enemy kwama when it starts to get low so you can go on leveling up your melee.
even better, summon ancestral ghost and swing away with your iron spear.
Playing argonian, unarmored, athletic, illusion, alteration, made me upset when spear was removed from other games. Very fun.
I'm waiting patiently for that nightblade build
Spear is a really underrated weapon. Never realised how good it was until I started using it.
Never thought I'd see min max guides for Morrowind . Thank you sir.
it's more of a fun early-game focused guide. it's pretty far from a min-max, since Nords are vastly inferior to Orcs and Redguards in combat builds, Medium Armor is the worst at endgame, Acrobatics/Athletics as major skills will mess with attribute levelling, Mercantile is pretty pointless, Atronach is the better birthsign for tanking over Lady, and for the "nimble" playstyle Warrior or Thief would be more optimal than Lover. but when you min-max to that degree you can quickly kill your own fun.
Thank you bro. I really wanted to do a spear playthrough and this guide really helped me out. Also that devil spear is amazing!
Very nice job coffee
Ah yes my beloved spear is finally getting some love. Also my fave race is actually viable for once lol. Argonians im this game get overlooked so much just because they dont get the boots of blinding speed its sad glad to see em get love for once
As an orc lover I feel you
Helpful video. I'm currently running a female Nord spear fighter with shortswords as backup. Nordic ringmail cuirass for medium armor and the Nordic fur plus leather bracers for light armor. That's the best combination to get her looking like a proper barbarian.
Sir, I love that Morrowind content.
We need more.
Thank you
honorable mention to the illuruk spear. the fortify spear 10 points makes it comparable to the bound spear. defiantly not the best but you wont have to cast it or worry about it running out mid fight. also with the night eye effect you could turn down your brightness and see morrowind grittier and just pull out the spear like a torch.
Thats definitely a an honorable mention. I was using that as a torch on a non-spear character for a while just for the novelty of it lol. It now sits in my loot museum in the Imperial Chapel in Ebonheart :)
The bound spear is awesome.
Always quality videos and also great music taste too.
Much appreciated!
i would love to see a spellsword type tutorial! always wanted to get into morrowing as my favourite type of character in other RPGs:)
In all game, I am very skilled at dodging so I love this video!
it's time to load my old argonian spearman(or spearreptile) and grab some more things to his pockets
That one shot ahhhh one shot got me on floor😂😂😂😂😂
Another cool thing you can do with a weapon like a spear is enchant it with the Bound version set on Cast When Strike. Whenever you hit someone with it, it upgrades to the Bound version automatically
Great video! Nice to reminisce, as an old-time player.
I was just considering a spear build and this was in my recommended. My pc listening to my thoughts again.
I hope they bring back spears for ES6 and let us use em with shields. I wanna live out my hoplite dreams
I think I spend more time creating new characters in these games than actually getting far in them. So many great options
7:49 "Pick a name for your class."
William Shakespeare
Billie Wigglestick
Great stuff! I like ideas for different builds.
Just found this, and I have been inspired to make an Argonian named “Stabs-Many-Things”
Another point for the bound spear is that it weighs so little it costs the minimum fatigue to swing. With a very small constant effect restore fatigue you can profit fatigue while fighting with it. So its great to keep in your back pocket even past the start of the game.
In 2024 this guy makes content based on a 20+ years old game.
Respect ❤
Gothic 1/2 also needs this kind of love
You can start as a Redguard with 85 of Endurance. The first 3 levels you max it to 100 with spear, that way every level you gain after is +10 health, the max you can have in this game.
Spears were common in battlefields, up until the napoleonic Era. It was the most common battlefield weapon in history
I was looking for a spear build for my play through and this is PERFECT 😗👌
spears are really cool,my first character that was "succsseful" was a heavy armor nord, really cool skill
Thank you, this will be my first playthrough.
I'll spare you over 32 minutes and tell you straight how to spear: Pointy end goes into the enemy.
I've had a lot of fun with an orc spear archer using the steed birthsign, male orcs are the fastest race due to having the highest weight so you take spear, marksman, light armour, acrobatics and athletics. Drink loads alcohol and go berzerk, never caring about the agility debuff from berzerk because nobody can hit you. xD
(Berzerk also works with marksman, wood elves are the worst race for an archer and that is a hill I will die on, their only bonus is an easier early game)
this bosmer would love to hear you explain how our gift is the worst for an archer{just joking around dude lol,seriously though, what led you to that conclusion}
@CaptainBrash the male orc speed definitely messed with me my first time playing (I was expecting them to be slow tanks essentially),and while I agree on them not being that special compared to other races, that initial boost in the beginning can be the difference between keeping a class and restarting lol,and in all seriousness there's also the fact that moving the creeper to Balmora is useful, and I really dont wanna waste more time in that painstaking process than I have to,so having that spell from the start helps a ton,at least with how I play(basically lil jon but with robin hood Archery and lust for gold
argonian spear crit build was my fav ever, love these guys. Spears so broken witj that range tho
The only ones I know who used spears, the Greeks and Romans, my friend the pointy stick is the most common weapon in every civilization
That 16 minute intro def killed this video
It is said that every time you soul trap with a spear in Morrowind a small sliver of tod howards soul gets sucked in as well. This is why he smited them.
I'm glad mysticism and illusion are there, so I can intervention and paralyze. Have to be the most useful.
The King of Weapons shines!
Spear was always my favourite.
you have excellent taste (and endurance)
Also I dual-specced armor since I'm going multiple weapon classes. I've got medium and heavy armor specced, heavy for when he's fighting with the claymore, the battleaxe, the staff, medium armor for fighting with the spear, the saber, the shortsword, and something like a war axe or a club I'll mix and match, usually Native Bonemold pauldrons, greaves and boots and a Trollbone helm with no chest piece.
Thank you Coffee My Hero
Fast weapons with cast on strike enchantments do more dps than a slow, higher damage weapon. You can hit more often landing the spell more times.
Thank you for the videos
I appreciate that. Thanks for checking em out!
Spear go boop
Amazing stuff, thank you! Subbed
Sweet! Glad you enjoyed it 🤘
Always cracks me up the complaining about slaughterfish-when a simple water walking spell would solve the issue. 😂😂
Spear is essential for my Khajiit Kollop pearl fisherman rp build.

I’d love a night blade build!
Thank you, Sir
Galmis Dren? Our buddy the Duke has another criminal family member...
115 AGI lv 1 Argonian, yup not busted at all! great video CoffeeNut!
Clearly not! Haha. Thanks for checking it out!
Dagoth Ur: Yes, the spear is a superior weapon, but why would you want to play as a farm tool?
Yes :D more love for spear and halberds!
The Halberd having a terrible chop stat is incredibly insulting.
You can enchant something with a permanent water walking effect
More love for Spears :D
