    Couple of updates.
    First, that manual focus issue at 7:11 is indeed a lens issue, and not a camera issue per se, but considering all of the Sony lenses I have used have this problem, I still think it's a relevant issue to bring up. Sorry for the misinformation though, that's indeed not a problem inherent to the camera itself, but the lenses.
    Second, after more testing, I wish I had emphasized just HOW good the Dual Image Stabilization on the GH5 is. It's pretty close to miraculous. It's not exactly a replacement for a glidecam or a handheld stabilizer when you're walking around, but it's damn close. And when you're doing static shots, even on a bumpy bus or airplane, it's incredibly stable. One note though, it doesn't kick in until a couple of seconds after the camera is turned on, so just keep that in mind when you're shooting.

      Also, the audio preamps on the A7s ii are far cleaner than the GH5. After using it more and more, there is a clear, noticeable difference. The GH5 is certainly still usable, but the A7s preamp is actually decent with a Rode Videomic Pro.

      autofocus is overrated ! you need it quick as sheet only if you shot VLOGS like LOGAN PAUL and you need to focus in 0.1 sec. otherwise its useless i mean in real life condition. who dafook needs quick autofocus? in bouth they are quick enough less the a second....so don't make a big deal out of some commercial-point advertisement and try to use it in real life condition, ok?

      I went with the A7s II. Just bought it. I feel like user interface and design are luxuries that are just starting to unfold. All cameras have basic controls that you must must master to become a filmmaker and no matter the camera, you will eventually master the controls. I'm coming from a Canon 7D, I'm literally so pumped to get my new A7s II.

      ahh. I am jealous. I think I want one camera and then my mind switches. I may just end up with the GH5 right now due to budget..and I think it will be the best all around in my price range.. but I think eventually down the line I will be owning something from Sony because those sensors are too hard to pass up.

    I sold my A7sii for the gh5 a year ago. the 10-bit color, battery life, and no record limit are incredible features on the gh5 and mostly the reasons why I switched. gh5s handles low light well and metabones with ef lenses give great bokeh.

    For the battery issue, you can find micro usb chargers that can charge two sony batteries at the same time. The charger can also run off an external battery pack. I go through batteries like crazy especially in the winter and this setup is 100% necessary in those circumstances. Great video, love your others as well!

    • @jasonlam8588

    This is one of the best camera reviews and comparisons I’ve ever seen! Because it is based on actual usage! Many reviews are based on maybe a couple of days with the gear. Sometimes it feels like the reviewer is just listing all the specs and that’s a bout it. But this goes into depth about all the small quirks you’ve found and how it actually is to use in real life. It’s so much more useful than many other reviews. Thanks for making this.
    (Yes, this is the second time I watch this... look, it just popped up in the suggestions okay! :P)

    So would you say that the GH5's low light performance is considerably worse than the A7Sii, or GH5 still performs fairly well? I'm upgrading from a t3i so I think either camera is going to be an upgrade in the low light department.

    The focusing (fly by wire) depends on the lens not the camera body. Part of the issues your having with the peaking and focusing on the A7sII is because it is a full frame camera, there is actually less in focus. Focus will always be more difficult on a larger sensor. The menu system is strange but I don't have a problem finding what I need. Record time nightmare? I shoot professionally and yes the record limit is not ideal I guess all my years of using both motion picture cameras with say a 10-12min run and older high end video formats with 30 minutes tapes the limit here isn't much of and issue for me. There’s always a need for a subject to take a break or find space between interview questions. It’s usually recommend you not use any stabilizer when on a tripod but I guess if it works on the Panasonic GH5 then use it, but I wouldn't expect that to work with any other camera. The Panasonic GH5 produces awesome video aesthetic images. The A7sII's images more rival the look of film and more higher end cinema cameras. It is frequently used as an B or C camera to be intercut with higher end cinema cameras where things like auto focus are not an issue. What's most important to your production, run and gun ergonomics or when carefully shot and graded very cinematic images at a comparatively low cost for the delivered aesthetic.

    Good video! A couple of really good things about the GH5 you didn't hit on are the new joystick button which FLIES around the menu system and is great fro moving the focus point, and also the "My Menu" customizable menu folder. Keeping all your most used menu items here really speeds things up.

    Ok lets do this. 7 years had passed and im still rocking both cameras and a gh4.
    One thing th a7s lineup and any sony is the ability to zoom in while under recording, something i wish the panasonics do.
    Its not the cameras fault that the fpcus ring on your lens is bad. Take the 50 1.8 G OSS apsc. Thag is a bad focus ring. Use the full frame equivalent the 50 1.8 the cheap one, and the focus ring is smooth and fast and accurate.

    Single np-fw50 weights 45 grams, even if you took 10 of those, they would practically add no weight in contrast to other equipment you're carrying anyway. Split that to three people and its ~160g a person. If the battery charging is a hassle, get a battery charger with more slots, or just add many of those in a extension cord.
    Changing batteries still sucks, but getting a battery grip would help much, eventhough its adding bulk and a little weight.

    Sony shooter here, so many good points made in your video. Sony needs to build on these complaints. Thank you for this.
    Stupid tip: You can set the camera to Viewfinder-only before entering the time-lapse app and then it's a pain in the ass to set up the time lapse, but this drastically improves battery life. I've gotten up to 7 hours of time lapse on one charge doing this and turning airplane mode on.
    30 minute record time can be very easily removed by installing sony-pmca.appspot.com/apps TWEAK app on the camera.
    I do have a question, on the GH5, that fancy button to immediately switch between LCD and EVF, can both the LCD and EVF be turned entirely off to save battery life?

    one thing im aware of is that the gh5 has a max 400 mega bits per second as oppose to sonys max of 120 mega bits per second. and to really make the gh5 a real killer is to use a metabones speedbooster. that kills all the alpha series lineup.
    the gh5 with metabones speedbooster with a sigma 18-35mm f1.8 (ef mount) is a beast. and still not as expensive as the a7s

    As someone who has shot with a GH4 and a Sony A7s fairly extensively, this video is right on. The Sony will get a you a small number of advantages over the Lumix, but overall it's not nearly as pleasant to USE. Horrible ergonomics, mediocre screen, awful battery life...
    Just goes to show that you really have no idea how good a camera is until you actually use it. Specs on a page won't ever give you the full picture.

    Great real world review. Probably the best GH5 review I've seen. Although I wonder if simply using an extra LED panel or practical light for the dark campsite shots would make more sense than carrying an extra body and lens. I know sticking to available light streamlines the process somewhat, but a light just outside the shot can help a ton.

  • @Holtenstein
    @Holtenstein 7 років тому

    Everyone seems to forget the about the crop factor. It affects the aperture as well. Therefore the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 is the Full frame equivalent to the 24-70mm f5.6!!! Not and f2.8 like the manufacturer would like you to believe. If you use Speed boosters or get a faster lens that has an equal T stop closer to the Sony lens. Then the Gh5 will see much better in low light!

    HOLY SCHNAPPS CRACKLE AND POPS!!!!. FANTASTIC REVIEW FROM THIS GUY. so based on this wonderful guys review of these two barbaric beasts of a machine. His conclusion is @ 19:35 ............... 90% of his work comes from GH5 and 10% from A7Sii? Both machines deliver extreme professional results but dude invested like almost $8k on camera body and lenses alone. It's worth it if you have the clients who need and pay for your services i see. He's right, depends on what and why you need the type of camera you decide to invest in. Amazing review, I'm a GH3 GH4 owner and shooter so this review leads me in the right direction. Thanks Bruh!!! I wish I could appreciate all of the things the GH5 does well, but my main gig is weddings and low light performance is just too important. You do need the battery grip on the Sony though, not only does it hold 2 batteries it really improves the ergonomics. And then you have the luxury of getting to run one battery down all the way and change it without worrying about the camera dying because it automatically switches to the next battery. I also noticed that the field of view on the GH5 was pretty bad. Like when you were bouncing the basketball. It was 2 feet away and the trees down the street were still in focus.

      +Ethington Productions god man, I would love to just get sonys user experience people in a room and show them what is actually needed in a camera when you're using it. If I could somehow combine the two cameras I would be a happy camper.

    I love the GH5 but theres afew key things to me that makes the a7sii better which could easily be fixed w software update.
    I like how the A7sii can punch in to check focus while recording. GH5 cant do that..
    I prefer changing ISO on the A7sii as its a one finger operation compared to the GH4.
    I hope panasonic sees ur video and make this changes

  • @jakecarvey
    @jakecarvey 7 років тому

    just being picky: the gh5 is crop sensor anyway, so with equivalent lens for slo-mo crop on Sony, the A7sII will still likely have a wider FOV, so it s really not viable criticism for comparing the cameras objectively. although it does make sense in the *expectation* category

    Regarding GH5 files 10 bit not working in Premier.
    If you change to MP4 instead of MOV it will work in premier, and from what I understand you will not get any real quality loss

      That's what I've heard, but I am using MP4. It works, but they lag horribly compared to the 8-bit. I haven't tried them on the latest update yet though.

    I was trying to help my 14 year-old son find a good starter camera to shoot video and practice with After Effects. A straight up video camera seemed more practical to me because he does not want to take stills, but he wants to have manual control over focus and ISO, features that only seem available on a more conventional looking camera like the ones you have reviewed. No such thing as a regular video camera with those manual controls??? I ended up getting him a Nikon COOLPIX P530 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 42x Zoom NIKKOR Lens and Full HD 1080p Video which, for $250, seemed a reasonable starter camera for a teenager just showing interest in the hobby. I'm not sure what I'm getting at here, but I will show him this video and he can start to think about what he might need in the future. You're definitely in your element talking about cameras!

      +Rugged Camper ah very nice! I don't have any experience with that camera but I always recommend the canon t3i for beginners. You can usually get a used on with a lens for around 300 and you can learn everything you need to know from that camera. But sounds like the one you picked will do the same so good choice!

    Seriously great review. Not interested in Sony, but like the low light shots! You didn't mention the issue with the GH5 autofocus, wonder if you feel its a problem or not. Currently looking at the GH5 vs the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, both 4/3rds cameras.

    Having been using the a7s and gh4 for years now I agree on almost everything you said here.
    Minor disagreements being the lens release button on gh5/4 I actually much prefer that to the a7s.
    And your comments on the flyby wire focus.
    That's just a lens choice thing. So strange you mentioned it a body review.
    Ps you will get much better low light performance with a speed booster/fast lens.
    If you want to learn more on that subject I did a video recently called "depth of field and crop sensor misconceptions." It covers all u need to know to get the same noise levels/DOF/FOV on both a FF and M43. :)

      @AdventureArchives  7 років тому +1

      +biscuitsalive oh thank you for that! I actually didn't realize that was a lens thing (in retrospect though of course it's a lens thing haha). Just to my knowledge though they don't make any lenses that aren't fly by wire for the full frame Sony cameras, though, right?
      And I will look into that video! I actually had a speed booster xl for the gh4 for a while but sold it to help afford the a7s ii. Maybe I'll look into it again. Thanks for the feedback!

    • @biscuitsalive

      AdventureArchives sure LUMIX lenses are FBW. But one of the main selling points for mirrorless is the short flange distance. Which means you can adapt almost any lens to them pretty easily. Not to mention all the Olympus and 3rd party and other M43 types that pop straight on. And the majority of these will not be FBW focus. (More likely completely manual. )
      But I get where your coming from, the kit lens they bundle is fly by wire. :)

      Hey there! Awesome footage on your channel. And thank you for subbing! We do actually have a drone - a DJI Phantom - but we only get a couple of shots with it for our videos because A) it can be a hassle to bring on backpacking trips and B) we don't want to disturb the wildlife or wilderness experience, so if we do take footage it's often outside of the boundary of the area we're hiking and camping in. Cheers! -Andrew

    I still don't get the fuss with low light performance on the A7SII, so little shooting I've done has been at night. Also in my experience if you want your night footage to have high production values you generally have to light it, even a little.

    • @AdventureArchives
      @AdventureArchives  7 років тому +3

      +Bduffey10 haha it's funny because he gh4's focus is even worse. I think it's just that focusing technology has advanced a lot and the gh5 didn't advance in that area so people are focusing (haha) on that a lot. My suggestion is wait till after this weekend and see if they add dual pixel auto focus to the a7s iii (assuming they announce it) and then make your decision.

I would probably get a Sony as a second but the overheating in tropical climate I can't risk. I also put a second gh4 into the hands of second shooters and they can learn it in an hour. Thanks again.

    I think the best example of the A7SII's low light performance is footage in Japan. Jawdropping. I don't know if you've had the opportunity to see that footage on an OLED monitor/phone but it's just incredible.

    You don't need 1.8 in the middle of the day though. Having bokeh just to have it is not something you want to do. The A7 is great for low light. You can get 1.8 bokeh on GH5....just get a voigtlander or noctitron...boom, bokeh. You can also get a Sigma with 1.8 and a metabooster for 1.2 effect.

    I appreciate the insight! I don’t have either camera but I have heard the GH5 is great for video with the option it has. I tried shooting a Sony once, the menu and the buttons make no sense to me. It seems like such a hard system to learn. I shoot canon, and I find it crazy easy to use; although some of the terms in the menu are definitely odd and probably a bad translation 😂

    I think that's why you need both. However, I think the Lumix is a win win! Now I'm good with my D3300, even though and I won't admit this anywhere (lol..), I wish I would of bought a early Alpha 5000 just because of weight, but I'm happy with the D3300, plus I learned on Nikon (a fm2n, shot a lot of tracking or stills), so I'm fimiluar with its format unlike shooting Med. Format.. So I'm good with my decision, even though the GH5 is a Maserati to my Pinto!... But like you said, I need to experiment with it!... Great run down Robby!! Mark...

    I used a G5 and a GH2 for most of my film projects. I've ordert the GH5 two months ago and I should have it for two weeks now.. but it didn't arrive yet do to the big demand for the camera.
    I'm really looking forward to work with the camera but at the same time I'm a little bit sad about the not so perfect low light performance. I could have also bought the A7sII but my biggest argument against it is probably that I already have so many MFT lenses that I can't afford to get new lenses for a fullframe camera. ( I think I spend at least 3500 on my lenses) And I also love slow motion and I really want to have the 60 fps at 4k.
    But at least I have a friend who is using an a7sII as his main camera and he came already along for a few times when I shot a night scene :)

    11:24 it is weird that you guys couldn't change the lens with gh5 release button placement.
    Im using 5dm2 and the button placement is the same with gh5.
    I could change lens with only my left hand. just grip the lens with your hand on top of the lens, thumbs facing your body and press the button using your thumbs. sometimes I just used the side of the thumb if i need extra grip. even changed 70-200 with this method.

    Great review! I was wondering about your battery solution...
    I've used a folding solar panel but the reality is that it takes up more space and weight than a pile of batteries and it's not much of a cost saving either. Plus you are limited by how much power you can get, and the conditions.
    Obviously your short-term, high-demand scenario would be beyond it's charging capacity but it was useful when I was off grid for 2 weeks. It kept my phone, camera and GPS tracker/beacon charged for the whole journey without any issues, with only 1 small USB powerbank operating as a buffer.
    I'm still stuck in that mindset but spare batteries are probably the more practical solution. :/
