I was born in Anchorage, and lived there most my life, watching this video makes me miss it so much more than I already do. Definitely an amazing place.
This is exactly what I was looking for this morning. Alaska State Troopers just wasn't enough. I can also appreciate many of the comments that were already left. Thanks for having almost exactly my idea.
Anchorage is a pretty nice place to live. It's quiet, but at the same time, there's stuff to do and it never gets THAT boring. If you love the outdoors, you're going to love the whole year. Short summers, but nice, green summers and usually a somewhat long winter. AC is pretty scarce in the area. Typically hits 70 on sunny summer days (80s this summer, and 90s expected this week), and 20s for winter highs. The city is doing nothing but growing too, compared to in 2009 when I moved here.
really from my heart I love this winter .this ice .this cold weather . I really love all the views in Alaska and hope one day to live and work there and finish all my life in this country
Great compilation! I now my way around Anchorage like the back of my hand, side streets and all. The shot driving down 5th where the landes are drifting and it's like 15 degress , man that made me feel a certian way. Looks almost exactly the same now. October 2022 It would be cool to do all the neighboorhoods/areas Jewel Lake, Hillside, East Side, West Side, Government Hill
I lived in alaska from 1947 to 2004 except for two periods of three years each, mostly in the anchorage area and wish i had never left but old age caught up with me.
I was there from 1961 to 1977. Were you there for the earthquake. My dad was stationed at Elmendorf and was at 6981st doing communications during and after the quake. I miss it when it was smaller and everyone knew each other. Did you ever go in the Sourdough Bar?
I loved Alaska. Today it was over 100 but in Anchorage it was proberly 70. If I was rich I would live in Anchorage in the summer and go south for the winter. We ate Thanksgiving dinner outside last year.
Depending on what time you arrive in Anchorage, there's some fun stuff to do. The state fair is held in Palmer (a city 40 miles north) every August (late August-early September), you can view the northern lights pretty well on the northern sides of town with little light (fall, spring). Fur Rondy is a festival around the traditions of Anchorage that happens every late February. Gas in the city is about $3.90/gal. Anchorage (the city, at least), is about 12 by 12 miles, not including north of AFB
Was up there last July. Beautiful in summertime. Highs in the 60s and 70s. People are great. Sun is up before 5am and sets around midnight. It's a decent sized city. I'm not sure I could handle it in winter though.
I like the coverage, but need to have more variety. i havent been to anchortown in over twenty years. thanks for the view. maybe show a trip to kenai, or go up on the mountain:)
I'm going to Anchorage in two weeks, gonna photograph the scenery, visit the locals, and take in the winter ambience. What else can I expect in good ol' Anchorage. I hope to meet some really cool people at the local hangouts and bars.
Let's say the cost of living index of the US is 100, Anchorage would be about 135. Fruits/vegetables in Anchorage are usually more aged because of shipping time, and they're usually $.60-$1.00 more per pound. Clothing is about the same costs as the lower-48. Gas is around L.A. prices. One could live in Anchorage pretty well off a $40,000 salary, along with the $1,000-$2,000 PFD checks after you've been here longer than a calendar year and are a resident.
I was told you'd go crazy if you never left the Anchorage bowl. Really, it isn't all that bad to just not leave Anchorage other than once a year. The city has really grown in the 3 years I've lived here, there's lots to do recreationally, as there's pretty much parks/wilderness all around the city (within 10 miles), and there's plenty of stores and other places to visit, just a normal city life with lots more sights, wilderness, and wildlife.
There is some skate parks here and there but you'll have to just go find them. We have an epic Skate Park here in Bethel, AK. really cool stunt ramps and other stuff. I wish the best of luck for you to find an awesome skate park to skate at lol
The river looks like Lena. Do you have winter or cold mist? Do you have double window at cars? Do you use covers to make sure cars will turn on after work? (We call them Natasha garage гараж Наташа)
Haha it looks like it wasn't that crowded that day as you drove, or at least not too bad. 5th ave can be extremely crowded, especially when people are coming home from work but that's what is nice is once you hit the New Seward Highway! lol
First off, I see "(1/2)" but I never found "(2/2)'. Second, nice to see that you actually ventured beyond downtown, unlike many other videos on here. Now, for what has changed along 5th Avenue since this video was shot: 3:58 The two-story building behind the gas station, 619 E. 5th, has since been torn down. The lot is sitting vacant. As downtown is full of vacant lots and for sale or for lease signs, that isn't likely to change anytime soon. 4:30 The "Visitor Information" place is gone (the building is still standing but vacant) and I'm pretty sure the cache alongside it is also no longer there. 4:38 The Black Market is out of business. That place was an institution; it had been there since at least the 1970s or 1980s. I believe they got into trouble or actually shut down for selling "drug paraphernalia". 4:42 The Days Inn hasn't been the Days Inn for quite a while, though they're still in business as a hotel. 4:53 Florcraft moved out to Dimond Boulevard around the beginning of this year. 5:22 The building at the northwest corner of 5th and C, formerly a bank building back in the days when we had a multiplicity of local financial institutions, is now the Anchorage outlet of The North Face. 5:27 The Fur Alaska building has also been torn down. Actually, what you see from the street was a false front. The building itself was actually an old wood frame house and two corrugated metal warehouse-type structures connected together, and possibly dated to the first half-dozen years or so of Anchorage's existence (so it's quite possible that it was demolished because it was deemed out of compliance with building codes). There's been an attempt to develop an outdoor market on the lot. 5:31 The tent/canopy on the corner of 5th and D was the seating area for a salmon bake restaurant, owned and operated by relatives of long-ago fleeting "celebrity" Mary Kay Letourneau. A bar formerly sat on that corner, which burned down in 1970 and the lot was never rebuilt. The adjacent restaurant building on D Street was torn down and the lot is now used for parking. 5:48 The high-rise across from the skywalk, 601 W. 5th, was damaged enough in the earthquake last year to where there's been talk of tearing it down. 6:12 Holy Family Parish expanded its physical plant recently, though what was replaced is not visible in this view. The building at 5th and I that can be seen is their education center. It was formerly McMahan's Department Store, a business which began in Anchorage's earliest years and went out of business during the 1980s real estate crash. 6:23 J. C. Morris Insurance is another old, old Anchorage business that seems to have disappeared. (Actually, I take that back. Google says they moved to Midtown. They were on 5th Avenue for somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 years.)
thanks for the ride. I enjoyed it a lot although sometimes, you were driving rather too fast (1:50 to 3:15) for example. now, I'm going to see the (2/2)
no, I believe you ... I simply did not know that ... I thought there was only about 1/2 hour of limited light, at around noon ... I love Alaska! the thing that would maybe stop me from living there is that I cannot sleep in daylight ... and in July, there is almost Zero darkness, correct? This is all very helpful information.
ALASKA I will come soon enshallah just waiting me HLA HLA HLA amazing city sb7an allah!!! يارب تسهل الامر وتيسر الاحوال سبحان الله وبحمده سبحان الله العظيم ولاحول ولاقوة الا بالله .. ^_*
I am planning visiting Alaska so I would like some more information such as how big the city is? how much fun I would find? I love wilderness but I am not sure if I could do it by myself or exists some turistic trip services also I would like to know how expensive the city is: I have found some hotels starting 200 bucks per night. Need some help, I am from Mexico City
Forget Anchorage, unless you like the city; Eagle River is much better and it's not as yuppie as many people think. I came here 5 years ago with the Air Force and retired here. I generally don't think the city is very 18-25 year old-friendly as many of the young military just stay in their dorms. As for weather, I think it's broken 80 degrees maybe 2 days out of my time here, but it feels hotter, since air conditioning in almost nonexistent
So I was thinking of putting this down as one of my duty stations in army. Good or bad? I'm 18 so would it have a lot of things for an 18 year old to want to do on his free time. Plus I live in nyc so does this city have that feel?
It gets about 4-6 hours sunlight in winter. Tourism is mostly dead in winter and the uphill and downhill roads are bad news for all drivers. Highways are straight up dangerous in winter especially when it's unpredictable because its either you crashing or someone crashing onto you. Anchorage in summer isn't too bad but once you done half of the city got to offer it gets boring.
Hey i was wondering next year sometime i might be coming to alaska but im kinda freaked out cuz idk if my cell phone is gonna work i have verizan can anyone help plz?
Snow on the ground from october to april, Summer from june to september. Summer temps in the 60s and 70s with occaisional low 80s Fairbanks gets warmer in summer and much colder in winter.Tourist season js may 15 to sept 15 Drizzly rain in summer especially late summer.A local joke is that alaska has two seasons; big winter and little winter.
In June and most part of July there is no real night, just 4-5 hours of dusk. I don't live there so i can't tell you how dark the dusk is, considering that Anchorage is a realy cloudy city. And i really recommend you to see gaisma.com, it's a really good site where you can get all these info.
so i'm assuming you were drunk when you typed this because it looks like you forgot to go on past 3rd grade. and um. I lived there for about 2 months because me and my dad moved from willow to wasilla to anchorage. and its kinda loud sometimes. but I really liked it and it was a big change from willow. but I still prefer willow. or wasilla. wasilla is more for people who just moved to alaska. Moving Back In One Month!JYES!!!!!!!!!!!
There's people panhandling and hanging out on that corner all the time. Some of them received a positive write-up in the paper recently. They didn't capitalize on it, as they were out there screaming and carrying on and assaulting each other that same day in view of who knows how many people.

Eu sou brasileiro mas gosto de frio, eu moraria nessa cidade com o maior prazer. Parabéns pelo vídeo.
Tu fala isso pq não mora. O frio excessivo e deprimente, isso é fato.

Just got back from Anchorage and I loved it! I could never live there though. The snow and cold is just a little too prolonged for this Texas guy.
I lived in Anchorage the day you filmed this, I swear I saw my car ahead of you when you were downtown...

I'd love to see some historical footage of highschools and parks and stuff.

I'd love to live in Alaska during the 6 months of night.

One thing that stands out no high rises. There are alot of good official reasons. But I think it's a place that's comfortable with who it is.
I have never been in Alaska. I live in Moscow Russian Federation. I love fishing since childhood.
At 8:31 minute ... the woman with the homeless family notice .... there are many people sih home in Alaska? Are there many poor people in Alaska?

okay, ... if it's January ... and this is Anchorage ... why is the sun out? Serious question. Shouldn't it be dark?
I feel bad for that woman with the homeless sign. Alaska is no place to be standing around in the cold.
man miss Alaska.
Alaska is so awesome!!!! this guy must have very expensive equipment, with the road noise and all
It looks like a snowy day in New Jersey
I live in Alaska

I agree. Like Portage Place. Anchorage is like Edmonton too.
Like Edmonton? In what way?
@minglestop The lines are there but its winter and there is snow on the ground . lol
i just have one question an would appreciate an honest answer. how is the job market out in alaska?
I HOPE ONE DAY BE THERE.

Did you go there? You would have to like to ski, ice skate, or go to night clubs. It does not feel like NCY.
I lived here 4 years!!!

how much would getting my truck up to anchorage if I'm flying up there ?
@93joeanthony Go for it. But, I don't think any other cities have a NYC feel to them.
damn man living in alaska is rough. no skateparks for me to skate lol
You could open an indoor park and make a good business I bet. I took my son to the ones in WA when the weather was bad.
Nice video

There's people panhandling and hanging out on that corner all the time. Some of them received a positive write-up in the paper recently. They didn't capitalize on it, as they were out there screaming and carrying on and assaulting each other that same day in view of who knows how many people.

Greetings from EU!
The one thing I heard about Alaska is the Eskimo girls are either really pretty or really ugly.
@rconrbarril Jaja ok.
