      As long as the road is relatively abandoned. It's terrifying being around a ton of people who have no idea what they're doing.

      Will Crombie I live near Atlanta and when I was 16 with two months driving experience we got released out of school early because of snow and I drove a RWD Infiniti.... most chaotic driving experience ever... 10 minute drive was 30+. Ended up leaving my car at a gas station and thank god for my buddies jeep for getting me home

      The buses are running. NYC gets 2 inches of snow and everything shuts down. They even put a curfew in effect for 2 inches of snow.

    • @thorndave
      @thorndave 5 років тому

      Lol The UK doesn't need to get that much before everything shuts down, it's pretty ridiculous! Though, saying that, we hardly ever get much snow, certainly not down south where I live. Probably why we often get caught off-guard by it. Most of any accumulation we might get, tends to be more up north where it's more mountainous.

      May Devone, Cost of living, especially in and around Anchorage, is really not far from living in a large city. No sales tax in the city limit also means many will make purchases in the city and have their items shipped. My one room mate was a K-12 teacher in the bush villages, they would have one teacher go to Anchorage about once a month with a shopping list and ship a majority of their goods back to the village. There's ways to manage, never make money an object.

    I grew up in Alaska in the 60's and 70's and boy was there a ton of snow!! We went skiing at Artic snow lodge every weekend or Hillberg at Elmendorf Air Base. Since I was not driving for most of those years we took a bus and rented our skiis once we got there. You can not even believe how cheap it was in the 60's to ski. Our ski rental was .50 cents and so was the lift ticket. Sometimes with the chill factor it was so cold (-40) that we could only stay out for 15 minutes on the slope. Crazy and fun times. You could be poor and still have fun in those days.

  • @msmcneill314
    @msmcneill314  10 років тому +7

    hebneh, it comes down to follow following the track of the vehicle who drove before you and using your imagination to remember where curbs and medians are. Even plowed, you'll find yourself driving on 2-3" of packed snow a majority of the winter. Its nothing like the East Coast where I grew up understanding that a plowed road was to the pavement.

    I miss the snow so much. Would drive through it all the time in Idaho. Miss the blizzard running over the windshield and light packing sound when you drive through the packed down snow. Miss it all so much. In a good 4matic or smart AWD vehicle, you can drive around all night long in this stuff on the main roads and never get stuck. Just enjoy the peace and quiet. No ice, just freshly packed snow.

      I grew up in Pennsylvania, I had some experience with cold and snow. Take your time, keep your distance, especially at stop lights, keep a car length between you and the stopped car in front of you. Memorize the roads, so when they are nothing but white, you can use your imagination, "there's a median there, I should keep a little to right." You'll be surprised how fast you adapt, its not bad.

    I grew up in Va and remembered some snowstorm we had, of course we got shut down. Until I was 15 and a superintendent from Alaska decided that he knew what he was doing and had our schools opened with 6 plus inches of snow on the ground and more storms coming. Bad idea because of our roads and all. the school bus I was on went into a skid hit a tree and went on it side, injuring all of us even before we got to school. three other buses where in crashes as well. That moron got some serious shit from, the county and state officials plus our parents and still tried to open schools the next day. All bus drivers went on strike. My parents along with others sued but didn't go to court insurance settled with us all. Mr Alaska got fired.

    I hate that people think this is a daily life in Alaska. Alaska is, helping one another, playing outside, playing on devices, going to school, and MUCH more. Anchorage is a city. Not a place what has wooden cabins for houses. My house is like anyones in Florida or Mississippi or any place in the lower 48

    At the start you were pretty close to my neighborhood. We'd like to have that six inches now to cover up the dirty and icy remains of the only snow so far this winter (11/3/16). I still have green grass showing in my back yard. Been that way the last couple years... kids have a hard time finding a decent sledding hill.

I'm planning on visiting Anchorage at the end of February this year and I'm wondering how cold will it be and does has I been snowing a lot like this in recent years around that time I plan to go? Any advice on what to pack would be greatly appreciated! And perhaps any other info or tips for when I visit would also be awesome. Thanks!

    I've been thinking a lot of moving there. I'm used to driving in the snow and love the cold. what's the avg temp in winter? 10f? 5f?

    • @msmcneill314
      @msmcneill314  10 років тому

      Varies where you live. Last two years the winters have been around the 30's. Move further inland, the temps drop to those 10, 5, negatives. But there's a flip side, interior can get into the 80-90. Word of advice, if you have a strong career or job skill, it makes it easier to find a job and establish yourself.
