Everyone underestimates Renly, maybe because he got so little screen-time, but he is the only one of Steffon‘s sons who had a lick of political sense. Stannis on the other hand is the epitome of impracticality. Because he treats all of his motivations as principle, rather than just things that he wants, he is constantly balking at the idea of any compromise, a really bad trait for a leader. Just as bad as is his inability to take things and people as they are, and then deal with them on a practical level (which Robert and Renly are both capable of); Stannis always compares everything and everyone to how he thinks they should be. This also extends to his brothers and arguably fuels his irrational contempt for them. He cares more about which castle he should have gotten than his own blood. Not only is this a terrible sign for a leader, it‘s one of the reasons the Lannisters win the war. The smart families in ASOIAF, the Starks, Tyrells and Martells all know to stick together as a family. Stannis basically sabotages his cause by caring more about status than about family. If he and Renly worked together, they would have crushed Tywin.

Quick question I hope you can answer. Do you have an audiobook recording of your voice for the Game of Thrones series I would absolutely love to listen to you read all five books
Stannis: Renly is a fool and probably doesn‘t take advice from a maester Also Stannis: Not taking any of the excelllent advice of Cressen. Gets outplayed by Tyrion, like a BoSs
you mean the splendid advice of selling half his kingdom to a 15 year old and giving his only daughter over to a batshit crazy, vindictive helicopter mother for the chance of a shitty alliance who would've never materialized? Stannis is still alive and kicking in Winds, as for Renly - this qutoe from AFFC sums it up :"Brienne did not fear Ser Hyle, but he was one of Randyll Tarly's captains. A whistle, and a hundred men would come running to defend him. "Am I to be arrested?" "What, for Renly? Who was he? We've changed kings since then, some of us twice. No one cares, no one remembers." He laid a hand lightly on her arm. "This way, if you please.""
@@DpathosJ my brother in Christ: Stannis does not have a Kingdom. He has a claim to a Kingdom, but that‘s very, very different from having a kingdom. You have to actually win the war and to that end, yes, Cressen‘s advice is excellent. An alliance with Robb certainly would have won Stannis the war. He would have been King. Sure, he might have to give up the North, but that‘s only half the Kingdom geographically (not economically or militarily), and he could probably have gotten the Riverlands back as part of the deal. You gotta love armchair generals who are like „nOo, dOn‘T LeT tHeM StEaL yOuR KiNgDoM bro“ but like I said, it‘s not your Kingdom until you‘re actually sitting on the Iron throne. Which is what the alliance with the North would have gotten Stannis: he would have sat on the Iron Throne. Ok, but say he doesn‘t wanna divide the Kingdom. You know how you do that? Ally with Renly instead. Yes, Renly wants to be King, for which he‘s qualified, but he is a Baratheon, you can beat the Lannisters easily, unite 5 of the 7 Kingdoms and then Strongarm Robb from a position of strength, with a bigger Army and Robb‘s sister in hand, he‘ll give up his claim, problem solved, realm united. Sure, Stannis might not be King, but the Realm is united and safe, and not run by psycho-Joffrey or any illegitimate baby born of incest. That‘s overall pretty good, especially if you are doing things for the good of the realm. As a bonus, you also don‘t commit fratricide, which is a crime so heinous that even cold-blooded killers frown on it, not to mention the gods. And hey, who knows, a less dumb Stannis might have gotten Renly to give up his claim even. Renly probably only insists on it because Stannis is a total dick to him during that entire negotiation. But even if not, Renly is gay and doesn‘t even want to produce heirs: that means Stannis can probably make a deal for his daughter to inherit the throne, which is still pretty good. All of these are very sensible options. Whereas what Stannis actually does ends up going terribly for him. He murders his own brother over a crown, only to lose spectacularly and end up in a worse position than he started out in. Sure, he‘s alive now, but his chances of long-term survival are not great, and his chances of becoming King are almost zero. Sure, the northern lords will probably back him if he puts a Stark in Winterfell, but it‘s doubtful they will fight another, even more difficult war for him than the one Robb already lost, just so he can be King. No, at this point Stannis literally has a worse chance of becoming King or enforcing his claim than House Blackfire. That‘s pretty bad. And even if he does win: Stannis claims to be working for the good of the realm, but he‘s clearly not. Stannis‘ stubborn refusal to make compromises or ally with anyone at all was a major factor in making the War of FIve Kings into one of the worst, most destructive and deadly civil war in the history of the Realm, worse than the Blackfire Rebellion and possible on par with the Dance. This war was fucking brutal and laid waste to huge swathes of the Kingdom and arguably did even worse economic damage. In terms of being able to fend off the threat from the Others, this was pretty much the worst possible thing to have happened. Now consider that Stannis could have prevented this by just doing the smart thing and allying with either Robb or Renly. In either case the war would have been much shorter and less bloody, with orders of magnitude less economic destruction. But Stannis actually cares more about his own pride than he cares about the realm. He is a literal child who helped lay waste to the kingdom he is laying claim to, with nothing to show for it, all because of his damn pride, because he cared more about „what he‘s entitled to“ than about the greater good or even his own family. Cressen should have killed Stannis instead of (trying to kill) Melisandre. That would have spared everyone a lot of grief.
@@bilis2866 he‘s gay in the books as well, which makes it plausible that he won’t have any. Similar thing happened with the sons of William I, Rufus inherited first, but he was gay and never had kids, so Henry ended up inheriting the throne later and his children after him. In fairness, Henry was younger. And yes, Renly being King is in practice still a massive demand of Stannis since he is the eldest. However, I‘m actually convinced he could have talked Renly down if he wasn’t such a gigantic asshole. Renly ultimately wants the family to get along.
@@raylast3873 I mean if he is politically savvy his preferences wouldn't really matter, many of these royal couples hate each other and still pop babies out I only remember show Renly being like "ew" with Margaery which I find kinda funny, showrunners really wanted to drill down how gay he is when in the books it wasnt a big deal

Theon, what character, full of contempt, envy, pride, hubris, and confusion. I so adamantly hoped he would stay true to his real brother…to his real family, as I began reading scripts that started unveiling Theon would carry Robb’s words to Avalon. By the time I was reading this chapter of Theon, the final one of this video, I think my mind knew what was the outcome, but my heart begged for him to not relinquish his duty to the Starks, nor the duty he had to Robb, which was something deeper and more profound than any duty or honor to befall him where his namesake is confirmed. Theon was a character I rooted for, even though it was obvious the boy hadn’t entertained the respect and good treatment the Starks had honored him with, especially Robb, who had engaged Theon as a brother, after a time, a brother as much as he viewed Jon. But, it was clear, after a stretch, that Theon was doomed to allow his pride, ego, and narcissistic tendencies to lead him down a horrific path. Balon knew his son, even after all those years, or perhaps he just knew men. Maybe it was the blood in Balon that allowed him to peer in to the heart of Theon, or just the hearts of men in general he knew, but Balon played the reckless boy like a fiddle. I enjoyed Theon’s chapters, but I went from rooting for a boy that ,while he loved Robb and even acknowledged in his heart the kind treatment Ned afforded him, could not see Balon was a hard, cold, contemptuous man that would never see Theon ascend to his rightful station, regardless of the fact the Gods had given Balon the perfect opportunity to lend fences with the North and secure his the Iron islands freedom and individuality. He blamed Theon for the current situation, when the boy could do nothing to avoid his fate. It was the stupidity and weakness of his father that allowed Theon, his heir, to be taken. Any real man would have paid the iron price, denying his son be a prisoner ,and lose his head. Theon would have become the ruling heir and the next generation of Greyjoy would start their rule. It is Avalon’s contempt, idiocy, weakness, and inability to take responsibility for his past actions that lead to the iron islands being ruled by Euron…which will undoubtedly lead to the end of the Greyjoy name ruling the islands of Iron. While I despise who Theon became, I pontificate on the man he could have become, if he weren’t so like his father.
In episode 5 i think it was Melissandre was talking to Stannis' wife. She stepped naked from the bath and had no choker on. Yet in episode 10 (i think) she took off her choker and suddenly she had a dorian grey moment. Did anyone else catch it? And was the necklace supposed to be the talisman that kept her looking young?
Rubies are used for glamour. However glamour can be seen through if the eye is sharp enough. Which is why the faceless men prefer faces over glamour but they'll use both when necessary
It really is a eery 2nd dance of the dragons with the Baratheons. They destroy themselves instead of allying, Stannis losing his damn mind to the red priestess 🙄🫠🫠😑 The writing really was so horrible that we deserve justice for it if GM ever finished the MF WOW 🙄🤜
Did Melisandre get old lady naked in the books?... because that was kind of messed up. That's the one thing they could have cut from the books and I would have been cool with it. They could throw a night gown on her or something and then have her take the necklace off. And what's up with that anyways? Does the book breakdown what's going on with Melisandre? Was her purpose always to light the swords of the Dothraki during the dark night, because that went well.
Are you an ai? Legitimate question. This video features a face reveal but the video of the face doesnt synch with the audio being read. There are also tell tale signs that usually point to an ai voice actor in certain mispronounced words and when the same word is said multiple times in succesion there doesn't seem to be any variation in tone or cadence. Example: King Maekar is repeated several times as 'king maker' and could just be a pronunciation thing. I honestly can't tell anymore. These could be editing issues but there are some odd things in this video.

I hate to be that guy but the title and description of this video do not reflect the reality of this video, which is just a summary of the first several chapters of this book. I was expecting a character analysis of Melisandre, and the description led me to believe this would be an analysis of Stannis, perhaps how they are both portrayed in the show vs the book. This is not simple work, sure, but this is not content I would’ve watched as a book fan had I known what it was. It feels deceptive

"What, for Renly?
@@raylast3873 where did renly said he wasn't going to produce heirs, Show renly u mean?
@@bilis2866 he‘s gay in the books as well, which makes it plausible that he won’t have any. Similar thing happened with the sons of William I, Rufus inherited first, but he was gay and never had kids, so Henry ended up inheriting the throne later and his children after him. In fairness, Henry was younger.
And yes, Renly being King is in practice still a massive demand of Stannis since he is the eldest. However, I‘m actually convinced he could have talked Renly down if he wasn’t such a gigantic asshole. Renly ultimately wants the family to get along.
@@raylast3873 I mean if he is politically savvy his preferences wouldn't really matter, many of these royal couples hate each other and still pop babies out
I only remember show Renly being like "ew" with Margaery which I find kinda funny, showrunners really wanted to drill down how gay he is when in the books it wasnt a big deal
Please keep making Robert videos! I sometimes watch his videos as well because I am a fan of the short horror format, and the main character in his videos is just soooo creepy!
On a more serious note, I have family members who sometimes talk like him. It is good to sometimes see a common sense counter position to all the anti science nonsense.
With everyone burning all the food I don't think more than a third of the population will survive to spring like holy shit it's already autumn and for some reason autumn and spring are always super short
New to the channel! I thought it was just gonna be a discussion about Melisandre realized by chapter 4 that it’s pages from the book! Your story telling is amazing. I couldn’t get far into the second book but this has helped motivate me to start back! Do you do the whole book?? (I’ll answer myself probably just cause I’ll look after this vid lol)

Goated vedio man .

Thank you 🙏
I thought the face reveal would be of Melisandre
She's behind you :)
What is the name of the background music please? :)
Exactly! Have you found it?
nope :(@@peezyorpj
Thank u 💙
Is there gonna be a video like this for A Storm Of Swords?
Yes there will be 😊
If you don't know how to pronounce a word you can figure it out by breaking it into syllables
Didn't think I'd watch the Raid Shadow Legends commercial in 2024 😂
Book Two of A Game of Thrones? You mean A Clash of Kings? The second book of A Song of Ice and Fire?
Yeah 😂
I didn't think anything would be too dark for HBO
1:06:19 to filch something is to steal it, lync swiped pepper from his lord, he didnt flinch
2:18:33 starts
I'm laughing the he actually did bran's wolf howl! That's the stuff right there!
woah i can't wait to watch this
Which part of the video is the face reveal?
Where is Melisandre's Face Reveal?
In episode 5 i think it was Melissandre was talking to Stannis' wife. She stepped naked from the bath and had no choker on. Yet in episode 10 (i think) she took off her choker and suddenly she had a dorian grey moment. Did anyone else catch it? And was the necklace supposed to be the talisman that kept her looking young?
At least it wasn’t a Starbucks cup lol
Rubies are used for glamour.
However glamour can be seen through if the eye is sharp enough.
Which is why the faceless men prefer faces over glamour but they'll use both when necessary
It really is a eery 2nd dance of the dragons with the Baratheons. They destroy themselves instead of allying, Stannis losing his damn mind to the red priestess 🙄🫠🫠😑
The writing really was so horrible that we deserve justice for it if GM ever finished the MF WOW 🙄🤜
Was her purpose always to light the swords of the Dothraki during the dark night, because that went well.
nice clickbait title video filled with ads when all you do is basically a watered down book reading.
@videobooks where is your video on book 3 Storm of Swords ⚔️??????????????
Probably at like the end of 2024 😂
Are you an ai? Legitimate question.
This video features a face reveal but the video of the face doesnt synch with the audio being read.
There are also tell tale signs that usually point to an ai voice actor in certain mispronounced words and when the same word is said multiple times in succesion there doesn't seem to be any variation in tone or cadence. Example: King Maekar is repeated several times as 'king maker' and could just be a pronunciation thing.
I honestly can't tell anymore. These could be editing issues but there are some odd things in this video.
Yeah sorry it was my first time and I didn't do the best job 😂

His rigidity covers his weaknesses.
This channel is literally just click bait type of shit. It’s like he’s reading the books but completely missing everything lol.
What’s the music in the beginning of the video?

Thanks for letting us know 🙂
I hate to be that guy but the title and description of this video do not reflect the reality of this video, which is just a summary of the first several chapters of this book. I was expecting a character analysis of Melisandre, and the description led me to believe this would be an analysis of Stannis, perhaps how they are both portrayed in the show vs the book.
This is not simple work, sure, but this is not content I would’ve watched as a book fan had I known what it was. It feels deceptive
thank you
Sorry you feel that way, but we pour so much time into these videos that we have to go with the Thumbnail and Title that have the best click-through rate since we're proud of our product and once people click on our videos they can see what they are getting in the first 30 seconds and decide whether or not they want to click off
@@videobooks3 I don’t doubt the work you’re doing, I just think you didn’t deliver what you promised and it’s dishonest
Interesting listen, to be sure. Title's a bit misleading though, no?
Omg this i thought it was my fever and i accidentally slept through the video i clicked on but no such thing. I greatly appreciate the explanations but i came here for melisandre?
Hmmm very interesting 😊
Hearing you say Mal likely never used magic to survive the poison is probably one of the funniest thigs ive heard on videos like this.
The woman can see visions of the future, use glams to change people's appearance. Reserrect people from the dead. Give birth to shadow babies, but she likely survived poison by drinking the antidote ahead of time 😂 🤣

Amazing
Good vid but quit due to so many ad breaks.

Season 1-4 were awesome nonetheless.

And I know Melisandre has actual powers and stuff, but goddamn, she is the worst advisor possible. Poor Cressen.
where's the rest? more please?the whole book? more?

The show was trash. We need a real adaptation of ASOIAF more faithful to the books
