- Dash cam install from Dongar Technologies Simple USB Port connector.
This simply connects your Rear View Mirror (With Auto Dimming function ) Power to your Dash Cam.
Note: This install does not support constant power, the Dash Cam power on and off with ignition. So this will not work if you nee parking mode active.
The Dongar technologies web site calls for a '5 pin connector ' for Subarus, but after research I found the '10 pin Type B connector' (for Lexus/Toyota) works on my 2020 Subaru Outback.
There are a multitude of vehicle connectors available even the Ford Bronco.
Please ensure you look at your rear view mirror connector site to ensure you obtain the correct connector for your vehicle.
This is a great solution for 'Subies' , particularly because of the 'Eyesite 'technology which would make running wires in the head lining difficult and may affect the 'Eyesite' technology.

Thank you for the video. Got the 10-pin adapter as recommended. This works on our 2019 Subaru Ascent Limited with auto dimming rear view mirrors.
My 2022 outback touring xt now has the Garmin 57 installed and working perfectly. Thanks to your video, I was able to install this with that adapter in less than 15 minutes start to finish.
That’s awesome, glad I could help…
So all 10pins from them should work on my 2021 Outback? I only see type A for sale.
I'm curious if would work on the 2023/2024 out back touring XT. I say this, because those models have the LCD screen built into the rear view mirror to see out the rear window.
Keith thanks for this excellent tutorial. I purchased the 10-pin Dongar connector for my 2021 Subaru Outback Touring XT and it fit perfectly and it worked like a charm! BTW I'm using the ROVE R2-4K Pro Dash Cam for it's small footprint and excellent 4k recording capabilities. I only needed a front facing dash cam so this worked out for me quite well. BTW I ordered a short USB to USB C cable with a right angle connector on the "C" portion of the cable as the one supplied from Dongar was just way too long. BTW I never even have heard of Dongar Technologies until I stumbled upon your video. I'm so glad I did. Thanks again!!!
Very clean installation. Looking for that same setup for my 2018 outback
Works great without any problems
thanks pard very clean install
Thanks for the video. I was looking for an easy and safe way to hide the long usb wire to plug into the lighter socket and I bumped into your video. I immediately bought the Dongar connector and a short angled usb cable and connect my R2-4K Pro on by 22 Outback in less than 10 minutes. Since I didn't start the car when I installed the dash cam, I didn't have to recalibrate the compass. The compass and eyesight both work fine. I think the Dongar adaptor is rather pricy ,but it solves the hassle of routing a long cable for me, so I think money well spent. Thanks.
Happy to help, enjoy
Thanks I’ll checkout that company 😊
Thanks for the video very helpful.
Charles you are most welcome..
Thanks!
Nice. But I would want a hot connection all the time for monitoring while parked.
That’s just awesome. I wonder if they would have a cord with the pin plug that BlackVue uses.
Has anyone tried this on a Subaru Outback 2022 base model? my mirror has the compass and the dimming thing but it doesn't have any of the other buttons. It only has a big green button.
Do all of the 20-23 models have this connector?
Great video, Keith. Thank you very much
You are most welcome
Don’t know for sure but I would imagine they are the same..
Do you have any suggestions for dash cams? I like the size of looks yours, but you didn't feature any descriptions. Otherwise, nicely done.
Garmin Dash cam 56 is what I have or the Garmin dash cam mini 2. Garmin has an app for viewing or adjusting cameras. A good set up would be Garmin 56 for front and mini 2 for rear..the Garmin 57 has a few more features but more expensive..
I have a 22 outback - curious that the Toyota 10 pin works. How did you figure this out and does it work properly? Any issues with any other functions in the roof deck?
Found a random comment online to say the recommended five pin didn’t work, but if you simply take the connector out you can easily see a five pin does not work on later model Subarus. I have had no problems, it turns the camera on and off with the Ignition and it has not affected any other electrics in the car. I can say it works very well with no issues at all. If you follow the link on Amazon it does say out of Stu k but if you go ahead and order it is in stock!!!!
If you have any other questions just let me know. The install was easy snd 5 mins or 10 mins max…😎
Cool i dont see that one on the 2020 Impreza. So i wonder is its in the eyesite housing
Sorry not familiar with Impreza…
Hi Keith, Do you know whether the power to the dash cam from the mirror stops when the ignition is turned off? If not, I would be concerned that the dash cam could eventually drain the car battery. thank you for the video.
Yes, it turns off. it does not drain the battery, the Garmin powers off when the ignition is turned off. You do loose the feature if the car is bumped while you are away and because there is no power it doesn’t record that event.
@@keithrudge Thank you, Keith. That's helpful information and good news. I was worried because the HomeLink feature in the mirror does work when the ignition is off, but this adapter must use a different (switched) circuit within the mirror.
Thanks for putting this together. It appears (even though you were not able to capture on camera) that the wires tucked under the plastic cover fairly easily? Any additional tips to note there? Thanks again!
The thin wires will fold behind the plastic cover easily , there’s plenty of room, I position them so they come from the bottom of the cover .
Sorry, I should have said run cables from top of plastic cover!!!!😀
Thank you so much!
Installed mine this AM in about 5 mins on my 2020 Onyx XT! Thanks again and appreciate your help!
@@fleurdelis1982 that’s awesome, enjoy..
Hi, it’s been about a year since you posted this. Looks like a great setup and I am planning on getting the same.
Any issues with it so far? Any regrets or anything you wish you did differently?
No regrets works perfectly and was very easy to set up
What voltage is this USB adapter providing? USB is capable of delivering 5V ~ 12V DC. Thank you!
Sorry no info on that
Does this work for Crosstreks as well?
Sorry to say no experience with cross trek but if you unplug the mirror connector it will give you a good idea about the number of pins ie 5 or 10.
The cost is pretty minimal to just try it based on the pins you have.. good luck
What camera did you get
Garmin mini $129. Works great
Garmin mini $129, it works great
My 2019 Outback has the 10-pin connector, not the 5.
@rangersmith4562 I too have a '19 Outback and was wondering did you gain access to the power plug behind the mirror as Keith did here on his '20 or did you have to go in through the overhead console for the power connection? Wasn't sure due to the different generations
@@TwinsDad1988 I sold my Outback without ever doing this.
