Is Soy Bad for You?

A common question I’ve received recently is, “Is soy bad for you?” The answer is, yes, the majority of the time. It all depends on the form you’re buying it in.
Ninety-five percent of the soy out there today is bad for you. Soy was a different type of soy a long time ago versus the kind of soy we eat today. Today, processed soy contains phytoestrogens, which are estrogen-mimikers in the body. If you’re a male consuming soy, it will give you feminine characteristics or if you’re a female consuming soy, it puts you at risk for breast cancer and hormone imbalance disorders. Additionally 90% of soy today is genetically modified, which kills off the good bacteria in your gut, known as probiotics. Because of the phytoestrogens and GMOs, soy can actually be extremely harmful for you. This includes soy protein, soy milk, or any other soy product.
On the other hand, soy can be good for you if it’s in an organic, fermented soy form. This type of soy, also known as Natto, is loaded with probiotics, it’s non-GMO, and high in vitamin K2.
For more information on phytoestrogens, you can check out my article here: draxe.com/phyt...

Since the large majority (80-90%+) of GMO soy is fed to livestock, how does that affect our health? Is that the reason dairy from cows and other animals milk causes breast cancer? Or is it the hormonal estrogen naturally in other species mother's milk? What has a bigger negative impact to our health, hormonal or phyto-estrogen?

@@leviahimsa Cows/Cattle are ruminants, meaning their digestive system is highly specialized to allow the use of poorly digestible plants as food. Cattle have one stomach with four compartments, the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, with the rumen being the largest compartment. The reticulum, the smallest compartment, is known as the "honeycomb". The omasum's main function is to absorb water and nutrients from the digestible feed. The omasum is known as the "many plies". The abomasum is like the human stomach; this is why it is known as the "true stomach". Which means cows/cattle digest soy 3 times, that means it goes trice through certain stomach acid of which the last is the most acidic. Which gives us the result! Drinking cow/cattle milk is way safer than drinking mass produced soy milk. I mean most of the milk you ordinary buy is made with milk powder anyway and sold as "high quality" or similar shenanigans. But still much safer than soy!

Every food has "toxins" in it that are bad for you. It's best to not eat anything every single day. It's best to change what you eat very regularly. I try new foods all the time, but eat nothing all the time. Even the different varieties of plants we eat each have different self-protecting chemicals that can be harmful if any one is ingested regularly. Spinach for instance has lots of oxalic acid, grains and legumes have phytates. I personally get lots of bad reactions from grain and legumes, particularly in the form of inflammatory responses. I'm free of inflammation if I avoid them.

wrong wrong wrong. First off, all soy beans have phytoestrogens coming from isoflavones (which are anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory). secondly, they don't "mimic" estrogen hormone in the body. The phytoestrogen binds to the beta-receptor and our hormone binds to the alpa-receptor... they do not mimic each other, in fact it has been shown in several studies that phytoestrogens can prevent breast and prostate cancer.

Does fermentation destroy things in the soy that are bad? What about IGF1 levels? The phytoestrogens in soy increase IGF binding protein and so might reduce the IGF1 effects so if fermenting soy reduces phytoestrogens then perhaps it also reduces IGF binding protein and so increasing cancer risks. Surely it's another case of 'eat in moderation'? Don't have lots of soy or lots of fermented soy, just try to have it sometimes and make sure it's organic and mostly unprocessed

The "estrogen-like" molecules he's talking about actually don't act like estrogen in that they don't actually DO the work of estrogen. If anything, they act like estrogen in that they stick to estrogen receptors in the body thereby PREVENTING estrogen from doing the work it's supposed to, implying men don't become more like women! At the same time it doesn't mean women don't remain like women, it just means there's no INCREASED risk of estrogen-triggered breast cancer.

Some of the longest living people are in Japan and these people easily say that they eat tofu their entire life. Also, when you shop tofu, a lot of the products state "NON-GMO". As for feminine characters from eating soy, all the men in tofu eating countries should have breasts (they do not) and all the women should have GIANT breasts (NOT happening). A lot of research show that eating soy decreases breast cancer. Does soy lower testosterone?- no effect (does not increase or decrease). Men's libido in tofu eating countries are pretty high (China had to limit families to 1 child per family, until recently when their population started getting to old.) But sadly, these myths will continue withOUT any evidence whatsoever. Honestly, you are better off saying, " I don't know the answer to that."
I agree with your comment that natto is very beneficial, but it is eaten everywhere in Japan. Also agreed with comments on Vit K2 (prevents heart disease and osteoporosis) which is found in egg yolks and natto.

fermented soy products are not of concern, average asian soy comsumption is actually not that high, it has been studied multiple times, usually in China the majority is fermented and in Japan the same is true as they have known that fermentation reduced isoflavone content significantly for over 2000 years.

well it all depends on what you choose to believe. media and studies are always questionable. they use to say that coconut oil was bad for us; and now it's the new superfood. IMO, organic soy (fermented or non) and cooked cruciferous are detoxifiers and protect against and prevent cancer... i think it's sad that people are confounded about food in this generation. the very foods that will give you the biggest impact on saving health are demonized and foods that are bad for your health are touted as healthy healing food. it's the gmo soy that is bad for you. and why would a food that is fermented go from bad to good. it doesn't even make sense.

pookiroo There is a big war being waged against almost all natural proven healthy foods and herbs in general. What was once traditionally proven to be healthy in the past is today treated with great skepticism and then finally demonized, while the bad stuff is now good. To many people are ignorant today, they just follow blindly what some so called educated professional tells them to do without doing their own research about the myths and facts.

Hi Dr Axe, Thank you for all the informative videos that helps people to better look after their health.
Maybe you want to know some extra information from the locals.
I grew up in Japan and had more cooked soy than natto, and this is the case for the majority of Japanese regardless which part of Japan they live. However traditionally Natto is NOT consumed by people living west of Japan although nowadays everyone knows it's good for you so more people in the western part of Japan (eg. Kyoto, Osaka) are eating them now. The other fermented soy they eat, not a lot but everyday, is miso, also soy sauce is used for almost every cooking. One big difference when it comes to how the soys are used in food in western countries to Japan is that Japanese don't use much processed soy, like soy flour. The whole beans are soaked in water for few hours and cooked with sea vegetables and things, with a bit of sugar and soy sauce. Japanese do not drink soy milk either (though in recent years influence from the West is causing them to drink soy milk) but it's made into tofu which is 'processed' food. Eating habit is different too, so unlike western diet, tofu is not served like a main as in beef steak, but it's cut into small pieces for miso soup and other dishes. If it's a stand alone dish like 'hiya-yakko (cold tofu)" again it's a part of a la carte meal in Japanese style so it's never a soy as main and nothing else. I guess it's very much to do with what people eat with soy and how they eat, how much and how often eat, seem to be one of the keys.
